Nutrition Education
inspires young home chefs

When our nom! nutritionists visited Cassia Primary School in Port Hedland this June, they were joined by a special guest: Dan, Manager of Communities and Stakeholder Engagement at Mineral Resources (MinRes).

Dan came along to see our nom! Schools nutrition education program in action and quickly discovered that nom! is about much more than learning recipes.

He rolled up his sleeves, joined the students in the kitchen and helped create some delicious, healthy dishes.

What Dan didn’t expect was that the nom! experience would spark a cooking revolution at home!

Armed with a stack of nom! recipe booklets and a couple of aprons, Dan’s children wasted no time taking charge of the family kitchen.

“My kids have since orchestrated a coup d’état and taken over my kitchen,” Dan joked.

In just one week, the budding chefs cooked Winning Walnut Dip, Crazy Corn Dip with Toasty Flat Bread, Deadly Damper Scrolls, Legendary Lasagne, and even an Atomic Apple Crumble.

The enthusiasm was so great that the family had to limit themselves to one recipe per day, and even purchased an electric frying pan to make sure the young cooks had all the right equipment for the job!

Reflecting on the experience, Dan shared:

“It’s so exciting to see my kids getting interested in cooking for the first time.

Hopefully every young person you engage through nom! has the same experience.”

Stories like this are exactly why the nom! Schools program is so important. By building confidence in the kitchen and making healthy food fun (and tasty!), we’re helping young people develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

A huge thank you to Dan and the team at MinRes for their ongoing support of nom! Schools. We’re thrilled to hear about your family’s culinary adventures and can’t wait to see what recipes your aspiring chefs tackle next!
