Student food insecurity:

Supporting WA students

For many university students, the rising cost of living is making it increasingly difficult to access healthy, nutritious food.

Through our partnership with Allianz Partners, Foodbank is helping to ease that burden while shining a light on the growing issue of student food insecurity.

The collaboration began in 2024 with the launch of a series of university food markets across Australia, providing vital food relief to students while raising awareness about the often-overlooked challenges many face. The initiative was inspired by Allianz Partners’ State of Student Healthcare Report, which found that more than one-third of international students in Australia struggle to afford fresh fruit and vegetables. The report also revealed that 74% of students are experiencing financial pressure, highlighting the significant impact of the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Here in Western Australia, Allianz Partners funded two highly successful university food market days last year, helping thousands of students access nutritious food at no cost.

The first event, held at Murdoch University in April, supported almost 600 students and saw more than 5,000 kilograms of fresh fruit, vegetables and pantry staples distributed throughout the day.

Demand was even greater at our second food market at The University of Western Australia, where an impressive 1,292 students attended. By the end of the event, 7,444 kilograms of food had found its way into students’ homes, including fresh produce such as apples, mandarins, potatoes and onions, alongside a range of pantry essentials.

Building on the success of these markets, we returned to Murdoch University in July this year. More than 2,800 kilograms of food was distributed, including fresh fruit and vegetables and additional pantry stock, providing valuable support to students facing financial pressures.

These food markets offer much more than groceries.

They provide students with easy access to nutritious food, help reduce the stress associated with rising living costs and create opportunities for important conversations about food insecurity in Australia.

We are incredibly grateful to Allianz Partners for their ongoing support and commitment to tackling food insecurity among university students. Together, we’re helping ensure that more students can focus on their studies without worrying about where their next healthy meal will come from.

Stay tuned for more university food market days across WA and around Australia.
