R U OK? Day:

Building connection and care

Foodbank WA came together across Perth and our regional branches to mark R U OK? Day 2026,

creating meaningful opportunities for staff and volunteers to connect, check in and support one another.

The day served as an important reminder that looking out for each other is at the heart of who we are and helps build the caring, inclusive culture we value across our organisation.

This year’s key message was simple but powerful:

Everyone is carrying something you can’t see. Take a moment to listen, reflect and connect.

Across our branches, teams took time out of their day to share cupcakes, enjoy morning teas and have conversations that can make a real difference. It was a chance to slow down, strengthen relationships and remind one another that support often starts with a simple question,Are you OK?”

In Perth, staff participated in an interactive morning tea activity designed to encourage reflection and empathy. Three large boards were placed around the room, each featuring thought-provoking questions. Team members were invited to read responses from colleagues and add their own reflections using sticky notes. As the boards filled with personal insights, stories and words of encouragement, they became a powerful reminder of the experiences and challenges we may not always see in others.

The activity created an opportunity to learn from one another, build understanding and foster greater kindness across our workplace.

Regional branches also embraced the spirit of the day in a variety of ways. Highlights included:
  • Displaying R U OK? Day resources and sharing information about the importance of asking, listening and checking in.
  • Encouraging meaningful conversations between staff and volunteers.
  • Sharing cupcakes and conversations throughout the day.
  • Extending the message of connection and care to clients in some locations.
  • Reinforcing that a simple conversation can have a lasting and meaningful impact.
  • Celebrating our shared commitment to creating a supportive workplace where everyone feels valued, respected and connected.

R U OK? Day reminded us that while we all have different experiences, we each play an important role in looking out for one another.

Whether through a conversation over a cupcake, a thoughtful question or simply taking the time to listen, small actions can have a significant impact.

Thank you to everyone across Foodbank WA who helped make the day a success and contributed to creating a workplace where people feel supported, connected and cared for.
