Ray’s
volunteer story

I like volunteering because I get to meet people, I help return things to the community, and it’s part of my life.

At 79 years young, Ray Jordan has been an embodiment of unwavering dedication to his community, proving that age is just a number when it comes to making a difference. For most of his life, Ray has been a shining example of the power of volunteering, leaving an indelible mark on every place he’s called home. Now, we’re proud to share that Ray has been recognised as South West Volunteer of the Year in 2022.

Ray’s journey of service began four decades ago in Kalgoorlie, where he selflessly lent his time to both the Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Boy Scouts. The scorching Australian outback was no match for Ray’s fiery spirit as he courageously battled blazes and mentored young scouts.

But this was only the start of his volunteering journey. In Esperance, Ray’s dedication spanned an impressive 21 years as the foundation’s secretary at the Esperance Volunteer Fire Brigade. During this time, he played a crucial role in the smooth operation of the organisation and was honoured with a National Service Medal from the government for his service.

His next adventure led him to Bunbury, where he joined the Foodbank Bunbury during its inception. Ray quickly became an integral part of the organisation and today, he’s the driving force behind the region’s school breakfast program, ensuring that no child in the South West goes to school hungry.

With a heart full of compassion and a backpack filled with breakfasts, Ray coordinates breakfast for an impressive 63 schools, from Waroona to Augusta, spanning the South West and Collie, as well as the local schools in Bunbury.

Reflecting on his journey, Ray shared, “I thought when I retired I’d sit home all day and do nothing, but that just doesn’t work. You have to get out amongst the community; otherwise, you become a couch potato.” His words are a reminder that life’s true fulfillment comes from being active, engaged, and making a positive impact on the lives of others.

In Bunbury, our branch knows that their success wouldn’t be possible without champions like Ray Jordan. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and unwavering commitment to his community will continue to inspire us all to be better, to do more, and to give selflessly.

And it’s not just about Ray; it’s about the power of collaboration and support from organisations like South 32, who have been steadfast partners in our mission for years, helping Foodbank Bunbury achieve remarkable outcomes.

We are believers on Act, Belong, Commit volunteering is a great way to be active in our community

Amanda’s story

At Foodbank WA, we often say that our greatest strength lies in our people

“Working at Foodbank WA?” Amanda leans in, her eyes brimming with excitement, “It’s incredibly rewarding. It’s honestly the best job I’ve ever had.” But it’s not just about the warm fuzzies; it’s the satisfaction of making a real difference.

From setbacks to success

Amanda’s journey to us is far from conventional. For 30 years, she was a skilled hairdresser, bringing joy to her community through her craft. But she wanted to do more, especially after some time in prison. “This is different,” she says, “it’s giving back to my community in a productive way. It’s good for my soul.”

Emerging from prison, she faced the challenge of finding her feet once again. And to make things even more difficult, she’d just battled cancer. Tough? You bet. But so is Amanda.

Reflecting on her journey, Amanda candidly shares her initial fears of re-entering the workforce after her time in prison;

“When I was in prison, I struggled to think of how I was going get a job and what I was going to do. With the cancer, I had no hair at that point and didn’t feel confident to return to hairdressing. I wanted to find a job that would accept me and I thought “who’s going to do that?” I didn’t want them to look at me differently, and Foodbank hasn’t.”

This isn’t just a job; it’s a mission. Amanda’s role began in May and she admits to starting with little knowledge of warehousing. “I knew nothing about anything,” she laughs. But she has embraced the learning curve with enthusiasm.

“I think something was just calling me to work here,” she shares with a grin. And that something is the sense of purpose that fuels her every day. “Who cares if I’m tired?” she quips, “Every day, the work I’m doing means more families can put food on their tables that night and that’s all that matters.”

Amanda doesn’t see this as just a job, it’s a profound commitment. “When I was diagnosed, I thought to myself that if this was it, I haven’t done what I wanted to do in this world and I want to give back so much more than I have. I felt that for such a long time I was helping the wrong people and I want to help the right people, the people who really need it, and this is the right place to do it.”

“At Foodbank WA, we often say that our greatest strength lies in our people,” shared Kate O’Hara, CEO of Foodbank WA. “Amanda’s journey perfectly illustrates this. Her unwavering commitment to our cause, despite facing significant personal challenges, is a shining example of what it means to be part of our Foodbank family. We’re honoured to have her with us.”

Amanda’s story is a poignant reminder that working for a non-profit organisation like Foodbank is not just a job; it’s a purpose, a community, and the opportunity to make a real impact, even when life throws its curveballs. It’s about making a meaningful difference, even when faced with personal challenges.

Joe’s
volunteer story

I know I’m one of the lucky ones to be able to volunteer and help others.

There are few people who are more passionate about volunteering with us than Joe. A warehouse favourite, Joe was recently recognised during National Volunteer Week for his incredible five-year contribution to Foodbank and we simply don’t know what we’d do without him.

Five years ago, Joe was looking for opportunities to make a difference in his community when he came across Foodbank and knew he had to help. Now, you’ll find him on our shop floor every week, ensuring product is always ready for our shoppers.

When he’s not unpacking and sorting deliveries, Joe is ensuring our shelves are fully stocked and offering a friendly face to all our visitors on the shop floor.

“I love volunteering here. The staff and volunteers are so warm and friendly, and it’s fulfilling getting to help someone else.”

Always ready to respond

We’re making sure we have emergency relief hampers ready for distribution

In times of a natural disaster like bushfires, floods or cyclones, worrying about where your next meal will come from is the last thing anyone should have to do. That’s why we’re always prepared to distribute emergency relief hampers to those who need them most.

Behind every emergency relief hamper is a finely orchestrated logistics process that ensures they are swiftly packed, loaded onto trucks, and distributed to those in need. We owe it all to our dedicated volunteers and fantastic distribution and logistics partners, who work together to make it happen.

We truly believe in the power of collaboration – we couldn’t do what we do without it – so in times of crisis, we work with Foodbank Australia through our national partnership to source key emergency relief products. This allows us to tap into a national network of large-scale suppliers, who send their products from the Eastern States for redistribution. As soon as the products are ready to go, they embark on their epic journey across the Nullarbor to reach our Perth warehouse, where we prepare them for delivery to communities in need.

Every step of the way, we ensure that our products are meticulously unpacked, weighed, and prepared for redistribution. We want to make sure that each and every hamper is filled with care and thought, providing the nourishment and support that our communities need during tough times.

Once the hampers are ready to go, it’s time for our distribution and logistics partners to step in. They play a crucial role in ensuring that the hampers reach as close as possible to the areas where the need is greatest. Sometimes conventional transportation just isn’t feasible, but that doesn’t deter us. We collaborate with local emergency services and community resource centres, even using helicopters or boats, if necessary, to ensure that the hampers reach those who need them the most.

The impact of an emergency hamper relief is profound. It’s more than just food in a box – it’s a symbol of hope and solidarity. With every hamper is a heartfelt promise to stand with our communities in their time of need and bring nourishment, comfort and hope.

It’s true that we can never predict what natural disaster might be just around the corner, but one thing is for sure – we’ll be ready for whatever comes our way. With a certain amount of pre-packed hampers stockpiled and warehoused, we’re here to respond swiftly to any emergency.

Nourishing communities
one stop at a time

How our Mobile Foodbank supports suburbs in need

Driving the streets of Perth, you’ll find a silent hero offering food relief to those who need it most. Welcome to the world of our Mobile Foodbank, where an ordinary van transforms into a lifeline for those struggling to put food on the table.

Not all heroes wear capes. Ours is purple and has four wheels.

Launched in 2019, our Mobile Foodbank is a lifeline for those facing food insecurity in our suburbs.

Welcome to a day in the life of our Mobile Foodbank. Every day this essential service embarks on a journey across Perth, weaving through neighbourhoods and communities as it spreads nourishment and hope to those facing food stress.

The reality is that not everyone can make it to our Perth Airport branch, but we don’t believe that means they should go without. We made it our mission to bring nourishment and hope to them.

We are shining a light on our unsung hero operated largely by our volunteers and so want to share with you a day in the life of our Mobile Foodbank.

At the start of each day, we conduct our vehicle safety checks to ensure our volunteers and staff can confidently deliver food hampers to our customers, before loading the freezer and van with the day’s stock. We review new customer paperwork to ensure all new referrals are included so no one is left behind.

Our Mobile Foodbank locations are carefully chosen to be co-located with our charity partners. This way, if anyone turns up without a referral, they won’t be turned away without food. We believe that everyone deserves access to nourishing food, and we’re here to lend a helping hand to all.

The demand for our Mobile Foodbank is soaring, and we’re working hard to meet it. Attendance at our stops is rapidly expanding. We’re introducing new routes and revising old ones to ensure that no one misses out on the nourishment they require. Sometimes, the demand is so high that there’s no stock left, and we have to change dates for some routes. But we do it all to make sure that no one goes without.

From our initial launch in 2019 with just four locations, we now visit 30 locations weekly in the Perth metro area, spanning from Rockingham in the south to Two Rocks in the north. And we visit 21 locations regionally from our regional branches.

Our Mobile Foodbank sites are truly special. Often, they’re shared with other not-for-profit organisations like the Street Doctor, Orange Sky Australia, and the Freo Doctor. Together, we create a hub of accessible services, a safe space of support for those who need it most.

Mobile Foodbanks stock a wide variety of hampers, regularly providing frozen items, dry food hampers – which contain pantry staple items such as baked beans, rice, pasta and long life milk (to name a few) – and fresh fruit and vegetable hampers at a very low cost. Our Mobile Foodbanks also carry a variety of other packs, such a beverage packs (coffee and tea), cleaning packs and all sorts of other products that we’re privilege to be able to distribute.

Megan’s Story – How our Mobile Foodbank Helped Feed her Family

Martin’s  volunteer story

It’s a few hours each week where you get to put someone else first.

When Martin isn’t soaring through the skies as a pilot, you’ll find him dedicating his time and energy to volunteering at Foodbank WA. For the past three and a half years, Martin has become a customer-favourite in our Perth warehouse, creating a warm and welcoming space for our staff, volunteers, and customers alike.

His passion for volunteering traces back to his school days, but it wasn’t until Martin discovered Foodbank that he found a true sense of belonging. “Foodbank has become more than just a place to give back,” he shared. “It’s a community I love.”

When asked about what keeps him coming back each week, Martin simply states, “It’s the feeling of doing something nice once a week for other people and making it a part of your weekly routine.” By incorporating volunteering into his regular schedule, he experiences the personal fulfillment that comes from making a positive impact in the lives of others.

Customer interaction and building relationships with regulars are aspects of volunteering that Martin particularly treasures. Through genuine conversations and moments of connection, he witnesses firsthand the positive impact a single person can have on the lives of others.

Martin enthusiastically encourages others considering volunteering at Foodbank, saying, “It’s the sense of community. The staff are wonderful, and everyone is friendly.” He believes that Foodbank offers a unique opportunity to break away from the everyday routine and engage in something truly meaningful.

Martin’s commitment and selflessness serve as an inspiration to us all. Through his genuine care and dedication, he infuses our warehouse with a strong sense of community and compassion, creating a ripple effect of positivity in the lives of those he serves. As Martin wisely puts it, “Taking time out to help others matters.” We are incredibly grateful to have Martin as a shining example of the incredible impact one person can make.

Ollie’s
volunteer story

A volunteer role can be easy to fit into, there’s no hard expectation of excellence or perfection, just a do your best attitude and all feedback is a bonus.

When Ollie joined us in December 2022, it’s safe to say Ollie was dropped in the ‘deep end.’

Day one for her was one of the last shopping days ahead of Christmas. It was a day of revolving queues of new and existing customers all needing assistance before they could go shopping.

Luckily, the festive season shopping panic didn’t deter her and some training in the New Year gave her the basic policy and procedures knowledge to keep her with us. Now Ollie is supported by the regular staff to learn and gain confidence every day.

Ollie has quickly become very valued in the office, fast becoming an all-rounder. Sometimes on frontdesk duty processing customer queries and registrations, other times you can find her tucked away in a corner, focused on the one job of motoring through Mobile Foodbank customer registrations.

For Ollie, her experience volunteering has been a very positive one. “Great! Love it! From the minute I arrived I felt welcomed and included. It makes me feel good to share the workload, do the mundane jobs to allow staff to catch up on other projects. I am often out loud appreciated and showered with praise.”

She loves that it’s an opportunity to learn something new or regain an old skill, make new friends, and be a cog in a bigger wheel in order to make things happen.

Since Ollie joined us six months ago, she has seen an increase in customer numbers, commenting that Thursday in particular feels like the peak Christmas period. She adds that we see such a broader spectrum of the community.

Ollie sees Foodbank supporting a really diverse customer base currently and expects this to continue for a few years yet. And now that she’s joined us as a member of staff, Ollie will continue to be there for those doing it tough for a while yet. We’re thankful to Ollie for all of her support as a volunteer and now as a member of staff.

We are so grateful to our volunteers for how they bring so much positivity, passion and heart to everything that they do.

Tips to tackle  cost of living

Here are some great tips to save money at the check-out.

Meal planning goes a very long way in saving time and money, makes shopping easier, minimises impulse eating and takeaway, promotes healthier food choices and ensures food variety, reduces stress.

Buy a meal planner

Money saving tips and meal planning on a budget

Buy supermarket or home brand products and limit pre-prepared and convenience foods: e.g., grated cheese or sliced mushrooms as they are usually more expensive. Instead, buy a block of cheese and grate it or chop the mushrooms yourself to save money.

Where possible, buy fresh produce when in season: especially fruit and vegetables – local, fresher and cheaper. Farmers Markets are great for this.

Remember to include canned and frozen foods – a much cheaper alternative to fresh produce, especially if fruit and veg are out of season. You can also include beans/legumes to bulk out meat dishes to lower the price per serve or as a cheap meat-free meal.

Don’t be afraid to shop reduced items, look out for ‘reduced to clear’ stickers, but make sure you freeze or eat before the use by date.

Always look to freeze leftovers or excess produce or swap meals with friends or neighbours to increase variety!

Meal planning goes a very long way in saving time and money, makes shopping easier, minimises impulse eating and takeaway, promotes healthier food choices and ensures food variety, reduces stress.

Our four big tips for meal planning are:

Stock take: check what you already have in your pantry, fridge and freezer (to avoid buying more of what you already have, and to plan meals around what ingredients need using up)

Plan: create a meal plan for family meals/meals on the go (use the internet, Foodbank recipes, borrow recipe books from the library for inspiration on what to cook, if you are tired of cooking the same things). If meal planning for multiple days/meals, think about how you can use some ingredients in different meals if there may be excess.

List:  create a shopping list ensuring to include all 5 food groups (we recommend ordering your shopping list by food groups, as these foods are often grouped together in the supermarket, and it also helps you to see what food groups you might be missing!)

Shop smart: stick to the list, don’t go hunger, shop around the perimeter of the shop & only go down the aisles you need, shop online. Compare unit prices to select better value for money.

Meal planning doesn’t have to be strict or boring. Don’t forget snacks in your shopping list meal plan- if you include these in your meal plan and have them on hand, you may be less likely to reach for the more expensive and less healthy options.

If you can, dedicate one block of time a week to do some bulk cooking or food preparation (e.g. grating cheese, making freezer meals, chopping vegies) to save yourself time on the busier days.

Meal planning doesn’t have to be for every meal, every day of the week. Even just meal planning for your cooked meals can help save money by only buying what you need, reducing food waste, and reducing the likelihood of buying fast food.

The best days for meal planning are those where you have routine, as these are the days you may be less spontaneous with eating and more likely to stick to your plan! Big tip – meal plan for work days rather than non-work days.

Helping shape communities
with BHP

The impact of more than a decade in the Pilbara.

After more than a decade in the Pilbara, the BHP funded nutrition education programs comes to an end in June 2023.

Following the inception of the Pilbara Strategy at Foodbank WA, the Pilbara Pilot undertaken in 2010 clearly showed a need for our services. Becoming fully funded by BHP in 2011, we were able to roll-out much needed nutrition education programs which were invaluable for participants and much appreciated by service providers.

The funding saw us build long-standing relationships in the region and led to many advocates who valued our contributions, leading to a very successful 12-year partnership which included the wrap-around service of the School Breakfast Program.

Jessica is one partner who has been involved with us since the pilot program.

Jessica has a background in Aboriginal Education in regional and remote settings, in primary schools and high schools, from Kindergarten through to Year 12. She has worked in community and adult education, parents’ groups and post-work pathways in Pilbara regional and remote areas such as Yandeyarra Community for ten years. While in Yandeyarra, she supported and lead activities for all community groups.

Yandeyarra Remote Community School was one of the first schools that we partnered with, back in 2010.

Some of Jessica’s most valued memories include the parents program with mums who had gone through all of our programs growing up, and now were bringing their own children. A great example of the intergenerational impact of our programs. She recalls that we engaged with men in Yandeyarra who did pastoral work – highlighting our holistic approach by engaging the wider community.

Jessica worked closely with us building a strong working relationship to forge positive outcomes in school children, parents and adults. She also helped upskill school staff to be able to provide ongoing consistency of skills and knowledge in between our visits. She said they would work together during term to keep skills, interest, awareness and knowledge maintained so that when we returned, they could build on those skills further, rather than having to recap upon our return.

Jessica enjoyed the diversity and tailoring to the groups of our Food Sensations for Schools, Fuel Your Future and Learn. Cook. Share. for Youth programs.

The 12-year partnership has had real impact, reaching parents groups, schools and youth in addition to engaging community through other events or community related sessions.

Much of the positive impact is attributed to hands-on learning, in regional but particularly in remote settings. The programs were tailored to each group to ensure the right level of literacy, ensure participants could read the recipes, figure out what they need to, and use their hands to prepare dishes that they were proud of. The tangible outcomes were easy to see and the instantaneous feedback was that the programs offer really rich and authentic learning opportunities and outstanding high quality resources.

We are thankful to BHP for their long-term funding and helping us to make a lasting impact where it really matters. Foodbank, or the ‘Purple Shirts’ as we came to be known in Yandeyarra, were known to provide consistent delivery, multiple times a year, come rain, hail or shine. We were there and the kids remembered us. We couldn’t ask for more than that.
