Southern Ports supports struggling families

Forklift with packed hampers Foodbank WA

Western Australia’s regional and remote regions boast beautiful and unique landscapes, flora, fauna and Cultural ways of life.

What can often be forgotten is the geographic isolation and socio-economic challenges that can create a multifaceted problem around food security.

The fact is that living in regional and remote Australia is widely considered more expensive than Perth across a range of goods and services. Food is generally more expensive in regional Western Australia due to vast distances and transportation costs.

Many regional areas are far from major distribution hubs, requiring long-distance transportation for fresh produce, meat, and other goods. Fuel costs for these journeys add up, and these expenses are passed on to consumers.

We are so grateful to our amazing partners across the State, which help to alleviate some of the burden of accessing affordable, nutritious and culturally appropriate food.

Thanks to our partnership with Southern Ports, and it’s very generous $25,000 of funding allocated to help fight hunger in the Great Southern, Southwest and Goldfields-Esperance regions, vulnerable communities received 655 hampers, which is equal to 10,480 meals.

“This cost-of-living crisis is decimating family budgets, those living regionally have been hit hard. We are so pleased that Southern Ports’ ongoing commitment will continue to support our vulnerable communities across southern WA. The positive impact of the first year of the partnership was incredible and it is vitally important that we continue to assist communities where we can. Together we are making a lasting difference” said Kate O’Hara Foodbank WA CEO.

Last year 371,000 Western Australian households experienced food insecurity, with many skipping meals or going whole days without food. This includes over 120,000 children who experience hunger on a daily basis.

Looking forward, our Bunbury and Albany branches will continue to provide hampers to the South West and Great Southern regions, and we will partner with Esperance Care Services to provide hampers further south into the Goldfields-Esperance region and surrounds.

We couldn’t do what we do without our valuable partners. Thank you, Southern Ports.

Omega Fresh
ups the ante

Zucchini Foodbank WA

We are so grateful to the amazing growers and producers we partner with who help to ensure that no family goes without.

After receiving overwhelming feedback from our customers that healthy, balanced diets were becoming increasingly unaffordable for Western Australian families on low to middle-range incomes in the cost-of-living crisis, we decided to make all our fruits and vegetables free for our customers.

Fast forward almost six months and our customers are thrilled with our fruit and vegetable offering.

Behind the scenes we are working hard with growers to ensure we have plenty of supply. We anticipate that more than a million kilos of fresh produce will be provided free across the State through our branches and Mobile Foodbanks this year.  We are so grateful to the amazing growers and producers we partner with who help to ensure that no family goes without.

Omega Fresh have donated vegetables to us for a few years now but decided to step it up a notch in 2024, boosting our fresh vegetable offering by a massive 7,000kg, donating an abundance of eggplant, zucchini, greens and sprouts just to name a few.

Eggplant, zucchini, greens, and sprouts are nutritional powerhouses, offering a myriad of health benefits. Rich in antioxidants, eggplants combat free radicals, promoting heart health and reducing inflammation. Their fibre content supports digestion and helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Zucchini, with its high-water content, aids hydration and is an excellent low-calorie source of vitamin C, which boosts immunity and skin health.

Leafy greens, such as spinach and kale, are loaded with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as iron and calcium, supporting bone health, vision, and overall vitality. Their abundance of dietary fibre promotes digestive regularity and gut health. Sprouts, such as alfalfa or broccoli sprouts, are nutrient-dense and high in enzymes that enhance digestion and nutrient absorption. They are also rich in vitamins and antioxidants that support cellular repair and immune function.

Phong Le, known as the Zucchini King, operates out of the Perth Markets and has supported Foodbank for many years decided to step up his support last year, saying “seeing the effects of what the cost-of-living crisis was doing to so many in the community, I was determined to do what I could to help. I also hate to see food go to waste, so it’s win-win.”

We are so pleased that our customers can incorporate these nutritious vegetables into their diets helping their overall wellbeing.

Western Australian farmers feeding hope

Grain. Foodbank WA

When like-minded people get together and want to make a difference, they can achieve big results.

Thanks to CBH Group, a grain growers’ cooperative that handles, markets and processes grain from the wheatbelt of Western Australia, generous Western Australian farmers donated wheat and barley in November and December last year raising $30,852 for us, feeding hope for change for those most vulnerable.

The CBH Growers program empowers farmers to donate some of their grain when they visit weigh stations across Western Australia or via LoadNet – CBH’s online portal. Donated grain is then sold with the proceeds being donated to Foodbank WA to provide food relief to those struggling to put food on the table.

Kate O’Hara, Foodbank WA CEO said: “We are incredibly grateful to these farmers who have donated a portion of their grain to Foodbank WA and to CBH for their Growers Program.”

There are 370,000 Western Australian households in food stress and those living in regional areas are often harder hit. We can only help those most in need with support of generous donors.

This wonderful initiate sees the grower choose how much they want to donate, with all grain types accepted.

As the cost of living continues to drive demand for food relief, these donations are vital.

Lisa’s story

Grocery receipt. Foodbank WA

“I think that Foodbank is the difference between eating and not eating”

“Some weeks, I don’t have money for food, and this is where I come because I can’t afford the supermarkets. Sometimes you can’t get absolutely all of your shopping there, but it can make a big difference to supplement what you do have to buy at the supermarket. Some weeks, without Foodbank, I wouldn’t be eating at all.”

Having only moved to Western Australia a few years ago, Lisa was excited to start a new chapter of her life. Her kids are grown up and while all of her family live in NSW, Perth offered the sea-change she was after.

Everything was working out well for Lisa, she loved the weather and laid-back Perth lifestyle, and she was enjoying her job. Then out of the blue Lisa became unwell in January of 2024.

It quickly became evident that she would be unable to work at all and Lisa’s work leave evaporated. Her full-time job that was her safety net, was gone in an instant. She hasn’t been able to work since. A terrifying concept – considering the cost-of-living crisis which has been swirling around for years now, and the never-ending bills which land in our inboxes and mailboxes like clockwork, only to be more expensive than the last.

Lisa didn’t know where to turn. Centrelink was her first port of call, and from there she learned that she could speak with a financial councillor for some guidance around how to plan for her future. Having worked her whole adult life, she began to navigate the welfare system which was a huge learning curve. It was her financial counsellor who told her about Foodbank. Initially, Lisa had to overcome her pride to reach out for help, but she is so glad she did admit that it’s made a huge difference to her budget and has eased her stress levels.

“It’s really taken a load off, especially when the bills come in. Also for me, trying to find healthy food and eating properly, which is so important when you are going through health problems, and to actually have access to veggies and fruit is a lifesaver. With my condition, I have moments where I can’t cook, I’m totally unfunctional. So for those moments I have Foodbank’s pre-packaged meals in the freezer ready to go, all I have to do is heat it up.”

At the moment, it seems that Lisa will be off work for another 12 months while she navigates her health issues. She is extremely grateful to the assistance she has received encourages anyone who is on the brink of financial stress to reach out and ask for help. The financial counsellors Lisa was in contact with have access to a wide range of integrated and person-centred services designed to reduce the impact of financial hardship.

Of her journey through this hard period of her life, Lisa says, “It’s something that no one can see around the corner, no one can see what’s coming, and anyone could find themselves in a position where they might need to reach out for help, most definitely anyone. I never thought this would happen to me. It’s scary to think that something like this can happen so quickly, which can throw people off on a different path in life.”

Happy that her kids are grown up and won’t be affected by her inability to work, Lisa says she doesn’t know how the average family is making ends meet.

“I think that Foodbank is the difference between eating and not eating. Some weeks, I don’t have money for food, and this is where I come because I can’t afford the supermarkets. Sometimes you can’t get absolutely all of your shopping there, but it can make a big difference to supplement what you do have to buy at the supermarket. Some weeks, without Foodbank, I wouldn’t be eating at all.”

How do we meet demand?

Raw meats and salmon. Foodbank WA

9.2 million. That’s the number of meals we provided last financial year across Western Australia.

We work with farmers, wholesalers, manufactures and retailers who donate and redirect surplus product to us but to meet demand we are always working behind the scenes to see how we can better support our customers and provide them with a wide and varied products to choose from.

While the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on families and individuals has been devastating, many businesses have also been impacted greatly due to manufacturing, labour, logistical and transportation costs rising exponentially. This has meant that many of our donors have had to reassess how they operate, to ensure more efficiency and many, as a result, also donate less. One such example is protein products. The last two years have seen a dramatic drop, 66% to be exact in the amount of protein that is donated.

To ensure a constant and consistent supply of fruit, vegetables, meat and shelf-stable items, we keep a very close eye on volumes of food that are donated so that we can bridge the gap where its required.

With our customer base growing each day, last year we applied to the Department of Communities for a $500,000 grant to purchase additional sources of protein, creating our first Protein Supply Program.

Our amazing donors Inghams, DBC and Westpork, Harvey Beef, Craig Mostyn Group and Austral Fisheries who generously donate to us on a weekly basis, have in addition to this, generously offered us reduced rates to purchase additional protein at a discounted fee whenever they have excess stock on hand.

Thanks to our donors and to the generous grant from the Department of Communities, we have been able to keep up with the increase in demand we see across our branches across the state. We continue to innovate to create a sustainable and continuous supply of food that meets growing demand and ensures protein isn’t just a ‘sometimes’ food for our customers.

This community effort and collective responsibility means that the most vulnerable in our community can have healthy and nutritious meals available for themselves and their families.

Christmas spirit reaches remote WA

Girl with box of food. Foodbank WA

In an act of generosity and community spirit, families in the remote Aboriginal communities of Djarindjin and Ardyaloon received much-needed hampers late last year filled with essential items and treats for Christmas.

This initiative organised through the Broome Youth Care Centre, was only possible thanks to the generosity of partners like Hawaiian and Sodexo.

Hawaiian generously covered the cost of the hampers, while Sodexo coordinated the delivery logistics with the help of TGE, providing the transport at no cost on both occasions.

“As part of Sodexo’s Stop Hunger initiative, we are committed to fighting food insecurity in partnership with Foodbank and local NGOs. We are proud to work with an extensive supplier network that allows us to respond to logistical challenges and deliver vital support and services to remote communities. Our commitment is to improve quality of life where we operate and create lasting positive impacts, ensuring no community is left behind” said Adrian Lorenzin, Sodexo Australia Director of Supply Management and Tech & Services.

The hampers were packed and delivered in time for Christmas, ensuring that families doing it tough could enjoy some treats during the festive season. Lucie, the primary contact at the Broome Youth Care Centre, played a pivotal role in organising and delivering the hampers in both communities.

Richard Kilbane, Chief Operating Officer at Hawaiian, said: For over 25 years, Hawaiian has been a proud member of the Broome community through Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa. We understand that many Western Australians, particularly those in remote areas, face challenging times, especially during the festive period.

Through our connection with the local Broome community and collaborating with our partners, we identified an opportunity to make a difference and show our support and care for local families in need.

Small acts of kindness can lead to a greater ripple effect, which is especially meaningful during the season of giving. We hope this inspires more kindness and that we succeeded in spreading some extra cheer this holiday season.”

By coming together, we have not only provided practical support but are feeding change for families in some of Western Australia’s most remote areas.

Lyndsay’s volunteer story

Lyndsay volunteer Foodbank Geraldton WA

Volunteers – the heart of Foodbank

Volunteering for an organisation can be a profoundly rewarding experience that is enriching for the individual, the organisation and the community as a whole. When individuals dedicate their time and skills to a cause they are passionate about they create tangible, positive change in the lives of others.

The sense of purpose derived from contributing to meaningful work is unmatched.

As we have seen, volunteers often form strong connections with like-minded individuals who share their passion for making a difference and these relationships in turn foster a sense of belonging and community, reducing feelings of isolation and enhancing overall well-being.

Lyndsay has been volunteering at the Geraldton branch for the last three months and says that he loves to volunteer because it provides an opportunity to develop new skills, gain valuable experience and build self-confidence, all while giving back to the community.

“I love the team spirit at Foodbank and I love to help customers and to have a chat. Sometimes a friendly chat is all someone needs to perk them up for the day. Volunteering also fills my days with fun, I am always working on something different.”

Lyndsay has always volunteered his time for causes he is passionate about with stints with fire and rescue, lifesaving, and the local ambulance service. Always trying his hand at something different, in his spare time Lyndsay loves to pickle veggies, smoke hams and go fishing.

The rewards of volunteering extends beyond just personal growth, seeing the impact of the work volunteers do firsthand reinforces the importance of compassion, and the gratitude seen by those benefiting from the service provided is a powerful reminder of the good in humanity.

Volunteering is a selfless act that rewards the giver as much as the receiver. It nurtures empathy, strengthens communities and fosters hope, making the world a better place.

Food is a basic human right

Kids eating lunch in a playground. Foodbank WA

At Foodbank WA we believe everyone should have access to healthy food. There are Western Australians going without every day, and we are working hard to change that.

Food is fundamental to human survival and development. It nourishes the body, fuels the mind, and sustains communities. Despite its critical role in life, hunger and food insecurity persist globally.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations more than 70 years ago acknowledges food as a fundamental human right, stating that “everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of themselves and their family, including food.” (article 25).

Sadly, the gap between this ideal and reality remains stark, with over 800 million people worldwide suffering from chronic hunger.

The 2024 Foodbank Hunger report revealed that Australia-wide more than 2 million households are experiencing extreme hardship, and severely food insecure households are living with constant stress and worry about food. 79% saw their food run out without enough money to purchase more.

In Western Australia 370,000 households experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months with close to 200,000 households experiencing severe food insecurity in the same time frame with 1 in 5 people facing days of no food.

Food insecurity weakens communities, can affect livelihoods, health and educational outcomes. Children in particular are vulnerable to the effects of hunger, which can limit their ability to build and strengthen their social and emotional skills, and it can affect their ability to learn as well as having many adverse health consequences.

The right to food is intertwined with other human rights, such as health, education, and social equality. Hunger undermines these rights, as people who do not have access to healthy, nutritious food are less likely to access education or participate in social activities or be active members in their communities. On the flip side, fulfilling the right to food supports broader goals for society such as fostering healthier, more resilient populations.

Access to Foodbank and nutrition education, such as our nom! programs exemplify how targeted efforts can bridge gaps and reinforce the interconnectedness of individuals and communities.

Recognising food as a basic human right is a necessity. Addressing this right is a step toward a more just and equitable world, where the dignity of all people is upheld. By prioritising food security, we invest in the foundations of humanity itself.

30 years of change
our evolution

Foodbank WA history

As we look back on another year, we reflect on what this year has meant for us as we marked a huge milestone for Foodbank in WA, 30 years of operation.

While we wish that services such as ours were not needed, the sad reality is that more and more people need us each week.

Thanks to the most kind-hearted partners, supporters, donors, growers and second-to-none volunteers and staff, each day we push and strive to ensure we meet our purpose to feed. educate. advocate. Let’s take a look back to see how it all began…

Rewinding the clock back to 1993, the idea of Foodbank in Western Australia was born. The wonderful people at the Lotteries Commission provided us a $15,000 grant for a feasibility study under the stewardship of Doug Paling for the need and viability of food relief in Western Australia. This proved beyond a show of a doubt that there was a food insecurity problem in our State and by late October 1994, we opened our doors and served our first customer at our original premises in Belmont.

Our first nutrition education session was held not long after in 1995 with the first of many participants learning how to eat healthy on a budget under the FoodCent$ pilot program. The following year saw the official launch of the program with support of the Department of Health.

In a move that would revolutionise how we operated forever, we opened the doors to our first regional branch in August 2000 to provide food relief in Albany and the Southwest. Our rapid expansion continued with our Peel branch opening the same year followed by Geraldton in 2003, Bunbury in 2004 and Kalgoorlie, our first purpose-built premises in 2011, followed by Geraldton in 2016.

Recognising kids were going to school without breakfast we partnered with schools around Western Australia to provide healthy brekkies through our School Breakfast Program which came to life in 2001 with just 17 schools. Today we have 552 schools registered all across our state and feed 26,100 students a week who would otherwise go without breakfast, and in some cases the program even ensures lunch for some of the most vulnerable.

Foodbank WA history

Our passion for nutrition and education grew over the years to encompass a Healthy Food for All vision and the introduction of our Superhero Foods® HQ characters in 2013 which made teaching kids about nutrition a lot more fun.

In 2014 we introduced our Perth Airport School Fruit Van which to this day delivers 10kg boxes of fruit a week to 75 schools with thanks to Stan Perron Charitable Foundation and McCusker Foundation.

As the need for our services grew, we moved locations, firstly to Welshpool and then finally to the Perth Airport precinct where we moved to our purpose-built Centre for Hunger Relief thanks to the Department of Communities, Lotterywest and BHP in 2015. The only Foodbank Community Kitchen in Australia came to life here, with the first ready to eat frozen meal produced that same year. Our amazing Community Kitchen changes surplus ingredients into delicious and healthy ready to eat meals for customers and reduces our food waste greatly.

Our commitment to our local communities grew further in 2016 when we recognised that we were in a position to assist with natural disasters that can cause unexpected food insecurity, and we joined the frontline emergency relied on to support the Yarloop fires. Followed by so many more.

Our Mobile Foodbank hit the road in 2019 taking Foodbank into the suburbs to reach more people in Armadale, Midland, Joondalup, Fremantle, Willagee and Ellenbrook. We now have 76 locations regionally and in the metro area.

Recognising the need for consistent availability of staples, in 2023 we launched Everyday Food Essentials to ensure we always had this range available to customers.

We continue to and adapt and innovate to ensure we support our customers with the dignity and respect each and every individual through our doors deserves. Continuing on our journey to provide healthy and nutritious food for those most vulnerable in our community, we thank each and every person who has supported us along the way.

Meat safety tips

Raw meats and salmon. Foodbank WA

Some great tips to for food safety and reducing food waste.

Meat can be expensive to purchase. Here are some food safety tips on how to be food safe with meat and how to store it reduce food waste.

Before use

  • Always wash your hands before and after handling raw meat.
  • Do not wash meat or chicken before use, this could cause bacteria to be carried by the water and splashed around the kitchen. It is better to ensure the meat is cooked thoroughly.

Storage

  • Keep food at safe temperatures, cold food below 50C and hot food above 600C.
  • Always store raw meat in the fridge and below 50C – this reduces the risk of food poisoning by either stopping or slowing the growth of bacteria.
  • Raw meat should be stored on the lowest shelf in the fridge to prevent contamination of other foods.
  • Tip – the lower shelves of a fridge are usually the coldest!
  • When storing meat in the freezer, wrap it and mark it with the date it was frozen. This effectively puts the use by date on pause. If the meat has 2 days until the use by prior to freezing, then it will have 2 days left after thawing.

Preparation

  • Always defrost meat in the refrigerator or microwave, NOT on the bench top or in water.
  • Use a separate chopping board for raw meats and other foods.
  • If cooking chicken, pork, sausages or mince make sure it is cooked all the way through and the juices run clear.
Lets Feed The Family 2024 food safety

Storage after cooking

  • After cooking you need to follow the two-hour/four-hour rule.
  • Less than 2 hours, you can eat or once stopped steaming, cover and refrigerate. Leftovers can be kept for no longer than 2-3 days in the refrigerator, then either eat, freeze or throw away.
  • Between 2 and 4 hours post cooking: consume food immediately or throw away.
  • More than 4 hours post cooking: food must be thrown away as it is not safe to eat or store.

Tip: use by versus best before

  • Use by: Food safety: food is not safe to eat past the use by date.
  • Best before: Food quality: the food may still be safe to eat, however the nutritional value and the quality of the food may have deteriorated.
