Foodbank is Australia’s largest food relief organisation and unfortunately, right now the demand for food relief is greater than ever before. The Foodbank Hunger Report has revealed more than one in five Australians (21%) have been in a situation where they have run out of food and have been unable to eat.

As the lead up to Christmas is drawing near, the need for food relief always increases and so does need for volunteers.

So, Foodbank is calling for new volunteers to help out at our Distribution Centre in Glendenning. Volunteer Coordinator, Luke Chesworth says while regular volunteer numbers have increased by 20% over the past year, there’s a great need for more helping hands to meet the urgent demand.

Luke says, “Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, keep fit and learn new skills. We need Foodbank drivers and more warehouse volunteers. Our volunteers work from 8am to 2pm, across Monday to Friday, and help us to pack orders and process donations. Right now we need regular volunteers to help on Mondays and/or Tuesdays as these are our busiest days.”

To volunteer in our Glendenning warehouse you do not need any experience, just enclosed shoes, comfortable clothes, and a jumper or jacket (because we do have a cool room). All training is provided and you are teamed up with an experienced volunteer to help you find your way around. Volunteers are encouraged from all ages, from fifteen to as fit as you feel.

Volunteering also provides a successful avenue for volunteers who are long-term unemployed to find work.

“Many of our long-term volunteers have proven their reliability and found work outside Foodbank, which means there is now an important space to fill. Many have shared with us how their valuable contribution has both increased their skill set and lifted their self-esteem,” said Luke.
