Going the extra km to feed 73,000 Victorians a day

Australia is a country of sporting legends.

Who can forget Cathy Freeman’s gold-medal run that united our nation? Sir Donald Bradman’s folklore-defining cricket career. Dawn, Thorpie, Arnie, Kieren, Shane Gould and all the champions of the pool. Lionel Rose in the ring, Layne Beachley in the surf, Ash Barty on the court, and Gout Gout on the precipice. We even celebrate a horse with the biggest heart of them all.

But as a group of (not so elite) runners from Foodbank Victoria gets set to tackle the Ballarat Marathon, there is one sporting superstar’s story that inspires like no other. It’s the tale of Ballarat local Steve Moneghetti, who competed in his first-ever marathon at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. At the last minute. And then won a medal! Primarily a 10,000m runner at the time, Moneghetti went on to become one of Australia’s most decorated long-distance runners.

This April, our crew of 20 will lace up and follow in Moneghetti’s footsteps around Lake Wendouree, as we run in the 5km and 10km events to raise much-needed funds for Foodbank as part of the Ballarat Marathon.

Why? Because it takes a lot to keep Foodbank running, to put food on the tables of 73,000 Victorians every single day. But this marathon effort is nothing compared to what so many families are going through to feed their kids: skipping meals, going days without food. And that’s not okay.

Which is why we’re running, jogging and walking on their behalf. The more funds we can raise, the more food we can purchase to support every Victorian doing it tough across the state.

All we need now are some food angels to support us. Can you help us reach our target of $25,000? Right now, every donation is matched, meaning every $1 = 4 meals – we’ll be raising 100,000 meals and that’s going to get all of us across the finish line. There’s no bigger incentive. Just a few cheese toasties post event to sweeten the deal.

Thanks from all of us!

Help us raise 100,000 meals!

Launching nom! Recipes #3

We are excited to share the launch of nom! Recipes #3 booklet, the newest addition to our growing collection of practical, healthy and affordable recipes.

As with every nom! resource, this book has been created by our team of qualified Public Heath Nutritionists who understand the realities many households face, including time pressures, tight budgets and sometimes limited access to fresh food.

This 38-page recipe booklet, has a focus on how to make sustainable eating easy, reduce food waste, store food appropriately and safely, and save time in the kitchen.

We believe cooking is more than preparing a meal.

It is about confidence, creativity, and giving people the knowledge and skills to make the most of what they have. This new recipe booklet continues that mission, offering easy step-by-step dishes that can be made with everyday items. We’re the experts on showing how simple ingredients. including low-cost pantry staples, can be whipped up into delicious, family friendly recipes that don’t stretch the budget. Enjoy great recipes like Overnight Oats, Gorgeous Green Salad, Nasi Goreng, Greek Chicken and Spiced Plum Cups.

The recipes have been tested in our kitchens, cooked in our nom! sessions and loved by families across Western Australia. You will find filling breakfasts, hearty dinners, quick lunches, lunchbox ideas and sweet treats that use accessible ingredients. Each recipe is designed to support healthier habits without adding stress to someone’s day.

nom! Recipes #3 booklet offers more than just recipes, it also features a collection of clear, practical infographics covering topics such as the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, food waste and sustainability, food storage, budget-friendly time savers, meal planning and food safety. These visuals break down nutrition information, making it easy to remember to make healthier choices every day.

For our nom! network, this new recipe booklet offers fresh teaching opportunities too. It builds on the strong foundation of our nom! programs and provides new ways to engage communities in cooking and conversations about healthy eating. Whether you are running a cooking demo, supporting a community group or guiding participants through food budgeting, nom! recipes 3 gives you reliable content you can trust.

We hope you enjoy this new recipe collection.

Coming to Superhero Foods HQ soon.

A special night at Community Cinemas

Our recent Community Cinemas event reminded us why moments of connection matter, and why partnerships like the one we share with Harvey Fresh and Lactalis make such a difference.

We were delighted to welcome representatives from Lactalis. The Melbourne locals shared how much they enjoyed being back in Perth and how valuable it was to reconnect with our community while in Western Australia.

They had attended the Busselton Swim which saw more than 4,000 participants and were energised by the opportunity to spend time with partners and local supporters.

The night was full of warmth and gratitude. Many of our customers took the time to personally thank Harvey Fresh for their ongoing support. Their messages were heartfelt and left a lasting impression on our valuable partners. A family currently experiencing homelessness attended and were shown unexpected kindness when a member of the public offered them $100 so the children could enjoy a small treat. Another moment saw volunteers offer food to a man sleeping rough nearby. These gestures captured the dignity and care that Community Cinemas brings to life.

Every attendee received a beanbag, drink and popcorn. Even though we had shared this ahead of time, people were still surprised and delighted. It helped make the evening feel truly special.

Those who attended were loved the night and commented on the joy they witnessed among customers and volunteers and the clear impact community events like this have.

What our customers told us

The feedback we received after the event speaks for itself:

  • “Thank you for a lovely evening. Sometimes we need a little sunshine to brighten our days… my lifeline comes from Foodbank. Thank you.”
  • “It was an amazing event and I really enjoyed it. I came by myself but still had a great time. If you ever need any volunteers, I would be happy to help.”
  • “Thank you to Harvey Fresh for sponsoring and thank you for the popcorn.”
  • “Another huge thanks for all you do. I really enjoyed the movie.”
  • “Thanks to Foodbank and Harvey Fresh for making it possible.”

This night reminded us why community matters. With the support of partners like Harvey Fresh and Lactalis, we can continue to create experiences that bring joy, dignity and connection to Western Australians doing it tough.

Run for a Reason to support Foodbank WA

We are excited to share that Foodbank WA has been chosen as a charity partner for the 2026 HBF Run for a Reason.

This is a wonderful opportunity for us to come together to feed hope across Western Australia. Every step you take helps us support Western Australians doing it tough. We see the real impact that fundraising has on families facing hardship. Together we feed, educate and advocate for our community.

When you walk, run or wheel, you help make healthy food more accessible for people who need it.

Last year we provided more than 9.3 million meals thanks to the generosity of our supporters and partners. Your fundraising helps us keep shelves stocked, our Mobile Foodbank on the road and our nutrition education programs running in schools and communities.

Getting involved is simple. Visit the HBF Run for a Reason website to register for the event, then select Foodbank WA as your chosen charity and set up your fundraising page. Ask your family, friends and colleagues to support you then celebrate your impact on event day.

Every dollar raised provides food and essentials to people doing it tough. Your steps help families just like Bo Anne’s. As a single mum caring for her son through a kidney transplant, she found hope again through food relief and community support.

Join us, run with purpose and help feed hope in our community.

Fuel and Flourish makes mealtimes easier

At Foodbank WA, we know that the early years shape a child’s lifelong relationship with food.

That’s why we’re proud to have been instrumental in the development of Fuel and Flourish, a new nutrition and feeding program within the Bright Tomorrows app that gives parents simple ways to help their children develop healthy habits.

Fuel and Flourish is designed for parents and caregivers of young children up to five years of age.

It offers an easy, supportive way to build confidence at mealtimes. Parents can explore a range of “growth programs” in the app that include interactive activities, called moments, as well as practical parent tips. Everything is grounded in behaviour change principles, so the guidance feels realistic and fits into everyday life.

What makes the Fuel and Flourish program special is how simple it is to use. Each moment shows parents how to support their child’s development through food, with ideas that can be tried that same day. The tips and strategies are evidence informed and created by childhood development and nutrition experts, so parents can trust the advice. And with quick links to recipes, resources and nom! content, it’s easy to keep learning.

Parents tell us they want reassurance at mealtimes, not pressure. Fuel and Flourish helps take the stress out of feeding young children. It encourages responsive feeding, strengthens mealtime routines and connection helping families create a positive food environment right from the start.

Because it sits within the Bright Tomorrows app, parents get more than nutrition guidance. They receive support for emotions, play, learning and development. It’s a holistic experience that helps families feel more confident, capable and connected.

Fuel and Flourish shows that small moments can make a big difference. When we give parents the tools they need, we help children grow, explore and thrive.

nom! Schools helping students discover healthy choices

In 2025, Foodbank WA continued to bring nutrition education to life through nom! Schools, reaching more students, teachers, and school communities across Western Australia.

We visited 38 schools and delivered 118 hands‑on sessions to more than 1,740 students

Our team travelled across the state, from Newman, Port Hedland, Tom Price and Paraburdoo to Bunbury, Geraldton and across the Perth metro area.

Teachers told us how much the program meant to their students. Every session helped students see that healthy eating can be simple, tasty and fun with reports that many students continued cooking our nom! recipes at home. A teacher said, “The entire experience was well structured, engaging and meaningful for our students. Every component from the hands-on activities to the food tastings contributed positively to student learning and enthusiasm around healthy eating.”

Another teacher shared, “This program is invaluable for Aboriginal students living in remote communities. Any program that highlights healthy foods cooked in a tasty and easy way is a wonderful opportunity to have a positive influence on young children.”

These stories reflect the heart of nom! Schools. They show what happens when students are given a safe, hands-on space to explore food, learn practical skills and discover the joy in creating something healthy for themselves. This aligns with our wider work highlighted in our Annual Impact Report, where nom! continues to build healthy habits across the state.

Looking ahead to 2026

In 2026 we will continue to grow the reach of nom! Schools and deepen our impact in classrooms and communities. We are proud to continue our partnership with Mineral Resources and PLS for the third year. With their support, we will deliver three trips to the Pilbara and visit schools in Bunbury, Geraldton and the Perth metro area. These partnerships help us reach more students in regional areas, where access to hands‑on nutrition education and cooking sessions can make a real difference.

We are excited for another year of inspiring young people to build healthy habits that last a lifetime. Every session gives students “vital life skills and knowledge” to make informed food choices, and we are proud to be part of their journey.

How Kate O’Hara
leads us to
Balance the Scales this International Women’s Day

Balance the Scales is more than a theme for us, it is a call to action.

At Foodbank WA, we see what happens when inequality pushes women to the edges. Rising living costs, food insecurity and limited access to safe support systems mean many women carry burdens they should never have to face alone.

Kate O’Hara brings decades of leadership experience shaped by community building, strategic communication and her deep commitment to people.

Her background in place making, digital strategy, philanthropy, residential development and community engagement has equipped her with a clear understanding of how systems shape lived experience, especially for women seeking safety and stability.

Since joining Foodbank WA, Kate has focused on strengthening our purpose to feed, educate and advocate. She champions partnerships that lift communities, not just meet their immediate needs. Her approach reflects a belief that fairness must be built intentionally, from the ground up.

“Balance the Scales speaks to the heart of what fairness should look like. Every woman deserves to feel safe, respected and supported when life becomes difficult”, says Kate.

“We meet women every day who show extraordinary strength. Our job is to make sure the systems around them honour that strength, not work against it.”

In her role, Kate continues to build strong relationships with charity partners, corporates and community groups to build long lasting change across Western Australia. She believes that community connection is how we start to Balance the Scales. Not with grand gestures, but with practical support, shared responsibility and a commitment to fairness.

On International Women’s Day, we recognise the women and girls who face barriers in accessing justice, safety and security. We also recognise the leaders who work to change this. “When we create systems that treat all women with dignity, everyone benefits. Balance the Scales is a reminder that equality is not a privilege, it is a right.”, she says.

Kate’s focus on compassion, inclusion and systemic change reminds us that Balance the Scales is not an annual theme. It is a responsibility we carry every day.

Could one Chef help us keep up with rising demand?

When Chef Roland stepped into our Community Kitchen, we knew we were in good hands.

Thanks to our good friends and partners at Compass Group Australia, we welcomed Roland on a one year secondment to work alongside our own fabulous Chef Melissa.

This support could not have come at a better time. Our meals have never been more popular and demand keeps growing.

Roland brought with him a wealth of experience from his work with Compass Group Australia, where he provided catering and food service to a range of clients from schools to mine sites. His calm leadership and practical skills were felt from day one. He helped Chef Mel prepare meals, guided volunteers with safe cutting techniques and food safety and supported our corporate groups so they could confidently get involved.

With Roland by Chef Mel’s side, our Community Kitchen could increase weekly meal production by more than 800 to 1,000 meals. That meant our output grew from roughly 2,500 meals a week to close to 3,500. This is a huge lift that helps us get more nutritious meals into our branches across Western Australia.

One of the most memorable moments was when we received a donation of half a kangaroo carcass. Roland took on the challenge with enthusiasm. He prepared, skinned and cooked a beautiful kangaroo stew that filled the kitchen with rich aromas. When the supplier dropped in to try it, they loved it. We sent the stew out to our branches, and the feedback from customers was incredible.

Beyond the food, Roland fitted into our team straight away. He worked closely with volunteers who said they enjoyed learning from him and appreciated how he made our Community Kitchen feel supportive and welcoming. He always asked how he could help us achieve our goals each week and he meant it.

This partnership with Compass Group Australia shows what’s possible when organisations come together with a shared purpose. With Roland’s support, Chef Mel can now keep up with demand and we can continue providing meals that make a real difference for people doing it tough.

Stories like this remind us that every skill and every set of hands helps fuel our mission. We are so grateful to Compass Group Australia for their generosity and to Chef Roland for bringing heart, expertise and energy to our kitchen.

Roll up your sleeves and become a Foodbank Hero

Picture this:

Your team working side by side, sleeves rolled up, laughter in the air and knowing that every box you pack and every meal you prepare will go to someone who needs it most.

That’s the power of Corporate Volunteering at Foodbank WA.

Right now, more than 370,000 Western Australians are going without regular meals.

Behind every number is a person, a family, a story. We need your help to change that.

When your organisation joins us, you’re not just volunteering. You’re giving produce a second life, turning surplus food into meals and making sure it reaches those who need it most. You’ll work as a team, have fun and leave knowing you’ve changed lives.

Choose from hands-on experiences like:

Corporate Volunteering is more than a team-building day. It’s a chance to live your values, inspire your staff and become a Foodbank Hero.

Sign up today and turn your next team day into something extraordinary. Email teamvolunteering@foodbankwa.org.au or visit https://www.foodbank.org.au/wa/want-to-help/volunteer-with-us

From Mission service to our warehouse family

Meet Caleb

Caleb first joined us two years ago as part of his Mission with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Back then we knew him as Elder, a young person full of enthusiasm who brought warmth and energy into every space he worked in.

When his Mission finished, Caleb didn’t step away.

He continued volunteering with us, showing the same commitment to helping Western Australians doing it tough. His positivity and willingness to help wherever needed made him a valued and trusted part of our team.

At the end of last year we were pleased to offer Caleb a paid role as a Storeperson. He worked with us two days a week through to the end of January, helping us through an incredibly busy period. His support was a big part of how we kept things moving for our branches and our customers.

Now we are into February and heading towards March, and although his paid role has wrapped up, Caleb hasn’t stopped. He is back to volunteering, showing up with the same steady presence that makes a real difference to our warehouse team. His willingness to keep helping, even after his contract ended, speaks volumes about who he is and why so many of us enjoy working alongside him.

We are grateful for everything Caleb has contributed over the past two years, from his Mission service to his volunteer work. And we are even more grateful that he continues to stand with us as we support Western Australians who need a hand.

Caleb is a reminder that sometimes the greatest impact comes from people who simply keep showing up.
