Do you have a Workplace Giving Program?

Times are tough, and the cost-of-living crisis is pushing many people to crisis point.

Last financial year we provided 9.2 million meals to Western Australians through our charity partners and schools. Sadly, we know that there is still an unmet gap of 30%.

In this new financial year, consider our Workplace Giving Program which provides the opportunity to show your commitment to changing the future of children, individuals and families in our state, one meal at a time.

You decide how much to donate from each pay, and your donations are pre-tax, reducing your taxable income. Double your impact by asking your employer if they match donations.

It is easy to set up through your payroll system, eliminating the need for you to arrange cash or cheques or set up direct debits.

Additionally, workplace giving creates a ripple effect. When employees see their coworkers giving, especially when employers match donations, it builds a culture of compassion and shared purpose. This collective effort can lead to real, lasting change – not just for the charity, but for the communities they support.

“One of the most meaningful ways workplace giving makes a difference is by providing a steady and predictable stream of income. Unlike one-off donations, regular contributions from employees allow us to plan ahead, invest in long-term programs and respond more effectively to ongoing needs in our community.” said Foodbank WA CEO Kate O’Hara.

Your donation will help us to support people like Lisa, who having only moved to Western Australia a few years ago, was excited to start a new chapter of her life. Her kids are grown up and while all of her family live in NSW, Perth offered the sea-change she was after. Everything was working out well for her, she loved the weather and laid-back Perth lifestyle, and she was enjoying her job. Then out of the blue Lisa became unwell in January of 2024.

It quickly became evident that she would be unable to work at all, and Lisa’s work leave evaporated. Her full-time job that was her safety net, was gone in an instant. She hasn’t been able to work since. A terrifying concept – considering the cost-of-living crisis which has been swirling around for years now, and the never-ending bills which land in our inboxes and mailboxes like clockwork, only to be more expensive than the last.

“I think that Foodbank is the difference between eating and not eating. Some weeks, I don’t have money for food, and this is where I come because I can’t afford the supermarkets. Sometimes you can’t get absolutely all of your shopping there, but it can make a big difference to supplement what you do have to buy at the supermarket. Some weeks, without Foodbank, I wouldn’t be eating at all.”

Every dollar makes a big difference. Your generous support ensures we are there when we are needed the most.

Consistency is key

The cost-of-living crisis has ravaged Western Australians for more than four years where individuals have been subjected to price hikes, inflation, and supply chain constraints, making what were once staple pantry goods less affordable, or at times too difficult to access.

Thanks to a very generous contribution from VGW Holdings, we will be able to significantly expand our range of shelf stable products. The current range includes 20 staple products and thanks to this funding we will now be able to offer an additional 38 items to better support our customers.

This expansion allows us to provide a more diverse and inclusive product range that reflects the cultural, dietary, and nutritional needs of our community. We’re focusing on allergen-friendly options and culturally relevant staples to ensure we can support everyone who turns to us for help.

Our customer shopping experience is heavily reliant on very generous donations from producers, farmers and manufacturers. Recognising that some level of consistency for shelf stable items was important for our customers, we have wanted to expand out range of essential products for a long time, however the right level of funding was difficult to secure.

We are thrilled that we can now expand our range of essential products to ensure a constant supply of these items for our customers no matter what day of the week it is. Just some of the products already added includes oats, black tea, lactose-free UHT full cream milk, hygiene products, dishwashing liquid and laundry powder.

We can’t wait to see the rest of the range rolled out in July, thank you VGW Holdings, watch this space.

The seal of freshness

Our Community Kitchen has been producing tasty and nutritious meals since 2015 while simultaneously addressing food waste.

It is a model of efficiency, relying on donations of food from supermarkets, farmers, and food manufacturers. This not only helps reduce food waste but also ensures that the meals produced are cost-effective and environmentally sustainable. Recently we realised that by changing how we package our meals, we could include a wider variety of fresh produce.

The wonderful people at Packaging R Us enabled us to purchase a heavily discounted Vacuum Seal machine which has made a huge impact on the meals we can offer. Vacuum-sealed meals offer a convenient way to store and preserve food, extending shelf life and maintaining quality.

One of the biggest advantages is extended shelf life – by removing air and sealing food in airtight packaging, vacuum sealing keeps food fresher for longer – both in the fridge and freezer. Our meals now have a 3-week shelf-life.

This method also preserves the flavour, texture, and nutritional value of meals. With no exposure to oxygen, food maintains its original taste and doesn’t suffer from freezer burn or spoilage.

Our pre-prepared meals are distributed through our six branches in Perth, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Peel, Bunbury and Albany. They can be obtained in the branches or are made available from our charity partners which range from supporting the elderly who need easy no fuss meals to domestic violence survivors who may need a meal in the middle of the night quickly or someone going through serious illness who does not have the energy to cook. The list is endless.

We are so pleased that our new vacuum sealing machine allows us to include a wider variety of produce in our pre-prepared meals making them more delicious and nutritious for our customers.

Anyone for satay tonight? Check out our recipe of the month.

nom! Children

program takes stress out of mealtimes

Are the kids getting enough fruit and veggies in their diets? Are we eating enough of a variety of foods in our diet?

These are just some of the questions each parent asks themselves regularly, if not, multiple times a day.

Toddler eating habits, food allergies, dietary restrictions and budgeting are just some of the issues which make mealtimes stressful for parents.

Preparing meals while managing work, housework and childcare responsibilities can feel overwhelming at the best of times. Our nom! Children programs are designed to take the stress out of mealtimes and to give parents the confidence they need to ensure their family is eating healthy and nutritious meals within their budget.

With a toddler aged two and half years old and a four month old baby, Geraldine had been struggling to balance her family’s meal time requirements. The weekly food budget was being stretched to the limit and she was finding that she was spending too much time in the kitchen rather than being present with her family. Balancing everyone’s preferences, including her toddler who, Geraldine describes as a picky eater, – not to mention a white food category eater – while encouraging good manners and healthy habits was becoming a daily battle. Social media and parenting advice made Geraldine feel like she wasn’t doing enough and even made her feel guilty sometimes.

The four week nom! Children program helped Geraldine streamline dinner times and even helped with the budgeting side of things.

Held at the Child and Parent Centre Westminster in May, the nom! program covered topics such as:

  • Healthy eating for the whole family and learning to eat (introducing solids and texture progression)
  • Lunchboxes and nutrition label reading
  • Feeding the family on a budget
  • Stress free family mealtimes
  • Each week included group cooking and a shared meal where children were invited to join in with their parent

For Geraldine, the budgeting and meal planning sessions were very helpful as well as covering off foods that suit various age groups. She says that the program was a game-changer and she is now more attentive to what she feeds her whole family, not just her toddler. She now has the Australian Healthy Eating guide stuck on her fridge as a constant reminder to include foods from each food group into meals where possible. Geraldine said its really satisfying to know that her family are now eating more balanced meals each day.

After attending the nom! Program Geraldine has noticed that mealtimes are much less stressful and a planned out shopping list has huge benefits, “I realised a little can go a long way. With meal planning, shopping lists are planned out and streamlined rather than spontaneous buying. It has also helped reduce my prolonged time in the kitchen, meaning I have more time to spend with my family.” The impact of the nom! sessions is evident in that Geraldine has now increased the families fruit and veggie intake as well as increasing protein in their diets, “I’m now able to mix and match a variety of food to make a great healthy meal that is satisfying.”

Meal planning and budgeting has saved Geraldine time and money, and has even reduced food waste, but most importantly planning ahead and creating nutritious and balanced meals has reduced the stress of last-minute decisions.

We have nom! programs that suit all ages and abilities, and we can even tailor a program to suit a groups specific needs. Find out how today, and make mealtimes a fun, positive and engaging experience for all.

Max Gawn calling on Aussies to help provide three million meals to families facing winter hunger

With winter hitting hard and food costs soaring, AFL superstar Max Gawn is challenging Australians to help deliver three million* breakfasts to families doing it tough through Red Tractor, ALDI Australia and Foodbank’s ‘Buy One, Give One’ campaign.

From Wednesday, 2 July, every 1.6kg bag of Red Tractor oats purchased at ALDI stores across the country will see 1.6kg of oats donated to Foodbank when the product will be available as a Special Buy, with each donated pack of oats providing up to 40 meals for families in need.

Supporting the campaign is AFL superstar and Melbourne FC Captain Max Gawn, who kicked off the initiative at Foodbank’s distribution centre in Yarraville, Victoria.

“As an athlete, I know how important a good brekkie is to set you up for the day. But millions of Aussies are going without that basic start. When you grab your Red Tractor oats during this campaign, you’re not just feeding your family, you’re feeding another family too. It’s such a simple way to make a huge impact for Aussies doing it tough this winter,” said Gawn.

*3 million breakfasts are calculated using the 40g serving size of the 1.6kg product

Red Tractor and ALDI’s partnership with Foodbank comes at a pivotal time for Australians in need.

Foodbank’s Hunger Report 2024 highlights that low-income households are at a breaking point. One in five median income households (earning >$95K per year) are food insecure and more than half (59%) of all food insecure households in Australia are experiencing it at the severe level, regularly skipping meals or going entire days without food.

Red Tractor CEO Andrew Loader said, “Every day we see Australians choosing between heating and eating. This winter, we’re not just asking people to buy oats, we’re asking them to be part of the solution.”

“As a proud Australian brand, we see this as our responsibility. Every bag purchased doesn’t just support Australian farmers, it directly feeds families who otherwise might go without.”

Red Tractor’s ‘Buy One, Give One’ campaign and partnership with ALDI is in its second year, with last year’s campaign saw three million meals donated through Foodbank’s community programs. This year’s campaign aims to deliver even greater impact across the campaign period.

Foodbank Australia CEO, Brianna Casey AM, said, “We believe everyone deserves to have access to good food and there is nothing more satisfying on a cold winter’s morning than a warm bowl of oats to start the day. We are incredibly thankful to Red Tractor and ALDI for the generous support they provide Foodbank with this much-needed donation of delicious, nutritious Australian grown oats.”

ALDI Australia Buying Director of Breakfast products, Daniel Quinlan, said the company looks forward to continuing this partnership with Red Tractor and Foodbank.

“At ALDI, we’re proud to partner with Red Tractor and Foodbank on this meaningful initiative that supports Aussie families doing it tough this winter,” said Mr Quinlan.

“The ‘Buy One, Give One’ campaign is a simple yet powerful way to make a Good Difference, and we’re grateful to be part of a program that delivers real impact to local communities.”

THANK YOU, Red Tractor & ALDI

Cooking Classes Build Confidence

Fountain Gate Secondary College jumped at the opportunity to have the Cooking Class program at their school. Wellbeing Coordinator Kerry was keen to get involved as she knew it would be a great way to promote healthy eating, as well as build practical kitchen skills. She also knows that food brings people together, and that Cooking Classes would go a long way in strengthening family relationships.

And that’s what they got – plus a whole lot more! The program made a lasting impact on both students and their families.

Beyond strengthening relationships between staff and families, the classes created a space for students to connect meaningfully with their parents and opened the door to positive communication channels.

“It has been nice seeing students connecting with their parent or guardian in the room, they all look so happy to learn new skills and try new tastes. In a world where connection is lacking, it’s great to see students truly engaging.”

Something for everyone

Students of varying backgrounds and interests found value in the program.  One student, initially hesitant to participate, quickly found that he had gained confidence in the kitchen and developed his knife skills. He especially enjoyed making rice paper rolls and the okonomiyaki which he enjoyed cooking for his family at home – something he never envisioned.

Another student, who has a long-standing love for cooking, appreciated the opportunity to deepen her knowledge in a fun and hands-on environment. She learned how to prepare new healthy and nutritious meals while spending quality time with her mum, something that’s getting harder and harder to do. Busy family schedules have been a bit of a time thief, so cooking classes were a welcome activity.

But the most surprising transformation came from a student who had always been a very picky eater. A self-confessed chicken nugget fan, this student was inspired by the facilitators and fresh produce to try new vegetables – even discovering they liked things they had convinced themselves they didn’t. The cherry on top was the increased confidence in the kitchen, from knife handling to food safety and everything in between.

Confidence, Connection and Commitment to Healthy Eating

The inclusion of take-home food hampers from Foodbank Victoria allowed families to try recipes together outside the classroom. Many reported that they’d begun to incorporate the recipes into their regular meal planning, promoting healthier eating habits at home and encouraging their children to take a more active role in family cooking.

Fountain Gate Secondary College welcomed our facilitator, Jane into their kitchen with open arms. But if given the opportunity to welcome a guest chef to Cooking Classes, they unanimously chose Jamie Oliver—renowned for his commitment to healthy eating and inspiring young people to love food.

Testimonials

Parents and carers saw the benefits reach beyond the classroom:

“This program has definitely helped him become more confident” said one mum. ‘Not only in the kitchen and cooking, but also within himself. We are so grateful for the opportunity.”

“Doing these cooking classes has given me the opportunity to spend quality one-on-one time with my daughter and help her gain skills she will use throughout her life.”

“This program is amazing. I’ve enjoyed learning new recipes and using produce I wouldn’t normally use. It has broadened my horizons.”

This seems to good to be true. From organisation, to preparation and relationships, this program is absolutely amazing! We have been so pleased that our school can be part of this program and that it benefitted so many different families within our school. Between the onsite cooking classes and the food hampers, 24 families have benefited from this program. It is lovely to see the families come together to cook and prepare a healthy meal together. Their teamwork and bonding as a family has also been wonderful to watch throughout this program. This is something that we would most definitely recommend to others,” – Kerry Gore, school contact coordinating the Cooking Classes.

Empowering Leadership and Fostering Autonomy

Set amongst the gumtrees and ferns of the Dandenong ranges, the essence of Monbulk Primary School’s Breakfast Club is student leadership and autonomy.

On a cold and dreary Tuesday morning the students were met with warmth not only from the steaming pot of porridge, but from the student leaders and volunteers that make breakfast club “homely”. That warmth is a direct result of the care shown by the students and community members who make it happen.

Running every Tuesday and Thursday, serving 50–60 students out of a total school population of 230, Breakfast Club not only provides a nutritious start to the day, it has also become a dynamic platform for student leadership, autonomy, and community connection.

Student Empowerment

The heart of the Breakfast Club’s success lies in its student-led model. Year five and six students genuinely take ownership—managing food stations, restocking breakfast items, and even stepping up to run the Club independently when the coordinator, Meg, was unwell recently.

To foster this sense of ownership, Meg sent a survey to year five and six students, asking that they choose their preferred days and roles should they want to be involved. This gave the students a voice and a sense of responsibility over their roles. This structure has cultivated a culture of trust, initiative, and pride among the students. As one teacher noted, students who attend Breakfast Club, whether it be to participate in a leadership role or just to have brekky, displayed improved behaviour and engagement throughout the day.

The Club’s “cruisey” atmosphere, as Meg describes it, is a testament to the autonomy embedded in its operations. Students are not just helpers—they are leaders. They introduce new breakfast items each term (like warm porridge with honey in Term 2), adapt to changing needs, and ensure the smooth running of the club with minimal adult intervention.

This autonomy extends beyond the morning responsibilities. Student leaders also manage the fruit bowls, ensuring classrooms are well stocked and ready each day. This has led to healthier eating habits, with more fruit being consumed across the school.

Community

While student leadership is central, the club thrives thanks to strong community ties. Parents regularly volunteer, and the local Country Women’s Association (CWA) plays a key role, especially on Tuesdays. With a roster of eight members—including Cheryl and Wendy, both former students—the CWA brings a sense of continuity and heritage.

The school’s collaboration with the CWA and relationship with parent volunteers reflects a broader culture of shared responsibility and community-mindedness. It’s not just a school breakfast program—it’s a community.

At Monbulk Primary School, Breakfast Club is more than food. It’s a space where students gather, connect, and start their day with a sense of belonging. Even those who don’t come for breakfast, still come along to chat with friends, reinforcing the notion that food brings people together.

Monbulk Primary School’s Breakfast Club is a beautiful example of how leadership and autonomy can be nurtured in young students. By trusting them with responsibilities and celebrating their contributions, the school has created a program that feeds both body and spirit—one bowl of warm porridge at a time!

You were there for Kerry
during the floods

No power. No kitchen. No way to cook.

Sad Unemployed mature woman holding her son in her arms looking through a window

When the floods tore through her regional town in Lismore, Kerry was left with nothing.

With her child to care for, Kerry skipped meals, she says:

“Some days I just didn’t eat, and we didn’t have much to eat anyway.”

For weeks that turned into months, they lived off canned food, rice, and donations from you, delivered by Foodbank.

“The hampers saved us, without them, I don’t know how we would’ve gotten through.”

– Kerry

Today, three years on from the crisis that changed everything, Kerry and her family are still rebuilding their lives. It hasn’t been easy. But through every challenge, one thing has remained constant – your generosity.

Thanks to you, Kerry isn’t facing hunger alone. Your commitment to fighting hunger is making a real and lasting difference – not just in Kerry’s life, but in the lives of so many families doing it tough.

What do our customers say?

Our 2024 Customer Survey, conducted last October, gave us a real insight into our customers circumstances.

We gained more information on who our customers are, why they are seeking food relief and how this has affected them in their daily lives.

A shocking 89% of customers surveyed said that the reason they didn’t have enough food was because they had to prioritise other more important things they had to pay for such as rent, bills and medicine. 87% agreed food was far too expensive to purchase at regular supermarkets.

The survey also revealed that 71% of participants use Foodbank as their first choice for grocery shopping, with 85% accessing our services for protein (59%), grocery (87%) and fruit and vegetables (85%). We were grateful to see that many customers expressed their gratitude for our services and the positive impact it has had on their lives with staff described as helpful, welcoming and respectful.

We often hear about people skipping meals to feed their children or even their pets – just over half of the customers who responded to the survey backed up this claim. They said that they were hungry but didn’t eat because they didn’t have enough money for food, almost 80% said they had to cut the size of their meal or skip it altogether, almost half were worried about their food running out  before they could afford to buy more, while 34% admitted to losing weight because of a lack of money to buy food.

The survey also enabled us to gather some very valuable information about what our customers would like to see improved or more of, and thanks to generous funding, we have already been able to get the ball rolling on serval initiatives to improve the overall customer experience. This includes a state-wide project to carry more culturally diverse and dietary-specific foods, including vegetarian and gluten-free options and wanting more budget-friendly meats and essential household items.

Calls for better signage have been addressed at all of our branches, and we are working on a more diverse product selection and product availability through our Everyday Food Essential expansion project which is scheduled for roll-out in July.

The survey responses showed clearly how the cost-of-living crisis has impacted households of varying demographics, those renting (56%), homeowners (37%) and a huge 71% of people who indicated that they lived with other people such as family or housemates to help make end meet.

The food and grocery budget is usually the first thing most people cut leading to a fast-growing problem of food insecurity. It can affect anyone and could be the next-door neighbour, a family member or a friend and it is not necessarily obvious. It is an issue that remains hidden due to the stigma attached to reaching out for help.

We encourage people to come to us before their circumstances dictate that they are in trouble of losing the roof over their heads or that they have to turn their electricity off or not change the tyres on their car. We not only offer very affordable and nutritious food for families that are on a shoestring budget. By shopping with us, a small part of an already stretched budget can make all the difference.

5 Year milestone

The Emergency Relief and Food Access Service (ERFAS) celebrated a huge milestone this month, marking five years since operations began.

ERFAS is a vital initiative driven by the Financial Wellbeing Collective, designed to help Western Australians navigate periods of financial hardship. Whether it’s paying rent, paying utility bills or helping to put food on the table – ERFAS provides critical support to those in crisis, offering timely and compassionate assistance when it’s needed most.

Launched in 2020 as an urgent public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic, ERFAS was designed to be a simple, centralised access point to emergency and food relief services. The service has evolved into a long-term, sustainable model that now supports thousands of people every year. Since the service launch, more than 140,000 calls for help have been answered.

Central to ERFAS’s strength is its collaborative approach as it works under the umbrella of the Financial Wellbeing Collective – a partnership of 12 community service providers committed to addressing the drivers and impacts of financial hardship in Western Australia.  Anglicare WA has a team of dedicated assessors working to deliver the ERFAS service, with partners Communicare, Mission Australia, The Spiers Centre and Uniting WA all working closely alongside to deliver emergency relief. These efforts are amplified by partnering with further external organisations such as Foodbank, Starting Over Support, St Patrick’s Community Support Centre, Vinnies WA, and The Salvation Army WA, which ensures clients receive seamless, statewide support.

Due to the big increase in the demand for ERFAS services, a referrals assessor from the Financial Wellbeing Collective has been established at the Foodbank Perth Airport branch to assist customers with their needs onsite, five days a week for just over a year.

Having a dedicated Financial Support Worker onsite to assist customers has been invaluable. The month of May saw the ERFAS phone line receive almost 3,000 calls from individuals seeking various types of assistance, with the primary reason for reaching out being cost of living pressures. Almost 800 referrals were issued for Foodbank, with requests for food relief climbing to the highest point to date this year.

Being a part of Financial Wellbeing Collective allows ERFAS to be a part of a wrap-around service that, for our customers, relieves the burden of food costs meaning individuals can redirect their limited financial resources toward other critical areas, such as healthcare, paying rent or paying utility bills.

We are so grateful for this collaboration which makes reaching out for help so much easier for those seeking emergency assistance. You can watch Anglicare’s video celebrating their 5 years and work with us here.
