Flight Centre Foundation and Foodbank set World’s Biggest Hamper Pack Challenge record!
On Tuesday 17 October 2017, a world record was set when Flight Centre volunteers gathered in capital cities around Australia to pack 10,000 food hampers for Foodbank.
More than a hundred Flight Centre Travel Group staff from stores and offices around Australia volunteered to pack the food hampers which were made possible by a company-wide appeal amongst staff and travel customers.
The volunteers worked in shifts at convention centres and Foodbank distribution centres in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth and Darwin, with the Adelaide team taking out the award for most fun on the day!
“At Flight Centre we love a challenge as much as we love contributing to our community – The World’s Biggest Hamper Pack enabled us to combine the two at the same time as having fun,” said Flight Centre Foundation’s general manager, Anita Russell.
Brianna Casey, CEO of Foodbank Australia, responded saying the mass hamper pack would not have been possible without the dedication and energy of the Flight Centre Travel Group staff and everyone at the Flight Centre Foundation. “It was truly inspirational to see so many people united across the country for a cause that usually goes largely unnoticed,” said Casey.
Flight Centre Foundation and Foodbank launched the World’s Biggest Hamper Pack Challenge campaign on 1 August 2017, aiming to set the world record for the most food relief hampers packed in one day for a foodbank.
Flight Centre Travel Group customers joined the challenge by donating the value of a hamper when making their travel bookings at Flight Centre, Cruiseabout, Escape Travel, Travel Associates, Student Flights or My Adventure Travel stores around the country. A number of corporate sponsors also donated pallets of hampers!
As an added bonus, all donors went into the draw to win $7,000 worth of flights thanks to Virgin Australia.
We know that in the last year alone, 3.6 million Australians experienced the anguish and despair of not knowing where their next meal was coming from for themselves or their families. It’s a shocking statistic for the ‘lucky country’,” comment Casey. “We want to thank every single individual and company that supported this campaign, all in the name of feeding hungry Australians.”
Virgin Australia and Intrepid Travel supported the campaign with prizes for staff and donors. Cutting Edge, ikon and bizwear contributed to the promotion of the campaign. Adelaide Convention Centre, Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and Sydney Showground generously donated the spaces for the hamper packs in their respective cities.
