Noongar artists invited to help shape Foodbank WA’s new South West facility

Foodbank WA is inviting Noongar artists connected to Wardandi Country to play a significant role in the creation of a new community landmark, with Expressions of Interest now open for the public artwork program at its new South West facility in Dalyellup.

The purpose-built facility, currently under construction and due for completion later this year, will support communities across the South West for decades to come. As part of the project, Foodbank WA is seeking local artists to contribute works that celebrate culture, community and connection to Country.

Three creative opportunities are available, including the design and delivery of a large-scale exterior mural, a graphic design package and a professional photography suite. The commissioned artworks will become integral features of the facility, helping to create a welcoming and culturally meaningful space for staff, volunteers, partners and community members.

Foodbank WA believes the artwork program is an important opportunity to ensure the voices, stories and creative perspectives of local Noongar people are reflected in the facility from the very beginning. The selected works will help tell the story of the South West community while recognising the enduring connection of Noongar people to Wardandi Country. Through art, the project aims to celebrate local identity, a sense belonging and create a lasting legacy that reflects the values of connection, dignity and community that underpin Foodbank WA’s work.

“As we continue building our new South West facility, it is important that the space reflects the community it will serve. Through this artwork program, we have a unique opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Wardandi Country and showcase the talent and creativity of local Noongar artists. We are delighted to invite Expressions of Interest and look forward to seeing how these works help tell the story of community, connection and belonging.”

Gnaala Karla Booja Arts and Cultural Development Coordinator, Dellas Bennell, said the partnership will support and empower Aboriginal artists, while ensuring the project is delivered with strong cultural respect and integrity.

“This partnership demonstrates the power of working together to amplify Noongar voices. GKB’s involvement in this project will ensure the artwork reflects the cultural, historical and geographical stories of Noongar Country, while creating opportunities for local artists to share their knowledge, creativity and connection to Country.

Successful artists will also work closely with our Elders and Cultural Advisors to develop their concepts, and further honour local Cultural authority.”

Expressions of Interest are open now and close on 31 August.

About Foodbank WA

Hello, we’re Foodbank WA. We believe everyone should have access to healthy food. There are Western Australians going without every day, and we are working hard to change that.

We provide food and groceries to those who struggle to afford them. We also deliver nutrition education to promote healthy eating and advocate on behalf of people that experience hunger and food insecurity.

We are here to support Western Australians in times of need. We do this through:

  • Providing 9.3 million meals last financial year to those who were doing it tough
  • Distributing food and groceries through 550 frontline charities
  • Providing breakfast and fruit to 550 schools feeding 27,300 children weekly
  • Delivering nutrition education attendances to over 6,546 children, adults and parents

We work with farmers, wholesalers, manufactures and retailers who donate and redirect surplus product to us. This also plays a vital role in tackling food waste and positively contributes to climate change by reducing CO2 emissions arising from landfill.

Our purpose is to Feed. Educate. Advocate.
