2026 Volunteer Awards
Effort and Impact
Term 2 saw the nominations of the 2026 School Breakfast Program Volunteer Awards.
We have read your nominations and the verdict is in! We seriously love our school breakfast volunteers.
We received a record 198 nominations from 154 schools.
Nominations rolled in from Augusta in southern Western Australia all the way up to Kununurra in the north. Schools need and cherish their volunteers, and breakfast clubs simply could not run without them!
The positive impact of Breakfast Club
The nominations illustrated the positive benefits experienced by all students who attend breakfast club, not only those who are hungry. Wellbeing and readiness to learn were the primary elements reported, with the direct impact felt most clearly during the first teaching block of the day. It was reported that students showed improved concentration, behaviour and attendance. Students coming from breakfast club were reportedly calmer and exhibited more enthusiasm and receptiveness.
Volunteers and values
Thanks to the dedication and reliability of volunteers, breakfast clubs are running multiple days a week, with many running across 5 days. On days when formal breakfast clubs do not run, schools reported feeding hungry students when they needed it most. The consistent care and compassion that volunteers displayed contributed to the creation of inclusive and supportive environments. Fostering a sense of welcoming and safety also helped students attend breakfast. Students knew they were going to be greeted with warmth, kindness and familiarity. Students came for breakfast and stayed for the fellowship.
Beyond hunger
What became really clear in the nominations we received was that the benefits and purpose of breakfast clubs extend beyond food. Breakfast clubs are safe environments where students foster meaningful relationships with their peers and education staff. Staff become trusted adults for students to confide in and spend valuable time with peers. Starting the day with positive social interaction has been reported by staff as equally beneficial to students as the food itself. Food is the catalyst for this positive connection, and we thank the volunteers for making it possible.
