At Costa, every mushroom counts

The generous people at Costa Mushrooms have been donating their nutritious mushrooms to Foodbank WA for many years.

Whenever we see Costa Mushrooms at our Perth Airport facility, we know that the bags will disappear quickly, which underscores their popularity and quality.

We were recently invited to see the operations at their Casuarina farm and were absolutely blown away by the sheer size of their facility, the care they place in delivering a top-quality product to the end customer (the mushrooms are all hand-harvested!) and how much emphasis is placed on safety and quality.

Mushrooms are a delicate crop that require a finely balanced environment to thrive. At the Costa Casuarina farm, cutting-edge technology works hand-in-hand with skilled growers to create the perfect growing conditions. Temperature, humidity, and airflow are carefully monitored around the clock 365 days a year, ensuring that each mushroom reaches the ideal size, texture, and taste before it is hand-picked.

The farm also embraces sustainable practices, recycling organic materials and using innovative water and energy management systems to reduce environmental impact. This dedication to sustainability not only benefits the planet but also ensures a cleaner, more natural product for consumers.

Setting Costa apart from their competitors, their composting process is the foundation of their mushroom cultivation and uses 100% recycled water and by-products from primary agricultural farming. The compost is made by a dedicated team at Nambeelup, before being freighted weekly to the Casuarina site and loaded into tunnels for pasteurisation, ensuring food safety.

Costa Group have their own spawn laboratory based in Mernda, VIC, where spawn (the ‘seeds’ of the mushroom world) is produced with exclusive genetics. Compost inoculation (the process which introduces the mushroom spawn or ‘seeds’ into a suitable growing space) occurs using strict high-care hygiene protocols and the latest technology, ensuring a strong mushroom root system, creating an ideal environment for mushroom growth.

Mushrooms grow quickly, doubling in size every 24 hours. Costa’s growing teams closely monitor crops to ensure the right products are available to their network of customers. To maximise quality and shelf life, every single mushroom is hand-picked directly into the final pack using a single-touch approach. Mushrooms are harvested and packaged in under 60 minutes, ensuring they are delivered fresh and fast. It’s clear to see that for Costa, it’s about more than just producing mushrooms – it’s about delivering a wholesome, nutritious product that families can trust.

Interim State Manager WA Sarah Moses puts it best: “Every mushroom that leaves our Casuarina farm represents the care and dedication of our team. We take great pride in knowing that our hard work is providing fresh, nutritious produce to the WA population.”

Mushrooms are known for adding a delicious flavour to dishes and side dishes, but they also pack a powerful nutrition punch. In fact, they are often touted as a superfood, and for good reason. Mushrooms have many health benefits, they are low in calories, cholesterol and sodium and are a good source of vitamins and minerals, making them a great addition to any diet.

From the farm floor to the family table, Costa Mushrooms continues to grow with one goal in mind – nourishing Australians with a product that is as fresh as it is flavourful.

Wheels of hope

The steady spin of wheels and the united drive of riders prove that when we come together for a cause, we can achieve something truly powerful.

On Sunday, 23 November 2025, the Perth Coastal Bike Ride returns – not just as a test of endurance, but as a celebration of community, compassion, and courage. We’re proud to be one of four charity partners benefiting from this incredible event.

Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just starting out, there’s a ride for everyone: 10km, 40km, 60km, 80km, or 100km. No matter the distance, every rider shares one goal – to make a difference.

This event, expertly managed by the Perth Integrated Events Team, raises vital funds and awareness for Foodbank WA and three other deserving charities. Every kilometre ridden helps us provide food relief to West Australians doing it tough.

Some ride in memory of loved ones. Others ride for the joy of giving back. But every pedal stroke sends a powerful message: hope can be built on two wheels.

Register now via Grassroots and ride for Foodbank WA. Your support helps us feed families across the state.

Not a cyclist? No problem! You can still be part of the day by volunteering to help with event operations. To get involved, email us at fundraising@foodbankwa.org.au.

This ride is more than a physical journey – it’s a reminder that strength is found in unity. Join us and be part of something meaningful

Alcoa continues to support Southwest communities

We are thrilled to announce that Alcoa Australia has committed to sponsoring our Peel Branch for a further three years.

This enables the purchase of a new Mobile Foodbank to expand the service across Pinjarra, Serpentine-Jarrahdale, Harvey, Waroona and Kwinana communities. The partnership will also allow us to expand our product range as demand for food assistance continues to rise.

The continuation of this partnership showcases Alcoa’s commitment to supporting the needs of the Southwest Communities across the Peel region stretching from Kwinana to Harvey.

The transformative power of Alcoa Australia’s support through their initial three-year partnership – which has been evidenced by significantly enhanced food relief services across the Peel region. Since July 2022, a total Social Return on Investment of $2.55M, Alcoa has helped us to respond to rising food insecurity, expand our operational capacity, and innovate the service delivery at the Peel Branch.

Over the course of the initial three-year partnership, the Peel Branch has delivered more than 2.6 million meals, including 986,834 meals in the past twelve months, marking a 53% increase from July 2022 when the partnership began.

Thanks to Alcoa Australia, we distributed 3,003 emergency hampers to 20 agency partners across Waroona, Serpentine-Jarrahdale, Kwinana, Peel, and Pinjarra. Their partnership also funded essential new equipment including two forklifts, fridge and freezer, improving client access to fresh and frozen goods and expanding food variety. Their generous funding also allowed us to pilot a successful weight-based handling fee model, now adopted by two other regional branches.

Alcoa’s commitment extended beyond funding, with staff volunteering in Perth warehouse and the Mobile Foodbank in Peel, packing over 3,000 meals and hampers in one day. Alcoa has also committed to a two-year sponsorship of the Peel Thunder Charity Game Day that support Foodbank Peel. In 2025 alone, this incredible event raised funds to provide 51,588 meals, helping us continue to raise awareness of food insecurity in our community.

“Alcoa’s support has been nothing short of transformative. Their funding has helped us respond to rising faood insecurity, expand our operational capacity, and pilot new service models that are now being adopted across other regional branches. During this cost-of-living crisis, their partnership is more vital than ever,” said Foodbank WA CEO Kate O’Hara.

President Alcoa Australia, Elsabe Muller said “Alcoa Australia is delighted to support Foodbank WA and the vital services they deliver for another three years. In the last year, Foodbank delivered more than 9.2 million meals to those in the WA community who may have otherwise gone without – a truly impressive achievement. Through our partnership, we have seen firsthand the positive impact the Foodbank Peel branch plays in supporting the most vulnerable in our communities with access to healthy food. With many of our employees living and working in Peel and the upper South West, we’re incredibly proud to once again stand alongside Foodbank.”

This partnership exemplifies the power of corporate-community collaboration by showcasing that with passion and determination we can build resilient and empowered communities together. We look forward to continuing this impactful relationship and expanding its reach across regional Western Australia.

National Nutrition Week

National Nutrition Week is a vital event that highlights the importance of healthy eating and its impact on our overall wellbeing.

This week serves as a reminder for individuals, families, communities, and organisations across the country to come together and celebrate the many ways that food can connect and nourish us.

National Nutrition Week is an opportunity to raise awareness about the significance of good nutrition and its role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

It encourages people to make informed food choices and adopt healthier eating habits. This week-long event is crucial in promoting the benefits of a balanced diet, which includes a variety of foods from all food groups, ensuring that we get the necessary nutrients our bodies need to function optimally.

We see food as more than just sustenance; it is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, it is a way to bring people together and create lasting memories. National Nutrition Week celebrates the diverse ways in which food can connect us. Families can bond over preparing and sharing meals, communities can come together for food festivals and cooking classes, and organisations can host events that promote healthy eating. These activities not only foster a sense of community but also highlight the cultural significance of food and its role in our lives.

We are proud to have a team of nine nutritionists and dietitians working across our various nom! programs and in regional and remote Western Australia. Our nutritionists are dedicated to delivering our nom! nutrition education and cooking programs that promote healthy eating on any budget. Through our programs, we aim to improve people’s knowledge, skills and confidence to make nutritious food choices. Our efforts extend to thousands of students in schools across the state, where we support schools to provide students with a healthy start to their day through our School Breakfast Program.

National Nutrition Week is a time to celebrate the power of food to connect and nourish us. It is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of good nutrition and the role it plays in our overall health. By coming together as families, communities, and organisations, we can promote healthier eating habits and create a supportive environment for everyone. We are committed to making a difference through our nutrition programs and the dedicated work of our nutritionists.

Let us all take this week to celebrate food and the positive impact it has on our lives.

Anti-Poverty Week

A call to action

Anti-Poverty Week is an essential initiative that aims to raise awareness about poverty and its far-reaching effects on communities.

This week-long event, held annually, encourages individuals, organisations, and governments to take action against poverty and support those in need. By shining a light on the issues faced by vulnerable populations, Anti-Poverty Week seeks to inspire change and foster a more equitable society.

Anti-Poverty Week brings attention to the often-overlooked issue of poverty and serves as a powerful reminder that poverty is not just a problem for developing countries but also affects many people in Australia.

During this week, various events and activities are organised to educate the public about poverty, its causes, and its consequences. These events provide a platform for people to share their experiences and advocate for policies that can help alleviate poverty.

Food insecurity is a significant issue in Western Australia, affecting 34% of households. Many families struggle to afford nutritious food, leading to health and wellbeing issues. Food insecurity can have long-term consequences, including poor physical and mental health, reduced academic performance in children, and increased stress and anxiety for adults. By addressing food insecurity, we can help improve the quality of life for many Western Australians and create a healthier, more resilient community.

At Foodbank, we are committed to empowering households to stay in their homes by helping them spend less on food without sacrificing quality and nutrition. We teach people new skills on how to eat well to be well and support them in taking steps with our partners to become self-reliant for the long term. All Western Australians deserve that opportunity.

We know that increased fuel, energy, insurance, rent, food and the daily cost of living expenses often see individuals go without food and necessities to make sure their children and pets don’t. This means people are often skipping meals, reducing portion sizes or even going entire days without eating.

As the cost-of-living crisis has deepened, many Western Australians turned to us for help – some for the very first time. We know asking for help can feel overwhelming, so feedback from our customers that we have made a real difference for them keeps us working hard to ensure nobody gets left behind.

Our recent customer survey certainly showed us that with the help of our generous partners, donors, growers we can changes people’s lives one meal at a time. One customer said, “The service is greatly appreciated. Not only does it assist me with good nutrition, but overall frees up some funds to enable a better quality of life. Big respect to all of the volunteers, who constantly how kindness and have a very positive attitude.” Another shared, “Thanks for what you do couldn’t survive without it.”

We are incredibly grateful to all our partners for who support our purpose to Feed., Educate. and Advocate. for everyday Western Australians by ensuring that we can provide nutritious and healthy food to those that need it the most.

By raising awareness and inspiring action, we can work together to create a more equitable and supportive community for all Western Australians. Let’s continue to support those in need and strive for a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

A world away from everything you know

With the onset of the cost-of-living crisis, and the help of Foodbank, Fatima was once able to save small amounts of money for special occasions, but not anymore.

The continuing cost of living crisis makes it simply impossible. “My rent used to be $400 and now it’s $650. Foodbank helps. If you are going through hard times like divorce, sickness, Foodbank helps.”

Fatima has lived in Australia for 16 years, moving from her home in Iraq with her husband and two children to ensure their future happiness and peace. When Fatima left Iraq in 2009, the country was emerging from the peak violence that followed the 2003 U.S. – led invasion, and the country remained volatile. Politically, Iraq was navigating a fragile democracy, and violence – though reduced – still posed a significant threat to the regions’ stability and to civilians.

The family dynamic changed dramatically when Fatima and her husband divorced. Not long after, she had two very serious spinal surgeries within nine months of each other, along with having her three children dependent on her. Formally a hairdresser, Fatima is now unable to work and has to rely on a disability pension. “Before I get paid, I am already thinking: I need to allocate $100 here, $200 there. My brain is in overdrive all the time. Even when I go to bed, I am thinking, how can I make this work this week? Foodbank definitely helps to supplement a grocery shop; it’s helped so much.”

Since the onset of the cost-of-living crisis, Fatima has had to give up a lot. “I regularly juggle bills. I’m a single parent, so it’s really hard.” Fatima’s daughter has since married and moved out of Fatima’s house, but her two sons are still living with her. “There have been times where I have not been able to pay the bills on time. The overdue reminders give me so much anxiety. There have been times when I haven’t eaten so that my kids can. The anxiety and depression can get to you.”

Fatima says that with the onset of the cost-of-living crisis, and with the help of Foodbank, she was able to save small amounts of money for special occasions, but not anymore. The cost of living makes it simply impossible. To those people struggling, Fatima says, “My rent used to be $400 and now it’s $650. Foodbank helps. If you are going through hard times like divorce, sickness, Foodbank helps.”

Fatima’s story is a testament to the resilience and strength of individuals facing immense challenges. Her journey highlights the critical role that Foodbank plays in providing support and relief to those in need. Through the ups and downs, Fatima’s determination to build a better life for her children shines through, reminding us all of the importance of community and support in times of hardship

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do

We are dedicated to
integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into our operations and long-term strategy and
have recently written our first ESG Commitment Statement.

Our commitment to ESG is not just a framework; it’s how we deliver on our purpose every day.

From reducing food waste to supporting everyday Western Australians, our initiatives align directly with ESG outcomes.

We are dedicated to reducing our environmental footprint through various initiatives.

By partnering with growers and producers, we ensure that surplus food reaches those in need rather than becoming landfill. Our branches are equipped with energy-efficient systems, including solar power and sensor lights, and we continuously optimise our logistics to minimise emissions. Less than 5% of sourced foods go to landfill, with appropriate waste going to local farmers as feed or to produce fertiliser. Our efforts in food waste diversion have significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a healthier environment.

Our social impact is at the heart of what we do. We provide millions of meals to Western Australians, including emergency food relief during natural disasters. Our School Breakfast Program reaches thousands of students, ensuring they start their day with a nutritious meal. We empower individuals with the knowledge to cook healthy meals on a budget and reduce their household food waste through our nutrition education programs. Our services reach remote communities, delivering food and support to areas with limited access to resources.

We uphold the highest standards of governance and accountability. Our Board oversees strategic planning to ensure long-term sustainability and impact. We adhere to strict food safety regulations and have robust risk management practices in place. Our Board and leadership team are committed to transparency, continuous improvement, and ethical decision-making.

Every kilo of food or dollar donated directly contributes to our environmental and social impact. We are grateful for the support of our corporate and food donors, whose contributions make a significant difference.

Together, we can build a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient Western Australia

nom! Schools delivers sessions in the red dirt

Our nom! Schools program recently made its inaugural visit to Tom Price Primary School and Paraburdoo Primary School, delivering a series of engaging nutrition education and cooking sessions over four days.

This visit marked the first time nom! Schools had ventured into these towns, and the response from both staff and students was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing interest for future visits.

During the visit, we delivered seven sessions, reaching a total of 159 students.

The sessions were centred around the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating lesson plan, which aims to educate students about the five food groups, the foods they include, and the essential nutrients they provide. This knowledge is crucial for helping students understand how to maintain a healthy mind and strong body.

One of the highlights of the visit was the involvement of numerous parent helpers. Their presence not only provided additional support during the sessions but also allowed them to see firsthand what their children were learning about nutrition and healthy eating. Many parents were enthusiastic about encouraging their children to cook recipes from the Best of Healthy Recipes for All recipe booklet at home, further reinforcing the lessons learned during the sessions.

The students themselves were highly engaged and excited about the activities, they particularly enjoyed the hands-on experience of cooking and eating the recipes. One student even said they were looking forward to cooking with friends at home using the recipe booklet provided. This level of engagement is a testament to the effectiveness of the program in making nutrition education both fun and practical.

The positive impact of the nom! Schools visit was further highlighted by feedback from one of the classroom teachers who attended the sessions. The teacher reported that some of her students, who had never cooked before, were inspired to cook at home for themselves or their families after attending the nom! session. She also noted that the program encouraged students to make healthier food choices, become more involved in cooking at home, and prefer cooking over having takeaway.

It’s safe to say the nom! Schools visit to Tom Price Primary School and Paraburdoo Primary School was a huge success. The program not only provided valuable nutrition education to the students but also created a sense of community involvement and enthusiasm for healthy eating. The positive feedback and expressions of interest for future visits showed the importance and impact of the nom! Schools program in promoting healthy eating among students and their families.

We look forward to continuing our efforts to educate and inspire more students across Western Australia.

This visit was made possible thanks to our generous partners Mineral Resources and PLS Australia

Through times of change, growth and challenge she has always shown up with a can-do attitude and deep belief in our mission.

At the start of the COVID pandemic Miranda was even seconded to another role – distributing hampers to Aboriginal Controlled Community Organisations in regional and remote Western Australia!

From her first day on the job, Miranda has gone above and beyond in her role of School Breakfast Coordinator, before being promoted to Manager of the program. Under her watch, our School Breakfast Program is the second largest in the country now reaching over 28,000 kids per week in over 550 schools.

17 years is more than just time – it’s hundreds of early starts, thousands of tasks well done, and countless moments of kindness and care. We are so proud to celebrate this milestone with Miranda and so grateful for the incredible contribution she has made to our team and the community we serve.

Here’s a short Q&A with Miranda:

Q: What first inspired you to join the organisation 17 years ago? And what kept you motivated all this time? Can you describe what the organisation was like when you started?

A: Funnily enough, being able to afford food was the biggest attraction. I’d recently graduated from uni and was working double-shifts in a call centre to afford rent and food. The job market was terrible at that stage. The School Breakfast Program project officer role sounded interesting and – best of all – was an 18-month fixed term, full time contract! I rocked up to the interview straight from a particularly rough night shift and honestly don’t recall most of what I said, but it must have been good.

Q: What are some of the most significant milestones you’ve witnessed or been part of?

A: My top 5 are:

  • Clocking up 17 years in one (first real post-uni) job
  • Working in two Foodbank Perth buildings
  • Experiencing three CEOs (Kate is by far the most fun)
  • Celebrating four School Breakfast Program milestones (10, 15, 20 & 25 years)
  • Delivering on five SBP government contracts

Countless jokes about the Program being my first and favourite child. I won’t dispute this, just don’t tell my real children!!!

Q: What’s one thing you wish people outside the organisation understood better about the work you do?

A: Many people assume the worst about the parents of children that go to school hungry – they’re lazy, neglectful and selfishly spend food money on other things. Honestly, it’s more complicated than that. Many parents choose between keeping a roof over the kid’s heads and buying enough food – try half-paying the mortgage/rent and see how that goes.

Some homes have food available, but kids elect not to eat at home – lack of safety, no adult supervision, or being dropped to school at 7am so both parents can get to work. Lots of energy is wasted on debating the whys and assigning blame, rather than just meeting people’s needs in a non-judgemental and supportive manner.

Q: How has working here changed you personally or shaped your view of the world?

A: I love everything about the role: supporting children to learn and thrive, being part of this amazing Foodbank family, and the flexibility to have not only the job of my dreams, but for the job to be flexible to the needs of my family and something that they are very proud of.
