Nutrition Education for
healthier communities
As local governments continue
to strengthen their focus on public health and community wellbeing, Foodbank WA’s nom! Nutrition Education programs offer a practical, engaging and evidence-informed way to help achieve these goals.
In fact, nom! has already been recognised by several local governments through the Fair Food Network discussions as an effective initiative for supporting healthier, more connected communities.
Our nom! nutrition and cooking programs are designed to build confidence in the kitchen, improve food literacy and empower community members to make healthier food choices.
Through fun, interactive sessions, participants learn practical skills including healthy eating, shopping on a budget, meal planning, food safety, reading food labels and reducing household food waste.
More than just nutrition education, nom! brings people together. Through hands-on cooking experiences, participants share meals, exchange ideas and build social connections while discovering simple, affordable and nutritious recipes the whole family can enjoy.
Programs can be tailored to suit a range of community groups and delivered as one-off workshops, multi-session programs, community events or school holiday activities. Popular topics include healthy eating, packing nutritious lunches and snacks, shopping on a budget, reducing food waste, food and knife safety, and money-saving meal planning strategies. Did you also know that nom! can adapt its content to align with your community wellbeing events and health promotion initiatives?
As councils plan activities for the months ahead, nom! can support a range of key community campaigns and events. During Women’s Health Week, sessions can focus on practical nutrition strategies to support wellbeing. Anti-Poverty Week provides an opportunity to explore budget-friendly meal planning and reducing food waste, while National Nutrition Week can help communities learn simple ways to create healthier meals and increase vegetable intake. Children’s Week and school holiday periods are also ideal for family-focused cooking programs that bring children, parents and grandparents together to learn, cook and share meals.
The impact of these programs is best reflected by participants themselves. One attendee from a recent nom! Families session shared:
“Foodbank nom! for parents and children is a fun program where you can learn to provide healthy food on a budget and easy to make. The children get to know how fun and easy cooking is!”
By partnering with us, local governments can support priorities around healthy eating, food literacy, food security and community connection, while delivering engaging programs that residents genuinely enjoy.
