Meet the women fighting hunger with Foodbank

International Women's Day at Foodbank NSW & ACT

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is Inspire Inclusion. At Foodbank NSW & ACT, we are committed to women’s inclusion and creating a sense of belonging and empowerment for everyone. Together, we strive to shape a supportive and inclusive  world for women.

This International Women’s Day, we’re highlighting just some of the women fighting hunger with Foodbank.

Meet Samantha Prescott, Chief Operating Officer at Foodbank NSW & ACT.

Sam

Samantha has been working at Foodbank NSW & ACT for seven years and throughout that time, she has been a driving force for positive change in communities across the state and territory.

At Foodbank, we Inspire Inclusion by ensuring women feel valued and empowered. That means making sure that women not only have a seat at the table, but also that their voices are being heard.

Meaningful inclusion is the key to long-term growth.”

Meet Caroline, Secretary and Treasurer at Carevan Blacktown, Foodbank Community Partner.

Sam

Carevan Blacktown is a local charity providing food, homeware and clothing to community members in need. They host a weekly meal service, collecting fresh fruit, vegetables and pantry staples from our Foodbank warehouse to distribute to their community.

Caroline shared the challenges she sees women face in her community. They range from language and cultural barriers to transport challenges, as well as the stigma of asking for food support.

Women are excellent communicators and networkers which serves our charity very well. We are run on the goodwill, dedication, and hard work of our volunteer team, which is in the majority, made up of women.

Meet Rebecca White, Supply Chain Manager at Foodbank NSW & ACT.

Sam

Rebecca’s role includes overseeing operations and supply chain at Foodbank NSW & ACT, managing our 6,000 sqm warehouse, coordinating logistics and ensuring food safety.

Despite the disparities in pay and recognition for women in the supply chain industry and being told by numerous recruiters over her career that “female Supply Chain/Operations Managers are rare”, Rebecca has risen above such barriers.

I love that Foodbank NSW & ACT has an equal number of female to male workers on site.

Rebecca’s experience in manufacturing has made her an invaluable team member. Throughout all the challenges she has faced, Rebecca has persevered, breaking down stereotypes and paving the way for future generations of women in supply chain management.

Meet La E’e, HR Driver and Stephanie Lemaire, Forklift Driver at Foodbank NSW & ACT.

Sam

Stephanie has typically worked in male-dominated industries, often being the only female driver. But that has never stopped her!

Working at Foodbank NSW & ACT, Stephanie says she has never been treated differently or had any assumptions made based on her gender and ability to perform her role.

I wish more women would give it a go and break the stereotype!

Sam

La began her Foodbank NSW & ACT journey driving our smaller vans to transport food and groceries but today is now one of our key HR Drivers, driving our Mitsubishi 10 pallet Pantech.

Today there are women driving double trailers, which is amazing!”

Meet Lyn Doull and Christine Uluirewa, Foodbank NSW & ACT Volunteers.

Sam

Lyn has been a dedicated volunteer at Foodbank NSW & ACT for the last four years. What keeps her coming back is the welcoming atmosphere and the chance to make a difference beyond herself. Her days are busy, stocking shelves for the Community Partners they support. But what she loves most is meeting people and hearing their stories.

I look forward to my volunteer days and love seeing people of all ages and genders helping. For me, volunteering isn’t just a task; it’s a source of joy and fulfillment.”

Sam

Christine joined Foodbank NSW & ACT a few months ago and is already a key member of our volunteer team. Volunteering at Foodbank is not just a way to give back but also a source of pride for her. A memorable experience for Christine was volunteering at the Foodbank-supported Koori Knockout event. She embraced the opportunity, enjoying every moment of meeting new people and supporting the community.

Reflecting on her journey, Christine is struck by Foodbank’s impact in reducing food waste, something she witnessed firsthand in Fiji.

I love that we make a difference in society – knowing we’re helping people in need who don’t have the resources.

CEQ and Foodbank Queensland announce strategic partnership to combat hunger in Far North Queensland

Remote store operator Community Enterprise Queensland (CEQ) and Foodbank Queensland (FBQ) have partnered to tackle food insecurity on Cape York Peninsula and in the Torres Strait.

The joint Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) solidifies the commitment of both organisations to collaborate in achieving the shared goal of increasing food security and reducing hunger in the region.

The first MoU initiative launched is the School Breakfast Program, which started in Term 1 this year and involves 14 remote Far North Queensland (FNQ) remote schools.

The program provides breakfast to remote school students, aligning with CEQ’s Nutrition and Wellbeing Strategy 2023-2027 and Board commitment to support initiatives to improve nutrition and wellbeing in the communities it serves.

Key objectives outlined in the MoU include:

  • Collaboration: Both CEQ and FBQ will work together in identifying opportunities to collaborate and address food insecurity in FNQ.
  • Recognition of food insecurity: Undertake joint advocacy to address needs of the remote communities, being access to healthy, nutritious food.
  • Promotion of partnership and project: Increase awareness of CEQ and FBQ’s initiatives within the communities and promote to remote families.

CEQ Chief Executive Officer Michael Dykes said the collaboration between CEQ and FBQ marked a significant step towards creating sustainable solutions in the region, with a shared commitment to alleviate hunger and promote food security.

“The MoU is an exciting announcement and further reaffirms CEQ’s aim to support healthier, more sustainable communities,” he said.

“We are excited about the collaborative potential that this partnership brings, with the School Breakfast Program the first joint initiative with Foodbank Queensland, with many more to come.

“Through our ‘Good Pasin'(give back) program we cover the cost of freight from Cairns for the food provided by Foodbank Queensland, ensuring that nutritious breakfast products reach schools and communities throughout FNQ.

“This aligns seamlessly with our Board’s broader mission to support wellbeing, health, and nutrition, and educate future generations, in the regions we serve.”

Jess Watkinson, Chief Executive Officer of Foodbank Queensland, is excited to be working with CEQ to work towards addressing food insecurity in some remote communities.

“Foodbank Queensland is honoured to join forces with CEQ in our shared commitment to address hunger and improve nutrition in Far North Queensland,” she said.

“This strategic partnership allows us to leverage our strengths and resources to make a significant impact on the lives of children and young people, working towards a future where no one goes hungry.

“The positive impact of School Breakfast Programs on school attendance, and improved learning outcomes are well known, as well as promoting healthy eating habits to students.”

Foodbank sources record volume of food and groceries in 2023

16 February 2024 – Today, Foodbank Australia revealed it sourced a record 51 million kilograms of food and groceries in 2023, the equivalent of 92 million meals, as the cost-of-living crisis pushed demand for food relief to record highs across the country.

The Foodbank Hunger Report 2023 confirmed food insecurity was experienced in 3.7 million households last year, more than all the households in Sydney and Melbourne combined. This is an increase of 383,000 households from the same time in 2022 and meant that Foodbanks across the country had to source more food and grocery items than ever before.

The main driver of food insecurity is the cost-of-living crisis, causing more Australians to be anxious about putting food on the table with 77 percent of food insecure households experiencing it for the first time in the past year.

Foodbank Australia CEO, Brianna Casey explains that food insecurity is now affecting more Australians than ever before.

“It’s touching groups previously unaffected: young professionals and mid to high-income earners are among those being forced to make sacrifices at the dinner table.

“In any other industry, reaching a volume milestone is cause for celebration. At Foodbank, needing to source 92 million meals is a deeply concerning signal of extreme hardship across our communities, and proof positive of the need for the Federal Government to deliver immediate and significant cost of living relief, including improved funding for the food relief sector to respond to ever-growing demand for food relief in communities we’ve never seen it before.”

Partnering for purpose

Whilst the worsening state of food insecurity in Australia paints a dire picture, it is the generosity and commitment of the Australian food and grocery industry, as well as corporate Australia, that allows Foodbank to support those in need at such an incredible scale.

“We couldn’t do what we do best at Foodbank without the generosity and ingenuity of our partners across the agriculture, production, manufacturing and transportations industries,” said Ms Casey.

Donations of ambient, chilled, fresh food and private label products and personal and household care items are all welcome. By redistributing otherwise wasted products—they may be out of specification, close to expiry, deleted product, surplus or damaged—Foodbank is able feed Australians that would otherwise go without.

Foodbank works with farmers, wholesalers, manufacturers, and retailers who donate food and grocery items and redirect surplus stock so that they can be distributed through Foodbank’s charity network and outlets to those who need it most.

The national food relief sector’s pre-budget submission, which calls for a significant increase in investment for food relief, can be found here.

5 top tips to keep your produce fresh for longer

Top tips to keep your fruit and veg fresh for longer

Did you know Australia sends 7.6 million tonnes of household and commercial food waste to landfills every year?

Food waste creates more emissions than the entire aviation industry! The good news is we can all make a big difference – not to mention save ourselves money and time.

Follow our 5 top tips to keep your fruit and vegetables fresh for longer.

1. Store your bananas and onions separately

There are certain fruits and vegetables like bananas, apples, onions, garlic and potatoes that emit a gas called ethylene that speeds the ripening process of other produce. Try storing these foods separately to extend their life and the life of your other fruit and vegetables.

2. Move ripe fruit to the fridge

Some fruits like peaches, mangoes and avocados are best left out on the kitchen bench so they can ripen. This can sometimes take a couple of days, but after they have ripened, they can quickly spoil. Avoid this by moving your ripe fruit to the fridge to slow the ripening – giving you a few extra days to enjoy your produce.

3. Keep your berries in jars

Give your berries a rinse and let them dry completely on a clean tea towel before storing them in clean jars in the fridge. Your berries must be completely dry before you move them into your jars as any moisture will speed the ripening process. This can take some time but is an easy process and is well worth it for delicious berries that last weeks!

4. Use a towel to keep your salad greens fresh

Keep your salad greens crisp and fresh by gently wrapping them in a clean tea towel and storing them in airtight storage containers in the fridge. Avoid packing your greens together too tightly, as that will cause them to bruise and spoil faster.

5. Freeze!

One of the best ways to hit pause on food spoilage is to freeze your ripe produce. This is perfectly suited to fruit and vegetables like bananas, diced celery, onions, carrots and capsicums, berries, and greens like spinach and kale. But remember – not everything freezes well so be sure to check before throwing it in the freezer.

There is enough food produced in the world to feed everyone, but the sad reality is that millions of people are still going hungry every day. That’s why, at Foodbank NSW & ACT, we’re committed to reducing food waste to get more food to people who need it most.

Al’s volunteer story

“I’d come here every day if I could”

Al isn’t your average volunteer. By day, he’s a warehouse whizz, zipping through the aisles of Foodbank Perth as he packs hampers with precision. By night, he’s Al the musician.

For the past 18 months, Al has been a constant presence in our Perth warehouse. For three days each week, he is working hard to ensure our Mobile Foodbank is always stocked with the latest hampers.

Al saw volunteering as a chance to hone his work skills while lending a helping hand to those in need. And trust us, he’s a master packer. Those perfectly stacked beverage packs, the meticulously arranged snack bags, and the breakfast hampers overflowing with goodness – all bear the unmistakable stamp of Al’s care.

But it’s not just about the packing. Al’s passion for helping others shines through in his every interaction. He believes that if you’re lucky enough to be in a position to give back, why wouldn’t you?

Al’s journey with us started with a simple desire – to improve his work skills. But what he discovered was so much more. He found a community where he could contribute his time and talents to make a real difference in the lives of those struggling.

With his human Tetris skills and his big heart, Al is making the world a brighter place, one hamper at a time.

Kurt’s
volunteer story

“I hate to see waste and when you see what is wasted, it’s heartbreaking.”

Every year, 7.6 million tonnes of perfectly good food ends up in landfills. But thanks to heroes like Kurt Papp, countless mouths are fed instead. Kurt dedicates his time to rescuing fresh produce at Perth Markets.

Kurt’s been volunteering for 13 years in fact and has become a vital link in our food rescue chain.

Kurt understands that life can take an unexpected turn better than most. When he fell ill, he needed to turn to income support. So what did he do in return? He stepped up to volunteer and contribute to his community. Kurt made his way to Foodbank and he hasn’t looked back since.

Two years at Welshpool warmed him up, and then the Perth Markets beckoned. Now, he supports our supply chain operations on the ground, coordinating fresh fruit and vegetable deliveries to ensure they get to the people who need them most.

Whether it’s too many veggies or a slightly bruised pallet, Kurt refuses to let good stuff go to waste. He and the Foodbank crew make sure that locally-grown produce finds its way to grateful tummies instead of the landfill.

Now, Kurt isn’t just a face at the markets; he’s practically a legend. Forklift drivers, wholesalers – everyone knows him. Need apples? Kurt knows exactly who to call and in no time, you’ll have a pallet of juicy fruit with a bonus veggie surprise.

So, the next time you munch on a crisp apple or savour some fresh veggies, give a mental high-five to Kurt Papp – the guy making sure good food doesn’t go to waste.

Chobani and Woolworths

Partnering with Foodbank to increase access to fresh produce for Aussies in need

In February 2024, Chobani teamed up with Foodbank and Woolworths to launch two new 907g tubs of Strawberry and Passion Fruit yogurt, with every tub sold donating 6 meals to Aussies in need. This is the second campaign of this type, with the inaugural campaign in 2022 providing the equivalent of 552,000 meals.

With a commitment to donate 100% of profits, the limited edition product was exclusive to Woolworths and helped provide the equivalent of 1.56 million meals.

The funds raised from the campaign will go towards the purchasing and distribution of fruit and vegetables across the country.

Tim Browne, GM ESG & General Counsel Chobani, reflects on the collaborative nature of Chobani’s relationship with Foodbank. “As a food and drinks manufacturer we have a responsibility to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food. However, we recognise that understanding the specific needs of communities requires expertise – that’s where Foodbank comes in. Our partnership with Foodbank is more than just a collaboration; it’s a friendship built on a shared mission to use food as a force for good. We are always looking for new and innovative ways to support Foodbank and make a tangible impact. Through our close collaboration, Foodbank has highlighted the pressing need for fresh produce, and we’ve tailored this initiative to address this directly.”

Driven to use its platforms, resources and influence to improve food access, Chobani hopes that this campaign will also encourage other brands to make their own positive impact on individuals and local communities. “Collective corporate efforts have the power to ignite positive impact on individuals and communities experiencing hunger,” said Browne.

Community Partner Story Authentic Church’s Community Care

If you found yourself in a position needing to choose between paying a bill or buying food, what would you do? Where would you turn?

Thankfully, Foodbank Member Charities, like Authentic Church’s Community Care, are here to help Queenslanders in need in the Logan region.

For the last four years, Melanie, Director of Community Care has put her heart and soul into the running of the Authentic Community Care Food Outlet. The Food Outlet provides low-cost and no-cost groceries and other essentials. These groceries are collected from the Foodbank Queensland Distribution Centre and other food rescue organisations.

The first three months of food hampers are free for those struggling to make ends meet. After this time, they are available for $25. They also offer a 10% discount on all low-cost groceries for the first six months. This program was created to help people end the cycle of disadvantage, as Melanie explained,

“The idea is it’s a hand-up, not a handout We want people to keep their humility. While we can give out all the hampers that we want, we’re not actually breaking the cycle of helping people…Let’s get you on your feet.”

The Food Outlet is more than the physical items offered, it offers the intangible benefit of community, hope, and connection. Melanie’s genuine care for helping those in need doesn’t go unnoticed by users of the program.

“I’ll never ever forget a man turned up and it was just before Christmas and he said, “I’ve lost my job, we’ve got no money, we’re trying to get Centrelink”. So, we loaded their boot up, and this grown man just began to cry.”

Knowing the impact Melanie and her incredible team of 20 volunteers are making daily is a driving force behind Community Care. This connection and community offering is also available through the onsite café. The café operates as a space for community members to connect over a coffee and a bite to eat. As Melanie explained,

“Our cafe means there’s always someone you can have a conversation with. It is a connection to the community. We’re really big on community. That’s the heart and soul behind our cafe.”

Any funds made from the low-cost groceries, the op shop, and the café are all put back into the community. Melanie explained that a local student had recently been accepted to play Rugby down in Sydney, while her mother could pay for her flights, she was unable to afford her own. This is where Authentic Community Care chipped in to assist this local family. Under the umbrella of Community Care, the op shop also operates to support local families and individuals.

“There are agencies that reach out to us, and they’ll have a family that’s just gone into care and grandma’s just taken on the kids and they haven’t got clothes, they’ve come with nothing. And I’m like, “Yep, we can do two sets of clothes for everybody just to get them safe and started.” We don’t charge for that.”

So, if you were to ever find yourself in the position of needing assistance, it’s comforting to know that Foodbank Member Charities like Authentic Community Care exist. They exist not only for those who find themselves in desperate need but for anyone, “I don’t care if you’re driving a Mercedes. Looks are deceiving, so many people that have those cars are actually struggling to make ends meet” – Melanie.

With the rising cost of living and interest rate increases, many are just one bill away from skipping a meal or going an entire day without eating. But you can help. If you are in a position to help Foodbank Queensland provide more food across the state to support Queenslanders in need, please consider joining the fight against hunger as a regular giver.

If you are a Queensland charity, Foodbank Queensland membership is a great way to support your food relief projects, offering your organisation a reliable source of food and groceries all year round.

Food Relief sector calls for urgent action on funding

Wednesday 24 January, 2024

Ahead of the Prime Minister’s caucus meeting on the cost-of-living crisis, Australia’s food relief sector has called for an urgent and dramatic increase in Federal funding to help respond to unprecedented levels of demand for food relief.

The Foodbank Hunger Report 2023 highlighted that the cost of living is crippling households across the country and there is compelling evidence that the situation has deteriorated in recent months. Despite this, base funding for Foodbank Australia, SecondBite and OzHarvest remains at an embarrassingly low $1.3m per year – combined.

Brianna Casey, CEO of Foodbank Australia, says,

“The Prime Minister is committed to introducing cost of living relief. One of the most obvious solutions that would provide immediate relief to those already struggling would be to bolster support for the food relief sector. This would be a targeted and sensible investment capable of ensuring fresh fruit and vegetables, protein and pantry staples are available to community members most affected by the current crisis.”

Daniel Moorfield, CEO of SecondBite echoed this saying:

“While we are dealing with a cost-of-living crisis that knows no bounds, we’re also preparing for and responding to flash flooding, yet another cyclone record temperatures sweeping in from the west. There is only so much we can do without more meaningful support from the Federal Government.”

According to Ronni Kahn AO, CEO and Founder of OzHarvest:

“Despite more people than ever before needing food relief due to the unrelenting strain on household budgets, the level of funding for the national food relief sector remains woefully inadequate. We are seeing unprecedented demand with long queues every day at our free supermarket, and many of the charities we support say they could take double the amount of food. Government action is long overdue.”

Through its pre-budget submission, the food relief sector has made the case for $50m per annum to be provided to the three organisations to help meet community need for food relief. This comprises $10m for additional capacity, $20m from each round of the Disaster Ready Fund and $20m for emergency food relief following a crisis or natural disaster.

What happens when the Interest Rate goes up?

Grandma and granddaughter sitting on couch

The Foodbank Hunger Report 2023, revealed 35 percent of all mortgage holders and half of all renters experienced food insecurity in the past 12 months.

On the first Tuesday of every month, like many Australians across the country, we at Foodbank wait bated breath to see if the Reserve Bank of Australia will increase the Cash Rate or not. Why? Every time the decision is made to increase the Cash Rate, we see an increase in the number of people searching for food relief. This isn’t coincidence. It’s cause and effect.

With every Cash Rate or interest rate rise, we know the number of clicks on our Find Food button goes up.

The Find Food button takes you to Food Relief providers in your local community. It is often the first step for many who are struggling to put food on the table.

We have been tracking the hits to this very vital button against the monthly Cash Rate announcements since August 2022, and it’s plain to see there is a scary correlation of Australians sourcing food relief when that rate rise is announced.

Food is the pressure valve for many household budgets. It is often the first item people cut back on when trying to make ends meet, with 94 percent of those hurting coped through shifting spend on food and groceries.

If you or someone you know needs food relief, please don’t delay and hit that Find Food button.
