Waste not
want not

According to Recycle Right, approximately 312kg per person of food is wasted every year in Australia which equates to one in five bags of groceries and at a cost of more than $2000 a year.

Producing food involves water usage, electricity, transport and much more. When we throw away food, we don’t only discard it, but we also waste all the resources used to make that food.

How you can help to reduce your own food waste

Here are some simple tips to help reduce food waste, be more environmentally friendly and save money:

Adopt a healthier and more sustainable diet by choosing foods from the five core food groups and cut back on processed and packaged foods.

Budget and buy only what is needed. Plan your meals and write a shopping list. This great habit saves you time, money and makes it easy to organise dinner. Head to the Superhero Foods HQ for a handy meal planner.

Where possible, choose the ‘ugly’ fruit and vegetables, pick from the ‘odd bunch’ area at your local shop. The odd-shaped fruit and veg are just as healthy and tasty, and once chopped or grated, you can’t tell the difference. You can also freeze your blackened bananas and other fruits for smoothies or sauces – think home-made apple sauce.

Supporting local food producers is beneficial too. By buying local produce, you support family farmers and small businesses in your community and you also help fight pollution by reducing food miles.

Store food wisely – rotate the food in your fridge, freezer and pantry so the older items are at the front and are used first. Have a look at the ‘use-by date’ and ‘best before date’ as the latter is still safe to eat after the suggested date. Cook or freeze those that are close to the use-by date.

Keeping health front of mind, eat smart. Freeze left-overs or have them for lunch the day after. Remember that you can always ask for a doggy bag to take left overs home after eating out to eat the next day.

Don’t forget that you can put your food waste to use, instead of throwing away your food scraps, compost them or give them to friends who have chickens, ducks or a worm farm.

Last but certainly not least, donate food that would otherwise be wasted. For example, ask family members, friends and neighbours if they would like to share your food or donate to food relief organisations like our very own.

Megan’s Story – How our Mobile Foodbank Helped Feed her Family

Simon’s story

The skyrocketing cost of living is pushing many people into poverty.

Even those on fulltime incomes are struggling, while things are even tougher for people on government support payments.

No more hunger pains

Simon hasn’t always struggled or been out of work – despite looking. Simon is a chef by trade and is currently on Jobseekers allowance even though his serious health battle should see him resting and focusing on his strength.

Living from pay to pay is a struggle, let alone the stress of being aware that you have no safety net should anything go wrong. A higher-than-expected bill, a blown car tire, or worse, a new medical diagnosis which brings with it worry, stress and more medical expenses.

That’s exactly what happened to Simon. His roommate, Steve – who he affectionately refers to as his best mate and soulmate – was acutely unwell and was taken to hospital for eight days. Simon contributed what little money he had to help Steve, but both were left with no money, no food and without any pay in sight for the next week.

When Steve got out of hospital, a week into both of their fortnightly pay cycles, Simon assumed the carer role and took it upon himself to do what he could to get them through the really tough spot they were in.

After cycling to his nearest Mobile Foodbank, more than seven kilometres away, he was met with the smiling faces of our volunteers who made sure that he and Steve’s food needs were taken care of.

Even with all the up and downs that have been thrown at Simon, he says he feels fortunate and blessed to be able to access the Mobile Foodbank. With a grateful smile on his face, Simon says that our volunteers took great care of him and ensured he didn’t leave empty handed, even when his paperwork wasn’t complete. “I find a great deal of comfort in the fact that I can turn to Foodbank… to help out when I really do need it.”

Struggling with an already very tight budget means that budgeting opportunities in the weekly grocery shop are limited.

Having access to the Mobile Foodbank has made a huge difference to Simon. For him it’s the difference between eating three meals a day to eating only one meal a day for four days straight. For Simon, that was his reality.

Speaking of what Foodbank WA means to him, Simon says the reality of having access to the Mobile service is “a matter of not having hunger pains” – a vastly brighter reality.

Food assistance is available to anyone struggling to access or afford food. Phone the Emergency Relief & Food Assistance Hotline on 1800 979 777, Monday to Friday 9.30am – 5.00pm.

Megan’s Story – How our Mobile Foodbank Helped Feed her Family

Find out more
Megan’s Story – How our Mobile Foodbank Helped Feed her Family

Rose’s story

The food budget in households has quickly come to be seen as discretionary spend.

When you have already tried to cut your spending down by buying cheaper cuts of meat or supermarket brand products only and have really gotten as creative as possible with mealtimes and still have no room to move, you realise you are in trouble and need help.

No different to a grocery store

At Foodbank WA, our number of customers continues to grow. Demand has almost doubled across the state. Both a new socio-demographic and the traditionally vulnerable are needing our assistance.

Household bills are all up, gas, electricity, petrol and the list goes on. A recent Finder survey found that the average grocery bill in Perth has gone up from $129 in February 2022 to $179 in February 2023 which is an increase of $50 just for food and groceries.

Centrelink payments went up earlier this year ranging from $20 a fortnight up to $40 a fortnight depending on the type of benefit an individual is on. Those working may be lucky enough to receive a small pay increase, many won’t. No matter how you look at it, the number of people struggling is rising and shows no signs of slowing down.

Like so many Western Australians, Rose found that supermarket costs were crippling her and her partner. She is on Centrelink benefits and finds it hard to live from fortnight to fortnight managing the little money she has. Between keeping a roof over her and her partners’ heads and keeping the electricity on, there are weeks where food becomes a very distant last consideration.

Recently Rose and her partner received their electricity bill and pooled their money to pay for it leaving them with no food.

Thankfully, Rose’s Dad was able to help with $20 so she could visit her local Mobile Foodbank and do her food shop for the week.

The big smile on Rose’s face shows her gratitude, “This place is a godsend. It really is,“

“I’m eating better because you get everything you need in the packs,” Rose says of the variety of food on offer. The frozen meals in particular are a favourite because of their ease, good value for money proportionally and the fact that they are full, balanced meals with protein, carbs and vegetables. Overall, she says the Mobile Foodbank has proven to be a lovely experience, and not overwhelming as many people may think.

You don’t feel any different that you would just going to a grocery store. “There’s nothing strange about it. I don’t feel embarrassed. I feel great.“

Food Assistance is available to anyone struggling to access or afford food. If you or anyone you know if finding it tough to make ends meet, phone the Emergency Relief & Food Assistance Hotline 1800 979 777, Monday to Friday 9.00am – 5.00pm.

MEDIA RELEASE

2 February 2023

Foodbank WA Welcomes Alana King as Ambassador

Foodbank WA is excited to announce that Australian Cricketer and Perth Scorchers player Alana King has joined Foodbank WA as an ambassador.

Alana King took the cricket world by storm during the summer of 2021-22, making her international debut in all three formats. She has already played a key part in Australia winning the Ashes, the ICC Women’s World Cup, and gold at the Commonwealth Games.

Alana’s passion and drive to succeed in the highly competitive world of National and International sport makes her the perfect fit in an ambassadorial role for Foodbank WA, where she can, through her professional and personal channels, drive change by highlighting the reality of food insecurity and the impact Foodbank WA makes in the community.

“We are thrilled to have someone of Alana’s calibre represent Foodbank WA. Alana has worked tirelessly to improve her game to get to where she is in the highly competitive world of sport, and we know she will bring the same vibrancy, dedication and passion to her new role as Foodbank WA ambassador.” said Kate O’Hara, Foodbank WA CEO.

“Alana works incredibly hard to perform at her peak, keep improving and to get the best out of herself, she pushes the boundaries and keeps true to her values – which is where we align with Alana. By inspiring young Australians, Alana demonstrates the same values that underpin our purpose to Feed. Educate. Advocate. These values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration and responsibility are at the core of everything we do, and all that Alana demonstrates too. We are very excited to work alongside her moving forward.” Kate O’Hara continued.

Alana King, Foodbank WA ambassador, said “I am excited to join Foodbank WA as an ambassador. I am passionate about giving back to the community and I have been impressed by the work that Foodbank WA do. When I toured their Perth warehouse I was surprised by how large it is and the sheer amount of food that they distribute.”

“The work that they do through the Mobile Foodbanks to ensure they can reach more people as well as their School Breakfast Program feeding 22,500 children a week is really impressive. I feel that their values strongly align with mine and I look forward to helping promote the important work that they do”.

The increasing cost of living coupled with the after effects of COVID continues to create an increasing surge in demand at Foodbank WA. Before COVID, the organisation would assist about 200 people a day, some days this is now over 900. The challenge for Foodbank WA is to now ensure the supply chain continues to meet a growing demand.

It is vital to raise awareness of Foodbank WA so those who are struggling to put food on the table know help is available.

About Foodbank WA

Hello, we’re Foodbank WA. We believe everyone should have access to good quality food. We’re here for the everyday Western Australians who are going without. And it’s our job to help change that.

We provide food and groceries to those who struggle to afford them. We also deliver nutrition education to promote healthy eating and advocate on behalf of people that experience hunger and food insecurity.

We are here to support Western Australians in times of need. We do this through

  • Providing 6.7 million meals last financial year to those who were doing it tough
  • Distributing food and groceries through 448 frontline charities
  • Providing breakfast and fruit to 492 schools feeding 21,000 children weekly
  • Delivering education programs for over 6,200 children, adults and parents

We work with farmers, wholesalers, manufactures and retailers who donate and redirect surplus product to us. This also plays a vital role in tackling food waste and positively contributes to climate change by reducing CO2 emissions arising from landfill.

Our vision is to end hunger in Western Australia by 2030. Our purpose is to Feed. Educate. Advocate.

Northern Star Resources Supporting Foodbank Kalgoorlie in New Four Year Partnership

Northern Star Resources Limited have committed to becoming Branch Partner for Foodbank Kalgoorlie for the next four years with the aim of increasing the local community’s access to food assistance.

Thanks to Northern Star Resources, the Kalgoorlie branch has been able to take valuable steps forward within the Goldfields & Esperance region, gaining a better understanding of the nature and need of food relief required, the barriers and complexities of the area, and to gain a better understanding the transient Indigenous communities which create a fluctuating population; to further the capability in meeting the demand for food relief within the region.

A key component of the new four year partnership is active participation in the Summer Response Strategy in Kalgoorlie, an initiative which is a social model involving organisations working together to address complex social issues, in liaison with the Goldfields Development Commission. This will see a portion of funds be dedicated to specific requirements such as food, water and hygiene packs, ensuring that the community have access to items that meet immediate needs.

Nutrition education is another important component that the partnership will help Foodbank Kalgoorlie to address, with many agencies in the region already enquiring about the nutrition education programs on offer. Foodbank Kalgoorlie will now be in a position to provide education which covers topics such as budgeting, nutritional content of foods and cooking meals which are all necessary in understanding a healthier and more affordable way of living.

The partnership is in addition to the ongoing support of Northern Star Resources which has allowed Foodbank Kalgoorlie to introduce a Mobile Foodbank service for those who struggle to find transport to visit the branch, whether be due to the increase in cost of petrol, language barriers, social stigma, or cultural intricacies; and now an expansion is planned for an increase of up to eight locations within three years. Four of these will be based locally and the others will be outreach communities.

Foodbank WA CEO, Kate O’Hara said, “Our relationship with Northern Star Resources Limited has assisted us in better understanding the unique challenges, and opportunities, within the Goldfields region for food relief delivery. Foodbank Kalgoorlie is the best positioned organisation within the food relief sector to overcome the barriers and complexities of the region and the various groups who depend on our service, with support from Northern Star Resources Limited. Collaboration is a key driver to our success.”

Foodbank Kalgoorlie provides more than 235,000 meals each year to those most in need in the area. This is made possible through their connection with 28 agency partners including Salvation Army, Centrecare, Goldfields Women’s Refuge, Bega, Anglicare WA and Yorgum Aboriginal Corporation, along with 34 schools to distribute nutritious food to individuals, families, and children across the region.

With increased meals provided by the branch, more mobile foodbank locations in Kalgoorlie and specific nutrition education, Foodbank Kalgoorlie will be best placed to deliver valuable food relief in the region for the foreseeable future.

Megan’s Story – How our Mobile Foodbank Helped Feed her Family

Tia’s story

Centrelink pays Tia $776 a fortnight and her rent is $740. Leaving her just $26 for food.

Tia thought she was lucky. She had three wonderful young sons, worked in her dream job, and had just secured a loan for a new car. Finally, things seemed to be going her way. The last few years had been hard, dealing with being a working single parent, a relationship breakdown and health concerns always in the back of her mind.

Could You Write a Grocery List for $26 a Fortnight?

Many years ago Tia found out that she had a lesion in the front and central part of the brain, causing irregular brain patterns. With symptoms like epilepsy, it’s been hard to forget a diagnosis like this, especially as the sole caregiver to her children.

Past medical issues aside, Tia had been working as a flight attendant with both SkyWest and Virgin Australia for eight years, which to her wasn’t just a job, but a lifestyle she loved.

It was on a fateful day in 2015 when Tia was asked to lift heavy cabin baggage by her captain, which should never have come on the flight, that she herniated and ruptured a disc in her spine in Kalgoorlie. To make matters worse, as the flight neared Perth, the plane suddenly dropped into an air pocket which further aggravated Tia’s injury.

Being a single mum with young children at home, she really felt she didn’t want to make a big deal of the incident at the time for fear of losing out on additional shifts.

Her life is very different now. It was Tia’s birthday recently and she had carrots and potatoes for dinner. Her children send her money every now and then because they’re slightly older now but she says that while she is so grateful to them, she feels as though she has failed them. She says the relentless fortnightly struggle to make ends meet affects her mental wellbeing.

Due to the nature of her injury, Tia had to apply for a disability pension because she had to have multiple surgeries, was pumped with a huge amount of painkillers, then rehabilitation. As a result, she was advised to seek compensation, “You get treated very badly, like a criminal” Tia said.

The compensation eventually came through, $50,000, which initially sounds like a large sum of money but considering she had just lost her income and was a single parent who had to keep a household going, it was not a lot at all.

At this point Tia had been through multiple surgeries, and had been put on so much medication that she felt like a zombie, when she asked the doctors for another surgery to insert a device called a spinal cord stimulation in her back which has electrodes that go up her spinal fluid and send pulses which change the way the brain interprets the feeling of pain and turns it into a tingle, meaning she would come off the heavy medication, she couldn’t get the operation in the public system. This meant that the money that she got as compensation went straight into funding that operation.

The blows continued to come. As she was unable to work, she contacted the car dealer she purchased her new car from to return it, realising that she still owed $42,000 on the car loan because of the interest, knew she was in a really tough position and after getting some free financial advice she had to declare herself bankrupt.

Tia has applied for countless jobs but because she is not as mobile as she once was, she gets let go soon after being hired even after declaring her condition.

Since then, Tia has been unable to secure disability payments from Centrelink as the letters her doctors write to Centrelink about her condition aren’t satisfactory to them but she can’t afford to see another specialist to have another letter drafted about her condition, for which there is no further treatment available, due to the cost of a specialist consultation. The waitlist for Sir Charles Gardiner is years long because of COVID-related delays. Centrelink pays her $776 a fortnight and her rent is $740.

Tia’s $26 a fortnight usually goes towards making sure her service dog, and other furry friend don’t go without, before she looks after herself. Her service dog is essential for Tia’s safety, because while the lesion on her brain hasn’t grown for years now, she frequently falls down and has passed out in the middle of the street or alone in her home.

Tia is new to Foodbank WA and thinks that because of soaring petrol prices, she will only be able to afford to come out once a fortnight but is grateful for the small wins. “It’s just it’s been a lifesaver to come to a place like this. I just appreciate it so much, it’s been a saviour,” Tia says of coming to visit us.

Tia says that she is a strong woman, against all odds, she is always going stand up and find a way to keep going, be thankful for the small mercies and not take anything for granted.

Megan’s Story – How our Mobile Foodbank Helped Feed her Family

Maggie’s
volunteer story

Maggie has become a very familiar face here at Foodbank Perth since the early days of COVID pandemic.

Hearing of our volunteering plight during COVID and wanting to give back, Maggie who is retired, initially started helping out in the Community Kitchen with Chef Grant.

Maggie said that she stared volunteering at Foodbank WA because the organisation’s values resonated with her own, and because of that fact that food insecurity is a largely hidden crisis and she wanted to give back.

Maggie says that she doesn’t have any expectations when she comes in for a day of volunteering but always leaves feeling very fulfilled. “Hearing about different peoples’ challenges and stories really surprise me. Its amazing to see how customers respond when they are given a little time are heard. When they feel that their situation is understood and they aren’t judged. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to be nice to someone who needs it.”

A typical day of volunteering for Maggie varies – she’s out of the kitchen now that the corporate volunteers are back – and includes anything from making up new referral cards for customers to working at the front counter helping customers and listening to their stories.

Outside of volunteering, Maggie has four grandkids which keep her busy and entertained at various sporting activities. She also loves yoga, walking along the coast and has recently started up SpeedFit!

Thanks for everything that you do for us and our customers, Maggie!

You too can volunteer just like these amazing people. Join us and start making a difference.

Gillian’s
volunteer story

Gillian is one of Foodbank WA’s volunteers and can be found in the Perth Branch each Wednesday.

For Gillian, working together with a group of like-minded volunteers is really rewarding and also a great place to meet new and lovely people. “I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping people, it works both ways. Doing a few hours’ a week is beneficial to everyone concerned.”

“If I can help someone who is less fortunate I think it’s very rewarding. I like to help people in need. Life in general can be very tough for a lot of people, especially now everything’s getting so expensive.”

Gillian’s giving spirit doesn’t stop there, outside of Foodbank WA she is also involved with the Lion’s Club of Gosnells who are very involved with helping their local community.

Nick’s
volunteer story

Nick was introduced to Foodbank WA by his very good friend Ivan in January 2021 and has volunteered with us two days a week since then which he really enjoys.

Immediately meeting some wonderful people with a similar outlook of wanting to help those that are more unfortunate really drew Nick in and has given him a sense of being worthwhile.

“When I see all the food hampers being made for distribution to various areas that are in need, and knowing I helped to prepare them, really gives me a buzz.”

“Being able to help others is why I do what I do”.

A typical day varies, anything from stacking shelves for the shop floor and interacting with the shoppers, to sorting stock in the cool room is all in a satisfying days’ work.

Outside of volunteering Nick enjoys gardening, fishing and football training with Year 9’s. There’s nothing he can’t do!

You too can volunteer just like these amazing people. Join us and start making a difference.
