School Breakfast Clubs Program

The most marvellous way to start the day, is giving our kids a brighter future.

Every morning, Foodbank Victoria is helping turn sleepy yawns into bright smiles and loads of energy to learn by delivering a free nutritious breakfast to hungry students, ensuring those who can’t access enough food outside school will never miss out on what they need.

Since teaming up with the Victorian Government in 2016, our School Breakfast Clubs Program has grown from 500 primary schools to over 1,200 schools across the state – including primary, secondary, P–12 and specialist schools. That’s 55 million meals served to date with care, kindness, and a whole lot of love.

Every school puts their own spin on School Brekky Club, but one thing they all have in common is a passionate commitment to creating a friendly, fun environment with plenty of delicious, healthy options where everyone feels welcome.

And we’re not stopping there! Thanks to new funding, we’re expanding even further – with every Victorian government school invited to join in by mid-2026.

Here’s what’s on the menu:

🥣 Healthy breakfasts delivered to schools to help students start their day with energy and focus.

🥪 Nutritious lunches, snacks and Home Food Packs for students who need a little extra support.

🍳 Family cooking classes at over 100 disadvantaged schools – because good food brings people together.

But Breakfast Club isn’t just about what’s on the plate. It’s about what happens around it.

🍎 Healthy choices made easy: Nutritious options are always within reach, helping everyone in the school community make better food decisions. (The menu is assessed by the Healthy Eating Advisory Service FoodChecker to make sure items comply with the Department’s Canteens, Healthy Eating and Other Food Services policy)

🧑‍🍳 Learning by doing: Kids get hands-on with cooking, nutrition, and food literacy—skills they’ll carry for life.

🤝 Together is better: Breakfast becomes a shared experience, where friendships grow and smiles are served daily.

🌱 Role models in action: Staff and volunteers lead by example, showing what healthy eating looks like in real life.

🎨 Student-powered: From designing menus to running the club, students help shape the experience.

🏡 Families welcome: Parents and carers join in too, cooking and learning alongside their children.

Child Safe Commitment

Foodbank Victoria acknowledges that each member of its team, and of the community broadly, have a responsibility to understand the important role they play in developing and maintaining a child-safe culture and an environment that ensures the wellbeing and safety of children and young people. Foodbank Victoria is committed to providing the resources and support to its team members and the community so that child safety underpins its operations on all levels.

As an organisation which provides services for children in Victoria, including the School Breakfast Clubs Program, Foodbank Victoria is fully committed to implementing and complying with all aspects of each of the Victorian Child Safe Standards, and therefore National Principles for Child Safe Organisations, within our operations.

WHO WE HELP

We believe everyone should have access to good quality food no matter their situation.

We work with 2,929 charities around the country to get food and groceries to those who could use a hand every year. We are also the largest supporter of School Breakfast Programs in Australia, regularly supplying to 3,220 schools nationally.

Find out how Foodbank works with the community to help those in need.

Feeding 69,000 Victorians every single day.

Hello, we’re Foodbank Victoria.

Whether it’s everyday emergencies or in times of crisis, we’ve been providing vital food relief to vulnerable Victorians for over 95 years.

Through our network of over 1,200 schools and nearly 500 charities right across Victoria, we’ve distributed over 25 million meals in the last 12 months alone. Right now, we’re feeding 69,000 people every single day.

You could say we’re the fridge and pantry for some of Victoria’s most trusted charities – including the Salvation Army and Vinnies – working together to support those who need us most.

We’re also out on the road every week, so we can reach people in need directly with our fresh food markets and mobile supermarket buses. These programs mean families can come and collect enough fresh produce for an entire week – for free – allowing us to reach disadvantaged communities in each and every corner of Victoria. Our Community Food Centres in Ballarat and Morwell are also essential to making this possible, providing the critical missing link between Foodbank’s supply of healthy food, the work of our local charity partners, and those needing food relief throughout regional Victoria.

We believe that all Victorians should have regular access to healthy, culturally appropriate food. That’s why we work hand-in-hand with partners right across the food and grocery sector – from farmers and growers, right through to retailers – to source, rescue and purchase essential food and grocery items to help nourish our communities.

While supporting schools and charities across our network is at the heart of what we do, we’re also here when disaster strikes, as the state’s dedicated emergency food relief organisation. In times of crisis – whether it’s a bushfire, flood or pandemic – you can count on us to be here to help Victoria.

And we couldn’t do any of this without the support of our community. Every dollar donated is two meals created.

All we need is 3 minutes to show you all the work that goes on behind the scenes to help feed 69,000 Victorians every single day. Watch this video to see for yourself.

How do we get food out to 69,000 people every single day?

We're here to get good food to good people.

Here at Foodbank Victoria, our values aren’t just words on a wall – they’re the heartbeat of everything we do. They teach us how to lift each other up, how to create a workplace that feels like home, and most importantly – how to show up for our communities when they need us most.

Sustainable development goals

Foodbank plays a vital role in helping Australia deliver on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — a global blueprint to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all.

Our work directly supports five of the 17 goals:

We support people experiencing hardship by providing essential food relief. We work with charities and schools across Australia to help build stronger, more resilient communities. By reducing the pressure of food insecurity, we help lessen the impact of poverty and give people the support they need to get back on their feet.

Foodbank is Australia’s largest hunger relief organisation. Our mission is for a hunger-free Australia. We work with the entire Australian food and grocery industry to source and distribute food to ensure everyone has access to good food. Achieving zero hunger is key to improving health, education and equality.

Food insecurity doesn’t discriminate and impacts many people in our communities. Our work helps bridge the gap by supporting those doing it tough have access to good, culturally appropriate food.

Australia produces enough food for the population three times over. We rescue and divert perfectly edible food and groceries from farms and growers to manufacturers and retailers to stop it from going to landfill. We are advocating the Federal Government to apply a National Food Donation Incentive.

Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. We work with growers, producers, charities, schools, governments and corporate partners to share resources and deliver real impact.

HUNGER IN AUSTRALIA

The Foodbank Hunger Report 2024 revealed that 3.4 million households in Australia have run out of food in the last year.

Here at Foodbank, we provide essential food and grocery relief to over one million Australians experiencing food insecurity every month. We collaborate with the entire Australian food and grocery sector, including farmers, wholesalers, manufacturers, and retailers, who donate and redirect surplus products to us. Our mission is to end hunger in Australia.
