Amanda’s story

At Foodbank WA, we often say that our greatest strength lies in our people

“Working at Foodbank WA?” Amanda leans in, her eyes brimming with excitement, “It’s incredibly rewarding. It’s honestly the best job I’ve ever had.” But it’s not just about the warm fuzzies; it’s the satisfaction of making a real difference.

From setbacks to success

Amanda’s journey to us is far from conventional. For 30 years, she was a skilled hairdresser, bringing joy to her community through her craft. But she wanted to do more, especially after some time in prison. “This is different,” she says, “it’s giving back to my community in a productive way. It’s good for my soul.”

Emerging from prison, she faced the challenge of finding her feet once again. And to make things even more difficult, she’d just battled cancer. Tough? You bet. But so is Amanda.

Reflecting on her journey, Amanda candidly shares her initial fears of re-entering the workforce after her time in prison;

“When I was in prison, I struggled to think of how I was going get a job and what I was going to do. With the cancer, I had no hair at that point and didn’t feel confident to return to hairdressing. I wanted to find a job that would accept me and I thought “who’s going to do that?” I didn’t want them to look at me differently, and Foodbank hasn’t.”

This isn’t just a job; it’s a mission. Amanda’s role began in May and she admits to starting with little knowledge of warehousing. “I knew nothing about anything,” she laughs. But she has embraced the learning curve with enthusiasm.

“I think something was just calling me to work here,” she shares with a grin. And that something is the sense of purpose that fuels her every day. “Who cares if I’m tired?” she quips, “Every day, the work I’m doing means more families can put food on their tables that night and that’s all that matters.”

Amanda doesn’t see this as just a job, it’s a profound commitment. “When I was diagnosed, I thought to myself that if this was it, I haven’t done what I wanted to do in this world and I want to give back so much more than I have. I felt that for such a long time I was helping the wrong people and I want to help the right people, the people who really need it, and this is the right place to do it.”

“At Foodbank WA, we often say that our greatest strength lies in our people,” shared Kate O’Hara, CEO of Foodbank WA. “Amanda’s journey perfectly illustrates this. Her unwavering commitment to our cause, despite facing significant personal challenges, is a shining example of what it means to be part of our Foodbank family. We’re honoured to have her with us.”

Amanda’s story is a poignant reminder that working for a non-profit organisation like Foodbank is not just a job; it’s a purpose, a community, and the opportunity to make a real impact, even when life throws its curveballs. It’s about making a meaningful difference, even when faced with personal challenges.

A Truck Load Of Support Grows Access To Food Donations In Queensland

Queensland’s frontline charities will soon have access to hundreds of tonnes of additional fruit and vegetables to provide to needy families thanks to a fitted out truck donated to Foodbank Queensland.

The truck has been donated by Alliance Airlines to help increase the rescue of food at risk of going to waste and fast track its distribution to more than 300 frontline charities and 300 school breakfast programs throughout the state. It is the fifth truck in the Foodbank Queensland fleet and will grow its capacity to collect food for frontline charities by 20 per cent.

The need for extra food is so strong that the refrigerated truck will be on the road up to seven hours each day and is expected to travel about 800 kilometres every week carrying 28 pallets of donated food per trip.

The generous support from Alliance Airlines will change lives right across the State.

“Every hour Foodbank Queensland provides 3,000 meals to people in need in Queensland. This supports 150,000 Queenslanders each week, but sadly the demand still outweighs supply,” said Jess Watkinson CEO Foodbank Queensland.

“We have a big state and a lot of agriculture, but sadly, sometimes the crops just don’t get to market. With this truck we will have the capacity to rescue a lot of that produce and put it in the hands of the frontline charities that can distribute it, and that makes a huge difference.”

Through Foodbank Queensland’s work with Queensland farmers and hundreds of food and grocery companies, its trucks are used to also rescue produce and good quality packaged and tinned foods and deliver them where they can be distributed.

Scott McMillan, Managing Director of Alliance Airlines, said the airline travels to remote areas of Australia and sees firsthand the need for assistance by families in regional and remote areas, as well as capital cities.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Foodbank Queensland, as the state’s largest and most trusted hunger relief charity,” says Scott McMillan.

“We look forward to supporting Foodbank Queensland in the fight against hunger and to help make an impact to the lives of many Queenslanders.”

Lyndhurst Secondary College

Lyndhurst Secondary College is a busy secondary college with 722 students, located in the suburb of Cranbourne in the outer southeast suburbs of Melbourne.

The school focuses on empowering students for learning and life. With this in mind, when they were offered the opportunity to host the School Breakfast Clubs Program Cooking Classes, they grabbed that opportunity with confidence.

The College invited students and their primary carers to attend the four week program, once a week. The Foodbank Victoria team came along with the equipment and ingredients, and the rest was up to the participants to get cooking.

The food is great

One major benefit that the Lyndhurst Secondary College students found was learning how to cook simple meals, like pizza from scratch and rice paper rolls.

Often these students don’t cook at home or like to try new foods. These classes taught them basic cooking skills for life, and when they made the food, they wanted to eat the food too. Trying new foods was good in the end!

It’s the social life

Schools report that there is so much more to these Cooking Classes than the fabulous cooking skills the kids learn. Often the social side of things shines through.

One of the participants brought their Primary Carer along, their grandparent. The grandparent was thrilled to have an opportunity to spend some bonding time with her grandchild, and to get some help with cooking in the evenings at home too.

Another student came along with their Primary Carer who was a Government Mentor. The mentor liked the benefit of spending time with their student, and also getting to know the school staff better.

Food hampers were essential

Each week the groups attending receive a full box of food, valued at $55 per box. These recipe boxes are filled with fresh ingredients (fruit, vegetables and herbs) as well as culturally diverse dry goods such as rice, olive oil, spices, noodles, nori and pita breads.

Participants are encouraged to use the food to cook the recipes that they are learning in the classes.

The families at Lyndhurst Secondary College found these hampers an incentive to attend the classes each week, and they also found that they provided enormous relief to their food shopping bills at the supermarkets.

They would use the food to try the recipes, but also to add to their normal cooking ideas too.

Testimonials from Lyndhurst Secondary College

“The impact of this program on our school community is so much more than feeding families and ensuring everyone has a full belly at school and at home.

This program has enabled us to establish and foster positive working partnerships between school and home. It has enabled students and their parents and carers to find common interests through cooking and instilling a culture where time between family members is shared and valued.

For us as a college, one of the greatest benefits was being able to see students continue their learning alongside their parent/carer/significant adult and to hear that this continues at home with new routines of cooking and enjoying a meal together.

Undoubtedly, this has also benefitted student engagement with school, connection to school and parent/carer involvement and trust with our college. We believe the work Foodbank has done with our college will have long term positive impact on the students and families involved both academically and socially.”

Eloise Haynes | Lyndhurst Secondary College Principal

“I like cooking and I enjoyed eating the food after because it was yum. The staff there were very nice.

We got to bring home big boxes of food to cook at home. This meant that we were able to cook different meals together and eat together as a family.

I would 100% go back and do this program again.”

DoorDash and Melbourne United

Slam dunking the season away with 41,000 meals donated to Foodbank

During the 2022/2023 NBL season, DoorDash and Melbourne United (MU) partnered with Foodbank to donate meals for struggling Victorians.

Across Melbourne United’s 28 home and away games, DoorDash committed to donating $250 to Foodbank Victoria for every slam dunk made by an MU player, equating to a total of 500 meals. Closing the door on another incredible season, MU scored a total of 82 dunks, resulting in 41,000 meals delivered to Foodbank via DoorDash for those doing it tough.

DoorDash General Manager in Australia and New Zealand Rebecca Burrows said it was important to DoorDash to be part of this cause. “We are so thrilled to have established this formidable partnership with Melbourne United and Foodbank Victoria, which draws on our brand’s mission to empower local communities and create meaningful connections with the people we serve. Being able to deliver 41,000 meals to Australians living with food insecurity through such a wonderful sporting event fills us with such pleasure.”

Melbourne United CEO Nick Truelson voiced how proud he was to see his team so enthusiastically coming on board to support Foodbank while doing something they love.“ Being part of this initiative has been both eye-opening and rewarding for the entire Melbourne United team. We had 8 different players contribute to the tally, ranging from our tallest dunker (7ft) to our shortest (6ft), so it truly was a whole team effort. We are feeling immensely grateful to have been given the opportunity to give back to a cause so vital to the welfare of our community.”

Congratulations to our Volunteer Team of the Year 2023!

2023 Regional Volunteer Team of the Year Warehouse Team with Foodbank NSW & ACT with Edmond Atalla MP

We are thrilled to share that our Foodbank NSW & ACT Warehouse Volunteer Team have been awarded Outer Western Sydney Volunteer Team of the Year.

Our incredible team of volunteers are the key ingredient to enabling us to provide over 65,000 meals per day to families across the state and territory. From sorting and labelling items to stocking shelves and packing food orders, we rely heavily on our community who generously give their time to help us get food to the people who need it most.

Thank you to our wonderful Warehouse Volunteer Team and to The Centre For Volunteering for recognising their hard work.

We’re always on the lookout for more community members to volunteer with us Monday to Friday. Click here to learn more.

A Breakfast Club teaching all the skills

Kilmore Primary School has 507 students and serves around 50 students breakfast four mornings a week at their School Breakfast Clubs Program. Richie and Mez run a tight ship, serving up steaming hot spaghetti, buttery toast, crunchy cereal, fresh fruit and more.

The Kilmore Primary School Breakfast Clubs Program has evolved over time. Richie listens to feedback from the students and makes changes for the better. One example is the way the food is served. The students requested to serve their own breakfast, which once initiated has had many positive side effects.

The students are spooning their own spaghetti and spreading vegemite on their buttered toast. The kids love the sense of responsibility that comes with this and there has been less waste as kids only take as much as they will eat.

FBV Kilmore Primary School 2023

FBV Kilmore Primary School 2023

Student leaders in the group are given responsibility overseeing the food distribution, which is providing them with valuable organisational and communication skills. An unexpected benefit is that the students are also washing up their own dishes. The school has a bucket with warm water and a brush on a table, where the dishes are rinsed and placed into another bucket. A student helper stays at the table to make sure that the process is followed, and then puts the dishes into the dishwasher for a final clean.

While we were visiting the school, two students came into the Breakfast Club to ask if they could help. The Helper positions and badges are sought after. These positions are provided to students who have displayed good behaviour, and they are also used as an incentive for good behaviour.

Another change that has been introduced is the move from many small tables to sit at, to two long tables. This change encouraged different age groups to sit with each other and mingle, with great outcomes.

A garden that delivers the goods

Mez is the fearless leader over the Kilmore Primary School Kitchen Garden. She used her green thumb to turn a patch of wild weeds into a productive vege patch providing food for the school hampers and much more. The kids are rewarded for good behaviour with a visit to the garden to pick peas and passionfruit. There were several watermelons that many kids had their eyes on!

A few lucky students are provided the opportunity to be the Garden Ambassadors. This is a sought after position, which is seen as a real reward for good behaviour and leadership in the school.

FBV Kilmore Primary School 2023

Testimonials from Kilmore Primary School

“Our Breakfast Club program has made a huge contribution to promoting the wellbeing and engagement of our students. In addition to providing students with a nutritious meal to ensure that they are fuelled for learning, it has also fostered social interaction and built friendships among students from different classes, enhancing their sense of belonging and community.”

Neil O’Sullivan | Principal

“The KPS Breakfast Club has gone from strength to strength. The staff who run the program are passionate about supporting all students and developing their independence and lifelong skills. The program has had a ripple effect across the school. The students at KPS start the day ready to learn as a result of having access to breakfast as well as providing healthy food choices throughout the day. The program then reaches the broader school community through our Random Acts of Kindness hampers. Thank you to Foodbank for their ongoing support of our school community.”

Julie Smith | Assistant Principal

Mitch’s Story

“I don’t know how I’ll get through the next few months…” – Mitch*, single father of three.

Despite never having the support and resources needed, Mitch created a happy home for his three children.  When adversity recently returned, it put food out of reach for his family.

Mitch’s childhood was marked by family breakdowns. Raised by his father who remarried many times, Mitch moved from town to town and was placed in foster care at 12. Life was looking up when he married and had three children. After his relationship broke down, Mitch became the primary carer for his children. With Mitch and his children all on the autism spectrum, life is often overwhelming and stressful. Unable to work due to his disability, they struggle on a small pension.

Finding money to support them is hard, I don’t want my children to ever miss out.” – Mitch.

Mitch is a loving father who is worried about providing regular, healthy meals amidst soaring living costs.

When we haven’t had enough to eat, it weighs me down. I have to pull together whatever meals I can, like beans on toast.” – Mitch

School lunches are very stressful, paying for all the fruit and snacks. It’s also the meat and vegetables that have become too expensive… the things that are still cheap are the junk foods.” – Mitch

Generous supporters like you changed everything for Mitch. He found help at a Foodbank Member Charity where he receives nutritious meals for his family.  “They do dinners like spaghetti, macaroni, vegetarian, and it puts me at ease. I can focus on being a good Dad.” – Mitch

Mitch now volunteers at the Foodbank Member Charity, helping others access food relief. Having autism has created barriers to employment, but volunteering makes him feel loved, like he’s making a difference. “They make me feel special.” – Mitch

Without Foodbank’s Member Charity, Mitch doesn’t know where he would be. Your support has been a vital lifeline, providing nourishment to families like Mitch’s who are facing hunger and hardship in our Queensland communities.

Joe’s
volunteer story

I know I’m one of the lucky ones to be able to volunteer and help others.

There are few people who are more passionate about volunteering with us than Joe. A warehouse favourite, Joe was recently recognised during National Volunteer Week for his incredible five-year contribution to Foodbank and we simply don’t know what we’d do without him.

Five years ago, Joe was looking for opportunities to make a difference in his community when he came across Foodbank and knew he had to help. Now, you’ll find him on our shop floor every week, ensuring product is always ready for our shoppers.

When he’s not unpacking and sorting deliveries, Joe is ensuring our shelves are fully stocked and offering a friendly face to all our visitors on the shop floor.

“I love volunteering here. The staff and volunteers are so warm and friendly, and it’s fulfilling getting to help someone else.”

Community Partner Story Urban Angels Community Kitchen

I always say we create all this food. But really the food is just a tool for us to create a sense of community and a sense of belonging for all of our service users as well as our volunteers. It’s so important to them, each and every one of them.” – Birgit

From a young age, Birgit has understood how food has the power to connect people during difficult times. After losing her mother at 9, Birgit’s father – who had little experience with cooking – struggled to provide meals for his 5 children.  Birgit says she will never forget the sad look on her father’s face, as he pushed around tinned sausages on his plate.

To help her family, Birgit stepped up and began cooking for her father and her four siblings. From her cooking, she learnt that food makes people happy and offers an opportunity for connection. Just like it did with her family. This is something that has become a common thread throughout Birgit’s life.

“I understood very early on the importance of tasty food to make people happy”.Birgit

After seeing an increased need for food assistance in the local community, Birgit began cooking in her own kitchen. Soon, other mothers began to help too. As word spread and need increased, they quickly outgrew the space. Turning to her children’s school for help, a once per term meal preparation group began in the school kitchen. The volunteers began cooking around 50 meals per session but unexpectantly were quickly cooking an exceptional 450 meals per session.

IFYS, a local family and youth support service, recognised the remarkable efforts of Birgit, who not only provided food but also fostered a sense of community among her service users. As a result, IFYS brought Birgit’s program into their services in 2016 and so Urban Angels was officially born.

Urban Angels is now one of Foodbank Queensland’s more than 300 Member Charities providing vital food relief to local struggling families and individuals. In their Maroochydore, purpose-built, commercial kitchen, generously donated by a selfless supporter, Birgit and the rotating 160 volunteers cook hundreds of ready-to-eat meals every day. These meals support vulnerable residents at the IFYS Housing Pathways Programs, Caravan Park and Aged Care Home residents, schools, and individuals across the Sunshine Coast. But in the last year, the need for their services has more than doubled.

“The increase in demand is just unbelievable. I’d say it must be 70%. We’re seeing people who have never had to reach out to a charity before and are so ashamed to have to.”– Birgit

As more and more individuals look for support, the Urban Angels team are working to create a safe and inclusive environment where no stigma or embarrassment is attached in reaching out to their services.

“There was a young woman who came in here with her mother, just last week. She was so embarrassed. She started crying when she came here, it was her first time. And I said, ’You know what, there are so many people who need help, that everybody needs help at some stage in their lives.’” – Birgit

Connecting with local individuals and families in need is an important pillar of the program that Urban Angels works hard to achieve. Together with the volunteers, Birgit continues to create a sense of community through the connection of food, encouraging those volunteers who deliver food, to stop, connect, and talk to those in the community most in need.

“What we are doing here is creating community for the people that we visit.” – Birgit

With the increasing cost-of-living affecting so many in her community, Birgit said she is grateful for Foodbank’s support.

“I don’t know where the world would be without Foodbank and other food donation charities. I just think the world would stop without organisations like Foodbank rescuing food. It is so important because there’s so much waste. I just think it’s critical.”- Birgit

Without your generous support of Foodbank, charities like Urban Angels would not be able to operate and feed those most in need. Birgit’s story is an example of how your donations can positively impact local communities throughout Queensland.

If you are in a position to help Foodbank Queensland provide more food across the state to support Queenslanders in need, please consider joining the fight against hunger as a regular giver

If you are a Queensland charity, Foodbank Queensland membership is a great way to support your food relief projects, offering your organisation a reliable source of food and groceries all year round.

Always ready to respond

We’re making sure we have emergency relief hampers ready for distribution

In times of a natural disaster like bushfires, floods or cyclones, worrying about where your next meal will come from is the last thing anyone should have to do. That’s why we’re always prepared to distribute emergency relief hampers to those who need them most.

Behind every emergency relief hamper is a finely orchestrated logistics process that ensures they are swiftly packed, loaded onto trucks, and distributed to those in need. We owe it all to our dedicated volunteers and fantastic distribution and logistics partners, who work together to make it happen.

We truly believe in the power of collaboration – we couldn’t do what we do without it – so in times of crisis, we work with Foodbank Australia through our national partnership to source key emergency relief products. This allows us to tap into a national network of large-scale suppliers, who send their products from the Eastern States for redistribution. As soon as the products are ready to go, they embark on their epic journey across the Nullarbor to reach our Perth warehouse, where we prepare them for delivery to communities in need.

Every step of the way, we ensure that our products are meticulously unpacked, weighed, and prepared for redistribution. We want to make sure that each and every hamper is filled with care and thought, providing the nourishment and support that our communities need during tough times.

Once the hampers are ready to go, it’s time for our distribution and logistics partners to step in. They play a crucial role in ensuring that the hampers reach as close as possible to the areas where the need is greatest. Sometimes conventional transportation just isn’t feasible, but that doesn’t deter us. We collaborate with local emergency services and community resource centres, even using helicopters or boats, if necessary, to ensure that the hampers reach those who need them the most.

The impact of an emergency hamper relief is profound. It’s more than just food in a box – it’s a symbol of hope and solidarity. With every hamper is a heartfelt promise to stand with our communities in their time of need and bring nourishment, comfort and hope.

It’s true that we can never predict what natural disaster might be just around the corner, but one thing is for sure – we’ll be ready for whatever comes our way. With a certain amount of pre-packed hampers stockpiled and warehoused, we’re here to respond swiftly to any emergency.
