Al’s volunteer story

“I’d come here every day if I could”

Al isn’t your average volunteer. By day, he’s a warehouse whizz, zipping through the aisles of Foodbank Perth as he packs hampers with precision. By night, he’s Al the musician.

For the past 18 months, Al has been a constant presence in our Perth warehouse. For three days each week, he is working hard to ensure our Mobile Foodbank is always stocked with the latest hampers.

Al saw volunteering as a chance to hone his work skills while lending a helping hand to those in need. And trust us, he’s a master packer. Those perfectly stacked beverage packs, the meticulously arranged snack bags, and the breakfast hampers overflowing with goodness – all bear the unmistakable stamp of Al’s care.

But it’s not just about the packing. Al’s passion for helping others shines through in his every interaction. He believes that if you’re lucky enough to be in a position to give back, why wouldn’t you?

Al’s journey with us started with a simple desire – to improve his work skills. But what he discovered was so much more. He found a community where he could contribute his time and talents to make a real difference in the lives of those struggling.

With his human Tetris skills and his big heart, Al is making the world a brighter place, one hamper at a time.

Kurt’s
volunteer story

“I hate to see waste and when you see what is wasted, it’s heartbreaking.”

Every year, 7.6 million tonnes of perfectly good food ends up in landfills. But thanks to heroes like Kurt Papp, countless mouths are fed instead. Kurt dedicates his time to rescuing fresh produce at Perth Markets.

Kurt’s been volunteering for 13 years in fact and has become a vital link in our food rescue chain.

Kurt understands that life can take an unexpected turn better than most. When he fell ill, he needed to turn to income support. So what did he do in return? He stepped up to volunteer and contribute to his community. Kurt made his way to Foodbank and he hasn’t looked back since.

Two years at Welshpool warmed him up, and then the Perth Markets beckoned. Now, he supports our supply chain operations on the ground, coordinating fresh fruit and vegetable deliveries to ensure they get to the people who need them most.

Whether it’s too many veggies or a slightly bruised pallet, Kurt refuses to let good stuff go to waste. He and the Foodbank crew make sure that locally-grown produce finds its way to grateful tummies instead of the landfill.

Now, Kurt isn’t just a face at the markets; he’s practically a legend. Forklift drivers, wholesalers – everyone knows him. Need apples? Kurt knows exactly who to call and in no time, you’ll have a pallet of juicy fruit with a bonus veggie surprise.

So, the next time you munch on a crisp apple or savour some fresh veggies, give a mental high-five to Kurt Papp – the guy making sure good food doesn’t go to waste.

Neto’s story

Neto’s smile radiated warmth as he stood in the Mobile Foodbank queue. But behind it, a deeper story unfolded.

“Foodbank has been helping me for so many years,” he shared. “I’ve been coming here for three and half years, since COVID hit.” The echoes of past hardship reverberated in his words: 12-hour days that barely kept the bills paid, the sudden sting of job loss and the gnawing fear of not having enough for his children.

“It’s not just the food,” Neto continued, eyes meeting yours with a disarming honesty. “When Centrelink wasn’t there, Foodbank was. They don’t judge, they just help. You guys are honestly angels,” his voice dipped, “It alleviated the pressure. Without you, things would have been… bad. Starvation bad.”

From the scars of the El Salvadorian civil war during childhood to the emotional trauma of an assault, he has faced storms that would break most. Yet he stood tall, not with anger, but with quiet determination.

“I was assaulted at work and got PTSD. I couldn’t work in that space anymore. While recovering, I just couldn’t work. I went back to uni so I could change careers and get a job that would support my two children as they grow up,” he explains.

“If it wasn’t for you guys, I wouldn’t be feeding my family. I usually look at my shopping bags and think there’s $300 worth of stuff here for $50.”

Yesterday, Neto donned his graduation gown, the culmination of a gruelling year marked by unwavering grit. Holding his degree, he whispers, “I’m excited to start applying for real jobs again. My dream is to come back and be in a position to give to Foodbank.”

His story isn’t just about overcoming struggles; it’s about the unwavering human spirit rising, refusing to be defined by circumstance.

MEDIA ALERT

“Rent or Food?” Cruel Choice Grips WA as Cost of Living Crisis Spirals

Anna*, a single parent juggling two jobs, clutches her meagre grocery list: “Rent took everything this week. We’ll manage with noodles, but what about my kids?

Her story echoes through thousands of WA households, caught in a cruel vice of soaring rent and empty cupboards. The WACOSS Cost of Living Report shows that surging rent prices are pushing households, particularly those on fixed incomes and government support, to the brink.

388,000 households in our state went hungry this year, with over half of them holding down jobs,” said Kate O’Hara, CEO of Foodbank WA. “This isn’t about a lack of hard work or responsibility; it’s about a system that’s simply failing too many people.

Retailers like Coles and Woolworths are reporting record profits, however, the average single parent family has just $1.40 left over per week after meeting their estimated basic living costs.

Choosing between rent and groceries is a cruel ultimatum forcing people to prioritise survival over well-being. In a country with enough food to feed its entire population three times over, this is completely unacceptable,” said Ms O’Hara.

The Financial Wellbeing Collective, who provides support and services to those in financial hardship, have seen a surge in demand for its services as cost-of-living pressures mount across the community.

General Manager of the Financial Wellbeing Collective Helena Jakupovic says her team have experienced record numbers of people seeking emergency relief, food support and help to pay utility bills.

‘’Our Emergency Relief and Food Access Service received a record 3,761 calls in November – 700 more than November 2022. And for the first two weeks of December, we received a 52% increase in calls on the same time last year,” says Ms Jakupovic.

“What this tells us is that cost of living pressures are making it harder for people to afford necessities like food and utilities.”

This comes as no surprise to The Financial Wellbeing Collective, whose financial counselling clients are deemed to be in housing stress with the ratio of housing cost to income sitting at 38%. Anything over 30% is deemed as housing stress according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

About Foodbank WA

Hello, we’re Foodbank WA. We believe everyone should have access to good quality food. We’re here for the everyday Western Australians who are going without. And it’s our job to help change that.

We provide food and groceries to those who struggle to afford them. We also deliver nutrition education to promote healthy eating and advocate on behalf of people that experience hunger and food insecurity.

We are here to support Western Australians in times of need. We do this through

  • Providing 7.8 million meals last financial year to those who were doing it tough
  • Distributing food and groceries through 335 frontline charities
  • Providing breakfast and fruit to 501 schools feeding 22,000 children weekly
  • Delivering education programs for over 5,200 children, adults and parents

We work with farmers, wholesalers, manufactures and retailers who donate and redirect surplus product to us. This also plays a vital role in tackling food waste and positively contributes to climate change by reducing CO2 emissions arising from landfill.

Our vision is to end hunger in Western Australia by 2030. Our purpose is to Feed. Educate. Advocate.

Bannister Downs Dairy Expands Partnership with Foodbank WA to Support People in Food Stress

For all the years Hancock Prospecting has partnered with award winning Bannister Downs Dairy they have sought to improve the lives of West Australians through the regular donation of milk supplies to the south-west of the state through Foodbank WA’s Bunbury depot.

Having been a long-term supporter, Bannister Downs Dairy will expand their partnership with Foodbank to include a weekly donation of fresh and flavoured milk to Foodbank WA’s Centre for Hunger Relief at Perth Airport. This will then be distributed to all branches across Western Australia.

With the holiday season upon us and sharp increases in the cost of living even more families require support just to meet their basic food needs. Milk is a vital part of a nutritional diet and Foodbank’s current supply doesn’t meet demand.

The Foodbank Hunger Report 2023 highlighted the reality of food stress in West Australia as the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact. The report states that 388,000 households in this State are experiencing moderate to severe food stress. Half of which have children at home.

Kate O’Hara, CEO, Foodbank WA said “We are experiencing unprecedented demand for food relief in the lead up to Christmas. With each interest rate rise we see more and more people reach out for help. We could not support those who rely on us without the support of generous food donors like Bannister Downs Dairy, particularly given the demand we have for milk.

Hancock Agriculture Executive Chairman and Bannister Downs Dairy part owner, Mrs Gina Rinehart AO, and Sue Daubney, Managing Director, Bannister Downs Dairy visited Foodbank WA’s Centre for Hunger Relief to make the offer of increased supplies.

It is increasingly concerning that so many families and children do not have access to food basics. We are pleased that we can extend our support by offering the highest quality and nutrient rich Bannister Downs fresh milk to support the important work Foodbank is doing across the state,” Sue Daubney said.

The ability to provide nutritious and healthy food, including milk, is vital to supporting people struggling to put food on the table. Milk carries nutrients that are often under-consumed – potassium, B12, calcium and vitamin D – along with vitamin A, magnesium, zinc and B1. All important for bone health in growing children and as we age.

In addition to the Bannister partnership, leading iron ore company Roy Hill, majority owned by Hancock Prospecting and Chaired by Mrs Rinehart, has supported Foodbank WA since 2020 through emergency relief hampers provided to Pilbara Families, and is in discussions on an initiative for the region.

Hancock companies operate throughout West Australia and are more than just a company name. We are very proud of the quality of the Bannister Dairy, and other agriculture we produce. However, as Foodbank WA CEO Kate O’Hara clearly says, with each interest rate rise, more and more people are finding it difficult to cope, so more than our milk is of course needed. In these difficult times with costs escalating, it will help many Australians if government burdens, be they fuel tax, licence fees, stamp tax, payroll tax or others were dropped. Which relief on behalf of many West Australians in difficulty, I’d like to ask the governments to undertake,” said Mrs Rinehart.

Megan’s Story – How our Mobile Foodbank Helped Feed her Family

Beverley’s story

A mother’s love and extra cargo for our Mobile Foodbank.

Beverley, a mum of three, knows what it’s like to struggle to make ends meet.

Beverley cycles to our Mobile Foodbank in Rockingham each week to purchase essential groceries for her family. With a 4-year-old daughter and 6 and 8-year old boys to feed, Beverley is determined to provide her children with healthy, nutritious food.

“It’s not always easy,” Beverley admits. “The Mobile Foodbank just allows me to feed my family the nutritious meals they deserve.“

When asked what she would say to someone nervous about accessing food relief, she shared: “If you’re experiencing financial stress and finding it hard to meet everyday needs, come to Foodbank.”

“The Mobile Foodbank is a welcoming and supportive community. No question is too hard to ask.”

The Mobile Foodbank: A Vital Service

Our Mobile Foodbank is a lifeline for those facing food insecurity in our suburbs. Every day, our fleet of trucks travel across Perth and our regions ensuring everyone has access fresh, nutritious food. The reality is that not everyone can make it to our branches, but we don’t believe that means they should go without. With the generous financial support of Budget and Eddie Smith, we bring nourishment and hope to them.

Mobile Foodbanks stock a wide variety of hampers, regularly providing frozen items, dry food hampers, and fresh fruit and vegetables, all at a very low cost.

Megan’s Story – How our Mobile Foodbank Helped Feed her Family

Anne’s
volunteer story

It’s nice to have people you remember and who remember you too, people you can ask how they’re doing and check in, make sure they’re okay.

Anne’s journey into volunteering began with a simple question: “What else am I doing now that I’m retired?” Little did she know the profound impact she’d have.

For Anne, volunteering means more than just helping out. It’s about building meaningful connections with those who rely on our services. In Anne’s eyes, we’re not just distributing groceries; we’re offering a welcoming and friendly face, one that doesn’t pass judgment and asks a single, essential question: “Is everyone at home getting enough to eat?“

The power of that friendly face is something Anne embraces. She shares, “for some people who have fallen on hard times, coming here is one of the few moments they don’t feel ashamed. We can look them in the eye, and all they see is a kind smile back at them.” It’s not just about the food and groceries; it’s about the social interaction, the dignity and human connection we all deserve.

“It’s nice to have people you remember and who remember you too,” Anne reflects. “People you can ask how they’re doing and check in, make sure they’re okay.” Through these interactions, she brings hope and genuine care to our community.

For Anne, volunteering is not only a way to give back but also an opportunity to show appreciation to the people around us. She understands that it’s not just about the community we serve; it’s also about the profound impact volunteering has on her own life. It’s a beautiful circle of giving and receiving, where every smile, every kind word, and every moment of connection create a brighter, more compassionate world.

We are believers that Act, Belong, Commit volunteering is a great way to be active in our community

Kiah’s story

“If we weren’t going to Foodbank, we’d be living off chips, 79 cent biscuits, and 50 cent wafers.”

Meeting Kiah, it’s impossible not to be drawn in by her radiant warmth and unshakable positivity.

A loving mother of three and skilled venue manager, she is the last person you’d imagine facing food insecurity, but life delivered some unexpected challenges that saw her fostering her two nieces and supporting her elderly diabetic father. This is when Kiah turned to us for help.

“I was working as a full-time venue manager but because I’m fostering the two girls as well as my own three children, I’ve had to reduce my hours. I’m not on my good salary anymore, I’m just getting wages, and hours are a little scarce, so things have changed financially for us,” Kiah shared.

Like many Western Australian families, Kiah has a lot of outgoing compared to her incoming. Her rent is $530 a week and she spends $200 a week on fuel to travel to work and back. It doesn’t leave a lot leftover for food.

“If we weren’t going to Foodbank, we’d be living off chips, 79 cent biscuits, and 50 cent wafers. We just wouldn’t be getting the quality I’m able to offer the girls by shopping with Foodbank.”

Thankfully, no matter what, Kiah knows she can always come to our Perth warehouse and afford fresh, healthy food for her children. “It’s been absolutely invaluable to us to keep it reasonable for the food budget. I don’t know how I’d survive feeding six people in this climate without it,” she shared.

Every day we help families like Kiah’s. The cost-of-living crisis has seen the need for food relief soar and we are helping 230 more households every day than last year.

Our commitment is to make a difference in the lives of families like Kiah’s, ensuring they have access to nutritious food and the support they need during challenging times. If you or someone you know would benefit from our services, please reach out. We’re here to help.

Meet Laura
one of our nom! nutritionists

A day in the life of a Public Health Nutritionist

“Everyone needs to eat and deserves to know how eat in a way that is both exciting and fun but supports their health. It’s about empowering people to make informed choices so they can decide what they want to eat and why, rather than it being a choice made for them because they didn’t know,”

When you think of a day in the life of a public health nutritionist, you might imagine someone quietly analysing nutritional data in a sterile lab. However, spend a day with Laura Bryce, one of our Public Health Nutritionists, and you’ll quickly realise that her job is anything but typical.

Laura’s role is a dynamic blend of education, community engagement and hands-on involvement. Join us for a glimpse into the world of a Public Health Nutritionist as we follow Laura on her journey to empower communities with the knowledge and skills to make healthier food choices.

Planning with purpose

Laura’s day begins usually with meticulous planning. Recently she was gearing up for a week-long visit to a remote community. With six nutrition education and cooking sessions on the agenda, her tasks ranged from communicating with local stakeholders to personalising program flyers to ensure the community is well-informed about the upcoming programs.

But Laura’s planning isn’t just about schedules and logistics. It includes meal planning, catering for allergies and scoping out resources. In remote towns where online ordering isn’t an option, Laura personally shops for ingredients at local suppliers. Adaptability is key; if something isn’t available, she pivots to work with what’s at hand. Respect for the local community and their resources is paramount; we never want to deplete the supply of regional stores.

In between planning her upcoming program deliveries, she monitors our School Breakfast Program, making sure their food distribution goes smoothly.

But breakfast isn’t the only thing we’re delivering to schools. Our nom! Schools program is a fun, hands-on adventure where kids get to learn, cook and share healthy food with friends. Our goal is to address the fact that 94% of school kids aren’t getting enough fruits and vegetables.

Thanks to the amazing support of Mineral Resources and Pilbara Minerals, nom! Schools is spreading healthy eating to 40 schools across Bunbury, Geraldton, Perth and the Pilbara. This isn’t just about food, it’s about giving kids the power to make healthy choices for life.

Face-to-face impact

Face-to-face interactions are at the heart of Laura’s work. On these days, she loads up her trolley with thoughtfully curated resources, drives to the community centre or school and sets up the cooking stations.

The nutrition education sessions are tailored to each group’s needs and last for 30 to 60 minutes, covering essential topics like food safety, knife handling, portion control, meal planning and budgeting. For Laura, it’s about empowering participants with knowledge that can lead to both better health and financial outcomes.

“Everyone needs to eat and deserves to know how eat in a way that is both exciting and fun but supports their health. It’s about empowering people to make informed choices so they can decide what they want to eat and why, rather than it being a choice made for them because they didn’t know,” shares Laura.

After the education component, participants get hands-on with cooking, working in small groups or pairs at recipe stations.

Challenges and rewards

Laura acknowledges that her job comes with unique challenges:

“As our work is community-based, the main challenge is that each community group is different. They might be culturally and linguistically diverse, they may have low written comprehension, or they might simply not have had any exposure to cooking. It’s our job to find fun and engaging ways to deliver the skills and knowledge they need in a way that works for them.”

The solution? Planning, communication and creative thinking.

“Planning is key,” Laura says. “Different groups and different locations pose different challenges, and the way we get around it is through good planning. We work closely with the host to ensure we’re meeting the needs of their community group and participants.“

Inspiring positive change

For the children and youth she primarily works with, this hands-on experience is a life-changing. Some may not have the resources, trust or opportunity to cook at home. But here, they learn to use a knife safely, read a recipe and become the main contributors to their meals. Their sense of accomplishment is heartwarming.

And sometimes, it’s the simplest feedback that brings the most joy. Laura recalls an encounter at a Kimberley shopping centre after hosting a school session earlier that day where a student approached proudly told her, “We’re going to make Mean Green Curry tonight.” Moments like these are the best feedback a Public Health Nutritionist could ask for.

Laura’s journey is an inspiring reminder that the path to better health and wellbeing begins with knowledge and empowerment. Through her tireless efforts, she’s sowing the seeds of positive change, one meal at a time.

Food mood connection

The relationship between nutrition and mental health

Picture this: a busy morning rush, deadlines looming, and your stomach growling for attention. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, we often forget that what we put on our plates doesn’t just impact our physical health but plays a potential role in our mental well-being too. After coming together to observe R U OK? Day, let’s dive into the wonderful world of nutrition and its impact on our mental health.

We all know the saying, “You are what you eat”, but have you ever thought about how it applies to your mood and emotions? It turns out the food choices we make may significantly influence how we feel, think, and cope with life’s challenges.

The Food-Mood Connection

First, let’s talk about the magical trio: serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. These are neurotransmitters that regulate our mood and emotions. Foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids are like fuel for these neurotransmitters. For instance, complex carbohydrates (yes, that includes whole grains and veggies) can boost serotonin levels, the “feel-good” neurotransmitter. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish like salmon and walnuts have been linked to lower rates of depression and anxiety. And don’t forget about antioxidants from fruits and veggies, which help protect your brain cells from oxidative stress.

The Gut-Brain Connection

Next in line is the gut-brain connection. Your gut and brain are in constant communication, and research suggest that the state of your gut may significantly impact your mental health. Your gut is like a second brain, with millions of neurons sending signals to your actual brain.

Probiotics, those friendly bacteria found in yogurt and other fermented foods, can support a healthy gut and potentially reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Fibre-rich foods, like beans and lentils, are like a red carpet for good gut bacteria, improving overall gut health and potentially enhancing mood.

Eating for Resilience

As we navigate life’s ups and downs, building mental resilience is crucial. And guess what? Nutrition can play a role here too. Eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats provides your brain with the nutrients it needs for optimal functioning, giving us a better chance to handle stress and maintain emotional balance.

Daily food choices can be a powerful tool in our mental health toolkit. So, take a moment today to check in with yourself and your loved ones, and while you’re at it, consider what’s on your plate. Together, we can build a happier, healthier, and more resilient community, one meal at a time.

At Foodbank WA we offer a range of nutrition education and cooking programs to help you learn how to eat healthy meals on a budget. Check out our nom! programs.
