In a landmark that is testament to the unsung generosity of Australia’s food producers and retailers, last month national food relief charity Foodbank marked the distribution of 200 million meals in 10 years to Australians in crisis.

Equivalent to feeding Australia’s population ten times over, these meals have made a significant contribution to the work of charities across the country which are supporting increasing numbers of people, in particular low income families.

Jason Hincks, CEO of Foodbank Australia says, “While we are incredibly proud of this milestone and the impact this food is having on everyday Australians in crisis, it also serves to illustrate the rising need in our country. We are humbled and inspired by the unwavering commitment of the food industry and the tireless work of the welfare agencies. Their contribution has never been more crucial.”

Foodbank has grown steadily since it was first established in NSW in 1992. Last year it provided food for 39 million meals – a 23% increase on the prior year.

“The Australian food and grocery industry is the quiet hero when it comes to food relief in this country providing over $180 million worth of supplies annually to Foodbank. Our donors are constantly looking for new ways to help us in spite of the difficult economic circumstances that are impacting their businesses,” Hincks explained. “With their help during these tough times we’ve seen a four fold increase in the volume of food distributed in the last decade, while at the same time achieving an improvement in the variety of that food such that 78% of what we distribute is now key staple food.”

In addition to providing surplus food and groceries on an ad hoc basis, an increasing number of Australia’s leading brands are also manufacturing for Foodbank. This is how it’s able to ensure the consistent supply of essentials such as breakfast items, pasta meals and canned goods. In addition Foodbank is now being assisted by farmers and others in the primary produce sector who regularly provide fruit and vegetables, milk, grain, rice, meat and eggs.

One of these partners is Mondelēz International, which has supported Foodbank across a number of programs. Mondelēz has provided more than 200,000 jars of Vegemite in the last 2 years and for the past three years has donated more than one million Cadbury chocolate eggs each year to share the joy of Easter with struggling Australians.

Darren O’Brien, Managing Director Foods, Mondelēz International says, “As a business, we really value the opportunity to work with partners such as Foodbank to ensure that Australians who are doing it tough get a little extra help, with food staples, or with treats to celebrate special times of the year,”

“We’re committed to building, nurturing and investing in the communities we live and work in, and are really pleased to be doing so in partnership with Foodbank”.
