A supermarket where everything’s special

Imagine not being able to feed your family. Such a stressful, lonely place to be.

Then you hear about a cool new supermarket in your neighbourhood… where you can fill a trolley to help nourish the people you love AND it’s completely free of charge.

Ta da. We’ve just opened a supermarket EXACTLY like that at our Morwell and Ballarat Community Food Centres providing 100s OF LOCAL FAMILIES PER WEEK with trolleys full of fresh produce, dairy and all their pantry essentials.

Putting the ‘super’ back into supermarket for hard hit regional communities – with YOUR support.

Foodbank community supermarket

In Ballarat, our supermarket opened in March last year with a pilot program run in partnership with our friends at Federation Uni for students experiencing severe hardship. It has since supported over 1,000 young people living in and around Ballarat.

Now, the supermarket is open to local families who are referred through our local charity partners, so they can do their weekly shop minus the unimaginable stress of wondering how to feed their kids on a non-existent food budget.

Over in Morwell, we opened our supermarket at the beginning of December last year, launching a 16 week pilot program in collaboration with two of our local charity partners. The program gave 50 families a week living in Morwell and surrounding areas easy access to healthy food leading up to that painful Christmas period and is now continuing right through into Autumn.

It’s been a huge success so far, with each family getting their hands on 25kg of food per visit – enough to fill a whole trolley!

What are the supermarkets like?

Well, shoppers get to select their food from baskets brimming with fresh seasonal fruit and veggies, bays stacked with fresh bread, fridges stocked with yoghurt and milk, and aisles full of pantry staples like pasta, rice, cereal, and cans of tuna and legumes. It’s exactly the same as shopping at your local supermarket, but without the cost!

We’re so grateful to YOU for helping provide 100s of regional families with the most caring supermarkets on the planet

Every $1 donated is 2 meals created

Meet the Pink Ladies
volunteer story

Talk about passion, hard work and persistence.

The Pink Ladies, as they are now known, are a team of amazing and driven volunteers in Bunbury who have helped to roll out the Mobile Foodbank in Bunbury.

The evolution of Mobile Foodbank in Bunbury began in 2021 with deliveries direct to Community Resource Centres using the branches’ bundles as stock.  Fast forward to the end of 2022 and the branch received their little van and started scouting for Mobile Foodbank locations.

The branch started the Mobile Foodbank runs in 2023 starting out small, with some local sites and then expanding their reach further.

The project was driven by Lois and Debbie with Rachael joined them a little later. Their pink hi-vis distinguished them from everyone else and gave them their much-loved nickname.

They have built up a grateful client base that now look forward to them coming to their towns and they are very appreciative of the service.

The Pink Ladies have put together a very efficient service still keeping a personal touch and feel.

The Pink Ladies are also joined on occasion by Terry and Ray who can put a little bit of extra muscle to work.

Thank you Pink Ladies, we love your passion!

Tackling hunger in the Goldfields

Families in Western Australia’s Goldfields region are increasingly struggling to put food on the table due to rising costs of living and limited access to affordable groceries.

With the help of AngloGold Ashanti Australia, we are tackling hunger town by town.

We have been working towards gaining a better understanding of the nature and food relief requirements in the region, the barriers and complexities of the area, to be able to effectively meet the demand for food relief within the region.

A new two year partnership with AngloGold Ashanti Australia will allow us to better support the Kalgoorlie branch and the community’s food relief needs. The much-needed funding will allow us to boost up our Everyday Food Essential Range, meaning the branch will have a consistent range of pantry staple items available to customers. The partnership has also seen us create an Emergency Relief Fund to support the Goldfields communities in times of emergencies such as floods, extended power outages and the like.

“AngloGold Ashanti Australia are a valued an active local community partner giving back for the greater good. Their support is helping to provide dignity to the most vulnerable Goldfields communities.” said Foodbank WA CEO Kate O’Hara.

As a part of their two-year commitment to the Kalgoorlie Branch and the Goldfields community, we are collaboratively seeking to provide assistance where it is needed most.

Laverton and Mt Margaret were identified as areas which needed urgent assistance. Laverton, with its community of 900 people, was seen as the highest priority due to the size of the community, closely followed by Mt Margaret with a population of 50 people, which is located 50km out of Laverton and has no food and grocery shops whatsoever.

Thanks to AngloGold Ashanti Australia and the support of Compass Group and Team Global Express who provided transport, the two communities received much needed food supplies in December, the equivalent of 16,000 meals, which were delivered to the Laverton Cross Cultural Association who then distributed it too members of the community who needed the support the most. Future deliveries will be made over the financial year to the community providing them with a constant supply of essential items.

Together with AngloGold Ashanti Australia we will continue to work to identify and support the emergency food requirements of the most vulnerable people in the Goldfields region of Western Australia.

Our single vision is to tackle the issue of hunger and positively impact the lives of community members in the region with lasting change.

Arc Infrastructure supporting the  Wheatbelt

Long term Foodbank WA supporters Arc Infrastructure, have been great supporters of WA Wheatbelt communities for five years now, making a real difference to those most vulnerable.

The results of a needs assessment in 2020 into the wheatbelt region funded by Arc Infrastructure helped us to identify the degree of food relief required in the region and a potential model which would service the area. This has allowed us to deliver specific and catered food relief into the Wheatbelt by way of funding food hampers to specific identified areas and has also brought to life our nom! food and nutrition education sessions within the catchment area of the Wheatbelt area.

Logistically, travel distances are the biggest barrier to food relief in regional Western Australia, and for the Wheatbelt, Arc is ensuring that nobody goes without.

Thanks to Arc Infrastructure, in the past five month alone, 730 food hampers have been distributed Beverly (10), Merredin (240) Northam (320), Wagin (80) and Wyalkatcham (80). Each hamper provides a minimum of 16 meals meaning that the food relief provided to these communities is the equivalent of 11,680 meals for those who may otherwise go without.

Arc Infrastructure’s impact in the central Wheatbelt region spreads wider with their support of Foodbank WA’s nom! program which is a range of nutrition education and cooking programs developed to improve the knowledge, confidence, and skills of WA communities to support healthy eating, food literacy and help decrease food insecurity.

These nutrition and cooking programs are tailored to different age groups and demographics and discuss different health and life skills topics (healthy eating, shipping on a budget, meal planning, food safety and more).

Thanks to Arc’s support, Foodbank WA delivered nom! sessions to 161 participants in under six months to kids, youth and families.

In these challenging times, Arc’s support is at the heart of our efforts, enabling us to reach many in the Central Wheatbelt region. “Together, we’re not just providing meals; we’re ensuring everyone has access to the healthy food they deserve. this partnership is vital, helping us continue our purpose to feed, educate, and advocate for those in need. Thank you Arc, because together, we’re making a lasting difference.” said Kate O’Hara, CEO Foodbank WA.

Arc Infrastructure’s support has enabled us to connect with the community as a whole and to build stronger relationships with essential organisations to ensure we continue to identify where the need is and to provide the necessary food relief.

We couldn’t do what we do without your support, thank you Arc Infrastructure.

Southern Ports supports struggling families

Western Australia’s regional and remote regions boast beautiful and unique landscapes, flora, fauna and Cultural ways of life.

What can often be forgotten is the geographic isolation and socio-economic challenges that can create a multifaceted problem around food security.

The fact is that living in regional and remote Australia is widely considered more expensive than Perth across a range of goods and services. Food is generally more expensive in regional Western Australia due to vast distances and transportation costs.

Many regional areas are far from major distribution hubs, requiring long-distance transportation for fresh produce, meat, and other goods. Fuel costs for these journeys add up, and these expenses are passed on to consumers.

We are so grateful to our amazing partners across the State, which help to alleviate some of the burden of accessing affordable, nutritious and culturally appropriate food.

Thanks to our partnership with Southern Ports, and it’s very generous $25,000 of funding allocated to help fight hunger in the Great Southern, Southwest and Goldfields-Esperance regions, vulnerable communities received 655 hampers, which is equal to 10,480 meals.

“This cost-of-living crisis is decimating family budgets, those living regionally have been hit hard. We are so pleased that Southern Ports’ ongoing commitment will continue to support our vulnerable communities across southern WA. The positive impact of the first year of the partnership was incredible and it is vitally important that we continue to assist communities where we can. Together we are making a lasting difference” said Kate O’Hara Foodbank WA CEO.

Last year 371,000 Western Australian households experienced food insecurity, with many skipping meals or going whole days without food. This includes over 120,000 children who experience hunger on a daily basis.

Looking forward, our Bunbury and Albany branches will continue to provide hampers to the South West and Great Southern regions, and we will partner with Esperance Care Services to provide hampers further south into the Goldfields-Esperance region and surrounds.

We couldn’t do what we do without our valuable partners. Thank you, Southern Ports.

Omega Fresh
ups the ante

We are so grateful to the amazing growers and producers we partner with who help to ensure that no family goes without.

After receiving overwhelming feedback from our customers that healthy, balanced diets were becoming increasingly unaffordable for Western Australian families on low to middle-range incomes in the cost-of-living crisis, we decided to make all our fruits and vegetables free for our customers.

Fast forward almost six months and our customers are thrilled with our fruit and vegetable offering.

Behind the scenes we are working hard with growers to ensure we have plenty of supply. We anticipate that more than a million kilos of fresh produce will be provided free across the State through our branches and Mobile Foodbanks this year.  We are so grateful to the amazing growers and producers we partner with who help to ensure that no family goes without.

Omega Fresh have donated vegetables to us for a few years now but decided to step it up a notch in 2024, boosting our fresh vegetable offering by a massive 7,000kg, donating an abundance of eggplant, zucchini, greens and sprouts just to name a few.

Eggplant, zucchini, greens, and sprouts are nutritional powerhouses, offering a myriad of health benefits. Rich in antioxidants, eggplants combat free radicals, promoting heart health and reducing inflammation. Their fibre content supports digestion and helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Zucchini, with its high-water content, aids hydration and is an excellent low-calorie source of vitamin C, which boosts immunity and skin health.

Leafy greens, such as spinach and kale, are loaded with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as iron and calcium, supporting bone health, vision, and overall vitality. Their abundance of dietary fibre promotes digestive regularity and gut health. Sprouts, such as alfalfa or broccoli sprouts, are nutrient-dense and high in enzymes that enhance digestion and nutrient absorption. They are also rich in vitamins and antioxidants that support cellular repair and immune function.

Phong Le, known as the Zucchini King, operates out of the Perth Markets and has supported Foodbank for many years decided to step up his support last year, saying “seeing the effects of what the cost-of-living crisis was doing to so many in the community, I was determined to do what I could to help. I also hate to see food go to waste, so it’s win-win.”

We are so pleased that our customers can incorporate these nutritious vegetables into their diets helping their overall wellbeing.

Western Australian farmers feeding hope

When like-minded people get together and want to make a difference, they can achieve big results.

Thanks to CBH Group, a grain growers’ cooperative that handles, markets and processes grain from the wheatbelt of Western Australia, generous Western Australian farmers donated wheat and barley in November and December last year raising $30,852 for us, feeding hope for change for those most vulnerable.

The CBH Growers program empowers farmers to donate some of their grain when they visit weigh stations across Western Australia or via LoadNet – CBH’s online portal. Donated grain is then sold with the proceeds being donated to Foodbank WA to provide food relief to those struggling to put food on the table.

Kate O’Hara, Foodbank WA CEO said: “We are incredibly grateful to these farmers who have donated a portion of their grain to Foodbank WA and to CBH for their Growers Program.”

There are 370,000 Western Australian households in food stress and those living in regional areas are often harder hit. We can only help those most in need with support of generous donors.

This wonderful initiate sees the grower choose how much they want to donate, with all grain types accepted.

As the cost of living continues to drive demand for food relief, these donations are vital.

Lisa’s story

“I think that Foodbank is the difference between eating and not eating”

“Some weeks, I don’t have money for food, and this is where I come because I can’t afford the supermarkets. Sometimes you can’t get absolutely all of your shopping there, but it can make a big difference to supplement what you do have to buy at the supermarket. Some weeks, without Foodbank, I wouldn’t be eating at all.”

Having only moved to Western Australia a few years ago, Lisa was excited to start a new chapter of her life. Her kids are grown up and while all of her family live in NSW, Perth offered the sea-change she was after.

Everything was working out well for Lisa, she loved the weather and laid-back Perth lifestyle, and she was enjoying her job. Then out of the blue Lisa became unwell in January of 2024.

It quickly became evident that she would be unable to work at all and Lisa’s work leave evaporated. Her full-time job that was her safety net, was gone in an instant. She hasn’t been able to work since. A terrifying concept – considering the cost-of-living crisis which has been swirling around for years now, and the never-ending bills which land in our inboxes and mailboxes like clockwork, only to be more expensive than the last.

Lisa didn’t know where to turn. Centrelink was her first port of call, and from there she learned that she could speak with a financial councillor for some guidance around how to plan for her future. Having worked her whole adult life, she began to navigate the welfare system which was a huge learning curve. It was her financial counsellor who told her about Foodbank. Initially, Lisa had to overcome her pride to reach out for help, but she is so glad she did admit that it’s made a huge difference to her budget and has eased her stress levels.

“It’s really taken a load off, especially when the bills come in. Also for me, trying to find healthy food and eating properly, which is so important when you are going through health problems, and to actually have access to veggies and fruit is a lifesaver. With my condition, I have moments where I can’t cook, I’m totally unfunctional. So for those moments I have Foodbank’s pre-packaged meals in the freezer ready to go, all I have to do is heat it up.”

At the moment, it seems that Lisa will be off work for another 12 months while she navigates her health issues. She is extremely grateful to the assistance she has received encourages anyone who is on the brink of financial stress to reach out and ask for help. The financial counsellors Lisa was in contact with have access to a wide range of integrated and person-centred services designed to reduce the impact of financial hardship.

Of her journey through this hard period of her life, Lisa says, “It’s something that no one can see around the corner, no one can see what’s coming, and anyone could find themselves in a position where they might need to reach out for help, most definitely anyone. I never thought this would happen to me. It’s scary to think that something like this can happen so quickly, which can throw people off on a different path in life.”

Happy that her kids are grown up and won’t be affected by her inability to work, Lisa says she doesn’t know how the average family is making ends meet.

“I think that Foodbank is the difference between eating and not eating. Some weeks, I don’t have money for food, and this is where I come because I can’t afford the supermarkets. Sometimes you can’t get absolutely all of your shopping there, but it can make a big difference to supplement what you do have to buy at the supermarket. Some weeks, without Foodbank, I wouldn’t be eating at all.”

How do we meet demand?

9.2 million. That’s the number of meals we provided last financial year across Western Australia.

We work with farmers, wholesalers, manufactures and retailers who donate and redirect surplus product to us but to meet demand we are always working behind the scenes to see how we can better support our customers and provide them with a wide and varied products to choose from.

While the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on families and individuals has been devastating, many businesses have also been impacted greatly due to manufacturing, labour, logistical and transportation costs rising exponentially. This has meant that many of our donors have had to reassess how they operate, to ensure more efficiency and many, as a result, also donate less. One such example is protein products. The last two years have seen a dramatic drop, 66% to be exact in the amount of protein that is donated.

To ensure a constant and consistent supply of fruit, vegetables, meat and shelf-stable items, we keep a very close eye on volumes of food that are donated so that we can bridge the gap where its required.

With our customer base growing each day, last year we applied to the Department of Communities for a $500,000 grant to purchase additional sources of protein, creating our first Protein Supply Program.

Our amazing donors Inghams, DBC and Westpork, Harvey Beef, Craig Mostyn Group and Austral Fisheries who generously donate to us on a weekly basis, have in addition to this, generously offered us reduced rates to purchase additional protein at a discounted fee whenever they have excess stock on hand.

Thanks to our donors and to the generous grant from the Department of Communities, we have been able to keep up with the increase in demand we see across our branches across the state. We continue to innovate to create a sustainable and continuous supply of food that meets growing demand and ensures protein isn’t just a ‘sometimes’ food for our customers.

This community effort and collective responsibility means that the most vulnerable in our community can have healthy and nutritious meals available for themselves and their families.

Christmas spirit reaches remote WA

In an act of generosity and community spirit, families in the remote Aboriginal communities of Djarindjin and Ardyaloon received much-needed hampers late last year filled with essential items and treats for Christmas.

This initiative organised through the Broome Youth Care Centre, was only possible thanks to the generosity of partners like Hawaiian and Sodexo.

Hawaiian generously covered the cost of the hampers, while Sodexo coordinated the delivery logistics with the help of TGE, providing the transport at no cost on both occasions.

“As part of Sodexo’s Stop Hunger initiative, we are committed to fighting food insecurity in partnership with Foodbank and local NGOs. We are proud to work with an extensive supplier network that allows us to respond to logistical challenges and deliver vital support and services to remote communities. Our commitment is to improve quality of life where we operate and create lasting positive impacts, ensuring no community is left behind” said Adrian Lorenzin, Sodexo Australia Director of Supply Management and Tech & Services.

The hampers were packed and delivered in time for Christmas, ensuring that families doing it tough could enjoy some treats during the festive season. Lucie, the primary contact at the Broome Youth Care Centre, played a pivotal role in organising and delivering the hampers in both communities.

Richard Kilbane, Chief Operating Officer at Hawaiian, said: For over 25 years, Hawaiian has been a proud member of the Broome community through Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa. We understand that many Western Australians, particularly those in remote areas, face challenging times, especially during the festive period.

Through our connection with the local Broome community and collaborating with our partners, we identified an opportunity to make a difference and show our support and care for local families in need.

Small acts of kindness can lead to a greater ripple effect, which is especially meaningful during the season of giving. We hope this inspires more kindness and that we succeeded in spreading some extra cheer this holiday season.”

By coming together, we have not only provided practical support but are feeding change for families in some of Western Australia’s most remote areas.
