Community Partner Story Open Hands Community Care

Open Hands Community Care’s Neighbourhood Marketplace began in 2020 as a family-led initiative with a simple but powerful mission: to provide affordable groceries and a sense of community to those in need. Today, they serve over 650 households a week, offering a welcoming space where people can access essential food items, support and connection.

Their pantry, open Tuesday to Saturday, is stocked with pantry staples, fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, bakery items and more. Families travel from the Gold Coast and beyond, drawn by the affordable prices – 50 to 70% off retail – but more than that, the warmth of the people behind the counter. Sherifaye, Managing Director of Open Hands Community Care shares “families are always looking for vegetables, bread and milk,” staples they always try to stock for the community. Most find Open Hands Community Care through word of mouth, a testament to the trust and appreciation they have built within the community.

Open Hands Community Care has become a lifeline for many, Managing Director, Operations and Finance, Sherifaye, with the support of her family and Mum and Dad (Founders, who personally pick up the fresh produce from Foodbank Queensland!), work to personally connect with their community. The families and individuals they serve are diverse – migrants, refugees, elderly individuals, those with disabilities and even dual-income households facing financial hardship for the first time.

“We have also got two income households also receiving support now. They are experiencing hardship for the first time, thinking, what do we do?” says Sherifaye. They have created a welcoming space where support can be accessed by anyone facing hardships. They are intentional about meeting the needs of their multicultural community, working with local grocers to stock culturally important foods such as cassava and taro.

When recent severe weather impacted the community, Open Hands Community Care stepped up, packing 500 hampers with support and funding from the Lord Mayor, highlighting their personal approach to helping families in their local area. “Everyone needs a hand up at some point in time,” says Sherifaye. “As long as you need help, we are here to help.”

Recognising the growing need for connection, Open Hands Community Care also hosts a weekly Hug-A-Mug Morning Tea every Friday from 10am to 12pm. They set up tables and chairs, creating a space for people to share stories and form friendships.

“We noticed that most elderly people that come through, this is their connection. When they come through, they are talking and telling you about their week, their month. And we thought, let’s sit and actually share and have that connection,” Sherifaye explains.

Beyond providing food relief, Open Hands Community Care fosters a sense of belonging. One such story is of volunteers Barbra and Skip. “They live in the area and accessed our pantry for the first time in October 2021, but Skip is visually impaired, so he’d never come out of the car. And then one day we struck a connection to get him out of the car, and then he started navigating his way around. A month later, he said ’I want to volunteer and 3 and a half years later, they’re still with us.’”

Open Hands Community Care envisions an even bigger impact, with plans to expand into a community hub with access to further resources. They already host events every few months to bring families together and strengthen the support networks they have built.

The impact of their work is reflected in the gratitude of those they help. Community members come through and share with the Open Hands Community Care family, “We were down, you guys helped us with food and support, thank you,” Sherifaye shares. “It is knowing there is someone here to listen, to lend a hand.”

For those seeking a helping hand or a place to belong, Open Hands Community Care stands ready. As Sherifaye warmly invites, “come on through, we are open for everyone.”

Foodbank Agency Pantry Project

The Foodbank Agency Pantry has been a project we have been working on behind the scenes for some time now.

The initiative is a response to the cost-of-living crisis which is placing immense pressure on communities – we acknowledge the increasing demand for essential food items, and want to make access to bulk essential food items easier and to provide a more robust offering.

To help support this additional need across community, we are looking to see how we can better support agencies by building capacity across the food relief network in Western Australia. This has including reviewing our operations and services.

The Foodbank Agency Pantry will give you, our partners, access to a range of in-demand pantry products at a reduced cost, helping you to get more from sometimes very limited budgets, to help support your own food relief services.

Currently the Foodbank Agency Pantry program has 29 products which include staples such as peanut butter, plain and self-raising flour, oats, tuna in spring water, a variety of canned vegetables SPC Spaghetti and baked beans, penne pasta and long-life milk, just to name a few.

These products are now available to purchase in bulk with reduced pricing, usually 10-20% under the recommended retail price, and where possible, many are below our in-branch pricing.

Orders can be placed weekly using an order form available by contacting Candice.

Pricing is excluding delivery, but we have several different options, including a click and collect model, which we can discuss with you.

Earlier this year we sent out an expression of interest where we looked to understand which of the 29 products in our core range you found were essential and also listed a range of non-core products, which has previously been requested by some agencies.

In 2026, we hope to extend the Foodbank Agency Pantry range, with consideration of your feedback, and hope to increase the range of 29 core products to many more, which will be available via the Foodbank Agency Pantry ordering process.

We want to thank those of you who responded, your feedback will help us to understand your interest and support.

We are currently reviewing your responses and hope to report back to you with our findings and recommendations in our next newsletter.

In the meantime, if you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact candice.long@foodbankwa.org.au.

Community Partner Story Champions Church

Champions Church is more than just a place of support – it’s a lifeline for the Redlands community. At its heart is a simple yet powerful philosophy: a hand up, not a handout.

The service has grown dramatically in the past 18 months. “We have quadrupled in the last 18 months, and even since this time last year to now, our clientele has doubled,” says Grant, Senior Pastor at Champions Church. As the cost of living rises, more people than ever – including young families – are turning to Champions Church for help.

“For so long we were servicing the pension age. What we have seen in the last 12 months is a switch, more young families coming through,” Brendan, Food Relief Manager at Champions Church explains.

The impact of Champions Church extends far beyond its gates. The team visits Foodbank Queensland four times a week to keep shelves stocked and ensure no one in the community goes without. In response to the recent ex-tropical cyclone that caused flooding and power outages, they distributed over 130 emergency hampers to community members in need.

They also support Redlands Special School, providing 60 FareShare meals every week to students in need. The community reach is vast, with people travelling from Russell Island, Redlands and even Beaudesert to find support, meals and connections.

One of the most striking aspects of Champions Church is the commitment to treating everyone with dignity and care. They extend a helping hand as far as they can to provide support to their community, old and new. “We had one gentleman, just recently out of incarceration, walk in and said, ‘I’ve got $5 to my name, what can you do for me?’ He walked out with a massive trolley, and that’s why we do what we do. That’s what we exist to do,” Brendan shares.

As the need continues to grow, Champions Church is working alongside the community and local governments to expand its facilities. Their vision is to provide not just food, but counselling services and spaces where people can gather, connect and support one another. Brendan said simply, “We just want to help more people.”

Steve, a dedicated volunteer, sees firsthand how the community is changing. “We see two to three new families come in most weeks, mostly through word of mouth.” He’s also noticed a shift in who is seeking help. “First off, it was those driving old bombs. This is all they could afford. As the cost-of-living pressure has gone up, we’ve had some come in Mercedes. That’s the car they’ve had for years.” He adds, “and so they come in, and we have got to reassure them that what is here is for them. It’s for everyone.”

Many of those who come through Champions Church are learning how to stretch their resources. “A lot of them are coming through and working out how to make the food spread further,” Steve shares. And for many, just having a place to turn to makes all the difference. “Some of them come in and say, ‘I’m so thankful you’re here.’ Wow. We are just providing a service for you.”

At its core, Champions Church is about more than food – it’s about community, dignity and care. Whether through a bag of groceries, a shared meal or a simple conversation over coffee, they continue to lift people up, one act of kindness at a time.

Celebrating the animals who bring us joy – and the people who care for them

Blog post header BARC x FBNA 1200x400px

At Foodbank NSW & ACT, our mission is simple: we are here to make sure that no one goes without food. Every day, we work tirelessly to provide essential support to individuals and families facing food insecurity. But over the years, we’ve noticed something heartbreaking.

Many of those who struggle to put food on their own tables continue to put the needs of their pets first.

Ensuring their furry companions are fed before themselves. It’s a beautiful testament to the bond between humans and animals, but the reality is, no one should have to go without food to ensure their pets can eat.

Thats why we choose to support organisations like the Blacktown Animal Rehoming Centre (BARC), who work tirelessly to care for animals in need.

Located in Glendenning, BARC provides shelter to 135 dogs and 230 cats from several Sydney councils, covering a wide geographic area. It’s a vital part of the community, not only offering a safe space for rescued animals but also serving as a place where people can visit and adopt pets. The team at BARC is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating animals, and their efforts make a real difference in the lives of both the animals and the people who adopt them.

BARC Blog image 400x300px

Cat Blog image 400x300px

Over the years, our relationship with BARC has grown, and, we’ve been able to donate a variety of essential supplies to help support their mission.

From cat food and dog food to dog dental chews, shampoos, and worming tablets, we ensure that these rescued animals have everything they need to thrive while waiting for their forever homes. We’ve even donated cat towers and toys to keep them active and happy.

In just the past few months alone, our donations have totalled over 5,000 kgs of food and supplies for the animals in their care.

It’s incredible to see how these contributions have made a tangible impact, ensuring that BARC can continue to provide the highest level of care for their animals.

Today, on National Pet Day, we want to take a moment to celebrate not just the amazing animals who bring joy to our lives, but also the incredible people in our community who make sure these animals are well cared for.

Whether it’s the volunteers at BARC, our incredible suppliers and donors who donate pet supplies, or the generous supporters like you, we’re all part of a larger effort to ensure that our furry friends receive the love and care they deserve.

We’re proud to stand alongside organisations like BARC to ensure that both people and their pets don’t go without. On this special day, let’s continue to raise awareness about the importance of looking after both people and pets.

Shane’s story

“We’ve always done fairly well, you know, at least average, financially, and we have never been in this kind of position.”

“We give to a lot of charities as well. We never thought that we’d have to be on the receiving end of it. That was quite difficult.”

Finding Foodbank meant finding a safety net

Shane and Sarah are brave, hardworking and generous people. They worked hard to ensure they have everything they needed for their family.

Always a ‘doer’ and wanting to ensure their family’s financial security, Shane and Sarah decided to start their own business together. They meticulously wrote their business plan, raised their capital and invested all their savings, some of which was to eventually pay for their much-anticipated wedding.

A part of the business plan included that Sarah would continue to work full-time, while Shane worked part-time and set-up their company.

They were both so excited for what the future held for them, until the second day of trading, that is. That’s when Sarah lost her job, and they felt their lives begin to unravel.

They had invested everything they had into their company, and the nature of their business meant it would take months and months for them to get invoices paid once clients were signed up. As a result, they, by their own admission ended up in in a hole pretty quickly.

That’s when Shane’s mother suggested they reach out to Foodbank.

Shane was very resistant to asking for help in the beginning, his pride got in the way and he didn’t want to admit that they needed help.

“We’ve always done fairly well, you know, at least average, financially, and we have never been in this kind of position. We give to a lot of charities as well. We never thought that we’d have to be on the receiving end of it. That was quite difficult.”

Speaking of Foodbank, Shane said, “The beautiful thing about this place, it’s all great quality stuff at the prices that I remember things being in the 90s, when you could support a household with two or three kids on one, nine to five income, you know. It’s just a different world now.”

A cost-of-living crisis which is ravaging our country means that nobody is immune to finding themselves in a tricky financial situation. It’s impacting most people to varying degrees.

For Shane and his family, coming to Foodbank was the difference between having to sell one or even both of their cars and meant they and their children had access to healthy nutritious food and didn’t feel the full impact of the severity of the family’s financial situation.

It meant they had a safety net of sorts, with budget friendly prices at Foodbank meaning they could free up more of their very limited budget to pay for other essentials, such as house and car repayments, utility and power bills and things for their growing children, fearing they would be teased if they were seen to be different at school.

Asked what advice he would give to anyone in a similar position Shane said that you need to swallow your pride and use the help before you get past the point of no return financially.

“I never thought that I’d be in the position where I needed this. It’s not just for homeless people. It’s not just for people below the poverty line. If you’ve worked really hard to get to where you are in life, and because of situations that can often be out of your control, if everything is going to come crashing down, everything that you’ve worked for – this place is here to provide that kind of stepping stone or, just that bit of support, while you’re trying to sort everything out and bring everything back to homeostasis.”

A big believer in giving back, Shane said that even though finances go up and down, he and Sarah had always made a point of maintaining their giving to charity even when things got quite tough.

For Shane and Sarah’s family, Foodbank was the difference between falling deeper and deeper into financial hardship and finding the will to keep fighting.

They aren’t entirely out of the woods yet by any stretch of the means, but they are definitely on the up and up. They are finally receiving the invoiced fees from their business which they have been working on for months, which means there’s definitely a light at the end of the tunnel for them.

For Shane and Sarah, coming to Foodbank kept their spirits high, because even though there was a time when they were only a day away from defaulting on their mortgage repayments, they were able to make ends meet and avoid any bad credit rating due to the support they received.

“You know, I don’t think I would have been able to maintain the motivation had things gotten much worse, and so, Foodbank helped us to keep our keep our heads above water and keep our chins high while we worked through the tough times.”

If you or anyone you know is experiencing food insecurity, don’t struggle in silence and reach out today for a referral on 1800 979 777

Bringing you more
fresh fruit and vegetables

From Perth to the South-West, we are building on existing and creating new relationships with growers, transport companies and everyone in-between, to bring our agencies and customers a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables.

It’s no secret that the relentless cost of living crisis has long dictated how individuals spend their money, with the weekly food shopping budget being first hit in many cases. Healthy, balanced diets become increasingly unaffordable for Western Australian families on low to middle-range incomes in the current cost-of-living crisis.

In August last year we recognised the urgent need for the provision of healthy fruit and vegetables for Western Australian and moved to provide our customers with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Our free fruit and vegetable initiative has been hugely popular and successful but has meant that to keep up with demand, we have had to explore avenues we have not been able to explore previously – whether that be due to the high cost of transport or small budgets internally – we now have dedicated staff members for food sourcing to keep up with demand.

So it was very exciting to be invited to attend the annual Carnarvon Growers Association (CGA) field day, as we are currently not working the growers in Carnarvon region.

The weekend was full of fun, and a great opportunity to meet and greet the growers. There were many interesting presentations which talked about focusing on costs and improving the methods of production, distribution, transportation, and marketing of horticultural products, and so much more. It was also interesting to learn that Carnarvon produces 80 percent of Western Australia Fruit and Vegetables is just incredible. Such a valuable part of Australia!

Visits like these are essential – through engagement and partnership with the many growers in this region, along with pack shed programmes – events such as these allow us to build important relationships which will hopefully enable us to capture produce that would otherwise go to landfill, and provide quality, fresh produce to those that need it the most.

This, coupled with partnerships with transport companies like Team Global Express to move produce from Carnarvon to Perth, to support our Perth Airport branch along with supporting our regional branches – Peel, Kalgoorlie, Bunbury, Albany and Geraldton.

Just a few of the benefits of an affordable healthy diet include improved education outcomes for children, reduced future health costs and reduced social inequality.

In 2024 Foodbank WA provided 1,273,375 kgs of fruit and vegetables fruit and vegetables to our charity partners, schools and directly to households. This equates to 37% of our overall food distribution total.

For our agencies and customers, free fruit and vegetables mean that people no longer have to worry about the affordability of buying healthy food which is a key factor in people’s food choices.

The Emergency Relief & Food Assistance Hotline 1800 979 777 is open Monday to Friday 9.00am -5.00pm and is the easiest and quickest way to secure a referral to shop at Foodbank.

Interesting facts
about Foodbank WA

When we talk about operations and logistics at Foodbank, we are usually talking big numbers.

To start, last financial year we provided 9.2 million meals to those who were doing it tough, distributing food and groceries through the 471 frontline charities we service and partner with.

In the same time period, we provided breakfast and fruit to over 560 schools feeding almost 25,600 children weekly and delivered nutrition education to 6,577 attendees including to children, people with disability, parents and adults.

Our Hunger Report published in 2024 revealed that more than 370,000 households experienced food insecurity last financial year. Close to 200,000 households experienced severe food insecurity the last financial year with 1 in 5 people facing days of no food.

They are all very big numbers.

Here are some interesting facts and big stats about Foodbank you may not know:

The largest freezer of all of the six Foodbank branches is in the Perth branch and holds 468 pallets. It is set at a very cold -18 degrees Celsius, walking in there is a better wake-up than a strong coffee!

In January and February this year alone, we had 913 tonnes of food that came into our branch either donated or purchased. To give you an idea of the volume of that, our largest truck takes 10 pallets of food which is equivalent to 6 or 7 tonnes of stock. This would mean we would need 152 trucks to move this food.

Our Community Kitchen is like no other in Australia. Besides being the only Foodbank kitchen in the country, what makes our kitchen different is that each week Foodbank WA’s Chef Grant is dealt the ultimate mystery box challenge, or in his case, mystery pallet.

It’s hard to image but this means that chef Grant does not know exactly what he will be cooking each week and with what ingredients until sometimes the Monday morning he starts!

Each meal is dependent on what is donated. To date, 533,681 meals have been prepared in our Community Kitchen since its inception in 2015.

Where does our food come from? We currently have 371 amazing and generous donors that range from transport companies, to manufacturers, farmers and growers, packing sheds, meat suppliers the list goes on.

Western Australia is vast, making travel complex and expensive. In addition to our 17-vehicle fleet of trucks that operate between our six branches in Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Peel, Bunbury and Albany in addition to our Perth branch in the Perth Airport precinct we run our Mobile Foodbank service which has 44 locations. This mean that the kms certainly add up week after week and month after month. This sees our average kms driven per year to an eye-watering 316,900km. That’s a little over 80 trips across the country in a year!

If you or someone you know is struggling to afford food, please seek assistance by calling The Emergency Relief & Food Assistance Hotline 1800 979 777, Monday to Friday 9.00am -5.00pm.

The 8-year-old making a difference one bottle at a time

Owen Header April 2025 1200x400px

At just eight years old, Owen is proving that small actions can create a huge impact. Armed with his trusty buggy, Owen zips around his neighbourhood collecting bottles and cans for a cause close to his heart. Every cent he earns from recycling at his local Return and Earn machine is donated to Foodbank NSW & ACT, helping provide meals for those in need.

His journey started after his mum heard about Foodbank’s School Breakfast for Health program and how kids were going to school hungry. This led Owen to think: How can I help? Inspired by the power of recycling and the difference it could make, Owen began his mission to turn discarded drink containers into meals for people doing it tough. Over the months, what started as a small act of kindness has become a routine that showcases the power of giving back.

Local Kiosk

Return and Earn makes recycling easy and rewarding, and their partnership with Foodbank NSW & ACT has amplified its impact. With every container recycled and donated, funds go directly toward providing meals for struggling families. To date, this initiative has raised an incredible $200,000, equivalent to 400,000 meals, proving that small actions can lead to big change.

Owen’s story proves that one person’s effort really can make a difference. Whether you’re a seasoned recycler or just getting started, you can join the movement this April!

Locate your nearest Return and Earn kiosk, deposit eligible containers and choose to donate your earnings to Foodbank NSW & ACT—it’s that simple.

Get involved today.

Mark’s story

“I used to feel a lot of shame about shopping at Foodbank, it’s not something I ever imaged for my wife and myself, but life had other plans.”

Mark and his wife are no strangers to hard work, Mark worked as a commercial ceiling fixer and his wife Nicole had worked tirelessly in Aged Care for many years. They were self-sufficient and had never had to entertain the thought of struggling and reaching out for help. That all changed on one awful day which altered the direction of their lives forever.

Making life a little bit easier

Mark’s wife was involved in an accident which left her disabled for life. This led to the couple battling with the NDIS for assistance for more than three years – despite having numerous letters from doctors, expensive specialists and even Centrelink. Their experience has left them feeling like they are simply being discouraged from accessing help they rightly deserved – and desperately need – by being asked to fill out form after form and asked to submit more documentation about Nicole’s condition with no end in sight.

Unable to get the assistance they needed, and with each essential specialist’s appointment costing upwards of $400, the couple went through all of their savings, followed by their Super and are now living in state housing. Mark had to give up his job to become his wife’s full-time carer, placing further strain on their finances. The benefit he receives now is equal to what two days’ work would have been for him.

Not only did Mark and Nicole have to adjust to the very abrupt and lifechanging situation hey found themselves in through absolutely no fault of their own, they had to find a way to survive whilst also getting Nicole the care and treatment she required.

Finding Foodbank was game changing for Mark and Nicole. Mark says that being able to shop at discounted prices, great range of well-priced meat, along with the free fruit and vegetables, has been phenomenal. While they have both had to adapt how they eat and the types of food they cook, thanks to Foodbank they aren’t missing out on nutritious and healthy meals.

“I have spoken to other customers at the Peel branch and so many have told me that before finding Foodbank, they had to skip meals so that they could feed their kids. It’s a very harsh reality for some. There are so many people who thanks to Foodbank now send their kids to school with a full tummy in the morning. That’s a beautiful thing.”

While Mark still occasionally feels ashamed for having to ask for help, it’s become easier for him because he finds that the staff and volunteers at the branch are supportive and there’s no judgement at all.

“Nobody wants a handout. They want to stand on their own two feet. But sometimes you just need to swallow your pride and ask for help, it’s worth it for your family. Even cats and dogs are taken care of at Foodbank, with pet supplies often on offer. Foodbank makes life just that little bit easier.”

If you or anyone you know is experiencing food insecurity, don’t struggle in silence and reach out for a referral today on 1800 979 777

More than lunch: How schools are serving up support

At Footscray High School (Kinnear Campus) student wellbeing is at the heart of everything they do. With Dana leading the charge as the Mental Health Practitioner, big steps have been made to improve food access for students. Dana and the team have worked hard to break down stigma around accessing food, creating an open and welcoming space for communication and building connection.

Through the School Breakfast Clubs Program, schools can access a range of emergency lunch products to further support students who may not have access to a sufficient or nutritious lunch. Providing lunch items at school enables identified students to concentrate and participate effectively in the school day.

“Food is nurture” says Dana, “And it’s an access point to wellbeing. The lunch program at Footscray High is not just about the food, this is a supportive space all round.”

Lunch items are available for students who require additional access to food throughout the day and are accessed via the wellbeing office. Everything from the School Breakfast Clubs Program soups to tuna bowls is available, right next to the wellbeing office, where Dana and the Wellbeing team sit. Students ring the doorbell to access the area, ensuring that Wellbeing team have an opportunity to build meaningful connections with students through food. Students can then use the microwaves in the VCE and canteen areas to heat up their lunch.

There’s no going without at Wallan Primary School

Meanwhile, at Wallan Primary, they’ve made sure that no student goes without food. Every day, they offer a lunch program that gives all students who need it, easy access to lunch. Around 20 students benefit each day, making sure they’re fuelled up for learning. The tuna and rice bowls and the fresh fruit are particularly popular choices.

Breakfast Club Coordinator Karen is grateful they can give their students lunch when they need it.  “It is fantastic that we are able to provide food for our students, no questions asked. Students particularly like having apples available to them during class time”.

Like Footscray High School, the lunch program serves a greater purpose at Wallan Primary, “providing lunch to our most vulnerable students helps to get them ready for learning. We are also able to identify families that may require further assistance,” said Karen.

Amy, a Mental Health Practitioner from Werribee Secondary College has found the lunch program particularly helpful with engagement and wellbeing. “Food is a great way to connect with kids” she said. “The lunch products are a great way to get to know the students. While they’re waiting for meals to heat up, we use that time to build rapport and make sure that they have a positive experience with people at the school.”

“Food is such a great way to connect with people, especially teenagers, and it is such a great starting point to get to know them and build a sense of trust.”

All these schools have shown just how important it is to take care of students’ nutritional needs. They’ve created environments that reduce stigma and make sure students feel nourished—physically and emotionally.

The lunch programs at Footscray High School (Kinnear Camus), Werribee Secondary College and Wallan Primary School are just a few brilliant examples of how food access plays a vital role as a connector to wellbeing.
