Leading Australian branded food business SunRice has partnered with rice growers to provide food relief for people in need by means of rice donations to non-profit organisation Foodbank. Hundreds of SunRice growers have been involved in the charitable project, with a total of 53 tonnes of rice donated, enough to provide over 750,000 standard servings of rice.
In the lead up to Christmas, SunRice’s gesture is a welcome addition to the food relief activities underway across the country, with 1kg medium grain rice packages to be distributed through Foodbank to charities and community groups.
SunRice Chairman Gerry Lawson said, “I am extremely proud that our company and growers have embraced this project to assist people in need, particularly as the festive season gets underway.
“SunRice is pleased to be able to make this significant donation to Foodbank. SunRice is a great Australian company and with the support of our growers we are pleased to be showcasing a spirit of generosity.”
The SunRice and Foodbank charitable project involves the whole of the rice industry supply chain with the freight costs associated with transporting the 53 tonnes of rice from Leeton to Melbourne being generously donated by local company Deniliquin Freighters.
CEO of Foodbank John Webster offered thanks to SunRice, its growers and Deniliquin Freighters who have chosen to contribute to the project. He commented, “Foodbank is very pleased to be working with SunRice. We are very fortunate to have the support of many Australian companies, from major retailers to manufacturers and agricultural producers.
“The generosity of companies like SunRice and Australian food producers like our rice growers makes a huge difference to the millions of people in Australia who are facing hunger and poverty.
Rice is a staple food for households across Australia, and we are pleased that with your support we will be able to provide a high quality, home-grown product to people in need,” said Mr Webster.
Russell Tait, Managing Director of Deniliquin Freighters also commented, “The opportunity to be a part of such a meaningful project was an easy decision. It’s been a privilege to be involved with SunRice and growers to contribute to this charity and we hope this rice helps to ease some of the burden people in need face.”
