Maggie’s volunteer story

“What don’t I love about Foodbank, I love everything!”

Maggie is one in a million. Recently celebrating seven years with Foodbank Peel and we can’t imagine the branch without her.

Having relocated to Mandurah eight years ago, Maggie thought it would be a great time to start volunteering. She connected with the Peel Volunteer Resource Centre, and Foodbank was one of the options they suggested. She popped into the branch for visit and started the very next day, gift wrapping for Christmas at the shopping centre, and then started in the branch the following week.

When asked what she likes most about Foodbank her answer is full of passion “What don’t I love about Foodbank, I love everything!”

It’s my happy place. I love the family feeling I have with the team, I have the best little pocket rocket Boss, building friendships and bonding with everyone I am around. As well as everyone cares for each other. We get to be part of the paying it forward, by caring for our community in the work we do.”

In her spare time Maggie loves cooking, it makes her excited to be creative and to experiment with food. And of course, spending time with her family.

We are so lucky to have you Maggie, thank you for everything that you do.

Charles La Trobe Breakfast Club The Heart of Community

At the Charles La Trobe College Breakfast Club, a warm and welcoming atmosphere transforms the mornings of 126 primary school students into something special. With a dedicated team of volunteers and a commitment to nourishing young minds, the club epitomises the power of community connections.

Breakfast Club runs every school day, drawing in 12-15 eager students who gather around a communal table to start their day with a nutritious meal and a smile. Community volunteers serve as the backbone of the Charles La Trobe Breakfast Club ensuring that every child starts the day with a healthy breakfast. An incredible 90% of the program’s volunteer pool is made up of local community members, who are passionate about contributing to the wellbeing of the children. Lorem dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Cras malesuada nisi eu elit congue, quis a liquet neque ornare. Nulla facilisi. Donec iaculis dolor elementum purus dignissim, ac commodo lacus bibendum.

Impact on school community

Since the Breakfast Club’s inception, the program has evolved into an essential part of the school’s offering, enhancing student engagement and creating a positive atmosphere. Volunteers work closely with school staff, fostering relationships that benefit the entire community.

Volunteer coordinator, Brooke noted, “The children are so excited to come to school and are so friendly and kind to one another.”

The Breakfast Club serves a variety of food options, with the small milk cartons a favourite, while fresh fruit is available throughout the day. Students are encouraged to eat at a communal table, encouraging a sense of community and belonging. They also learn responsibility by cleaning up after themselves—scraping their plates into the bin and placing their dishes in the sink—a small but significant step towards independence that parents likely appreciate as well!

The Breakfast Club is more than food. Volunteers come together to create an environment where children feel safe and valued. Children from Prep to Grade six come together, sharing not only breakfast but also stories, jokes and songs.

They take turns making announcements, filling the air with their favourite jokes and music, and even created a whimsical song about the Breakfast Club inspired by their rehearsals for the Wizard of Oz school musical: “Somewhere over Breakfast Club, skies are blue, and the toastie that you dare to dream of, really does come true.”

Going Above and Beyond

Currently, six enthusiastic volunteers dedicate their time each week, bringing their unique backgrounds and experiences to the club. From a retired teacher who also assists with the reading program to community members recruited through friendship networks, each volunteer contributes to a shared mission: ensuring that no child needs to worry about a healthy breakfast.

Volunteer Barbara goes the extra mile to ensure the Breakfast Club runs smoothly. If supplies run low, she steps in to provide what’s needed to ensure the children don’t go without. Barbara is a retired organisational psychologist, and she brings these skills into her interaction with the children. So, they don’t just get breakfast they get some valuable leadership learning through day-to-day interaction.

Impact on Volunteer community

Being part of the Charles La Trobe Breakfast Club has profoundly impacted the volunteers. They share moments of joy, surprise, and connection with the students, reminding them of the simple joys of childhood.

“The best part of interacting with the students is they surprise us every day and connect us to what it feels like to be young again,” said Brooke. “That’s what I love about the volunteers – each of them has deep personal and professional experience that they bring to the role. We have a retired teacher, accountant, nurse, university lecturer and senior executive all giving up their time to volunteer because they care about the next generation and want the school and families to be strong, healthy and happy.”

Brooke “decided to volunteer because well-nourished children do better in school. It’s heartwarming to see how much joy and excitement the Breakfast Club brings.” Adding, “Our kids went to local schools, and we know the value of lifelong friendships and the bonds that are built at school and by getting involved.”

The Breakfast Club at Charles La Trobe Primary School is more than just a meal program; it is a vibrant hub of community engagement. By leveraging the strengths of local volunteers, the program not only feeds hungry bellies but also fosters a sense of belonging and support, paving the way for a healthier, more confident and connected student cohort.

Testimonial

“Having the Breakfast Club at our primary school makes a real difference to our students. It not only provides them with a healthy meal to start the day but also gives them a sense of community and support. We’re incredibly grateful to Foodbank for their generous donations”.

The 2024 Foodbank Hunger Report shows close to700,000 Queenslanders are suffering through lack of healthy and nutritious food

Close to 700,000 Queensland households can’t put enough food on the table to stay healthy, happy and out of hunger.

The Foodbank Hunger Report shows Queenslanders are feeling the bite when it comes to finding sufficient food to feed themselves and their families.

Foodbank Queensland CEO Jess Watkinson said the Hunger Report findings showed a critical need for more to be done to alleviate food insecurity.

“1 in 5 Queensland households skipped meals or scrimped on their serving sizes in the last 12 months because of severe food insecurity,” Ms Watkinson said.

“Food insecurity is being felt more acutely in regional areas, with 36% of regional households facing food insecurity in the last 12 months, compared with 28% in metropolitan areas.”

“Knowing where to find food relief support has increased from 36% last year to 47% this year. This is a glimmer of hope that those going without are finding out and accessing food relief; however, this shows that Foodbank Queensland’s role is more critical than ever.”

Key Queensland statistics:

  • Close to 700,000 Queensland households have experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months, meaning they aren’t eating quality, variety, or desirable food.
  • 1 in 5 Queensland households have experienced severe food insecurity in the last 12 months, meaning they are reducing serving sizes of meals or skipping eating.
  • Nearly half (44%) of Queensland’s low-income households (earning less than $30,000 per year) are experiencing food insecurity.
  • Over 1 in 5 (22%) Queensland households with an income of more than $95,000 are food insecure.
  • More than 1 in 4 (26%) of mortgage holders in Queensland experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months.
  • Food insecurity is being felt more acutely in regional areas (36%) compared to metropolitan areas (28%).
  • Awareness of food relief support in Queensland is growing with 47% of food insecure households knowing where to seek food relief support in the past 12 months compared to 36% in 2023.

Low-income households at breaking point and routinely skipping meals

Tuesday 15 October: Low-income households are enduring the highest rates of food insecurity since the onset of the cost-of-living crisis, according to the Foodbank Hunger Report 2024, released today.

Now in its eleventh year, the report from food relief organisation Foodbank, surveyed 4,260 people and highlights the growing divide between those who are able to absorb or adapt to rising costs and those being left behind. More than 870,000 (48%) of Australia’s low-income households (earning less than $30,000) are experiencing food insecurity. This is the highest rate since the onset of the cost-of-living crisis, up 5% on 2022.

The report offers an insight into the state of hunger across the country and reveals more than half (59%) of all food insecure households are experiencing the most severe level of hardship, regularly skipping meals or going entire days without food.

Single parent households are the hardest hit with over two-thirds (69%) facing food insecurity and 41% of these also experiencing the severest form.

Foodbank Australia CEO, Brianna Casey AM is extremely concerned with the latest findings.

“We warned at the beginning of the cost-of-living crisis that low-income households were always going to suffer first, worst and for the longest and these findings confirm this. We are seeing families that were just getting by, now reaching their limits and making unimaginable choices.”

This year’s report highlights the most common contributing factors to food insecurity in Australia.

“Unsurprisingly, people are being forced to cut back on the most basic of essentials, nutritious food, because of the combination of higher costs of housing and essential goods, particularly food and utilities, while wages fail to keep pace – all of which are entirely outside of the control of most Australian households,” said Ms Casey.

Food relief charities such as Foodbank are continuing to experience heightened demand, not only because of the ongoing impacts of the cost-of-living crisis, but also the increase in awareness of where to get help, coupled with core support systems, such as family and friends, no longer being able to assist.

More than half (53%) of food insecure households reported they are receiving food relief more often than a year ago. Worryingly, food insecure households receiving help from friends and family has dropped significantly from 32% in 2023 to 25% in 2024.

“This is an alarming statistic that demonstrates just how desperate the situation has become for those who were once a lifeline suddenly finding themselves living pay to pay, watching every dollar and sadly, no longer in a position to extend help to loved ones and friends.

“We know it’s going to take months, if not years, for many families to bounce back. We will continue to wrap our arms around our communities for as long as it takes, doing our bit to help nutritious, culturally appropriate food get to as many struggling households as possible,” said Ms Casey.

Emily’s Story

Emily fled a violent home – and thanks to the food you provide, she won’t be forced to return.

Imagine having to choose between living with the constant threat of violence, or going hungry.

Emily* was living in fear of her long-term partner. In the five years they’d been together, he’d cut her off from her friends and family and she had no freedom or independence.

“I had no car and no income of my own and he had access to all my social media passwords. There was food… but it was all food he liked. I was too frightened to eat much and when I did, I’d sneak the food.”

Emily was facing an impossible choice. If she stayed, her life was at risk. But if she left, she’d have no home, no belongings and no food. Then one night, soon after she turned 50, Emily’s partner came home and used physical violence against her. The next morning, he acted like nothing had happened.

“He got up and kissed me before he went to work,” she recalls. “After he left, I snapped. I thought; ‘Hang on, I can’t do this anymore’.”

Emily grabbed a bag and packed a few items of clothing. Without a cent to her name, she fled to the bus stop, determined to escape.

“I’ll never forget that wonderful bus driver,” she says. “He took one look at my bruised face, my tears and my suitcase and said: ‘Come on, I’ll take you to the train station’.”

Emily felt so relieved she’d escaped, but she now had to rebuild her life from scratch. In desperation, she called an old friend who helped her find lodgings with a couple who lived two hours away by train.

It was an amazing feeling to have a safe place to sleep from that day on. But as Emily couldn’t contribute any money to the household, she felt guilty eating the couple’s food – especially with the skyrocketing cost of groceries.

So, Emily hopped online to see if there was a place where she could get some basic food items to cook meals of her own. She soon discovered a local Member Charity. This Foodbank Queensland charity partner provides food hampers to those doing it tough. Emily didn’t know it yet, but she was about to get a second chance at life.

“Walking into the food pantry is one of the most beautiful and vivid memories of my life. A young lady said to me ‘Can I help you?’ and I burst into tears – I lost it.”

The kind-hearted volunteer offered Emily a hamper filled with food essentials all people need. The food had been freely provided by Foodbank Queensland, thanks to your amazing support. Emily was astonished as she went through the hamper. There was so much – baked beans, bread, breakfast cereal, rice, fruit and vegetables.

“I was able to go home to my friends’ house with food and feel like I was contributing. One of the first things I made was a soup in the slow cooker. It made my life so much better that I could eat well. The hamper lasted me a week. I was so grateful for the quality of it.”

Three months after Emily escaped her violent partner, she was grateful she could still access food hampers as she took steps to regain her independence. She’d begun doing short courses to prepare for employment. Emily’s confidence was building. So, she asked if she could volunteer at the food pantry for work experience. It was a way to repay the life-changing food she’d received, thanks to you!

With cost-of-living soaring, more people than ever like Emily are struggling to put food on the table. This includes families, older women and even those with jobs. Many Queenslanders are struggling to survive and seeking help for the first time. When they come into the food pantry where Emily volunteers, they are often embarrassed.

But Emily puts them at ease. She greets each person with a warm smile.

“People come in downtrodden, and they go, ‘Oh, I’m sorry, I’ve had to come in’. And I’m like, ‘You know what, honey? They’ve helped me out before – and it’s kept me alive’.

“You wouldn’t believe the looks on their faces when I give them a hamper. They often say ‘Wow, is this mine? Thank you so much.’ We send them off happy.”

After feeling so hopeless, going hungry is something Emily no longer fears. Because there’s a place where she can eat well and be healthy and strong, she can focus on creating a secure future, free from violence and abuse.

“Without this support in my time of crisis I probably would have had to go back to my ex,” she says. “I don’t even know if I’d be alive.

“I felt like nothing then suddenly, I had the support of some food. It’s changed my life and the next steps I’ll take. My independence is back, and I feel good about myself. I’m only 50 and I’m ready to make a career… I’m going places!”

Farmers facing tough times, but generosity still grows.

It’s no secret that farmers are facing unprecedented challenges, from rising fuel and fertiliser costs to fluctuating market prices. Over the past six months, food donations from farms have sharply declined as many farmers are forced to shift away from food crops, opting instead for more profitable alternatives or, in some cases, stepping away from farming altogether.

Broccoli header for Blog 1200x400px

Our Produce Manager, who works closely with farmers and oversees the logistics of fresh produce donations, has seen firsthand the impacts of these challenges:

There has been a huge reduction in donations. Fertilizer and fuel prices have skyrocketed, while the market value for products has stayed the same for years, making it hard for farmers to continue as they used to.”

– Ricky, Produce Manager at Foodbank NSW & ACT

broc 2

Amidst these difficulties, we are incredibly grateful for the generosity of those who continue to support us. A shining example is Rombola Family Farms, who have donated over 41,000 kgs of broccoli in the past three months alone. This donation came at a time when the cold winter months had limited our supply and the market prices for broccoli were soaring—making fresh vegetables even harder to access for families in need.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are vital not just for physical health but also for mental wellbeing. When fresh produce becomes inaccessible, it’s easier for struggling families to turn to cheaper, less nutritious foods. But thanks to donations like these, we’re able to provide healthy options for families and children who need them most.”

– Ricky, Produce Manager at Foodbank NSW & ACT

At Foodbank NSW & ACT, we’re working hard to explore new ways to secure produce—whether it’s from farmers, universities, or other greenhouses—so that we can continue to provide fresh food to those who rely on us. Thanks to the support of our partners and donors, we can continue our mission to fight hunger, even in the toughest of times.

Amazon Teams Up with Australian Red Cross and Foodbank Queensland to Boost Disaster Preparedness Across Queensland

Queensland has received significant support for its disaster preparedness, with Amazon Australia launching a new network of six Disaster Relief Supply Points in Cairns, Wangetti, Townsville, Rockhampton, Dalby and St George. Developed in partnership with Foodbank Queensland and Australian Red Cross, these Disaster Relief Supply Points contain critical supplies that can be dispatched quickly to regional communities when a disaster hits.

Queensland is Australia’s most disaster-prone state and has been hit by almost 100 natural disasters in the past decade1. From today, all six Disaster Relief Supply Points will be operational across Queensland, storing over 55,000 emergency items including toiletries, blankets, tarps, first aid kits and non-perishable food items. These items have been packed into kits by Amazon volunteers and pre-positioned ready for fast and efficient collection and distribution by various organisations, charities and local disaster groups. Distribution will vary dependent on the type of disaster and response required.

Amazon Australia has worked closely with Foodbank Queensland to identify and engage partner organisations embedded in these local communities to store these supplies until they are needed.  The collaboration between organisations like Australian Red Cross and Foodbank Queensland supports the timely and efficient mobilisation of essential items to ensure the delivery of supplies to where they are needed most.

Amazon uses its data expertise alongside insights from its non-profit partners to identify the relief items most commonly needed on the ground when a disaster strikes. Wherever possible, products have been sourced and purchased from Amazon Australia’s small and medium sized business selling partners including Nakie, Little Urchin, Bunji, Zenify, Joonya and Juuni.

Items stored within the Disaster Relief Supply Points have been shipped to regional Queensland from Amazon Australia’s existing Disaster Relief network, located in Amazon’s fulfilment centres in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. The Amazon Disaster Relief network in Australia currently stores more than 250,000 emergency items.

Amazon’s Community Lead, Charlotte Richardsonsaid: “Typically, Amazon Australia’s Disaster Relief network aims to provide emergency supplies to disaster zones within 72 hours, but this can be more challenging for regional and remote residents. By pre-positioning items within regional and remote communities, locals can rest assured the charities supporting them when disaster hits have much faster access to emergency supplies than if they were sent from Brisbane or Sydney.”

Australian Red Cross Queensland Director, Collin Sivalingum said:“Our partnerships, such as the one we have with Amazon Australia, enable us to be there for everyone, always. Right now, as part of our seasonal preparedness activities, Australian Red Cross is working closely with local government authorities to build capacity in accessing essential items and support communities impacted by disasters. These new Amazon Australia Disaster Relief Supply Points, established across regional Queensland, will play a key role helping our collective efforts towards being there for Queenslanders during disasters at a time when they need us most.”

Foodbank Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Jess Watkinson said: “Foodbank Queensland is incredibly thankful for our partnership with Amazon Australia, which allows us to locate supplies and be able to immediately support communities on the road to recovery. With the opening of these new locations across regional Queensland, we will be able to reach more people quickly in times of crisis and we are grateful to our partners across the state for providing the storage locations for these much-needed supplies.”

Disaster Relief Hubs are a signature part of Amazon Australia’s local community relief efforts. Since the devastating 2019-20 bushfires, Amazon Australia has sourced and dispatched more than 700,000 relief items through 15 disasters including bushfires, floods, cyclones and COVID outbreaks.

A paw-fect partnership

Meet Pablo and Pedro, two Guide Dog WA puppies living at the Boronia Pre-release Centre for Women.

We have been very lucky to have the ladies from Boronia Pre-release Centre for Women volunteer with us on a regular basis for many years now. Currently, we have five ladies who do a variety of jobs which help them learn warehousing and customer service skills while contributing to the community.

The five-and-a-half-month-old brothers (who are growing very quickly!) have been hard at work learning socialisation and obedience skills from selected prisoners who’ve been specially trained as puppy handlers.

As part of their training, Pablo and Pedro visit Perth’s Foodbank Centre every week with Boronia’s minimum-security prisoners who volunteer with us.

But it’s not just the pups who are learning new skills. Their handlers say the dogs are also teaching them some very important life lessons.

The pre-release program provides housing in an environment that closely mirrors life outside of prison as it attempts to allow for a less traumatic transition back to everyday life. Staff help facilitate training of the prisoners and try to arrange employment on their release in conjunction with local businesses as a measure to prevent reoffending.

Nourishing the mind

This Mental Health Month we want to remind everyone of how closely food insecurity and mental health are intertwined.

We play a critical role in supporting mental health by addressing both the physical and emotional challenges that come with food insecurity and supporting people with access to nutritious choices.

The very first thing we do is reduce stress and anxiety by providing immediate access to food. When people have their basic need for food met, they can focus on other areas of their life, such as finding employment, securing stable housing, or seeking mental health support, rather than being consumed by the stress of survival.

We also ensure we operate within community settings where individuals are treated with dignity and respect. This sense of being supported and valued can improve self-esteem and reduce feelings of isolation and shame, which often accompany food insecurity. We prioritise dignity and offer a welcoming and stigma-free environment—where our customers feel less ashamed about needing assistance.

Another way we can support people to improve their mental health is through the provision of healthy choices for people needing food relief. Research shows a diet higher in a wide range of fruits, vegetables, legumes, wholegrains and fish help reduce the risk of and improve depressive symptoms.

Recognising that a healthy, balanced diet is becoming increasingly unaffordable for Western Australian’s, we have transitioned to providing free fruit and vegetables to our registered customers over the past twelve months, we have provided 1,273,375 kgs of fruit to our charity partners, schools and directly to households. This equates to 37% of our overall food distribution total.

We also collaborate with other organisations, offering assistance beyond food. Due to the big increase in the demand for our services, we now have a Financial Support Worker from the Financial Wellbeing Collective at the Perth Airport site to assist customers with their needs onsite, five days a week.

Whether in person, or over the phone, when individuals reach out for food assistance, the Financial Support Worker who assesses the individuals needs can also refer them to supportive services they require such as housing support, job training, financial counselling, and healthcare services.

By relieving the burden of food costs, we can help individuals redirect their limited financial resources toward other critical areas, such as healthcare, therapy, or even stress-reducing activities.

Mental Health Week reminds everyone that mental health is just as important as physical health and encourages proactive care for a healthier, happier life.

We are working hard to make food one less thing people need to worry about.

Check out our one-stop-shop Superhero Foods® HQ!

Superhero Foods HQ

Looking for fun, engaging and educational activities for the next school holidays and weekends? When parents think about allowing their kids into the kitchen, many think, mess and too much hard work, but we can support you to get your kids cooking, learn new skills and most of all have fun.

The Superhero Foods® HQ website is jam packed with great resources for teachers, parents and health professionals where you can find healthy, quick and affordable recipe ideas and recipe booklets, games for kids and even an interactive web app which makes healthy eating fun.

Cooking with kids allows children to express their creativity by experimenting with ingredients, and flavours, turning the kitchen into a fun and creative space. It can also boost their confidence – successfully preparing a meal or even a simple dish can give children a sense of accomplishment and boost their self-esteem.

Importantly, involving kids in cooking helps them learn about healthy foods, the importance of a balanced diet, and can make them more willing to try new or nutritious ingredients. Cooking together is also great way to bond with your kids, encouraging teamwork, communication, and spending quality time together during the holidays.

We have plenty of resources to keep little hands and minds busy, our Let’s Feed the Family book has great tips for getting kids started in the kitchen.

Engage your kids with healthy eating and see for yourself how boring broccoli can become fun “Mean Green” and a kiddy favourite, and a cob of corn can become super cool “King Corn”, visit the Superhero Foods® HQ website to see what other alter egos can transform eating habits, and help with dinner prep!

For a change of pace, Superhero Foods® HQ has some great games, printable activity sheets and an interactive web app to reinforce the importance of nutritional education.

By turning cooking into a shared activity during the holidays, you’re creating lasting memories while teaching important skills.
