Our Mobile Foodbank has been a welcome and very effective way to get food relief to individuals for who transport can be a barrier. The cost of living, having the transport itself, and lately, the cost of fuel will prevent some people from being able to access our Perth Airport or regional branches

The Mobile Foodbank concept first launched in 2019 with four locations in the Perth metropolitan area.

The first Mobile Foodbank was built by our General Manager Operations Steve Martin who purchased items from Bunnings and fitted out the vehicle. The project was so close to his heart that Steve would go on the early runs to get a feel for the people, their needs and our hamper products. Steve said their gratitude made it satisfying and that the project was so impactful.

Steve has retired so in honour of his amazing work in launching our Mobile Foodbank service we recently christened one of the trucks ‘Steve’.

The Mobile Foodbank service is provided in partnership with our registered charity partners.

Mobile Foodbank and two people wearing foodbank shirt

Mobile Foodbanks now visit 30 locations weekly in the Perth metro area –  from Rockingham in the south to Two Rocks in the north. Our first regional Mobile Foodbank started operating in Denmark from Foodbank Albany on a fortnightly basis, providing hampers to the Community Resource Centre.

Mobile Foodbanks stock a wide variety of hampers, regularly providing meat hampers, dry food hampers which contain pantry staple items such as baked beans, rice, pasta and long life milk (to name a few) and fresh fruit and vegetable hampers at a very low cost. The Mobile Foodbanks also carry a variety of other packs, such a beverage packs (coffee and tea), cleaning packs and every so often we have an excess supply of dairy products such as yoghurt or bread which we give out for free. Each regional Foodbank Branch is now building its Mobile Foodbank network to help overcome the barriers of distance and insecurity in each regional community to accessing essential food relief. With such an increased demand for food relief within WA, the need for our Mobile Foodbank network across the each region is more critical than ever.

Megan’s story

Megan's Story How our Mobile Foodbank Helped Feed her Family

“Your child eats first” – is there any parenting instinct more basic than this one?

It’s not something most give a thought to in their day-to-day, but for Megan and other single parents in our Mobile Foodbank queues, securing your child’s next meal is a constant source of stress.

How our Mobile Foodbank helped Megan feed her family

When Mobile Foodbank first came to Willagee 3 years ago, Megan and her daughter, now 13, had been at rock bottom for quite some time. The story of how they got there is all too familiar. In her 20’s Megan considered herself a successful young adult. She worked as a salesperson for a large international phone safety company, had travelled overseas and was settling down with a partner and beautiful baby daughter.

There were times when my daughter was very young, where I’d just eat her scarps. I’m very good with my money so we’ve never been without, but it would be just very basic food, beans on toast and things like that.

Megan’s hopes for domestic bliss were soon displaced by the daily struggle of dealing with the violence of her partner. They moved homes many times, leaving a trail of broken rentals. Megan was left broken too – by the time she got out of the relationship Megan’s mental health was “just horrible”.

Putting yourself first isn’t what parents do, and Megan’s most urgent need was to make sure her daughter had food. While there were youth services available, Megan found there weren’t many options for the over thirties.

“There was a lot of driving around. Trying to find handouts is embarrassing, it’s kind of soul destroying,” said Megan. “There was nothing readily available. I was being told, ‘you’re too old’, ‘you should have your act together by now’, ‘you should be able to provide for your child.’ It wasn’t like she was going without. Sometimes the school would provide breakfast for her, but I would make sure she was there for that.”

“We would sometimes go to the free meals at the churches, but when my daughter was young I had a lot of social anxiety. If you go to these places they want to talk to you. There are times you just need someone to look at you with compassion and go ‘here have a feed’, you know? You don’t want someone to say ‘how’s your life got to this point?’”

“I became really low in iron at one time, because I wasn’t eating very much and I was very thin. I kind of wish I was a bit thinner now. You can tell Foodbank has been feeding me up!”

When Foodbank WA provides food to a client, it takes away their most urgent need. With kids fed and food in the pantry, they’re able to focus attention on other areas of crisis such as housing, debt, employment, ill-health or fleeing domestic violence.

For Megan, that first visit to Mobile Foodbank nearly four years ago marked an important turning point.

“When I was standing in line, it was a little bit nerve wracking. You feel a bit like ‘oh this is me, this is where I’m at right now.’ But then you get the food parcel and you look through it and you can’t help but smile,” said Megan.

“It was like Christmas. And it still IS like Christmas, every time I get a pack. I love getting it home and opening it up. It’s a nice feeling unwrapping all the goodies.”

Megan shops at our Mobile Foodbank nearly every week, picking up a meat pack, a deli pack and sometimes a fish pack.

“I don’t like taking freebies. I always think ‘oh maybe there’s someone that could do with it more than me,’ but because we do pay for it that takes away the stigma of being charity.”

“What I particularly love about Foodbank WA is it gives us access to meat as it can be expensive. I really love meat and my daughter does too. I believe animal-based proteins are really important for the human brain, especially for a young person, like my daughter’s age,” said Megan.

“And by the way, she’s in an academic extension program, she plays clarinet. She gets As and Bs all the way you know, she’s really, really good. I’ve got lucky somehow!”

Having regular access to affordable food has eased Megan’s mental stresses and brought joy back to the kitchen.

“It’s allowed me to take time out. I’m working again now. I’m volunteering cooking at a church and I’ve got a cleaning job. It really allows you to put yourself first as a parent – to heal – because you know you can afford the basics,” said Megan. “With Foodbank WA, I can provide a higher quality of food to myself and my child, plus I love cooking. It’s a mental health thing – I LOVE cooking!”

Food security can be a fragile thing. When we first met Megan, she was on crutches with a broken ankle. She hadn’t been to visit our Mobile Foodbank for a while as she was unable to drive. Megan says it took away her independence and made a notable impact on her finances and diet.

“I was such a mess. It all went to hell in a handbasket when that happened. It really rattled me,” Megan said.

While it was a major setback for Megan, it was at least only temporary. For too many others food relief is non-existent where they live and plenty of those in crisis don’t have transport to reach our Foodbank Perth.

Our Mobile Foodbanks serve 26 metro locations on a weekly timetable. We’ve added 20 locations to our service in the past two years but we’re a long way short of meeting demand.

Megan is grateful to be one of the luckier ones.

“Oh my gosh through the pandemic Foodbank WA has been an absolute saviour. There was never any time period where you weren’t providing,” she said. “The continuity is so good, the quality’s amazing and the Mobile Foodbank is just so convenient. For me not to have to go out to the airport and still be able to get these great deals, it’s really excellent.”

Victor’s
volunteer story

Foodbank WA volunteer viktor packing hampers

“Seeing happiness in others is a great motivation. I am so happy to contribute. I love to be a part of the team.”

When you walk into the warehouse and see Viktor, you can’t help but smile because he is always smiling!  Viktor volunteers 3-4 days a week and he loves that each day is different; working with different teams but working towards a common goal.

Viktor’s introduction to Foodbank WA was completely by chance when he looked into joining a Men’s Shed. A lady there told Viktor about us and he was here the next morning and the rest is history! Viktor has been with us now for nearly 3 years and in that time he has made such a difference.

Many might not know, but Viktor has a very rich background in stone masonry and sculpture having studied fine art in in his homeland of Hungary. So much so that he even worked for the Hungarian Parliament in a sculpting capacity and on building restorations after WWII. Fast forward a few years and Viktor was back doing what he is passionate about – teaching at the Fremantle Arts Centre. He was also involved with the installation of the water park at Elizabeth Quay.

When he’s not volunteering his time he still creates the occasional stone carving or spends time with his 7 grandkids!

“I never had too much but I was always happy in life and with what I had, and want to give back.”

You too can volunteer just like these amazing people. Join us and start making a difference.

The Golden Girls volunteer story

Golden girls in Foodbank WA Community Kitchen

We’re women who have raised families, cooked and organised kitchens. We turn our hand to anything and none of us like food waste.

As golden, warm and cozy as a roast spud, our very own Golden Girls have made a name for themselves in our Community Kitchen. The Golden Girls are proud of the difference they make in the kitchen, preparing healthy and nutritious meals going directly to those who need them most.

Meal prep in the Community Kitchen is no easy gig. Volunteers work on their feet and need strong arms for stirring commercial sized pots. Yet according to Community Kitchen Manager Grant Longman, the most efficient team is a group that calls themselves the Golden Girls – average age 75.

“They’re Brilliant!” Grant said, “They’re tough as nails and as strong as anyone.” Some of the women keep fit at a seniors’ exercise class, which is how their story started. Rosalyn Tay-Brighton recruited some volunteers at the gym five years ago and they’ve been coming fortnightly ever since.

“We’re women who have raised families, cooked and organised kitchens,” said Ros. “We turn our hand to anything. We’re all physically quite strong and we enjoy the cooking side of it.”

“None of us like food waste and we like the intelligent way that food is rescued from landfill. It’s intelligent use of a material that would otherwise have been abandoned.”

Three of the girls have now passed the 80 mark, but they’re not in any hurry to slow down.

“By Wednesday there’s often been some preparation done. We might either finish the cooking or start the packaging. This could be cooking onions by the tonne, potatoes by the tonne, roast pork by the tonne – it’s macro amounts.”

“Whilst we’re getting organised there’s no talk, because everybody’s working out the system. When we’ve got it going we start to relax and chat. We like to challenge Grant about doing things a slightly different way, which I think he quite enjoys.”

Grant does seem to enjoy a bit of stirring. Ros says he also likes to encourage their competitive side.

“He tells us we do more than anybody else in the kitchen,” said Ros, “We’re speed freaks. He may tell everybody that – but we’ve bought it!”

Briony’s story

Briony's story at Foodbank WA

The day Briony made her first trip to Foodbank WA’s Centre for Hunger relief, is a memory both bitter and sweet. She’d been given a ticket to survival, a fifty dollar voucher. Her rent was paid, the lights were on, she had nappies, baby Marlow had been fed, but Briony had been going without.

There was just enough fuel in the car to take the forty-five minute trip. Briony hated to waste fuel; she’d been saving those miles for emergencies… and this was a matter of survival.

Three years earlier at age thirty, she never could have imagined being without food. She was fit, full of fun and loving her full time job working for an art supply specialist in Subiaco. Everything fell apart the afternoon she got a call from her doctor to come in urgently.

Briony’s breast cancer treatment started right away. She had radical breast surgery, an infuser port put in her heart, chemo and radiation. She had her precious eggs frozen and was told she could never fall pregnant naturally. Briony says the treatment worked by killing everything inside her body so there would be ongoing health issues like osteoporosis and lymphedema.

Emerging from two years of treatment, Briony felt lost and isolated. She’d been out of the social network, friends had moved on to start families and her life experiences weren’t really something others connected with. Keen to restore normality, Briony returned to the job she loved.

“After treatment when your hair grows back it makes everyone else comfortable. It makes them feel satisfied that ‘I’m ok now’, without really having to check in. People don’t understand that you are still enduring a personal struggle post cancer, also there was always this grey cloud of possibility of it returning.”

It was too much, too soon. Briony had a breakdown and hasn’t returned to her job since then.

“It was like a physical, spiritual and emotional step. I had to learn that I couldn’t replicate the person I was before that which is what I was trying to do. There was a long journey of letting go of the person that I was prior to cancer and rebuilding my sense of self from the ground up.”

The following year, Briony went to see her doctor. “I feel like I’m pregnant”, she said. The doctor and several other doctors she saw in the weeks that followed said it wasn’t possible. Early tests didn’t prove anything and when elevated hormone levels did start to show up she was sent for urgent ultrasound for fear the cancer had returned. And there she was, little Marlow, her tiny heart jumping for joy at six weeks of life.

Pregnancy is rarely easy, and for Briony there were traumas and challenges every step of the way, but little Marlow arrived safely. Briony juggled being a new mum with ongoing medical appointments including a hip replacement when her baby was only four months old.

“I was a disabled single mum so there was a real big struggle in my life. Marlow was my purpose. I was obsessed with keeping her alive because I didn’t think I was even going to get her to this earth.”

Briony struggled to pay the bills, and at a time when her own health and nutrition should have been a priority, she was putting herself last. Little Marlow was always fed, Briony hoarded what little food she had and went without.

Help for Briony came via her Mothers group. It was a group for vulnerable mums run by Uniting Care West and everyone was given a list of support services. Taking that step of asking for help was very, very hard, but Briony says by that time it was a matter of survival.

“I was apprehensive at first because it was a struggle to even get there. Once I got in and saw how much I was able to fill up my trolley with it became a relief. A relief of stress and anxiety. So much useful stuff, even a treat like an iced-tea. That food was going to make such a difference for me and last several weeks.” Briony said.

“Foodbank WA provided a safe space for me in a situation where I was vulnerable. Sometimes all it takes is someone filling up your pantry to give you the confidence to keep going.”

Briony is in a better place now, but as a single mum on a disability pension with chronic pain, lymphedema, bulging discs and osteoporosis, life is still hard work. She has regular rehabilitation but always makes time to walk Marlow to school and walk the dog. Without making time for her health Briony says she could be in a wheelchair. From time to time Briony has turned to Foodbank WA, but she still says asking for help isn’t easy.

“People aren’t going to sympathise with you just because you’re a mum trying to feed your kid, they don’t want to hear that you’ve had cancer or that you’re hungry. They don’t want to hear how they have to be responsible for you, they just want to hear what you’re doing to fix it. There was a strong sense of having to figure it out on your own and you judge yourself for it.”

“People don’t choose poverty. We shouldn’t take anything for granted, especially after this past 18 months, there are a lot more people in this situation.”

While Briony is doing a great job of caring for herself now, she will still always be priority #2, because gorgeous Marlow is her everything.

“She’s my shining light. Marlow does show empathy and kindness which was the most important impression I wanted to leave on my child. I want her to stop and notice when people need help. I know it’s part of her fundamental makeup and I’ve never been more proud of anything in my life.”

Beverley’s story

Beverley's story Foodbank WA

“My husband passed away just over a year ago. We were happily married for 55 years.”

Peter cooked delicious meals by himself and by my side. Some of my happiest memories are of us cooking together in the kitchen. Never fancy food but always lots of meat and veggies. His stir frys cannot be replicated, as he took the recipes with him and he was the master of delicious sauces.

Foodbank has helped us through times of financial and family stress and loss. I can still count on a welcome smile and a laugh when I visit, which makes a big difference to my day. Since Foodbank has recently introduced the hampers of dry, frozen, fresh produce, there has been a need for gratitude and creativity. I love the mystery and surprise of bulk packs. With my own ingenuity and some online inspiration I can make meals tasty, nutritious and within my tight budget.

You see I can’t imagine my life without Foodbank. So thank you all for making a big difference. ”

Theresa’s story

Theresa's story at Foodbank WA

“In March of 2005 my world as I knew it shattered.”

“In one phone call I went from a happy mother of two grown children and three treasured grandchildren to having only one child and two grandchildren in hospital, one with life threatening injuries.

My 27 year old daughter Sarah and six year old grandchild William, had not survived the accident. I didn’t think things could get any worse.”

“The next few years saw me crossing the country to be there for my grandchildren. Upon joining the Wanslea Family Services Grandcarers Group in 2008, I was blessed with support, understanding and most importantly, my first Foodbank WA card.”

“The money I saved allowed me a few luxuries for the children like new shoes or the occasional outing.”

“Having relied on Foodbank WA for years before becoming a volunteer, I am well aware of the life altering benefits they provide to financially challenged families. The ability to put healthy, low-priced food on the table allows money to be spent on other, normally affordable necessities.”

Heather and Glenn’s story

Heather and Glenn's story Foodbank WA

“Without Foodbank, our family would starve.”

Heather and Glenn were left with no choice but to rely on Foodbank WA to feed their family.

“We’ve been together for almost four years and have been relying on Foodbank to feed our family. Glenn is on a disability pension and I look after the kids.”

“Rent is so expensive. It’s impossible to keep on top of the bills and we often have nothing left for food. The kids are always hungry and when you haven’t even eaten yet yourself it’s frustrating. Without Foodbank, our family would starve.”

“We volunteer at a local charity in Armadale to try and help others however we can.”
