QUEENSLAND’S BIGGEST SPORTING CODES JOIN FORCES TO SUPPORT FOODBANK
Foodbank Queensland Sporting Partners, Queensland Cricket and the NRMA Brisbane Broncos, along with Foodbank Queensland Ambassador Petero Civoniceva and Netball Queensland have thrown their support behind the inaugural Foodbank Queensland School Food Drive Awards.
Every year primary and secondary schools all across Queensland organise a food drive to support Foodbank the local community. The Foodbank Queensland School Food Drive Awards aims to reward and recognise all the hard work that the schools put into their food drive to help fight hunger across the state.
“Food Drives are important way for the public, students and schools to support Foodbank Queensland with a variety of canned produce that is easily transported by our charity partners. We’ve seen how much passion and effort the students put into their school’s food drive, along with some friendly inter-class rivalry! It’s only appropriate that these efforts are rewarded each year.” says Michael Rose, Foodbank Queensland, Chief Executive Officer.
Food Drives provide an opportunity for students to learn about hunger in Queensland and a chance to do their bit to help. All students are able to participate, giving as little or much as they can towards a broader community, whilst helping Foodbank provide essential pantry items to our frontline charity partners.
“We’ve been running our food drive for the past 12 years. It’s a chance to bring the whole school together and creating a sense of social responsibility within the school and with the wider, external community. It’s a simple, cost-friendly way to show our students how easy it is for them to have an impact and help those in need. Each year the inter-class rivalry helps fuel even bigger donations, which is fantastic.” said Rebecca Gardner, Cavendish Road State High School.
Foodbank Queensland will be introducing four perpetual awards, ‘Above and Beyond’ presented by Queensland Cricket, ‘A Big Impact’ presented by the Brisbane Broncos, ‘Leads by Example’ presented by Petero Civoniceva and ‘Rookie of the Year’ presented by Netball Queensland.
“Queensland Cricket is excited to be supporting the Foodbank Queensland School Drive Awards. Having run our own food drives at Queensland Cricket, we know how they can bring a community together and help those in need. It is fantastic to see schools involved in an initiative like this and students who are passionate about helping others. Good Luck to all schools involved.”, says, Terry Svenson – Interim CEO of Queensland Cricket.
Brisbane Broncos Community Services Coordinator, Brigid Donelly, added “Seeing these students tackle hunger is incredibly inspiring and we’re delighted to support the Foodbank Queensland School Food Drive Awards and the big impact they have on the students, community and those Queenslanders in need.”
Every donation, no matter how big or small, makes a difference to Queenslanders in need. However, schools such as Cavendish Road who ‘Lead By Example’ lead the way with the largest school food drive in Queensland. Foodbank Queensland Ambassador, Petero Civoniceva, lends his name to the award as “I’ve seen first-hand how much the kids love their food drive, especially when the cans are piled high! Food Drives are a simple, fun way to convey a complex message to kids about food insecurity and hunger in Australia.”
The Awards also recognise new schools who have just started on their food drive journey with the Rookie of the Year award. “It’s great that Foodbank Queensland is recognising the student’s efforts to fight hunger across the state. Helping the community is part of what makes Queenslanders who they are. And it is who we are at Netball Queensland.’ Said Netball Queensland CEO Catherine Clark.
The Foodbank Queensland School Food Drive Awards are open to all schools who are organising a food drive with Foodbank Queensland. The winners of each award will be presented with a perpetual trophy and receive a visit for a player or team associated with each award.
