Finding Foodbank support during the cost of living crisis

For the past four to five years, Foodbank WA has been an important source of support for 64-year-old Margaret, helping her navigate the increasing pressures of the cost of living crisis.

With a full-time carer and rising household expenses, Margaret says Foodbank has made a significant difference in her day-to-day life.

This year alone, her rent has increased by more than 20 per cent, adding further strain to an already tight budget.

“Foodbank helps me a lot,” she said.

On average, Margaret estimates she saves between $200 and $300 each fortnight by accessing Foodbank, allowing her to redirect precious funds towards essential living costs.

“I love that I can find a whole range of stuff at Foodbank,” she said. “Sometimes there are dog packs, there’s so much cereal too. The bread – I just love it all. Even a big tub of ice cream.”

Like many people accessing support for the first time, Margaret admits it wasn’t easy to ask for help.

“It took a little while to come to terms with putting up my hand and asking for help. I’m 64. It’s not easy to ask for help.”

Looking ahead, Margaret is excited about the opening of the new Foodbank branch in Dalyellup which replaces the Bunbury branch in her area. She believes it will make the service more accessible for local residents, particularly those who rely on public transport.

“More people will be able to get there and access what they need,” she said.

For Margaret, Foodbank is more than just groceries – it provides relief, dignity and support during a time when many Western Australians are feeling the impact of rising living costs.
