Feeding change: our impact at Foodbank WA

You probably know that Foodbank WA supports the community in practical ways by improving access to good food.
But you might not be aware of some of the broader ways that we’re feeding change. These are some of our initiatives and purposes designed to address the heart of the hunger problem in WA and Australia.
Feeding people
Providing food to those struggling is our core reason for being, with the equivalent of 9.2 million meals going out last year across WA. We distribute food via over 350 frontline charity partners, our branches, our Mobile Foodbanks, and over 550 schools to support as many people as we possibly can with high-quality, low-cost food.
We’re here for people in the everyday, as well as for drought relief, bushfire recovery and floods.
Encouraging healthy eating for life
Nutrition education equips people with the skills to cook healthy, tasty food on a budget. We educate and raise awareness of healthy eating through our various programs, including nom! and Superhero Foods® HQ.
In FY2024, we delivered nutrition education to 6,577 attendees including children, adults, parents and people with disability.

Advocating for those doing it tough
Advocacy is also an essential part of what we do, and we give a voice to food insecure Western Australians. Hunger often happens behind closed doors, and our advocacy work and when you tell people about what we do, you are being an ambassador and part of our advocacy program.
Researching food insecurity
It’s really vital to understand the issue of food insecurity in WA and Australia. Who is skipping meals or struggling to afford groceries – and how can we best support them? Our regular research and Hunger Reports help us meet community needs and drive change in intentional ways. This important research also guides our advocacy work.
Providing support sustainably
We’re here for the long term and we’re here for the people in need. That’s why we aim to be efficient, effective, and sustainable in all that we do – from using eco-friendly containers in our Community Kitchen, to minimising waste and make sure every bit of food we receive is put to good use rather than contributing to landfill.
Our activities at Foodbank align with five of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on addressing poverty, hunger and inequality in a responsible way.

Sustainable development goals
Foodbank plays a vital role in helping Australia deliver on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — a global blueprint to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all.
Our work directly supports five of the 17 goals:

We support people experiencing hardship by providing essential food relief. We work with charities and schools across Australia to help build stronger, more resilient communities. By reducing the pressure of food insecurity, we help lessen the impact of poverty and give people the support they need to get back on their feet.

Foodbank is Australia’s largest hunger relief organisation. Our mission is for a hunger-free Australia. We work with the entire Australian food and grocery industry to source and distribute food to ensure everyone has access to good food. Achieving zero hunger is key to improving health, education and equality.

Food insecurity doesn’t discriminate and impacts many people in our communities. Our work helps bridge the gap by supporting those doing it tough, have access to good, culturally appropriate food.

Australian produces enough food for the population three times over. We rescue and divert from landfill, perfectly edible food and groceries from farms and growers to manufacturers and retailers. We are advocating the Federal Government to apply a National Food Donation Incentive.

Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. We work with growers, producers, charities, schools, governments and corporate partners to share resources and deliver real impact.
