From FOOD Cent$ to nom!

Foodbank WA’s mission has always been about more than just filling plates in times of crisis.

In 1994, our very first warehouse opened its doors and within months hundreds of tonnes of food were being distributed to local charities.

Foodbank WA’s mission has always been about more than just filling plates in times of crisis. In 1994, our very first warehouse opened its doors and within months hundreds of tonnes of food were being distributed to local charities.

But a crucial question emerged: how could we empower individuals and families to make healthy choices long after receiving emergency food relief?

And so, our nutrition education programs were born.

We believe great dishes can be made by anyone – not just Michelin Star chefs. We all have the potential to create great things – and nom! is here to help you unleash that potential. Bringing nutrition education and cooking programs to Western Australia – it’s something we’ve been doing for a little while now.

The FOOD Cent$ program

In 1995, we sowed the seeds of a new groundbreaking program. FOOD Cent$, a pilot initiative, aimed to equip people with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate a healthy diet on a tight budget. This wasn’t just about handing out food; it was about building a bridge out of poverty by fostering long-term wellbeing.

A legacy of empowering choices

FOOD Cent$’ success marked a pivotal moment in our journey, reflecting a commitment that extends beyond immediate needs. The program has changed and adapted over the years to include Food Sensations (for Adults, Parents, Children and Schools) and Healthy Food for All Abilities.

Today we offer wide range of nutrition education and cooking programs, under our nom! brand empowering people of all ages, backgrounds and locations – metro or regional – to make healthy choices and build a brighter future, one meal at a time.

The art of saving

perfectly good food

Every year, millions of tonnes of food are wasted.

This is how we help get meals to those who need it most.

But thanks to our great partnerships with amazing donors such as growers, supermarkets and the wonderful people at Perth Markets we are rescuing food that might otherwise be wasted and destined for landfill. Those “funny-looking” tomatoes or “too-small” avocados – food that’s perfectly good but not quite supermarket shelf-worthy.

This is how we help get meals to those who need it most.

Our story starts with strong relationships. Supermarkets with a surplus, farms with “ugly” but incredibly nutritious produce, even kind-hearted neighbours with a bumper crop – all donate their perfectly good but maybe not-so-perfect-looking food to Foodbank.

From growers to Foodbank

Every morning, we are on the frontlines at Perth Markets rescuing fresh fruit and vegetables.

With over 50 wholesalers, five regular donors and a handful of donors who give when they can, the Perth Markets play a key role in helping us connect with growers and rescuing their produce. Every day, we average six pallets – bananas, cauliflower, broccoli, apples – you name it. Mondays are extra special, as we scoop up what hasn’t found a home after the weekend markets.

But it doesn’t stop there. 169 kilometres south of Perth, our dedicated volunteers in Bunbury make weekly trips to pick up excess produce directly from growers in the South West, ensuring nothing goes to waste.

Once at Foodbank food and groceries are sorted with care, ensuring everything is fresh and ready for its next chapter.

Some items are displayed on our shop floors, perfect for families on a tight budget. Others are packed into Mobile Foodbank hampers, delivered straight to communities in need. And anything left over? Sent straight to our Community Kitchen to be made into a delicious and nutritious meal.

We’re smart about sustainability too. A clever cycling system gets our collection tubs back to suppliers and growers quickly, and a waste station partnership helps us responsibly discard any unsuitable items.

Giving produce a third fourth life

Our Community Kitchen isn’t just about delicious ready-made meals, it’s about fighting waste. Our Chef and crew of volunteers transform soon-to-expire ingredients into nutritious and delicious meals. These meals are distributed through our branches, Mobile Foodbank and charity partners, reaching those who need them most.

Our network is about much more than just feeding people. We’re passionate about protecting our environment too. Thanks to our Community Kitchen, we’ve slashed our food waste from 11% to just 4%.

So, what happens to that 4%? Well, even that gets a new lease on life. Unusable food scraps are donated to Richgro where they become valuable fertiliser, nourishing the soil and completing the circle of life.

By minimising waste, we’re helping to create a more sustainable future for all.

Join us in feeding change

Want to be part of the story? Learn how you can volunteer, donate or even share some perfectly good “wonky” produce. Because at Foodbank, we believe that good food belongs on plates, not in landfills.

Megan’s Story – How our Mobile Foodbank Helped Feed her Family

Stuart’s
volunteer story

“It’s not just a job. It’s about being part of something bigger.”

Five years ago, Stuart traded his social work hat for a Foodbank volunteer badge. He craved purpose during retirement and found it in familiar territory – helping others.

“I actually started volunteering with the Mobile Foodbank back when it was just this little old ute with a freezer box on the back,” Stuart chuckled. “It’s definitely come a long way since then.”

What really keeps Stuart coming back is the social interaction and strong team spirit:

“I really enjoy coming to work here. It’s a great team environment and a chance to not only be part of a team and have great social interactions, but a way of giving back. It has a feel-good factor about it.”

He loves the autonomy of working on our Mobile Foodbank – just him, the customer, and his work skills in practice.

But really, it’s the sense of purpose that keeps him engaged. “It’s not just a job. It’s about being part of something bigger.”

“Before I came here, I was a social worker helping men transition from prison. Purpose and a sense of belonging were key for them. I really felt that when I retired from management. One day you’re a boss and have a team, the next you’re at home. Volunteering gave me a new purpose.”

Leah’s story

You hear stories about life turning upside down in an instant. Leah doesn’t just hear about it; she lives it.

A motorcycle accident ripped her husband Steve from work, leaving him with a brain injury and their family in financial freefall. Medical bills mounted, the family business folded, and hungry mouths loomed.

“We found ourselves in a perilous position of not meeting our bills, let alone putting food on the table,” Leah said.

Juggling finances was a tightrope Leah already walked with practiced steps. Caring for her two sons, the household budget, like many around the state, was always a balancing act. Add constant medical bills to support her son with level two autism and a chronic illness, and Leah was running out of options.

“I suddenly became acutely aware of the price of food and how easily those prices can bring on anxiety attacks,” she said.

Asking for help was daunting but a kind stranger’s words pointed her towards Foodbank WA.

“I was full of pride that I could fend for myself,” said Leah. “A lovely person heard my ideas and said, we are all individuals and not to compare. If I needed help, just reach out. So I did, and I have no regrets. My family are no longer suffering in silence and I appreciate every week that I can go to Foodbank.”

The weekly hampers weren’t just food; they were survival kits:

“I now stop missing meals in order to feed my family. I have a vehicle that is registered because I had money to pay the registration so my husband can be taken to rehabilitation and my son to Fiona Stanley Hospital for appointments. Without accessing Foodbank, I would be unable to put food on the table or to pay my other utilities.”

Leah’s story is a powerful reminder that vulnerability is not weakness but a pathway to hope. The next time you see a Mobile Foodbank or hear about a local food drive, remember Leah. Remember the quiet victories made possible by the kindness of strangers.

Every day we help families like Leah’s.

Your generous donation can help ensure we continue support families across Western Australia.
