SUNNY QUEEN IS ‘EGG-STREMELY’ PROUD TO HAVE PARTNERED WITH FOODBANK AND MAJOR RETAILERS TO HELP RAISE FUNDS TO FEED AUSSIES IN NEED

28 April 2023

Australia’s favourite smiley-faced eggs and Foodbank Australia are proof of the power of an ‘egg-ceptional’ partnership, their joint ‘Purple Egg Pack’ campaign having raised enough money in six months to provide 184,738 meals to families in need.

The product cracked the market last June with a percentage of proceeds from every carton sold at supermarket major outlets across Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales being donated towards Foodbank.

“We are egg-stremely proud to have created a Purple Foodbank Egg Carton for a very special purpose,” said Isabelle Dench, Head of Marketing of Sunny Queen Australia.

“To have provided over 184,000 meals for a cause that really matters in the first six months of the campaign is so incredible. We’re egg-cited to continue the partnership and provide even more meals by the end of the year,” she said.

The funds raised were handed over to the Foodbank team at a morning tea today, Friday, April 28.

“We are so grateful for our partnership with Sunny Queen who have supported Foodbank since 2018,” said Foodbank Australia CEO Brianna Casey.

“I have loved seeing the purple Sunny Queen Egg cartons in my local supermarket and this result is truly amazing and will make such a different to the lives of many doing it tough right now.”

Woolworths and Foodbank partner with suppliers to help provide up to 1 million meals for Australians facing food insecurity.

Wednesday, 26 April 2023: A new campaign supporting one of Australia’s largest providers of food relief, Foodbank, has launched in Woolworths supermarkets.

From 26 April 2023 until 16 May 2023, donations from customers and brands of participating products including Arnott’s, Sanitarium, Dolmio, Vetta, SPC, Pauls and Kraft Heinz will help Foodbank provide meals to Australians in need, with a goal of raising enough funds to provide 1 million meals.

Customers will be able to donate to Foodbank during the first two weeks of the campaign by rounding up their shop in store, or can choose to donate their Rewards dollars directly to Foodbank via the Everyday Rewards app.

Foodbank is facing increased demand for support, with its latest Foodbank Hunger Report 2022 revealing over 2 million households across Australia have experienced food insecurity in the last twelve months. The day-to-day reality of food insecurity they’re seeing differs greatly between households, and on a typical day there are over 306,000 households in Australia receiving assistance from food relief organisations.

Brianna Casey, Foodbank Australia CEO, said:

“We are seeing more and more Australians reaching out for help. These are people with jobs, double incomes, mortgages who are just struggling, like many of us with the cost of living.

“Foodbank provides food relief to more than 1 million Australians a month and, thanks to Woolworths, its generous customers and these wonderful brands participating in this campaign, we will ensure we support as many of those in need as we can.”

Woolworths has partnered with Foodbank for more than 20 years. Throughout this time, over 46 million meals have been given to people in need from the resources and donations provided by Woolworths, as well as the generous donations of Woolworths customers. In 2022 alone, Woolworths donated the equivalent of more than 3.7 million meals, 212,000kg of essential grocery items and more than $1.7 million which went to sourcing essential food and grocery relief.

Woolworths Supermarkets Managing Director, Natalie Davis, said:

“We know there are an increasing number of Australians facing food insecurity at the moment. Foodbank continues to support these communities with compassion everyday, and we hope the support of this campaign can help them put even more meals on tables heading into winter.

“At Woolworths, we’re proud to continue supporting Foodbank as one of Australia’s largest providers of food relief. Over the years we’ve seen communities rally together during challenging times, and a little good can add up and have a huge impact on the lives of thousands. Through our partnership, and together with the generosity of both our customers and suppliers, we can all contribute to making a difference.”

Park Towers community pantry feeding hundreds each week

About 1200 people call the Park Towers public housing in South Melbourne home. While the numbers may fluctuate, you can be certain that the majority of occupants are struggling to make ends meet on any given day.

Troy, a resident of the Towers, had a plan to open a community pantry in the base of the units, that all residents of the Towers could have access to.

Fast forward 2.5 years to now, and Troy’s plan is fully operational and helping feed about 450-500 folks each week, with no questions asked. Foodbank Victoria provides 90% of the food to help feed the residents.

Park Towers resident Troy in community pantry

Troy told us he had noticed a sharp increase in the number of people accessing the pantry and he was concerned that it was only going to get worse before it got better.

He hoped that residents, who were often suffering mental health issues, drug addiction, social awkwardness, and race and religion barriers, received a little respite through the pantry at a time when things are so tough.

Rose’s story

The food budget in households has quickly come to be seen as discretionary spend.

When you have already tried to cut your spending down by buying cheaper cuts of meat or supermarket brand products only and have really gotten as creative as possible with mealtimes and still have no room to move, you realise you are in trouble and need help.

No different to a grocery store

At Foodbank WA, our number of customers continues to grow. Demand has almost doubled across the state. Both a new socio-demographic and the traditionally vulnerable are needing our assistance.

Household bills are all up, gas, electricity, petrol and the list goes on. A recent Finder survey found that the average grocery bill in Perth has gone up from $129 in February 2022 to $179 in February 2023 which is an increase of $50 just for food and groceries.

Centrelink payments went up earlier this year ranging from $20 a fortnight up to $40 a fortnight depending on the type of benefit an individual is on. Those working may be lucky enough to receive a small pay increase, many won’t. No matter how you look at it, the number of people struggling is rising and shows no signs of slowing down.

Like so many Western Australians, Rose found that supermarket costs were crippling her and her partner. She is on Centrelink benefits and finds it hard to live from fortnight to fortnight managing the little money she has. Between keeping a roof over her and her partners’ heads and keeping the electricity on, there are weeks where food becomes a very distant last consideration.

Recently Rose and her partner received their electricity bill and pooled their money to pay for it leaving them with no food.

Thankfully, Rose’s Dad was able to help with $20 so she could visit her local Mobile Foodbank and do her food shop for the week.

The big smile on Rose’s face shows her gratitude, “This place is a godsend. It really is,“

“I’m eating better because you get everything you need in the packs,” Rose says of the variety of food on offer. The frozen meals in particular are a favourite because of their ease, good value for money proportionally and the fact that they are full, balanced meals with protein, carbs and vegetables. Overall, she says the Mobile Foodbank has proven to be a lovely experience, and not overwhelming as many people may think.

You don’t feel any different that you would just going to a grocery store. “There’s nothing strange about it. I don’t feel embarrassed. I feel great.“

Food Assistance is available to anyone struggling to access or afford food. If you or anyone you know if finding it tough to make ends meet, phone the Emergency Relief & Food Assistance Hotline 1800 979 777, Monday to Friday 9.00am – 5.00pm.

Breakfast Club breaks down barriers

Horsham Primary School is a dual campus P-6 Primary School with a combined enrolment of approximately 440 students, educating those from both Horsham City and the surrounding rural areas.

Student wellbeing is a continued priority for the school, especially as almost 50 per cent of their students are statistically recognised as coming from a disadvantaged background. With this in mind, Horsham Primary School is always searching for programs that assist to prepare students to be ready to learn each day, and this is where the Foodbank School Breakfast Clubs program steps in.

Is That Music in the Air?

Brent White is the Student Wellbeing Coordinator at Horsham Primary School, and as part of this role he is responsible for the School Breakfast Clubs Program. Brent is passionate about making the breakfast accessible to kids that really need a good start to the day. His previous experience with underprivileged communities gave him good insight into stigma associated with providing free food to families. Brent wanted to make the free breakfast approachable and stigma free – so he turned to the Nutbush!

It is easy to find the Horsham Primary School Breakfast Club, because DJ Brent appears every day taking requests. The music is blasting across the school, and it brings the kids in. On any given morning, you will find 50 or 60 kids doing the Macarena, moving to the YMCA, grooving to the Nutbush, or any other dance songs the kids request.

While the music creates a fun environment, its real agenda is achieved by breaking down the stigma involved with kids needing food – especially when the whole school wants to be part of the club.

The Community Grows Tighter

Horsham Primary School uses the Breakfast Club to assist in breaking down not only personal stigma, but also barriers between the local police and school kids by inviting the local police to come along to help at the breakfasts.

“When the students meet our team in person, they are sometimes shocked to know that police are nice and just normal people. Unfortunately, some of these kids have only had negative experiences with the Police, and when they see us dancing with them it really helps to see us as people they can trust not fear”, said Leading Senior Constable Linda McLenna from the Wimmera Proactive Policing Unit.

The Proactive Policing Unit attends the breakfast clubs at both campuses, helping to set up the breakfast and serve the kids. The kids love chatting to the team and they have also been caught dancing to the YMCA!

Breaking Down Barriers

The Breakfast Club offers more than nutritional food, it also provides Horsham Primary an avenue to create a safe space for kids who are seeking responsibly in a community setting.  Brent has created the Wellbeing Warriors, who are kids that he felt would benefit from being part of assisting with the program. The Wellbeing Warriors are provided with a “Helper” badge, and they come into school to help make sandwiches for lunches, sort fruit and vegetables and other roles of responsibility. The badges give the kids a sense of belonging too.

The kids feel like they are part of something special. The responsibility provided to the Wellbeing Warriors provides the kids with the feeling of being needed, which they might not always get outside of school sadly,” Brent said.

Parent Testimonial

My name is David.  I am a single father of 3 children who attend the Horsham Primary School and feel so fortunate that the school has the support of Foodbank.

I have experienced many personal events that are still painful, and my children have been sadly exposed to trauma and this has created confusion, financial loss, accommodation, and food insecurity, not to mention trust issues.

However, I know through the support of Foodbank and the staff of the Horsham Primary School that my children will be treated fairly, not judged, fed when we are struggling, so school attendance is there haven and gives me the opportunity to return to work with the hope of re-establishing a life and opportunities for my family.

Having access to the food hampers allows me to feed my children over the weekends and holidays when things are tight and reinforces hope, and once I got over the embarrassment and swallowed my pride accepting support has enabled a positive shift for my children and for myself. I could not be more grateful for the support.

Tutti Frutti, you bewdy!

We know Australia has a food waste problem, right?

One of the ace things about being Foodbank is that we have some friends in high places with big hearts (Peters and Montague – looking at you). They came up with a tangy, sweet way to tackle the waste issue and raise funds for Foodbank.

A delicious sorbet stick made from rescued Aussie plums (that would otherwise have gone into landfill) that goes by the delightful name of Rescue Pops – Plums Up.

Our staff were chilled to bits when they got to sample these plummy little treats.

She’s got the whole world in her hands

Ever wondered how quickly we put your gift to work, and what that means for the incredible people who allow us to share their Foodbank stories with you?

We caught up with multi-talented mum Melita who went through such a tough time last year but has started 2023 with a new job and truckloads of positivity – thanks to you.

With support from you and her local neighbourhood house, Mill House Neighbourhood House, in Maryborough who delivers our food, Melita’s Christmas was “fantastic”.

She took her kids Madison and Luke to the beach for a picnic lunch with plenty of fresh food, sunshine and a classic Aussie treat for dessert: icy poles!

At Christmas, I looked in the cupboard, and there was food there. My car was full of petrol, and it was the first time in a long time that had happened. It gave me such a sense of freedom and relief.

Food has transformed Melita’s life. Giving her the energy to complete a community services course and score a brand new job as a health worker.

She also put her artistic skills to work over summer, painting a striking mural at Mill House for her community to enjoy.

Melita loved your Christmas messages:

“I was absolutely lost for words. These people that didn’t even know me, sending me these beautiful messages? I couldn’t believe it.”

Top ATAR* score for our Home Food Packs

Our School Breakfast Clubs Program, in partnership with the Victorian Government, has delivered 30 million meals to students since day one, but once the bell goes the food challenges won’t stay in the playground.

Too many families don’t have enough food to cover meals for dinners, weekends or holidays.

When families need that extra help, we’re there for them. Our School Breakfast Clubs also provide Home Food Packs every day of the school week.

Students choose food their families will love and take it home discreetly in non-branded, reusable green bags.

Demand for the Home Food Packs is increasing each year, with 6,000 taken up in the lead up to Christmas holidays. So, we’ll be working hard in 2023 to get food to everyone who needs it.

A message from Foodbank Queensland CEO

To all of our valued supporters, I have recently made the difficult decision to step down as CEO after three years at the helm, with my last day being 27 April 2023.

My time as CEO at Foodbank Queensland has been full of wonderful challenges, lots of learnings and many incredible partnerships. Over these past few years, Foodbank Queensland has undertaken a rare cultural and operational transformation. Foodbank continues to go from strength to strength and is a wonderful place to work. There are some exciting elements of strategy coming to fruition for Foodbank Queensland, and with a strong leadership team and our community of Queensland supporters, I believe it will be a joyful role for a new CEO to come into.

I am proud to have been part of such an incredible team working tirelessly and passionately to give food and hope to thousands of Queenslanders in need every week. I will continue working with the team and the Board to ensure a smooth transition to a new leader. As for my next move, after many years as a CEO, I am moving on to pursue my passion areas of executive coaching and Board directorship.

Thank you for your continued generosity commitment to Foodbank. Thanks to your kindness, we can continue feeding Queenslanders in need every day.

– Sara Harrup, Foodbank Queensland CEO

Sara Harrup

A Snapshot of Foodbank Queensland’s Journey Since 2020

The Foodbank team wishes to thank departing CEO Sara Harrup for her leadership. Here’s what we have achieved together since Sara commenced in early 2020.

We increased our impact

  • Feeding Families – 77 million meals created for Queenslanders in need
  • Saving Food – 39 million kgs of food saved from landfill
  • Saving Water – 2,600 Olympic swimming pools of water conserved
  • Saving the Planet – 780,000 petrol tanks worth of emission saved

Metrics from February 2020 to February 2023

We set a new strategic direction

In the last three years, Sara Harrup has worked with the Foodbank Queensland team and the Board to implement many large projects with very disciplined strategy execution. A strategic goal was set to create a sustainable, nutritious, and dignified food and safety net for Queenslanders in need.

Foodbank Queensland Chair Mike Hill said Sara Harrup has successfully transformed Foodbank Queensland’s operations to be even more efficient and effective and is leaving the organisation in a wonderful place with a five-year strategy underway.

image content right
If we reflect on what Foodbank Queensland was like when Sara Harrup arrived and where it is today, Sara’s achievements have been immense and the legacy profound. Sara has guided Foodbank Queensland through considerable change and challenged the status quo, which has required the patience and support of our employees, volunteers, food donors and Member Charities. Sara leaves a proud record knowing that Foodbank Queensland today is a much more capable organisation ready to meet the rising demand for our services, to respond to emergency weather events, and to also prepare us for the implementation of many more necessary projects on the horizon. – Mike Hill, Chair

Forming a strong team to lead Foodbank forward

Sara Harrup built a strong Senior Leadership Team and broader Foodbank team, engaging with experts in their fields and making hard decisions to help us achieve our vision of a Queensland without hunger. The team have brought incredible collective knowledge to the organisation and have really pushed Foodbank Queensland into very contemporary ways of working. Foodbank Queensland Head of People and Culture Jill Mee said Sara Harrup has led and coached the Senior Leadership Team to achieve the extraordinary.

image content right
Sara Harrup draws on the expertise around her to achieve and go beyond the strategic goals set. She makes you better at your job, and personally invests in every person; she pushes, challenges, is always curious and celebrates when we achieve what we set out to . Often what comes out of our achievements is another set of goals because of her drive for continuous improvement. Sara operates from a place of deep empathy, authenticity, and kindness, with an overlay of fairness, justice, and accountability. Sara has transformed Foodbank Queensland in three years, and she has done that by enabling everyone to perform at their very best. – Jill Mee, Head of People and Culture

We welcomed new volunteers

Since early 2020, we have welcomed hundreds of incredible volunteers, building a strong, aligned volunteer team who have contributed significantly to the work of Foodbank Queensland. “Choosing to volunteer for Foodbank Queensland was one of the best decisions I’ve made. The people are lovely, the work is interesting, and it is a great cause. I found it so rewarding that I recently encouraged my husband to consider volunteering as well.” – Louise, Volunteer. “The overwhelming positives that I feel from volunteering at Foodbank are the gratitude and respect that are afforded to all the volunteers. This culture is demonstrated by all levels of management and is obvious to all workers, volunteers and clients.” – Margaret, Volunteer

image content right
Sara has a strong track record of championing volunteering and a deep understanding of the value volunteers bring to an organisation and its culture. Over the last three years as CEO, Sara spearheaded systematic transformation of the volunteer program to align with the values and principles defined in the National Standards for Volunteer Involvement. Under her stewardship, we saw a robust, resilient, integrated, inclusive and values-led volunteer program emerge to support Foodbank Queensland through the ups and downs of COVID-19, the 2022 floods and planned organisational transformation. – Ryan Wright, Strategy and Innovation Lead

We embarked on a digital transformation

Under Sara Harrup’s leadership, Foodbank Queensland has gone from a paper based, person led organisation, to one that has solid processes, information sharing and consistency. The implementation of workforce management software and business management software, as well as the rebuild of our customer relationship management software has created incredible efficiencies at Foodbank Queensland.

image content right
The recent implementation of an online ordering system at Foodbank Queensland has transformed the way we work. Our receivals, dispatch and storage processes have all been digitalised with each food delivery being completed via a radio frequency (RF) scanner. At our Food Distribution Centre, food pallets are now tracked, food pallet bays are location controlled, and we have RF scanners telling our forklift drivers where to go to find and place food items. This has streamlined our processes, enabling us to distribute more food to those in need.  – Nathan Gregory, Operations Manager

We became a culturally safety centric organisation

Sara Harrup has led Foodbank Queensland’s Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) system into a place where we are now at an incredibly high standard consistent with The International Organisation of Standards (ISO). Foodbank Queensland Chief Operating Officer Saul Martinez said Foodbank has developed a robust program for the care and wellbeing of all workplace participants.

image content right
Sara’s uncompromised commitment to offering all staff, volunteers and visitors a safe workplace has resulted in the establishment of a comprehensive suite of integrated policies, procedures, training programs, and whole of organisation discussion forums. This is demonstrated when as part of day-to-day activities, stakeholders actively participate and raise concerns with the confidence that they will be heard and their feedback valued. On multiple occasions, third party auditors and government officials have recognised and commended the high standards of our system and our proactiveness and disposition for continuous improvement. Sara’s leadership has been central to these achievements. – Saul Martinez, Chief Operating Officer

We built new relationships – Thank you to our partners!

Thank you to all our incredible supporters for your continued generosity. In the last three years we have built so many strong partnerships, supporting multilevel relationships with partners including government, corporate partners, philanthropists and people who provide probono support. Each and every partnership has been vital in helping us get more food out the door to Queenslanders who need it most. MinterEllison is one of our partners who has helped Foodbank Queensland evolve:

image content right
It has been energising for us to work alongside Sara Harrup and the team at Foodbank Queensland over the last three years of transformation for the organisation, providing our people with the opportunity to use their legal and technology skills to assist Foodbank Queensland in its journey, even in the face of challenges brought about by floods and the pandemic. We are very grateful that Sara introduced us to Foodbank Queensland and so ably developed and led our partnership – one that is now firmly embedded with us. – Robert Reed OAM, MinterEllison

And thank you to our Member Charities!

Foodbank’s Member Charities play a vital role in the fight against hunger in our state. That’s why they have been at the heart of every decision we have made to ensure we help even more Queenslanders facing hardship. Foodbank Queensland Member Engagement Manager Therese O’Conner said we couldn’t support so many people in need without our wonderful community of Member Charities.

image content right
In the last few years, we have grown to service 350 frontline charities and 300 schools across the state, providing essential food and groceries to support their critical food relief programs. It’s our Member Charities’ tireless work that motivates us, informs us and keeps us striving to be better. Working together, we can give food and hope to thousands of struggling Queenslanders every week. – Therese O’Connor, Member Engagement Manager

The 2022 Queensland floods were some of the worst floods Queensland has seen in modern times – leaving thousands in our community displaced, without electricity and without food or water.

A year ago, we asked for your help with a simple proposition: to get as much food and fresh drinking water as possible to those in need, and you answered the call. Thank you for being there for your community in such a time of need.

Thanks to your generosity, in the last 12 months, enough food was distributed for over 412,000 meals to flood affected communities seeking help. Thank you for the vital role you played in this remarkable feat. Knowing where their next meal is coming from can have such an impact on those dealing with the lasting effects of the floods.

At the time of the floods, we shared stories from some of Foodbank Queensland’s incredible Member Charities, including Victory Church Care Services. You may remember the devastating images of their food relief facility in disarray, where fresh produce was lining the ceiling after flood waters filled the entire building.

Victory Care Services Manager Ray Hill relayed how your support helped, and continues to help, the Gympie community:

Our Victory Care Service in Gympie, which provides food for 120 families every week, went under water in the biggest flood in 120 years. Like many families in the town, we lost everything except our building. The community rallied around us and after a couple of months and a lot of hard work and donations, we were up and running again. Our Victory Care Service was missed and was welcomed back by a grateful community. We thank the community for their support and also Foodbank for their generosity with the supply of food donations, contributing to our ongoing service in the community. I thank all involved.”

This is just one of the hundreds of stories from communities you’ve helped by standing by them during their time of need.

By pitching in and donating to get food to where it was needed most, you gave hope to communities who had lost everything. While the floods can cause devastation in only minutes, hours and days, the road to recovery can take years, with many families still rebuilding what they lost. That’s why, with your support, Foodbank Queensland continues to work hard to support these impacted communities.

Foodbank Queensland is putting your donations to work every day, serving the community now and preparing for a more sustainable future. We truly couldn’t feed so many Queenslanders in need without you.

If you are in a position to help Foodbank Queensland on an ongoing basis to provide more food across the state to support Queenslanders in need, please consider joining the fight against hunger as a regular giver.
