Foodbank Food Hub Katherine – Client Information

Where do I need to go?

We are located at 15 Emungalan Road, Emungalan NT 0850 (click for google directions)

There is plenty of parking at the Food Hub.

When can I visit?

Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 9.00am – 2.00pm

We’re closed weekends and public holidays.

What should I bring?

  • The text message we sent you and some ID.
  • Shopping bags if you can.

How it works

When you arrive go to the reception desk and have your text message, voucher or visit card and ID ready.

Our Foodbank Food Hubs are like supermarkets with aisles of food, fridges and freezers. While you may not see the same variety as a supermarket we aim to always have staple items like pasta, rice, meat, tinned meals and FREE fruit, vegetables and bread.

There may be limits on some items so we can help as many people as possible. Many items will be priced with a price sticker or a shelf price to help you add up as you go.

Everybody who shops at Foodbank must have an ‘agency pays’ voucher or a ‘customer pays’ referral.

  • An ‘ER Agency pays’ voucher means that the referring charity will pay for your shopping and you must stick to the dollar amount on your voucher. If you would like more food than what your agency pays voucher allows, you will need to use a ‘customer pays’ referral and pay for the extra food with an Eftpos card. We can not accept cash under any circumstances.
  • If you have a ‘customer pays’ referral (where the individual shopping pays for their own items) you may choose as little, or as much food as you’d like so long as you can pay for it via Eftpos. You must still stick to the product limits shown. Once you use your customer pays referral for the first time, we will write you out a ‘visit card’ to bring each time you come in. You can use this card 10 times. It will have the date of each visit so you can track how many visits you have left.

You may only shop at Foodbank  once per week regardless of how many or which type of vouchers you have.

Please remember

  • You must supervise your children at all times and children may only sit in the child seat of a trolley.
  • Please follow the directions of volunteers and staff.
  • Please respect our volunteers and staff who are here to provide a safe environment for everyone.

About the Artist & Artwork

“This painting is about the way women hunt Wardapi – that sand goanna. He digs holes in the dunes, makes his nest deep inside. Many of the holes all join up. Women hunt Wardapi in the dunes by digging out the holes. Sometimes cover one, and Wardapi runs out other one. Need to hunt him together. Find all the holes. Dig them at the same time. Someone going to get him that way.” – Grace Spencer – Artist

The Wardapi Jukurrpa [Varanus Gouldii Goanna] belongs to the Spencer Sisters. It comes from Yarripilangku [aka Yinyiripalangu], south-west of Yuendumu. A group of Warlpiri Karnta [women] are sittng down in a circle when a Japangardi Wati [man] from Puturlu [Mt Theo], called Wamaru came upon them. He wants to take one of them, named Yurlkurinyi, of Nungarrayi skin, which is the wrong skin for him.

He takes the Nungarrayi woman up a hill, where they make love. In response, the earth on top of the hill turns to Ngunjungunju [white ochre], and yellow and red ochre. The yellow is for Karnta and the red for Wa. The ochre is used by Warlpiri people for love magic and ceremonial decoration. The Wati turns all the Karnta and himself into Wardapi, aka Varanus Gouldii goannas. This Jukurrpa belongs to the Napaljarri/Japaljarri and Nungarrayi /Jungarrayi subsections, and the Japanangka/Napanangka, Japangardi/Napangardi subsections of Puturlu. The women are often represented by ‘U’ shapes. Concentric circles may illustrate Wardapi holes, or their droppings left behind them, and Wardapi tracks are usually represented by ‘W’ shapes and wavy lines.
