South West produce too good to waste

300,000 kilos of valuable South West produce has been collected by Foodbank Bunbury over the past 8 months, thanks to the support of the ATCO Communities Fund.


Their generous grant covered fuel expenses for Bunbury’s trucks to rescue fresh fruit and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste. 

Foodbank WA’s mission is to end hunger by 2030. By global figures we already produce more than enough food for everyone. According to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation, around 14 percent of food produced globally is lost between harvest and retail. 

The South West is one of the richest food growing regions in Australia. Food rescue in the area is vital to Foodbank WA, with much of the fresh produce collected through our Bunbury branch being distributed through Foodbank WA branches all over the state. 87% of the product Foodbank Bunbury collects is fresh fruit and veg. 

Albany foodbank customer Dianna Coyne said she relies on the fresh produce at Foodbank WA to keep her healthy while undergoing cancer treatment.  

They’ve got lovely food there. There are certain foods that I can’t eat because of my sickness and it’s gotta be fresh, but I’ve found that the fruit and vegetables are really nice every time I go there.
