Reducing food waste

Foodbank’s food and grocery rescue operations play a key role in addressing Australia’s $20 billion food waste problem, redirecting or re-purposing 37 million kilograms of food and groceries that would otherwise end up in  landfill, saving more than 81 million kilograms of CO2 emissions every year.

Foodbank’s proven ability to rescue and redirect massive volumes of food that would otherwise be sent to landfill is  crucial to Australia’s ability to deliver on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and to the objectives of the National Food Waste Strategy. The scale of our operations make Foodbank critical to  the success of the ‘Reuse’ level of the  food waste hierarchy.

Not only are we working with farmers, the country’s largest food and grocery manufacturers and all major food and grocery retailers to ensure they are prioritising food rescue opportunities over landfill, but we are also working with the research community to ensure a strategic and collaborative approach can be taken in every step of the hierarchy.  Foodbank Australia is proud to be a core participant of the Fight Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre, which will see a 10-year focus on increasing industry profitability, tackling food insecurity and enhancing Australia’s reputation as a sustainable and trusted producer of premium foods.
