School Fruit Van Program reaches 125 schools

What began as a small pilot program has grown into a vital initiative supporting the health and wellbeing of thousands of students across Perth.

Foodbank’s School Fruit Van Program was established in 2014 with just 10 participating schools.

Demand for the program quickly grew, expanding to 50 schools by the end of its first year and reaching 75 schools in 2018.

Thanks to the ongoing support of Perth Airport and the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation, the program has now expanded to 125 schools across the Perth metropolitan area, stretching from Alkimos in the north to Armadale in the south.

Each week, participating schools receive a delivery of approximately 10 kilograms of fresh, seasonal fruit, ensuring students have access to healthy and nutritious fruit throughout the school week. Deliveries take place five days a week, with our dedicated School Fruit Van team travelling across Perth to reach schools where the need is greatest.

The program plays an important role in supporting student wellbeing, helping children stay nourished, focused and ready to learn.

For many schools, the fruit provided through the program is a valued resource that enables staff to offer healthy food options to students who may otherwise go without.

The success and continued growth of the School Fruit Van Program would not be possible without the generous support of Perth Airport and the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation, which covers both the purchase and the delivery of the fruit to schools.

The fresh fruit supplied through the program is sourced from Newton Orchards in Manjimup, supporting local growers and suppliers while delivering high-quality produce to students across the metropolitan area.

As the program continues to grow, it remains focused on its core mission: ensuring more children have access to fresh, healthy food at school and creating positive outcomes for student health, wellbeing and learning.
