Foodbank Australia has welcomed the Prime Minister, Scott Morrison’s announcement this morning that Foodbank Australia’s funding is to be reinstated to its former level.

The Prime Minister and Social Services Minister have confirmed the funding critical to Foodbank’s Key Staples Program will remain at $750,000 per year over 4.5 years.

This funding will allow the Foodbank Key Staples Program to continue to deliver more than $8m worth of essential foods, such as rice, pasta, breakfast cereal and canned fruit and vegetables, to vulnerable Australians via its network of 2,600 charities.

Responding to this positive step forward, Foodbank Australia CEO Brianna Casey said: “We are pleased the Federal Government has made the right decision for families in need.”

“However, with demand for food relief outstripping supply, we remain convinced that a bi-partisan, whole of government food security strategy is the only way to deliver long-term, meaningful solutions to a national problem that is now reaching crisis proportions in Australia,” she said. “In our pre-budget submission, we outlined a number of initiatives that could make an immediate difference to our ability to meet the need in the community. We trust that the government will give urgent attention to these proposals in the interests of tackling this problem head-on.”

The Foodbank Hunger Report 2018 confirmed that 4 million Australians were affected by food insecurity in the last 12 months, with regional and remote Australia 33% more likely to be affected than their city cousins. Foodbank’s Rumbling Tummies report, released earlier this year, also confirmed that 1 in 5 Australian children has experienced food insecurity in the last year. Both reports confirmed that the situation is getting worse year on year.

“We would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming support we received over the past 24 hours. We are very humbled that the work which means so much to us, also resonates with the broader community, and we are just so thrilled that our Foodbank family has grown.”
