Teamwork
The heart of volunteering

Volunteering at Foodbank and the nature of our work means that teamwork isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s essential.
Whether you’re packing hampers, stocking shelves, or greeting customers at the front desk, every role contributes to a much larger effort. And when we work together well, that impact multiplies.
Teamwork leads to a shared purpose and stronger motivation. Knowing you are part of something bigger helps to give meaning to every task, no matter how small it may seem.
By the same token, good communication and collaboration mean tasks are completed more efficiently, safely and enjoyably.
Working together and the connection this creates has a positive impact on wellbeing – volunteering alongside a supportive team builds community, something just as important for volunteers as it is for the people we serve.
Here are some great tips for great teamwork:
- Check in, not just clock in – a simple “How’s your day going?” can go a long way.
- Offer help when you’ve got capacity – Lending a hand lifts everyone.
- Be curious, not critical – every volunteer has a different story, skill set and style. That’s what makes a team dynamic.
As we reflect on NAIDOC Week and the importance of shared stories and collective strength, it’s a timely reminder that collaboration – grounded in respect – is at the core of real community.
