It could be your Mum or Dad,
or you.

Beverley's story Foodbank WA

Food insecurity doesn’t discriminate.

For one person it’s the loss of a few shifts at work that becomes the breaking point that sends someone into poverty.

For the person down the road from you, it could be an unexpected bill, a school expense, a family breakdown or serious illness. For your elderly neighbour it could be that they are the victim of Elder Abuse.

Elder abuse is when a person causes harm or distress to an older person who has a relationship of trust with them – like an adult child, their partner or a carer.

While the term Elder Abuse seems like a relatively new phrase, the heartless crime itself has been around for a long time. As with most types of abuse, Elder abuse can be very obvious or it can be very subtle and hard to spot. It can be a type of domestic and family violence, and can include physical abuse, psychological or emotional abuse, social abuse, financial abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. It can be short-lived, or it can be a pro-longed and planned method of control and manipulation.

Some examples of Elder abuse include living in the older person’s home and refusing to help pay for expenses, or refusing to care for the older person after agreeing to. It can also be refusing to pay back loans or abusing Power of Attorney or stealing money or belongings from the older person, or forcing an older person to sign a Will, contract, Power of Attorney or Enduring Guardian appointment.

Neglecting the older person, for example, failing to provide them with food or medical care is also classified as Elder abuse as is bullying, name-calling, verbal abuse, or treating an older person like a child. Physical abuse is also not uncommon, with pushing, shoving or being rough with an older person being classified as Elder abuse, as is any unwanted sexual contact.

Financial scams targeting older people are also frequent, taking advantage of vulnerable people through identity theft, fraudulent payments for care or services that weren’t provided, Government impersonation scams and the list goes on.

A report published by the Australian Institute of Family Studies in December 2021 found that a shocking 1 in 6 older Australians reported experiencing abuse, making Elder Abuse a very serious problem.

Elder abuse has many far-reaching consequences, financially it can be completely crippling, even leading people to falling below the poverty line. Often going under-reported due to embarrassment or shame, Elder abuse can lead to individuals life savings being wiped out and those people having to struggle to make ends meet when they are at a very vulnerable stage in the lives, often not in a position to rebuild their lives.

No matter how big or small the deception, it can leave older adults and their families financially and emotionally devastated.

There are many misconceptions about what leads individuals to reach out for a helping hand at Foodbank, and everyone has their own story. We strive to be the safety net that people need when their lives take an unexpected turn, to ensure that they can keep a roof over their heads and their power on. If we can ensure that everybody has access to fresh and nutritious food, then those struggling in our communities have one less thing to worry about.

Let’s catch them before they fall.

What does 26,200 kilos of fruit look like?

Perth Airport School Fruit Van. Foodbank WA

More than just feeding hungry tummies, fruit helps kids stay energised, focused and healthy in both body and mind.

Thanks to Perth Airport and the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation, the Perth Airport School Fruit Van delivers 10 kilos of free fruit to 75 schools around Perth every school week of the year. This is more than 150,000 pieces of fruit a year!

If you picture an average apple weighing about 150 grams, that would be roughly 173,000 apples. Stacked, it would fill about 13 large delivery trucks (which can carry 2,000kg). In a collaborative effort, fruit is donated from local growers, packed into hampers by our volunteers and then is delivered by us to 75 participating schools. Running the Perth Airport School Fruit Van ensures that students who are at higher risk of socioeconomic disadvantage have regular access to fresh produce.

The types of fruit supplied across the year varied with seasonality, however, typically include apples, oranges, mandarins, watermelons and stone fruit.

The Perth Airport School Fruit Van clocks up some serious kilometres each year, travelling from Armadale and out to Myaree, up to Butler, Lockridge, Belmont and beyond since the start of the program 10 years ago.

Ensuring kids are adequately nourished supports both their physical and cognitive development. Fruit is rich in essential nutrients, high in fibre, supports immunity and cognitive function, and promotes healthy growth and development.

More than just feeding hungry tummies, fruit helps kids stay energised, focused and healthy in both body and mind.

Maggie’s volunteer story

Maggie Foodbank WA volunteer

“What don’t I love about Foodbank, I love everything!”

Maggie is one in a million. Recently celebrating seven years with Foodbank Peel and we can’t imagine the branch without her.

Having relocated to Mandurah eight years ago, Maggie thought it would be a great time to start volunteering. She connected with the Peel Volunteer Resource Centre, and Foodbank was one of the options they suggested. She popped into the branch for visit and started the very next day, gift wrapping for Christmas at the shopping centre, and then started in the branch the following week.

When asked what she likes most about Foodbank her answer is full of passion “What don’t I love about Foodbank, I love everything!”

It’s my happy place. I love the family feeling I have with the team, I have the best little pocket rocket Boss, building friendships and bonding with everyone I am around. As well as everyone cares for each other. We get to be part of the paying it forward, by caring for our community in the work we do.”

In her spare time Maggie loves cooking, it makes her excited to be creative and to experiment with food. And of course, spending time with her family.

We are so lucky to have you Maggie, thank you for everything that you do.

Get involved

Whether you donate to Foodbank WA with funds or food, give your time through volunteering, or simply spread the word, your involvement helps to feed hope and grow more resilient communities.
No one can do everything–but everyone can do something!

Donate money Donate Food Donate time or services

Individuals, community groups, schools and businesses all get involved raising funds for Foodbank WA. We’d love your help too when it comes to community fundraising for food assistance.

Hold a food drive Start a fundraiser Support a fundraiser

Volunteering with Foodbank WA gives you the chance to directly help people in a fun and flexible way. You could be helping shoppers choose affordable food, assisting in our warehouse, helping at a Mobile Foodbank, in our Community Kitchen preparing delicious meals, at a Foodbank stall or an event.

Meet Pablo and Pedro, two Guide Dog WA puppies living at the Boronia Pre-release Centre for Women.

We have been very lucky to have the ladies from Boronia Pre-release Centre for Women volunteer with us on a regular basis for many years now. Currently, we have five ladies who do a variety of jobs which help them learn warehousing and customer service skills while contributing to the community.

The five-and-a-half-month-old brothers (who are growing very quickly!) have been hard at work learning socialisation and obedience skills from selected prisoners who’ve been specially trained as puppy handlers.

As part of their training, Pablo and Pedro visit Perth’s Foodbank Centre every week with Boronia’s minimum-security prisoners who volunteer with us.

But it’s not just the pups who are learning new skills. Their handlers say the dogs are also teaching them some very important life lessons.

The pre-release program provides housing in an environment that closely mirrors life outside of prison as it attempts to allow for a less traumatic transition back to everyday life. Staff help facilitate training of the prisoners and try to arrange employment on their release in conjunction with local businesses as a measure to prevent reoffending.

Oodbank WA Ways to Prevent Food Waste Image of Produce

This Mental Health Month we want to remind everyone of how closely food insecurity and mental health are intertwined.

We play a critical role in supporting mental health by addressing both the physical and emotional challenges that come with food insecurity and supporting people with access to nutritious choices.

The very first thing we do is reduce stress and anxiety by providing immediate access to food. When people have their basic need for food met, they can focus on other areas of their life, such as finding employment, securing stable housing, or seeking mental health support, rather than being consumed by the stress of survival.

We also ensure we operate within community settings where individuals are treated with dignity and respect. This sense of being supported and valued can improve self-esteem and reduce feelings of isolation and shame, which often accompany food insecurity. We prioritise dignity and offer a welcoming and stigma-free environment—where our customers feel less ashamed about needing assistance.

Another way we can support people to improve their mental health is through the provision of healthy choices for people needing food relief. Research shows a diet higher in a wide range of fruits, vegetables, legumes, wholegrains and fish help reduce the risk of and improve depressive symptoms.

Recognising that a healthy, balanced diet is becoming increasingly unaffordable for Western Australian’s, we have transitioned to providing free fruit and vegetables to our registered customers over the past twelve months, we have provided 1,273,375 kgs of fruit to our charity partners, schools and directly to households. This equates to 37% of our overall food distribution total.

We also collaborate with other organisations, offering assistance beyond food. Due to the big increase in the demand for our services, we now have a Financial Support Worker from the Financial Wellbeing Collective at the Perth Airport site to assist customers with their needs onsite, five days a week.

Whether in person, or over the phone, when individuals reach out for food assistance, the Financial Support Worker who assesses the individuals needs can also refer them to supportive services they require such as housing support, job training, financial counselling, and healthcare services.

By relieving the burden of food costs, we can help individuals redirect their limited financial resources toward other critical areas, such as healthcare, therapy, or even stress-reducing activities.

Mental Health Week reminds everyone that mental health is just as important as physical health and encourages proactive care for a healthier, happier life.

We are working hard to make food one less thing people need to worry about.

Superhero Foods HQ

Looking for fun, engaging and educational activities for the next school holidays and weekends? When parents think about allowing their kids into the kitchen, many think, mess and too much hard work, but we can support you to get your kids cooking, learn new skills and most of all have fun.

The Superhero Foods® HQ website is jam packed with great resources for teachers, parents and health professionals where you can find healthy, quick and affordable recipe ideas and recipe booklets, games for kids and even an interactive web app which makes healthy eating fun.

Cooking with kids allows children to express their creativity by experimenting with ingredients, and flavours, turning the kitchen into a fun and creative space. It can also boost their confidence – successfully preparing a meal or even a simple dish can give children a sense of accomplishment and boost their self-esteem.

Importantly, involving kids in cooking helps them learn about healthy foods, the importance of a balanced diet, and can make them more willing to try new or nutritious ingredients. Cooking together is also great way to bond with your kids, encouraging teamwork, communication, and spending quality time together during the holidays.

We have plenty of resources to keep little hands and minds busy, our Let’s Feed the Family book has great tips for getting kids started in the kitchen.

Engage your kids with healthy eating and see for yourself how boring broccoli can become fun “Mean Green” and a kiddy favourite, and a cob of corn can become super cool “King Corn”, visit the Superhero Foods® HQ website to see what other alter egos can transform eating habits, and help with dinner prep!

For a change of pace, Superhero Foods® HQ has some great games, printable activity sheets and an interactive web app to reinforce the importance of nutritional education.

By turning cooking into a shared activity during the holidays, you’re creating lasting memories while teaching important skills.

A microscopic tale of hunger, hormones and hope

Hunger Ghrelins Foodbank WA

You can’t see it, but you can feel it.

When we get hungry a hormone is produced by the body to let our brain know that we are hungry. This hormone is called ‘GHRELIN’ – aka the hunger hormone.

From plate to bin: the hidden impact of uneaten food

Food going into a bin. Food waste. Foodbank WA

Food waste is a huge problem in Australia with 7.6m tonnes of food wasted each year, which is approximately 312kg per person per year.

If you’ve ever cleaned out your fridge and found half-eaten leftovers or veggies that have seen better days, you’re not alone. Food waste is a common issue in many households, but it’s one that comes with a hidden cost— financially, socially and environmentally. Taking steps to reduce food waste at home can have a significant impact, not just on your budget, but on the broader community as well.

Reducing food waste isn’t just about doing the right thing for the environment – though that’s a big part of it. It’s also about making smart decisions and contributing to a stronger, more resilient community in Western Australia. By being more mindful of how we buy, store and consume foods, we can save money, help those in need, and build a better future for everyone.

Let’s talk dollars and cents. The cost of food isn’t just what you see at the checkout; it’s also in the waste that ends up in your bin. Every time you throw away food, you’re essentially throwing away money. Food waste can cost an average family of four in Australia $2,500 per year.

We have the answer. Foodbank WA’s nom! programs which teach evidence-based nutrition education and cooking.

We have always covered food waste and how best to avoid it in our nom! workshops but have recently had an increase in interest from local governments in running food waste and sustainability one-off sessions. We hear your call and are here to answer it!

Our sessions cover food waste and sustainability for families, youth and adults. The sessions, through various hands-on activities and cooking, will include:

  • Implementing strategies to reduce personal food waste such as meal planning, writing a shopping list, growing their own vegetables and herbs or limiting the use of ultra-processed foods by adopting a healthier eating lifestyle.
  • Learn to re-use, recycle and recover different products (i.e. use of own shopping bags and avoiding plastic bags, composting at home, using FOGO when possible)
  • Tips and tricks – Our cooking activities show participants how to use the whole vegetable (i.e. use the entire spring onion and plant the base with roots in soil. This will grow into a new spring onion).

Australia produces enough food to feed our population three times over, yet we still have too many people going without food. Our nom! programs show us how as individuals we can do our part. By planning meals more carefully, shopping with a list, and getting creative with leftovers, you can significantly reduce the amount of food you waste. This translates directly into savings.

So next time you think about throwing away those leftovers, think twice, you might just be throwing away more than you realise.

Bo-Anne’s story

Bo anne Foodbank WA customer

“It made a huge difference to us. I don’t even know where we’d be now.”

Bo-Anne isn’t your average homeowner. Sure, there’s the pride in her eyes as she surveys her freshly cleaned kitchen, but there’s something more – a warmth that reflects the journey that brought her here. It’s a journey paved with challenges, but also one where a helping hand from Foodbank WA made all the difference.

As a single mum of three, Bo-Anne’s world revolves around her children. But when her son, just 20 months old at the time, needed a kidney transplant, life took a dramatic turn. Caring for him became a full-time job, pushing career stability aside. The rising cost-of-living felt like a constant weight and food became a worry.

“I was real low,” Bo-Anne confesses. “These things were just taking their toll.”

A visit to Centrelink for rent relief led Bo-Anne to Foodbank WA. It wasn’t just the food that made a difference, it was a lifeline. “Obviously you have the overheads of your housing first so when you get to food, it slides down that scale of the level of importance. It’s so hard because you have to make choices about what your kids are eating”. By easing the pressure of food costs, Bo-Anne could start to think about solutions.

That solution came in the form of a single parent homeowner’s grant. With Foodbank’s support and the security of a home, her life began to transform. No longer burdened by high rents, she could finally focus on building a brighter future for her children.

“It made a huge difference to us. I don’t even know where we’d be now,” Bo-Anne says with gratitude. “Foodbank gives you that ability to still give your kids healthy meals without sacrificing being able to pay your other bills.”

Bo-Anne’s story isn’t just about overcoming challenges, it’s about the power of community connections. She also credits the Byford Community Centre, one of our charity partners and another vital piece of the support system she found. “They offer food hampers for a gold-coin donation, they help quite a lot. Quite a bit of the food they provide comes from Foodbank and community donations.”

Looking back, Bo-Anne’s advice is clear: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s not embarrassing. There’s nothing to be ashamed of. The world’s a tough place.”

Today she stands proudly in her own home, a testament to her strength and the power of a helping hand. Looking back at her sparkling kitchen, it’s hard to imagine the struggles she faced. Foodbank, along with our state-wide network, played a vital role in helping her build a secure and nourishing future for her family.

Together, we can build a future where every Western Australian family thrives. Let’s ensure success stories like Bo-Anne’s become the norm, not the exception.

Costa mushrooms
you mean so mush to us

Costa mushroom donation. Foodbank WA

We are always excited to set up ongoing scheduled donations, which help us to remove the “Surprise” from our Supply Chain.

Our latest program is our Mushroom Program, partnering with Costa Mushrooms, who have been regularly donating mushrooms to Foodbank WA since the beginning of the year.

The story of Costa dates back to 1895 when an Italian wine producer migrated to Australia. Over the decades, the business has expanded significantly and is now Australia’s leading grower and marketer of fresh fruits and vegetables. Costa manages over 7,200 hectares of farmland, 40 hectares of glasshouses, and three major mushroom growing facilities across Australia.

The company operates in five core categories: berries, mushrooms, citrus, glasshouse-grown tomatoes, and avocados. They supply quality produce to all major Australian supermarket chains, independent grocers, and various food industry stakeholders.

The Mushroom team employs over 1,200 people nationwide from diverse backgrounds, offering a range of broad and specialised roles. They ensure that farm-fresh mushrooms are delivered within 24 hours of harvest, providing access to fresh, quality mushrooms year-round. In Casuarina, Costa employs up to 300 people from the local community, delivering freshly harvested mushrooms daily to customers.

Big shout out to the WA mushroom team, we have been receiving great donations from Costa.

Mushrooms are incredibly popular at Foodbank and quickly disappear when donated.

“Mushrooms have numerous health benefits and may help to support a healthy immune system, particularly in the winter months,” says Teresa Wu, Sales Manager at Costa.

“Mushrooms are good for you because they offer many health benefits. They are low in calories, cholesterol, and sodium, and are a good source of vitamins and minerals. They are a great addition to any diet,” says Jessica Toth, State Operations Manager WA at Costa.
