THANK YOU FOR HELPING FOODBANK PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE OF VULNERABLE SOUTH AUSTRALIANS AND NORTHERN TERRITORIANS!

Country & Regional Outreach

Those living in country and regional areas are 33% more likely to require food relief than those living in metropolitan areas.

South Australia and Northern Territorys extensive geographic area poses some logistical and operational challenges to reach those in rural and outback communities who need food relief services. Our regional branches in Mount Gambier, Berri, Whyalla, Ceduna, Alice Springs and Darwin support their respective regions. We also supply the stock for a regional Food Hub in Port Pirie.

Foodbank SA Pop Up

A Pop Up is a one-off event held in an area or region that has been identified has having a high rate of food insecure South Australians. We work with local agencies to identify these locations to provide food relief to those in greatest need in our state.

Foodbank seek sponsors willing to contribute to the Pop Up. Our trucks are loaded full of food for distribution free of charge to that community area. Our aim is to get more food out to the people who need it the most. We work together with welfare agency partners in the area and invite them to send their clients along. Foodbank provides free fresh produce and free pantry foods, as well as a free sausage sizzle.

In 2018, The Murray Bridge community had a rough year, with a fire causing significant damage to the Thomas Foods International abattoir, a major local employer. Many locals lost their jobs and the effect flowed to other, allied industries in the region.

Foodbank SA teamed up with the Port Adelaide Football Club (PAFC) and organised two trucks of food to be delivered to the Murray Bridge Racing Club.

More than 360 individuals attended the Murray Bridge Pop Up, representing more than 900 vulnerable South Australians in need (with nearly half of the 900 being children).

A total of 7,400 kg of fresh fruit and vegetables and other assorted groceries were distributed in under two hours.  With more than 50 volunteers helping to make the day a success, 25 of these volunteers were from Port!

It was great to receive feedback from those who attended the pop up and hear what it meant to them:

“We’ll be able to eat for the next few days.  I won’t be anxious about how I’m going to feed myself and my kids.  It gives me respite.  It is a relief”
“I have no money till Tuesday.  It has made a huge difference to me and my family”
“As a single mum of two boys, who has recently got out of a DV relationship this helps us so much xx”

Foodbank
 Superhero Program

Do you want to be a Foodbank superhero?

You can join the Foodbank family and learn how to help others in need.

Foodbank SA & NT has identified through our School Programs an increased demand for Foodbank specific educational and interactive activities for children. The Superhero Program has been developed as a way for children and their families to connect with Foodbank. Young people aged 4 to 12 years will learn about food insecurity, how they can make a difference in the lives of others and start to develop a ‘pay it forward’ mentality at a young age. The Program will also educate children about Foodbank’s key messages including reducing food waste.

For children whose families require the support of Foodbank it will become a ‘safe program’ as we become one big family that supports each other. By educating children, we hope to reduce the stigma around food insecurity. It’s never too early to learn how to help others and understand what it means to become a real hero.

Simply register to become a Foodbank Superhero.

4 things you will learn to be a true Foodbank SA and Central Australia Superhero:

1. Helping others

2. Being Humble

3. Getting Educated

4. Reducing Waste

A note for parents:

As parents/guardians we want our children to grow up to be well rounded and contributing members of our society. This program aims to involve children in giving back to their local community, with the support of you their parents/guardians. We hope this will help to instil thankfulness in children and will shape a better future for not only our community but the state.

MOBILE FOOD HUB

Foodbank SA is taking food to where it is needed the most. In 2019, Foodbank SA launched its first Mobile Food Hub – designed to get food to families living in the highest areas of demand.

Together with our welfare agency partners, the Mobile Food Hub works on a referral system to ensure those accessing the service are in genuine need of food relief and the food relief efforts are going to where it is needed the most in South Australia.

The Mobile Food Hub has also been designed to assist families during natural disasters and support drought effected regions in the future. Foodbank SA supporter, ElectraNet is helping to ‘power’ the Mobile food hub and keep it on the road for the next four years, after the State Government provided the initial start-up grant.

The Mobile Food Hub travels to areas identified as being areas of great need with limited service or access to food relief.

If you would like to learn more about the Foodbank Mobile Food Hub or would like to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call 8351 1136 or email reception@foodbanksa.org.au.

HAMPER PROGRAM

Foodbank SA & NT provides Everyday Hampers, prepared by our volunteers for those in need and distributed by our welfare agency partners. The hampers comprise everyday staples and essential ingredients for meal preparation.

As well, each year we provide Christmas Hampers, prepared for us by our corporate volunteers in the Edwardstown warehouse, beginning mid-October. Corporate groups use this opportunity as a team building activity, whilst providing much needed support to Foodbank.  We were pleased to again see a waiting list of organisations wanting to participate in the Christmas Hamper packing program.

Last year, around 10,000 Christmas Hampers were packed and distributed to metro and country regions, via welfare agencies, to families who struggle to make ends meet at Christmas. For some families this may be the only present they get at Christmas.

Fruit & Veg For All

Providing Free Fruit & Veg to those in need.

default card image

Through an innovative partnership with the South Australian Produce Market established in August 2012, we were able to secure a 1,000m2 warehouse which became the symbol of our commitment to offer a healthy choice to our welfare partners.

At our Foodbank’s Fruit & Veg Centre we source donations from fresh produce wholesalers to distribute via our warehouses and foodhubs. We go even further by nurturing relationships with growers and packing sheds in the Riverland, Adelaide Hills and Virginia regions to source produce straight from the orchard/farm to our Fruit & Veg Centre. At Foodbank, fresh produce is distributed at no charge.

When we started this program our annual fresh fruit and vegetable collection was totaled approximately 100,000 kilograms and now almost 5 years on, we receive over one million kilograms of donated fresh fruit and vegetables annually.

All produce we receive is sorted and value-added, then provided to welfare agencies, community kitchens and schools at no charge to assist families and children.

Collaborative Supply Program

Turning our ‘surprise chain’ into a supply chain

We have a Foodbank in every state and territory throughout Australia, feeding over a million people every month.

So we can’t rely on donations alone.

With the increasing demand for food relief and a focus on reducing waste, our world leading Collaborative Supply Program was born. We collaborate with manufacturers and their component suppliers to produce a reliable supply of everyday foods.

The staple foods we currently produce via a collaborative supply program include:

Pasta, bread, Eggs, pasta sauce, Meat, breakfast cereal, canned tomatoes, coffee, Fresh Milk,Fruit and vegetables, cereal, recipe bases like butter chicken.

How the Collaborative Supply Program works

Collaborative Supply Program HR

We agree on a product and a sustainable production volume with our partners using their existing manufacturing facility and production capacity.

We then work along the supply chain with farmers, ingredient, packaging suppliers and transport companies to seek their support. Their support can be donations of their component, such as an ingredient, packing or transport. Another option is providing financial assistance to cover the cost of their part.

For the components that cannot be fully donated, we use funds from industry and government to fill the funding gap.

Nutrition at Foodbank

At Foodbank, we believe everyone should have access to good quality, nutritious, culturally and life-stage appropriate food. As more people seek food relief from charities, providing ready access to these foods to help reduce the negative health impacts of food insecurity, is an important part of our services.

We work with the entire food and grocery industry, from growers and farmers to manufacturers and retailers, to source a range of food that meets the needs of the everyday people we help.

Foodbank also offers practical solutions to cooking healthy meals on a budget. A team of dietitians at Foodbank WA, have developed programs that teach essential life skills such as how to read food labels, plan and prepare meals and shop on a budget.

All the recipes meet the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating recommendations, can be made in under 30 minutes and are budget-friendly.
