Gleneagles Secondary College: Stirring Up Success and Building Bonds

The School Breakfast Clubs Program Cooking Classes at Gleneagles Secondary College have been a hit!

It’s not just about learning to cook; it’s about bringing people together and creating lasting connections. The program has added even more variety to Gleneagles’ offering, helping staff, students, and parents build stronger bonds.

Teachers and staff have had the chance to get to know students and their families better, making the school feel even more like a supportive and inclusive community. Plus, students have made new friends, boosting their social skills and sense of belonging.

Why Gleneagles loved it

Gleneagles Secondary College signed up to the Cooking Classes program to build stronger relationships within the school community. “We thought it was a great chance to build relationships.” said Sabrina, Youth Support Officer. “It also educates families on the benefits of healthy eating and supports those families with extra food.”  The take home hampers provide families with nutritious ingredients, helping put what they learn in class into practice at home.

Why the families loved it

Families love joining the Cooking Classes because it’s a special time to bond. With everyone’s busy schedules, it can be hard to find quality time together. The classes give parents and kids a chance to cook side by side, strengthening their relationships and creating wonderful memories.

“We don’t get to do too much together” said Candice, mum of year seven student, Mya. “Mya’s younger brother takes up a lot of my spare time, so this was a great way to do something that’s just us”.

Students enjoy the Cooking Classes for many reasons. They learn how to cook, gain confidence in the kitchen, and get to take charge. This sense of ownership and responsibility is empowering, and it lets them guide their parents through the cooking process, flipping the usual roles and building mutual respect.

Marwa, who is currently in Year 12 said she signed up to take part in Cooking Classes as she enjoys cooking and it “helps her de-stress”, while Lena, Year 7, signed up with mum to make new friends at the school.

Youth Support Officer, Sabrina, shared touching stories from families about how the program has made a difference. One family, who used to rely on take away, now cooks healthy meals together at home. This change not only improves their nutrition but also helps their child develop better eating habits. Another family shared that dad had never cooked before, but through the program, he learned to cook with his daughter, creating a special bond and gaining a valuable new skill.

Cooking at home

The families really appreciated the food hampers. Many have tried the recipes provided, as well as mixing it up with some of their own touches, while others are still exploring them. Budding chef Rida mixed it up, substituting some of the ingredients in the Rice Paper Rolls take home hamper to make a fusion meal for the family!

The Cooking Class program at Gleneagles Secondary College has had a wonderful impact on the students and their families. By bringing them together, promoting healthy eating, and teaching valuable skills, it is an essential part of the school’s efforts to support and engage families.

Community Partner Story Goodness Enterprises

Sharing food and empowering the community of Ipswich and surrounds is at the heart of Goodness Enterprises. Whether it’s cooking thousands of meals each week, assembling hampers for families or distributing fresh produce to those in need, the goal is the same – making sure no one goes hungry and create opportunities for goodness.

Every inch of Goodness Enterprises is alive with energy. In the kitchen, volunteers and trainees are busy preparing thousands of meals, ensuring no food goes to waste. The co-op shelves are restocked as fast as they are emptied, providing families with affordable groceries. Outside, a team works on an ambitious conservation project, restoring a former koala corridor that had been lost to development.

“It’s massive what we are doing here,” Greg, General Manager at Goodness Enterprises shares, gesturing to the growing operation, “and that is why we need whatever help we can get.”

The centre runs like a well-oiled machine, but behind the efficiency is a constant battle to stretch every dollar. “We’re always trying to work out how we can make one dollar turn into ten,” Greg explains. “That’s the attitude. If we sell meals through the kitchen, that’s money we can put back into food for the co-op. It’s about making it work for as many people as possible.”

With expansion plans already in action, they hope to increase their capacity to store food to be able to support more people in their community. “We don’t refuse donations because you never know what you’ll get. We take everything, sort through it, and find a way to use it,” he shares. Through great partnerships with local producers, Foodbank Queensland, local farmers and other partners, Goodness Enterprises has created a circular system to help people.

Demand continues to rise. “The number of people coming through continues to grow, and the diversity of those seeking help is increasing.” Families and communities who have never sought food relief before are now feeling the pinch of the rising cost of groceries and food. The centre operates a membership-based co-op, offering lifetime access to affordable groceries for just $15. “Giving people dignity and choice is a core part of what we do,” says Greg.

Beyond food relief, Goodness Enterprises transforms lives through training programs. “We have five different Certificate I programs that we offer, running twice a year to help long-term unemployed people and young people gain skills and experience.” Their work-for-skills program boasts an 86% success rate in helping trainees secure jobs – well above the industry standard of 55%. Greg shares, “Our goal is not just to feed people, but to give them purpose.”

The energy and enthusiasm to create more goodness is undeniable. Growth and finding more ways to assist their community define the centre’s daily operations, with every effort focused on helping more people in need. For their whole team, the mission is clear. “We empower people for life – socially, economically, environmentally and spiritually.”

If you are in a position to help Foodbank Queensland provide more food across the state to support Queenslanders in need, please consider joining the fight against hunger as a regular giver.

Corporate partners supporting local communities

South32, Southern Ports and Talison Lithium step up to support their local communities.

The cost-of-living crisis continues to place a significant strain on families and individuals in Western Australia.

The cost of groceries and utility bills are constantly rising, with people having to make near-impossible decisions to ensure they keep a roof over their heads.

These circumstances are pushing many Western Australians into financial stress, and they are struggling to feed themselves and their families. Foodbank WA’s regional branches, in particular, are overwhelmed, with logistical and transportation issues adding to the increase in foot traffic.

In 2024 the Foodbank Bunbury branch experienced a 22% increase in demand compared to the same period 2023.

Thanks to South32, Southern Ports and Talison Lithium, longstanding Foodbank WA supporters and proud Bunbury branch partners, we have been able to increase the distribution of food by the branch, supporting Bunbury’s Mobile Foodbank for the southwest region and increasing the availability of fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy requirements for the School Breakfast Program.

The Foodbank Bunbury branch is on track to provide more than last year’s total of 1,463,968 meals this year to vulnerable individuals and families within the region through 61 charity partners and 63 schools.

In May alone we provided 190,372 meals to the community including breakfast items to schools registered with the School Breakfast Program.

Foodbank WA’s Hunger Report for 2024 showed that across Australia Food insecurity is being felt more acutely in the regions (37%) compared to metropolitan areas.

In WA, more than 370,000 households experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months.

“We are so grateful for the support of South32, Southern Ports and Talison Lithium. Their funding will enable our Bunbury branch to service the most vulnerable members of South West of WA community and ensure that we are in a good operational and service position to cover the anticipated increase in need in the coming weeks and months. Their support will also allow us to purchase the resources necessary to facilitate current and future food programs.”

South32, Southern Ports and Talison Lithium’s commitment to support those in their local area of operations, demonstrates their passion and commitment to deliver positive long-lasting outcomes that enrich the South West community.” Said Kate O’Hara Foodbank WA CEO.

Food Assistance is available to anyone struggling to access or afford food. Phone the Emergency Relief & Food Assistance Hotline 1800 979 777, Monday to Friday 9.00am – 5.00pm.

Building healthy habits with
nom! Children

For many parents, introducing solids and navigating children’s nutrition can be a daunting experience.

nom.org.au

From understanding food labels to managing mealtimes with a fussy eater, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s where our nom! Children program makes a difference – helping parents gain confidence in feeding their little ones while making healthy eating easier for the whole family.

Building confidence and healthy habits

Sara, who attended the nom! Children program through Parenting Connection in Clarkson, shared how the program has had a positive impact on her family.

The nom! Children program is supported through the generosity of Hawaiian, Channel 7 Telethon Trust and Roy Hill.

Understanding food labels: A game-changer

One of the most eye-opening moments for Sara came during a session on reading food labels. Participants were encouraged to bring in products from home and Sara brought her favourite “healthy” breakfast granola – only to discover it contained far more sugar than she had expected.

“We compared products, looking at sugars, fibre and how they’re marketed. I was shocked by how much sugar was actually in my breakfast.”

A small wallet-sized nutrition guide provided during the session has since become an essential tool for Sara when shopping.

“It very simply shows some of the nutrition info with green smiley, red frown or yellow neutral faces. It has been so helpful in choosing better options for my family.”

Managing mealtime stress that children’s appetites naturally change from day to day

Another key takeaway for Sara was the reassurance that children’s appetites naturally change and that it’s okay if they don’t eat everything on their plate.

“Children won’t starve if they don’t eat a meal and you don’t need to offer ten different choices just to get them to eat. My little one had only been on solids for a few months and I was always worried about making sure he ate enough – especially since half of it ended up on the floor!”

The support and advice from other parents in the program helped her feel more confident, not only about introducing new foods but also in understanding her child’s evolving eating habits.

A supportive space for parents

For Sara, one of the biggest impacts of the nom! Children program was the confidence she gained from being around other parents.

I had extreme anxiety about solids and choking, but being in a room with parents who had been in my shoes really eased my worries. I was able to ask for advice on whether certain foods were appropriate for his age and how to modify them to suit his abilities.”

This peer support played a crucial role in helping her feel more prepared and reassured about her child’s nutrition journey.

Beyond boosting her confidence, the program also introduced Sara to simple, budget-friendly meals that made cooking easier and more affordable, especially as the cost of living continues to rise. She found the quick, inexpensive recipes a great relief, with many vegetarian options being surprisingly filling and affordable.

Since completing the program, Sara’s family has made significant changes, particularly in reducing their sugar intake – a priority after her husband’s recent diagnosis of a nerve issue that worsens with sugar consumption.

“The nutrition guide has been a huge help in comparing products. I also want to set a good example for Jareth and improve my own health along the way.”

Participants also received practical tools, including a healthy eating plate for kids and a meal planner magnet, which have helped them maintain healthier eating habits.

“These simple tools have been amazing and made meal planning so much easier!”

Through nutrition education, hands-on learning and a strong support network, the nom! Children program has given Sara and her family the confidence to make better food choices, reduce stress around mealtimes, and embrace healthy eating for the long term.

Food Security Strategy Crucial for Australia’s Hunger Problem

4 March 2025, Sydney: Foodbank Australia has welcomed today’s commitment that a re-elected Labor Government will develop a new, National Food Security Strategy.

Foodbank has been calling for a bipartisan, whole-of-government approach to food security for almost a decade, recognising the importance of a forward-looking strategy to underpin the efforts of the public, private and non-profit sectors on this issue.

“Every Australian should have reliable access to healthy, culturally appropriate food, but this is not the case for more than 3 millionhouseholds across the country”, Foodbank Australia CEO, Brianna Casey AM said today.

“With a cyclone barrelling towards South-East Queensland, heatwaves across much of northern Australia and fires still burning in Victoria and Tasmania, the resilience of our food systems is being continually tested,” Ms Casey said. “Whether triggered by natural disasters, geopolitical instability or workforce issues, supply chain disruption is now the norm, and the impacts are only adding to the strain on household budgets”.

The Foodbank Hunger Report 2024 revealed that food insecurity is no longer just a low-income household problem. One in 5 median income households is now experiencing food insecurity, with 10% of these median income households severely food insecure, meaning they are skipping meals and even going entire days without eating to ensure they can keep a roof over their heads.

“Foodbank is already sourcing 252,000 meals a day and supporting more than a million people a month, but despite our best efforts, we simply cannot keep up with the demand for food relief across Australia,” Ms Casey said.

“The cost-of-living crisis not only drives up demand for food relief, with more and more households struggling with the increased costs of food, housing and utilities, but also impacts Foodbank’s supply,” Ms Casey explained. “The cost of sourcing, storing and transporting essential food relief is increasing by the day and simply cannot be sustained at current funding levels.”

“We have called for strong leadership on food security, with strong policies backed by meaningful investment” Ms Casey said. “A National Food Security Strategy is a crucial first step towards securing food security for every Australian, no matter their circumstances and a positive sign of things to come”.

What a cracking result – YOU helped create 5.4 million seats at our Christmas table.

It was always going to take a Hercules sized response from our community to support the epic scale of need leading into Christmas (try 69,000 people a day), but we didn’t expect such bedazzling feats of generosity.

Like ABC Melbourne host Sammy J who kayaked the mighty Yarra River as part of ABC Gives to Foodbank to help put 700,000 meals on awfully empty Christmas tables.

Cecilia and her son at a Foodbank market

Speaking of heart, 295 of you set up Virtual Christmas tables online for Foodbank including a couple hosted by our big-hearted friends Zoe Foster Blake and Melissa Leong.

All up we raised over 5.4 million seats in our ’24 Christmas Appeal…and by seats, we mean beautiful, healthy meals delivered with YOUR help.

Victorians truly are the most generous people on earth (nah, we’re not biased).

Cecilia and her son (pictured above) were so overwhelmed by the kindness, community spirit and help from our volunteer Edi (who loaded bags and boxes into their boot without raising a sweat) at our Christmas Market they couldn’t stop handing out hugs – including an extra special one just for YOU.

“Thank you so much. You’ve been wonderful… I can’t tell you what this food means,” Cecilia told us.

Kids grow quickly, and so does the School Breakfast Clubs Program

It’s been a whirlwind of excitement for the School Breakfast Clubs Program over the past few months, and we’re thrilled to share the news – more schools, more students, and more healthy food!

The program is making waves across Victoria, with 49% of new schools in metropolitan areas and 51% in regional areas – a nice even mix that’s slowly working towards covering all corners of the state.

But it’s not just about the numbers, it’s about the real impact happening in school hallways and classrooms. In the most recent quarter, the program served up a whopping 903,314 net kilograms of food, marking an 8.6% increase on the previous quarter. That’s a whole lot of breakfasts fuelling students for a busy day ahead! And it doesn’t stop there.

The Home Food Packs program has seen a massive 57% increase in food distributed to school families over the last quarter, meeting an ever-growing need for food support in communities across Victoria beyond the classroom. These packs are making a tangible difference, providing families with the essentials they need and ensuring more people have access to healthy food.

AND THE REAL CHERRY ON TOP? THE INCREASE IN FRESH FOOD! IN TERM 4 2024, THE PROGRAM SAW A 14% JUMP IN FRESH FOOD DISTRIBUTION ON TERM 4 IN 2023 – TALK ABOUT SERVING UP HEALTHY MEALS THAT MAKE A LASTING IMPACT.

As the School Breakfast Clubs Program continues to grow, we’re not just seeing more food being served; we’re seeing a ripple effect that’s reaching deeper into schools and communities.

With every new school that joins, and every extra kilo of food distributed, we’re one step closer to ensuring every student—no matter where they are—has access to the healthy fuel they need for an awesome day of learning and growing.

Here’s to even bigger things ahead!

Every $1 donated creates 2 meals

We’ll be turning 5 million kilos of ‘waste’ into nourishing food over the next 3 years!

Fact is Australia produces MORE than enough food to feed everyone. In Victoria alone, 125,000 tonnes of edible fruit and veg is lost on farms every year.

Why? When crops do exceptionally well, growers end up with a surplus they can’t sell – and can’t afford to transport to charities like ours.

Of course, WE want that surplus here at Foodbank…so our unique approach to sourcing is making sure that’s happening.

Working alongside farmers, growers and packing houses to understand how their season is shaping up, we provide innovative and sustainable ways to secure any surplus – supplying collection bins, and finding empty space on trucks to move the produce.

Growers can then donate the product in a really positive way. Tangibly helping Victorians, without the cost of getting the food to us. Wins all round

A supermarket where everything’s special

Imagine not being able to feed your family. Such a stressful, lonely place to be.

Then you hear about a cool new supermarket in your neighbourhood… where you can fill a trolley to help nourish the people you love AND it’s completely free of charge.

Ta da. We’ve just opened a supermarket EXACTLY like that at our Morwell and Ballarat Community Food Centres providing 100s OF LOCAL FAMILIES PER WEEK with trolleys full of fresh produce, dairy and all their pantry essentials.

Putting the ‘super’ back into supermarket for hard hit regional communities – with YOUR support.

Foodbank community supermarket

In Ballarat, our supermarket opened in March last year with a pilot program run in partnership with our friends at Federation Uni for students experiencing severe hardship. It has since supported over 1,000 young people living in and around Ballarat.

Now, the supermarket is open to local families who are referred through our local charity partners, so they can do their weekly shop minus the unimaginable stress of wondering how to feed their kids on a non-existent food budget.

Over in Morwell, we opened our supermarket at the beginning of December last year, launching a 16 week pilot program in collaboration with two of our local charity partners. The program gave 50 families a week living in Morwell and surrounding areas easy access to healthy food leading up to that painful Christmas period and is now continuing right through into Autumn.

It’s been a huge success so far, with each family getting their hands on 25kg of food per visit – enough to fill a whole trolley!

What are the supermarkets like?

Well, shoppers get to select their food from baskets brimming with fresh seasonal fruit and veggies, bays stacked with fresh bread, fridges stocked with yoghurt and milk, and aisles full of pantry staples like pasta, rice, cereal, and cans of tuna and legumes. It’s exactly the same as shopping at your local supermarket, but without the cost!

We’re so grateful to YOU for helping provide 100s of regional families with the most caring supermarkets on the planet

Every $1 donated is 2 meals created

Meet the Pink Ladies
volunteer story

Talk about passion, hard work and persistence.

The Pink Ladies, as they are now known, are a team of amazing and driven volunteers in Bunbury who have helped to roll out the Mobile Foodbank in Bunbury.

The evolution of Mobile Foodbank in Bunbury began in 2021 with deliveries direct to Community Resource Centres using the branches’ bundles as stock.  Fast forward to the end of 2022 and the branch received their little van and started scouting for Mobile Foodbank locations.

The branch started the Mobile Foodbank runs in 2023 starting out small, with some local sites and then expanding their reach further.

The project was driven by Lois and Debbie with Rachael joined them a little later. Their pink hi-vis distinguished them from everyone else and gave them their much-loved nickname.

They have built up a grateful client base that now look forward to them coming to their towns and they are very appreciative of the service.

The Pink Ladies have put together a very efficient service still keeping a personal touch and feel.

The Pink Ladies are also joined on occasion by Terry and Ray who can put a little bit of extra muscle to work.

Thank you Pink Ladies, we love your passion!
