Noel Nicholson mural honours a lasting legacy
A few months ago, we shared news of a special project to refresh our volunteer kitchen in honour of Noel Nicholson, who sadly passed away last November.
Working closely with Noel’s family, we have carefully ensured the renewed space reflects his legacy while creating a warm, welcoming and practical environment for the many volunteers who dedicate their time to supporting Foodbank WA’s mission.
A key feature of the refreshed kitchen is a commemorative mural created in Noel’s honour. More than a piece of artwork, the mural celebrates Noel’s life, the impact he had on those around him, and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
Inspired by the concept of the Tree of Life, the mural symbolises the journey we all share. Like a tree, life is made up of smooth paths and rough edges, twists and turns, and what may appear to be imperfections. Yet these imperfections are not flaws; they are the experiences that shape us and form the story of our lives.
The artwork also reflects the circle of life, acknowledging both continuity and renewal, endings and new beginnings.
Its colour palette draws inspiration from Foodbank WA’s own vibrant colours, incorporating tones reminiscent of bacon, tomato, pumpkin and fresh greens. These familiar hues create a meaningful connection between Noel and Foodbank, recognising the important role both have played in nourishing and strengthening our community.
Created in an abstract style with influences of stained-glass windows, the mural invites personal reflection and interpretation. Just as people can stand at the same window and look upon the same scene yet each see something different, every person who knew Noel carries their own unique memories and connection to him. This artwork honours those individual perspectives while celebrating the collective impact of a man who meant so much to so many.
