No need to scooch. We saved you a seat!

Ballarat Community Lunches

Clusters of tables covered with plates full of delicious and hearty food, with 40 new friends squeezed in side by side. That’s the community lunches that you help create. Every week, with YOUR support, we invite locals to share lunch together at our Ballarat Community Food Centre.

Serving up a three-course meal, these afternoons are pretty special, giving hard-hit regional communities a chance to connect and share their stories. All over a plate of great food, which sometimes will be the only meal they eat that day. Which is why we do everything we can to make it count.

Some visitors might walk in as strangers, but after a hot meal on a cold day and a little community storytelling… it’s quite the challenge to walk away without a new friend in tow!

Every $1 donated is
2 meals created

Thank you, Victoria!

All weekend long, you rocked up to our Food Drive with your smiles, your beautiful words of encouragement and best of all, your arms and boots chock-a-block full of food.

There were cars of all kinds, a gleaming convoy of vintage Thunderbirds and Porsches and a big red CFA truck. We’re so grateful to everyone who came along, and of course to our amazing volunteers who unpacked boots with enough energy to launch a rocket and even bigger smiles!

Couldn’t get there in person? You can still be part of our Virtual Food Drive so head over there and fill up a bag, basket, trolley or car boot with urgently needed groceries to help feed more Victorians.

Check out some highlights from Channel 9 News 😊

Serving up a unique menu

As part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations, the Perth branch was invited to a special lunch event curated by our chef, Melissa Davoine featuring a menu inspired by native Australian ingredients.

The unique lunch was a chance to connect, reflect and honour the traditions of First Nations communities through the richness of Indigenous cuisine.

The exciting menu for the day included kangaroo cottage pie, emu brioche burgers with bush tomato chutney, chocolate kangaroo stew, pepper berry lamb kebabs with bush tomato tahini cinnamon myrtle lamb chops with warrigal greens and feta, and saltbush and cheddar damper just to name a few.

Thank you chef Mel, for taking us on this amazing culinary journey.

Small business, big heart

People often think to themselves, “I can’t make a meaningful difference on my own” thinking that change requires lots of influential people and big ideas.

Alex from Splicer Guard – who we have purchased our uniforms from for the last two years has demonstrated that one person can in fact make meaningful change.

Splicer Guard is run and operated by Alex – and only Alex – and from every sale of his innovative work pants he donates 10 meals to Foodbank. For a one-man company that’s a big commitment, and when asked why he chose to support Foodbank Alex said, “In a time where the cost of living continues to rise and more families are doing it tough, being able to give back in a meaningful way means everything.”

Alex has operated Splicer guard for two years now, and in that time has donated over 30,000 meals.

What an incredible example of dedication to making a positive difference in society while emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in creating a world where no one goes hungry.

Thank you Alex and Splicer Guard, because of you, lives are changing.

Teamwork
The heart of volunteering

Volunteering at Foodbank and the nature of our work means that teamwork isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s essential.

Whether you’re packing hampers, stocking shelves, or greeting customers at the front desk, every role contributes to a much larger effort. And when we work together well, that impact multiplies.

Teamwork leads to a shared purpose and stronger motivation. Knowing you are part of something bigger helps to give meaning to every task, no matter how small it may seem.

By the same token, good communication and collaboration mean tasks are completed more efficiently, safely and enjoyably.

Working together and the connection this creates has a positive impact on wellbeing – volunteering alongside a supportive team builds community, something just as important for volunteers as it is for the people we serve.

Here are some great tips for great teamwork:

  • Check in, not just clock in – a simple “How’s your day going?” can go a long way.
  • Offer help when you’ve got capacity – Lending a hand lifts everyone.
  • Be curious, not critical – every volunteer has a different story, skill set and style. That’s what makes a team dynamic.

As we reflect on NAIDOC Week and the importance of shared stories and collective strength, it’s a timely reminder that collaboration – grounded in respect – is at the core of real community.

You can reach out to volunteering@foodbankwa.org.au if you have any suggestions or queries or if you would like to join the Voice of Volunteers group that meets monthly.

Start Your Engines for our Biggest Food Drive ever!

Vroom, Vroom! With 69,000 people relying on our support every day, no matter how hard we work here at Foodbank Victoria, we just can’t keep enough food on our warehouse shelves.

Which is where you ‘vroom’ in.

We’re calling on every business, school, sporting club, community group, family or individual in Victoria (who are in a position to help) to drop off food directly to Foodbank at 4/2 Somerville Road, Yarraville on August 16 and 17, between 10am and 3pm. Volunteers will be on hand to empty boots and baskets. We are looking SPECIFICALLY for eight staple items that are most in demand: Tuna, Pasta Sauce, Pasta, Rice, Cereal, UHT Milk, Canned Fruit and Canned Vegetables.

Drive through food donations

Our Yarraville warehouse will be open for drive through food donations August 16 and 17, between 10am and 3pm. Hit the supermarket and bring any of the 8 most in demand items to fill our shelves.

See you soon!

Community Partner Story  Westside Community Care

Since 1996, Westside Community Care has been a pillar of support for the Greater Springfield area – offering hampers, pantry items, classes, and a warm sense of connection to anyone who walks through their doors. It’s more than just a place to pick up groceries; it’s a safe space where people feel welcome and, most importantly, not alone.

Pastor and Founder Phil Cutcliffe shared that many of the volunteers know that feeling firsthand. They once visited Westside for help themselves and now choose to give back, staying connected to the community that supported them in hard times. It’s a space built on shared experiences, where everyone is encouraged to contribute in their own way.

“We welcome the do’ers, donors and door openers to help out when they can,” Phil said. Westside Community Care encourages people to bring their talents and skills to the space and to hold new events each week to spread the word about the support they can provide.

Foodbank Queensland provides fresh fruit and vegetables to Westside Community Care, supporting them to distribute nutritious food to individuals and families. Once a week, a Westside Community Care volunteer visits the Foodbank Queensland Food Distribution Centre to collect fresh, rescued produce free of charge. This produce is then included in Westside Community Care’s hampers and pantry, helping to ensure local families have access to healthy, fresh food.

Phil is grateful for the support from Foodbank, “Foodbank makes the cost to help people a lot less. We couldn’t help our community without them.”

In May, Westside Community Care welcomed a group of volunteers from Sunny Queen Australia, including CEO, Julie Proctor – who rolled up their sleeves to support the local community. From packing hampers and helping in the pantry to cooking up bacon and egg breakfasts, the morning was full of action, teamwork and heartfelt conversations.

“We are so proud of our association with Foodbank,” said Julie. “It’s not just about giving cash donations. It’s not just about giving the food, but it’s actually feeling part of the team and feeling part of the community.”

Working alongside long-time volunteers, the Sunny Queen Australia team saw firsthand the impact of food relief and community care.

“For our team to be able to work shoulder to shoulder with the Foodbank team and with local communities who are making sure that that food gets to who it needs to just means the world to us. And we’re so grateful to be a part of it,” Julie added.

Sunny Queen Australia has been an Impact Partner with Foodbank Queensland for over six years, and are committed to providing support for those experiencing food insecurity.

If you are in a position to help Foodbank Queensland provide more food across the state to support Queenslanders in need, please consider joining the fight against hunger as a regular giver.

Everyone deserves dignity

Week of Care

Shining a light on essentials

From July 14 to 20, Week of Care highlights the everyday items many of us take for granted — and the difference they make for people doing it tough. When money is tight, household and personal care items are often the first to go.

Why it matters

Millions of Australians are struggling to put food on the table, with some skipping meals or going whole days without eating. The rising cost of living means more people are turning to food relief, and they’re needing support more often.

At Foodbank, we believe everyone should have access to good food and the dignity that comes with essential personal and household items.

Image of man in kitchen with text overlayed saying 3.4 million households in Australia are food insecure

Everyday items that make a difference

Things like toothbrushes and toothpaste, period products, makeup, moisturiser, nappies and baby wipes shouldn’t be a luxury — they’re basic essentials. For someone who has lost everything in a fire or flood, or is escaping domestic violence, these everyday items can make all the difference in helping them feel clean, cared for and ready to face the day.

That’s what Week of Care is all about — raising awareness of the growing need for personal and household care items, and the real impact they have on people’s lives.

The need is real and growing

The toiletries that are available mean I can treat myself to something that I would not have the financial means to do so at this time and knowing the fact these items are donated makes it even more special.

– Foodbank SA & NT client

    • Of the 3.4 million households experiencing food insecurity, almost half expressed a growing need for personal and household care products from charities and community groups.
    • For families with children, the struggle is even greater. More than half (51%) of food insecure households with kids asked for personal care while close to half asked for cleaning items.
    • The need for period care also remains high, with 26% of food-insecure households seeking access to these essential items.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our partners, more than 1.8 million kilograms of non-food essentials were donated to Foodbank last year. That’s a huge volume of everyday items. All sorted, packed and delivered to people doing it tough right across the country

We’ve highlighted some items we love below.
We hear stories of people rationing pads or using socks or toilet paper to get by. For some, that idea seems unimaginable, yet it’s a harsh reality with severe and hidden consequences that many people across the country face. Period care is a necessity. It helps protect dignity, health and confidence — no one should feel ashamed because they can’t afford it. By making access easier, we can help people feel seen, supported and ready to keep going. “It’s just been a lifesaver to come to a place like this. I just appreciate it so much, it’s been a saviour… I am a strong woman and against all odds, I am always going to find a way to keep going.”
Every baby deserves to be clean, comfortable and cared for so they can thrive. Items like nappies and baby wash are essential for families doing it tough. These products support a child’s health and give parents peace of mind. For parents like Melonie*, having access to baby care essentials brings both relief and dignity. “I’m a single mother on disability having epilepsy. Foodbank means a lot to me and my family. It means we can eat quality food and have baby supplies etc.”
You might not expect us to provide makeup. But for many, it’s more than just appearance. Makeup supports self-care, confidence and a sense of normalcy. For some women, it helps conceal DV bruises or feel ready for work. Access to makeup can offer comfort, control and dignity in tough times. “I have a young son and a mortgage. I was getting bills and debt faster than I could pay. But thanks to Foodbank I was able to feed myself and my son nutritious food with all the staples plus treats and toiletries.”
Taking care of oral health is crucial for overall well-being, from confidence to the ability to eat comfortably. Many of us understand the pain of oral issues and the expense of dental visits, which is why oral care is a daily priority. Unfortunately, for individuals and families like Keith* who struggle to afford food, access to essential grocery items like toothbrushes and toothpaste can be limited. “The toiletries that are available mean I can treat myself to something that I would not have the financial means to do so at this time and knowing the fact these items are donated makes it even more special.”
While cleaning the house or washing dishes may seem like mundane tasks, they are the building blocks of a happy home. They are the first lessons we teach our children, often accompanied by memories of soap suds fights with siblings or lively post-dinner chats. Clean spaces not only promote physical wellbeing but also contribute to our mental and emotional health, making them more than just chores. “Some weeks I don’t have much or sometimes nothing at all to eat or can’t afford cleaning products or self cleansing products. But I can get most general products from Foodbank.”
We can all agree how good it feels to have freshly washed hair. But for many Aussies, essentials like shampoo and conditioner are out of reach. These products are about more than hygiene — they help restore dignity, confidence and a sense of normal. This matters even more when there are children in the household. “I could not afford many items on my shopping list. Meat, fruit and vegetables were always a concern, carefully budgeted. Biscuits and treats were rare as well as many personal items. To discover Foodbank locally is such truly a Godsend. I have never been so content and eaten so well, a big thank you.”
Imagine the worry of not knowing if you can find toilet paper. For many of us, it was a brief experience during the panic buying of the pandemic. But for people struggling right now, this can be a daily stress: “Can I afford toilet paper this week?” “Trying to maintain a house on just a disability pension is difficult and with rising costs, it’s made life just a little bit easier having Foodbank as a backup to get the essentials.”
When budgets are tight, self-care products often get cut from the shopping list. Moisturisers, cleansers, and other products are not luxuries—they are essential for many men, women, teenagers, and children facing tough times. Everyone deserves healthy skin. It impacts confidence and can significantly affect those already struggling to pay the bills. That’s why we partner with companies to ensure a regular supply of products for our charities to offer their communities. “I am a pensioner and renting. I have little left out of my pension for food and personal things. I am so glad I found out about Foodbank. It has helped me so much and I thank you very much.”

THANK YOU

In times of natural disaster, emergency, or just everyday hardship, our personal and household care partners are always ready to lend a hand. We are so grateful for their ongoing support in helping make sure Australians everywhere have access to the essentials they need.

Celebrating 95 Years

At Foodbank Victoria, we’re set to celebrate a significant milestone on 31st July 2025, marking 95 years of dedicated service to the people of Victoria. Founded in 1930 as the State Relief Committee, we’ve played a critical role in supporting Victorians through decades of challenges, from the Great Depression and bushfires to the recent pandemic and ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

Over the past nine and a half decades, we’ve transformed from a provider of emergency food support to the state’s largest and longest-operating food relief organisation. Today, we provide vital support to more than 69,000 people daily via an extensive network of charity partners and over 1,300 schools. In the last year alone, we’ve distributed more than 25 million meals across Victoria.

The 95th anniversary, is not just about numbers. “It’s a reflection of the compassion, dedication, and community spirit that have shaped Foodbank Victoria’s journey,” Dave McNamara, CEO, said. We credit our success to the tireless contributions of volunteers, donors, and partners: every food item gifted, every dollar donated, every box lifted, and every hamper packed has helped build a legacy of hope and resilience.

Looking ahead, we’re using this milestone as a recommitment to our mission: ensuring every Victorian has access to nutritious, culturally appropriate food. As the need for food continues across the state, we emphasise the importance of continued community support.

nom!

building confidence, connection and lifelong healthy habits

Last month our nutritionists travelled more 1,340km to Port Hedland to bring nom! Schools nutrition education to life in the classroom and kitchen.

During the week they visited South Hedland Primary School, Baler Primary School and Strelley Community School, delivering 9 engaging nutrition education and cooking sessions to 159 students from kindy through to year 10.

Through hands-on cooking and practical activities, students explored the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, learnt how to store food safely and discovered the importance of mindful eating.

Each session was packed with real-world skills and delicious meals made straight from our Let’s Cook #2, Best of Healthy Recipes and nom! recipe booklets.

Smiling faces and very engaged kids made the trip extra special for our nutritionists, knowing that they had made a positive impact to so many young students.

We are incredibly grateful to be able to deliver these sessions in regional and remote Western Australia, these sessions aren’t just about cooking. They’re about building confidence, connection and lifelong healthy habits.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn how to eat well, cook safely and feel good about food, thank you Mineral Resources and PLS for supporting the nom! Schools program and helping us reach remote communities with vital food and nutrition education.
