Cost of living forcing Aussies to choose between feeding themselves or their pets, says Petstock Foundation

August 2025

The Petstock Foundation has partnered with Foodbank Australia to help provide relief to struggling families across the country as cost-of-living pressures continue to bite. Throughout August, the Foundation and Foodbank are launching the Big Hearts Project, aiming to raise $100,000 across Australia and New Zealand to supply pet food to households in need.

Recent research1 shows that food insecurity is now affecting entire Aussie households, including beloved pets, with 24% of people in food-insecure households skipping meals so their pets can eat.

Naomi Mancktelow from the Petstock Foundation said,

“Our Big Hearts Project aims to empower Australians who are struggling to feed their pets.

“We know people experiencing hardship often feel isolated. For many people, a pet is their only constant. The Foundation is committed to leading change, strengthening the bond between pets and people, and creating lasting impact in local communities.

“This August donate $2 to the Petstock Foundation to provide a meal to a pet in need. Either in store or online, this small donation will make a big difference. You are not just filling a bowl, you are supporting the emotional wellbeing for families under pressure, keeping pets in loving homes where they belong and empowering a better future for pets and people. Let us stand together for the pets that inspire us — and the families who love them,” Naomi said.

Foodbank Australia revealed that the growing scale of the national crisis and the extraordinary lengths families are going to care for their pets, even when facing food insecurity themselves:

  • 42% of Australian pet owners are buying cheaper food for themselves
  • 34% are reducing their own food intake
  • Only 9% of food insecure pet owners know that pet food is available through food relief services

Brianna Casey AM, CEO of Foodbank Australia, said,

“We know many families experiencing food insecurity face tough decisions between heating and eating. We have previously heard that parents skip meals to ensure their children can eat, and we now know this sacrifice extends to the family pet, who are much-loved family members.

“This incredible support from the Petstock Foundation and its loyal customers allows us to support these households who are doing it tough. Thank you to everyone who is supporting this campaign, your donation means we can alleviate the many tough decisions and sacrifices that too many households make every day around the country,” Brianna said.

With a growing number of households needing food relief the Big Hearts Project will help distribute essential pet food across the country through Foodbank’s national charity network.
