Your support is helping hungry children thrive at school
Each morning, children across South Australia and the Northern Territory walk into their classrooms carrying more than just backpacks. Thanks to your support, many now arrive smiling, reassured that there will be nourishment waiting for them at school.
As rising costs continue to place pressure on families, schools are playing an increasingly important role as places of care and stability. Through Foodbank SA & NT’s School Breakfast and School Lunch Programs, children begin their day nourished, supported, and ready to learn.
In 2025 alone, Foodbank SA & NT delivered more than 1.16 million breakfasts and 157,000 lunches to students across South Australia and the Northern Territory. This 19% increase on the previous year reflects not only growing demand, but the strength of partnerships between schools, communities, and supporters like you.
Behind these numbers are children whose school days are brighter because of your kindness. A healthy breakfast or lunch helps students settle into class, focus on learning, and join in with confidence. It allows children to feel included and cared for, rather than worried or left out.
Schools regularly tell us how transformative this support is. For many, Foodbank’s school meal programs provide a reliable foundation that school budgets alone cannot sustain.
At Christie Downs Primary School, Student Wellbeing Leader Jo explains that Foodbank’s support is a valued part of the school day. “Foodbank’s support allows us to make sure every child can start the day ready to learn. It removes pressure from families and helps children feel safe and supported at school.”
At Elizabeth Vale Primary School, Community Connections Leader Nina shares that the openness of the program is key to its success. “Everyone is welcome. Because it’s part of the normal school routine, children can access food without stigma, and that makes a real difference to their confidence and wellbeing.”
That sense of dignity sits at the heart of Foodbank’s school programs. By welcoming all students, food becomes something shared and school remains a place of belonging.
The impact of these meals goes far beyond nutrition. They create routine, calm, and connection. They give teachers and wellbeing staff the chance to gently check in with students and support them early. Over time, this consistency helps children build confidence, resilience, and a stronger connection to learning.
As Jo reflects, “For many students, these meals help them arrive at school ready to connect, participate, and thrive.”
Because of your support, thousands of children are starting their school day with one less worry and one more reason to feel hopeful.
With your continued support, even more children can start the school day nourished and ready to learn, carrying books and dreams into the classroom, not the burden of hunger.
