Cox Automotive Australia teams up with Foodbank to drive away hunger

Drive Away Hunger – a Cox Automotive global campaign – is an initiative aimed to support local foodbanks in a bid to help world hunger.

For the fourth consecutive year, Cox Automotive Australia (CAA) brands across Australia ran a 12-day food drive, with all donations going to Foodbank.

As part of the initiative, CAA invited all staff to take part in a nationwide CANstruction – building sculptures entirely of donated food!

Here are some of the marvelous creations….

Over 12 days, a total of 1,741 kilograms was collected and donated to Foodbank – including 270 kilograms to Foodbank Victoria. This gigantic donation will provide more than 3,130 meals to Australians who may be struggling to put food on the table.

“Supporting our local community is a value we as a company take very seriously. We encourage our team members to volunteer and help out as much as possible,” said a Manheim staff member.

Thank you to Autotrader, CarsGuide, Dealer Solutions, Manheim, Sell My Car and Xtime for choosing Foodbank for this CAN-tastic initiative!

Team Foodbank runs Melbourne

Fundraisers young and old braved the cold to run against hunger for Foodbank!

It may have been a chilly mid-winter morning, but that didn’t stop Team Foodbank from turning up the heat at this year’s Run Melbourne event on Sunday, 28 July.

Nearly sixty walkers and runners took to the streets of Melbourne’s CBD to take on the 5km walk/run, 10km run or Half Marathon.

The Foodbank spirit was alive and collectively, more than $10,000 was raised to help vulnerable Victorians through the winter months.

This year, Team Foodbank was joined by fundraisers from all ages. Prep to Year 12 students from Cullen House, St Leonard’s College, sported Foodbank jerseys as they conquered the race around Melbourne, raising more than $850 in the lead up to the event.

Meanwhile the youngest addition to the team, six-year-old Max D’Alessandro, raised more over $1,700 for his first ever Run Melbourne, and alongside his family, completed the 10km run with a proud smile on his face!

It truly was an inspirational day filled with determination, compassion and kindness.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone that joined and supported Team Foodbank for Melbourne’s most anticipated running event of the year!

School Spotlight: Bundarra Primary School

With the number of activities on offer for students at Bundarra Primary School’s Breakfast Club, grabbing a nutritious breakfast is just another bonus. At Breakfast Club students have the option of playing with puzzle books and card games, practising their colouring skills with food themed colouring sheets, or trying their hand at breakfast trivia. The room is also decorated with breakfast themed pictures and information.

The games and activities help create a very social environment for students, which encourages a large turnout each morning.

Here’s what Bundarra PS Breakfast Club Coordinator, Katie had to say:

“We open at 8:30am every morning serving breakfast to anyone who wants it – sometimes even mums, dads, grandparents and friends eat with their kids! Our Breakfast Club is based in an old kitchen that’s been cleaned up and has become the social safe hub of our school. We have books, puzzles, weekly trivia, colouring sheets and card games available every day. We have a Breakfast Club playlist that the kids choose songs to be added to and is played every morning – there has been the occasional dance off! The kids know there will always be a place to go and someone to talk to.

We have a ‘Breakfast Team’ of 3 senior students that change each term. Part of their job is to greet other students when they arrive in the kitchen, they keep breakfast running smoothly – helping make toasted sandwiches, toast and apple slinkies and help clean up when breakfast is finished. The Breakfast Team are rostered on twice a week although they often still come in and help out on the other days! The kitchen is open to the whole school and its awesome watching kids interact with other students they normally wouldn’t interact with. We can’t thank Foodbank enough for giving us the opportunity to be able to provide this for our school community and without the amazing generosity of Bakers Delight in Portland we wouldn’t have the variety of food we do.”

Did you know that by supporting Foodbank NSW & ACT you’re actually supporting over 500 charities?

And on top of that you’re supporting over 100 schools as well!

You see not only does Foodbank NSW & ACT directly help people affected by food insecurity we also provide food to other charity partners who source food for their programmes from Foodbank.

You might be surprised to learn that over 11 million kilos of food is sourced by Foodbank and distributed by other charities you would already know.

Charities like the Salvation Army, Anglicare, Vinnies and The Smith Family all operate food relief programs with food from our warehouse.

In total 676 charities and 139 schools all receive food from Foodbank.

Every time you support us, you’re supporting so many respected organisations – feels good doesn’t it?

Natalie Kistan from Salvation Army had this to say:

“Foodbank NSW & ACT provides us with food every week so we can feed the hundreds of community members that come through our donors. We are so grateful to Foodbank donors for ensuring the Salvos can continue to serve those struggling in our community. Thank you!”

An Update from Shiralee

Shiralee and her husband John are fifth generation farmers, struggling through the worst drought we’ve seen in decades.

Shiralee was hesitant when she first went to her local Foodbank Pantry. She wasn’t used to having to ask for help. But she now thanks Foodbank supporters just like you for ensuring she could access these pantry staples, which made life that little bit easier during such a difficult time.

Although Shiralee’s town has been blessed with some rain unfortunately, this doesn’t replace the opportunities lost from failed crops and being forced to sell livestock.

Many farmers won’t have an income for 12-18 months’ post drought. Sadly, the damage has been done so our farming families will continue to need assistance for the foreseeable future.

Our farmers are in for a tough few years rebuilding their crops and stock, but with Foodbank supporters on our side we can ensure no farmer is left behind.

Thanks to our supporters, we are on track to send almost 4 million kilos of food to areas affected by drought this year. Just like our Aussie farmers – together we hope that the drought will finally break.

From happy and healthy to alone and unable to feed her family

Katherine’s day always started early, driving from Sydney’s Southwest to Botany where she managed a car rental company.
While it wasn’t always easy maintaining a mix of work and family, life was good.

Sadly, through no fault of her own, things were about to change.
Katherine lost her job unexpectedly, two months later her long-term relationship fell apart.

Katherine has been diagnosed with a chronic condition which has meant she lives in constant pain and is on a long waiting list for a procedure she needs in order to be pain free and healthy again. That wait is even longer since she was forced to cancel her private health insurance in order to provide food for her children.

“I’m waiting for surgery through the public health system and once I do have my operation, I won’t be able to drive for 8 weeks. I’m in a catch 22. I really need a job but if I’m honest about my circumstances I probably won’t get the job.” – Katherine

Katherine has every right to give up, but instead she’s studying part time to finish a diploma in community services.

She’s also volunteering at a local Foodbank Pantry in her area. It’s the same pantry she visits herself to make ends meet when she doesn’t have enough food to feed her family. I guess you could say it’s her way of giving back.

Katherine is a determined, hardworking single mother with a plan to help put her life together. But for now, she still needs a little help.

Will you be there for Katherine whilst she gets back on her feet?

Little Max ready to Run Melbourne with Foodbank

Run Melbourne is fast approaching, and this week, we had the pleasure of meeting the youngest addition to our team – Max D’Alessandro.

Sporting his Foodbank running shirt, Max stopped by our warehouse with parents, Stacy and Geoff, to donate food that he bought with pocket money he had been saving in his Barefoot Investor inspired ‘Give Jar.’

Max and his family have been training for the 5km walk/run around Melbourne’s CBD by attending weekly Park Runs in their local community.

“We usually go together. We also have a one year old and a three year old and Geoff pushes them in the pram whilst Max and I run,” said Stacy.

The entire family have been fundraising for Max’s first ever Run Melbourne, and have already raised more than $1,400 for Foodbank Victoria.

When asked how Max had heard about Foodbank, Geoff explained that “a local charity provide breakfast to kids at his school every Thursday morning. Max asked me why they do this, and I told him that sadly, some kids go without food. Stacy also reads the Barefoot Investor, so Max has been earning pocket money for his Give Jar. He gets an extra $2 a week for taking the neighbour’s bins out.”

Max has inspired those around him, including his teachers and fellow students at his Craigieburn school where he was featured in the school newsletter.

The speedy six-year-old revealed that he was excited to run around Melbourne and help kids his age that may be going hungry.

“I wanted to teach him the importance of kindness and giving at a young age, and how good it makes you feel to help others. He loves running, so we thought we would incorporate the two,” said Stacy.

We are so excited to have young Max on our team and cannot wait to see him cross the finish line on Sunday 28 July.

Socceroo legend serves up breaky

Students of Campbellfield Public School in Sydney’s south west were treated to a soccer superstar serving them breakfast earlier this month.

Tim Cahill, Weet-Bix Ambassador, attended the breakfast club on a chilly morning before the school bell rang, to help serve Weet-Bix, toast, delicious fresh fruit and hot drinks to 180 local students attending Foodbank NSW & ACT’s School Breakfast 4 Health Program.

Breakfast club has never been so busy or chaotic with children lining up, hoping to be served by the ex-Socceroo striker himself. With breakfast eaten and tummies full ready to start the day, Tim led the assembly with ball juggling and words of inspiration, ‘Make your dreams big and bright, there’s no limit to what you can achieve!’.

More than 1 in 5 Australian children have experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months – right here in our backyard. Foodbank currently supplies 2,600 charities and provides 272,000 school breakfasts a week to more than 132,000 children in 2,000 schools.

Sanitarium, one of Foodbank’s National Donors, provides the iconic cereal in addition to other products to Foodbank School Breakfast programs around the country.

The Foodbank School Breakfast programs operate smoothly thanks to our generous National Donors and state government funding in various states.

Theresa’s story

“In March of 2005 my world as I knew it shattered.”

“In one phone call I went from a happy mother of two grown children and three treasured grandchildren to having only one child and two grandchildren in hospital, one with life threatening injuries.

My 27 year old daughter Sarah and six year old grandchild William, had not survived the accident. I didn’t think things could get any worse.”

“The next few years saw me crossing the country to be there for my grandchildren. Upon joining the Wanslea Family Services Grandcarers Group in 2008, I was blessed with support, understanding and most importantly, my first Foodbank WA card.”

“The money I saved allowed me a few luxuries for the children like new shoes or the occasional outing.”

“Having relied on Foodbank WA for years before becoming a volunteer, I am well aware of the life altering benefits they provide to financially challenged families. The ability to put healthy, low-priced food on the table allows money to be spent on other, normally affordable necessities.”

Heather and Glenn’s story

“Without Foodbank, our family would starve.”

Heather and Glenn were left with no choice but to rely on Foodbank WA to feed their family.

“We’ve been together for almost four years and have been relying on Foodbank to feed our family. Glenn is on a disability pension and I look after the kids.”

“Rent is so expensive. It’s impossible to keep on top of the bills and we often have nothing left for food. The kids are always hungry and when you haven’t even eaten yet yourself it’s frustrating. Without Foodbank, our family would starve.”

“We volunteer at a local charity in Armadale to try and help others however we can.”
