Ordinary people,
extraordinary impact

Volunteers are often thought to be the lifeblood for a not-for-profit organisation, contributing time, skills and passion that are irreplaceable.

During Volunteer Week, we celebrate all our wonderful volunteers – without which we couldn’t do what we do each day.

We understand that walking into Foodbank for the first time can feel overwhelming – for a customer, especially a new customer, it can be filled with uncertainty, shame and fear of judgement. It’s a very vulnerable moment that takes immense courage and strength.

Often, a customer’s first interaction when they arrive is with a volunteer, not a paid member of staff, and it’s a job that all of our volunteers on the front-line treat seriously with compassion, kindness and patience.

Sam has been a volunteer with Foodbank WA since the beginning of the year and seeing the energy that sparkles behind every smile, you can see why she is so popular with customers old and new.

Sam is between jobs in Administration and Customer Service, and after getting to chat to some of the volunteers when she would bring her mum in for her weekly shop at Foodbank, she thought she would try her hand at joining our amazing and diverse team of volunteers. Initially Sam was in one day, then two then three and now, sometimes five days – depending on how busy the Perth branch is.

Sam says that volunteering at Foodbank is a deeply rewarding experience that goes beyond simply giving her time. It offers her chance to make a real difference to the lives of people who are facing hunger and often, a myriad of other issues.

“Each shift brings me a sense of purpose, knowing my efforts help provide meals to those in need. Volunteering at Foodbank brings me a sense of empathy, gratitude, and a stronger connection to my community. It’s inspiring to work alongside passionate volunteers and staff, all united by a common goal of helping others.” Sam continued.

Being in a front-line position and dealing with vulnerable and stressed individuals certainly takes skill and heart in equal measure.

“As a volunteer, I see how Foodbank as a lifeline to countless families doing it tough. The service it provides goes far beyond food – it offers dignity, hope and stability during difficult times. Every shift I do I witness the incredible impact the organisation makes, not just filling pantries but building stronger communities. I’m proud to contribute to that.”

Something simple such as greeting a customer by their first name or simply asking ‘how are you today’ has the power to improve someone’s day. A volunteer’s smile may be the only smile that person gets that day. We (the volunteers) are all conscious of that and want to create a positive experience where we can.

“The gratitude expressed by our customers is often the most impactful part of my day. I am happy I can make even a small positive difference to someone’s life. I take pride in knowing that I can help a customer feel comfortable and not judged when they come here. In giving your time, you receive something invaluable in return – a renewed perspective and the fulfillment that comes from helping others in a meaningful and often life-changing way. It makes me value what I have.” Sam said.

Volunteers bring immeasurable benefits to our organisation, allowing us to expand services, reach more people and achieve our mission to Feed Educate and Advocate, without the financial burden of hiring additional staff. Each volunteer brings a new and fresh perspective, which both cultivates and encourages innovation and community engagement.

Ultimately, the true value of volunteers lies not only in the work that they do but in the spirit of generosity and shared purpose they bring – turning collective goodwill into meaningful action and lasting change.

A heartfelt thank you all of our volunteers past and present. We thank you for weaving kindness hope and heart into everything you do in our community.

The surprising group facing a
lack of food in Australia

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to ravage households across the country, it’s difficult to assess each and every demographic to respond to changes in demand for assistance.

Thanks to Allianz Partners’ inaugural State of Student Healthcare Report, they can reveal that what seems like an often-overlooked groups of people are really struggling. Their report reveals that more than a third of international students in Australia can’t afford to eat fresh fruit and vegetables – despite contributing a huge $34 billion into Australia’s economy each year.

According to statistics from Allianz Partners, 74% of students are experiencing financial pressure and are increasingly facing shortages of fresh, healthy and nutritious food as they battle ongoing food insecurity due to the cost-of-living crisis.

To combat this growing crisis, Allianz Partners partnered with Foodbank Australia, the nation’s largest food relief organisation, to tackle this issue country-wide.

In July last year, Allianz Partners and Foodbank Australia launched the first international student food market at UNSW, one of eight activations at university campuses across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. The partnership provides essential food supplies and raises awareness about the diverse faces of food insecurity.

The first university food market day in WA was held at Murdoch University in mid-April and assisted almost 600 students. More than 4000 kilos of fruit, vegetables and nonperishables were distributed on the day.

Foodbank WA experienced a 15% increase in customers in the last quarter compared to the same time last year – households are struggling, and it is no different for international students studying here, many of who are a long way from home and their support networks.

The markets offered access to a variety of nutritious offerings including fresh fruit and vegetables and pantry products. Each student was also able to access a number of other nutritious food products at no cost.

By shining a light on the hidden struggle of international students facing food insecurity, Foodbank Australia and Allianz Partners we hope to raise awareness about the diverse faces of food insecurity and encourage dialogue and support for international students.

Watch this space for more university food market days in WA and around Australia.

Fresh linen
restores hope

For many people changing the linen weekly is more of a chore than a comfort. Can you imagine what it would be like not to have any linen at all? Fresh or not – none at all.

While our purpose is to Feed. Educate. Advocate., we have over the years, come to act as a conduit between many different agencies, organisations and businesses and when we hear about an opportunity to rescue or reuse something that will make a positive difference in someone’s life, we jump at the chance.

Back in February we were happy to receive a very kind donation of linen that was donated by BHP Western Australia and Compass Group AUS

This amazing donation of linen meant that we could offer over 74 of our agency partners great linen packs that certainly don’t come around often! With the help of Jason Windows who supplied the packaging and created a rotating roster of 2-hour shifts of their staff who packaged up all of the linen - an incredible total of 3,344 packs that have now been distributed to our agencies all over WA.

Fresh linen can make a profound difference in the life of someone who has none. For people experiencing homelessness or living in poverty, access to clean bedding is often a luxury out of reach. Sleeping on the bare ground or using worn-out fabrics or sometimes even soiled fabrics can lead to discomfort, poor hygiene, and even health issues. Fresh linen offers not just physical relief, but emotional comfort as well. It provides a sense of dignity, warmth, and normalcy – small things that many take for granted but are deeply meaningful to those without them.

We were so delighted to hear that the Perth Integrated Health Group, through its Communities Team and in conjunction with the NDIS, were able to distribute the linen to their clients, especially in the lead up to cooler days and nights. The feedback we have received has been very positive with recipients expressing their heartfelt thanks and appreciation. We have heard a number of amazing comments such as how soft and usable the products are to their daily lives.

Perth Integrated Health Group were also able to extend this linen project to two external housing providers with whom they work closely, who themselves have then gifted these packs to the people within their various accommodation complexes in the Perth metropolitan region.

Clean sheets and linen can promote better sleep, which is vital for physical and mental well-being. The scent and softness of fresh linen can bring calm and reassurance, helping someone feel cared for, even if just for a moment. It’s more than fabric – it’s a message that says, “You matter” and they restore a sense of humanity. In this way, fresh linen becomes a symbol of hope and respect, reminding people that they are not invisible, and that a better, more comfortable future is possible.

Sometimes, the smallest comforts can have the greatest impact.

We were so thrilled to be a part of this project. Thank you BHP, Compass Group and Jason Windows for making this project possible.

Together with Telethon, we are changing lives

Have you ever felt the power of a community that truly cares? That’s exactly how we felt attending Telethon’s Annual Giving Celebration breakfast in April.

In what was a truly inspiring morning, Telethon revealed Foodbank WA as one of the 161 beneficiaries, children’s charities, and organisations that will receive crucial funding to make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable children and families across Western Australia.

We are delighted and honoured to be a beneficiary of Telethon, as their support helps us to build a better future for Western Australian Kids though our nom! Children program and School Breakfast Program.

Our nom! Children program is tailored for parents with young children (0-5 years) helping them to guide their kids to eat well, gain confidence to cook healthy meals on a budget and make mealtimes less stressful.

A vital outcome of the program is improved confidence, knowledge, and food literacy skills for families. Good nutrition during early childhood has been recognised as a critical indicator for optimal health, growth, and cognitive development, from conception to five years.

We are thrilled that Telethon have also very generously committed to contributing to the provision of food to schools for our School Breakfast Program until the end of 2025, which represents an incredible 18 years of continuous Telethon support.

Our School Breakfast Program started in 2001 with a group of just 17 schools. For 25 years we have been providing WA schools with access to breakfast foods to ensure students who come to school hungry have a nutritious meal before entering the classroom.  But we know the Program is more than just providing a healthy breakfast, it supports concentration and in-class engagement, student behaviour, academic outcomes and mental health and teacher-student relations.

In 2024, a record 552 schools across the state registered for the Program. While our team is thrilled to reach new schools and provide this service to more students, it is a bittersweet achievement. That’s 552 schools who see children coming to school hungry. 552 schools who recognise the difference that one meal can make. 552 schools where students need help, to get food in their tummies for better nutrition, health, and academic outcomes.

We are committed to working towards ending hunger and nourishing young minds with Telethons support.

Thank you, Telethon, together we are feeding change right here in WA.

Foodbank Agency Pantry Project

The Foodbank Agency Pantry has been a project we have been working on behind the scenes for some time now.

The initiative is a response to the cost-of-living crisis which is placing immense pressure on communities – we acknowledge the increasing demand for essential food items, and want to make access to bulk essential food items easier and to provide a more robust offering.

To help support this additional need across community, we are looking to see how we can better support agencies by building capacity across the food relief network in Western Australia. This has including reviewing our operations and services.

The Foodbank Agency Pantry will give you, our partners, access to a range of in-demand pantry products at a reduced cost, helping you to get more from sometimes very limited budgets, to help support your own food relief services.

Currently the Foodbank Agency Pantry program has 29 products which include staples such as peanut butter, plain and self-raising flour, oats, tuna in spring water, a variety of canned vegetables SPC Spaghetti and baked beans, penne pasta and long-life milk, just to name a few.

These products are now available to purchase in bulk with reduced pricing, usually 10-20% under the recommended retail price, and where possible, many are below our in-branch pricing.

Orders can be placed weekly using an order form available by contacting Candice.

Pricing is excluding delivery, but we have several different options, including a click and collect model, which we can discuss with you.

Earlier this year we sent out an expression of interest where we looked to understand which of the 29 products in our core range you found were essential and also listed a range of non-core products, which has previously been requested by some agencies.

In 2026, we hope to extend the Foodbank Agency Pantry range, with consideration of your feedback, and hope to increase the range of 29 core products to many more, which will be available via the Foodbank Agency Pantry ordering process.

We want to thank those of you who responded, your feedback will help us to understand your interest and support.

We are currently reviewing your responses and hope to report back to you with our findings and recommendations in our next newsletter.

In the meantime, if you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact candice.long@foodbankwa.org.au.

Shane’s story

“We’ve always done fairly well, you know, at least average, financially, and we have never been in this kind of position.”

“We give to a lot of charities as well. We never thought that we’d have to be on the receiving end of it. That was quite difficult.”

Finding Foodbank meant finding a safety net

Shane and Sarah are brave, hardworking and generous people. They worked hard to ensure they have everything they needed for their family.

Always a ‘doer’ and wanting to ensure their family’s financial security, Shane and Sarah decided to start their own business together. They meticulously wrote their business plan, raised their capital and invested all their savings, some of which was to eventually pay for their much-anticipated wedding.

A part of the business plan included that Sarah would continue to work full-time, while Shane worked part-time and set-up their company.

They were both so excited for what the future held for them, until the second day of trading, that is. That’s when Sarah lost her job, and they felt their lives begin to unravel.

They had invested everything they had into their company, and the nature of their business meant it would take months and months for them to get invoices paid once clients were signed up. As a result, they, by their own admission ended up in in a hole pretty quickly.

That’s when Shane’s mother suggested they reach out to Foodbank.

Shane was very resistant to asking for help in the beginning, his pride got in the way and he didn’t want to admit that they needed help.

“We’ve always done fairly well, you know, at least average, financially, and we have never been in this kind of position. We give to a lot of charities as well. We never thought that we’d have to be on the receiving end of it. That was quite difficult.”

Speaking of Foodbank, Shane said, “The beautiful thing about this place, it’s all great quality stuff at the prices that I remember things being in the 90s, when you could support a household with two or three kids on one, nine to five income, you know. It’s just a different world now.”

A cost-of-living crisis which is ravaging our country means that nobody is immune to finding themselves in a tricky financial situation. It’s impacting most people to varying degrees.

For Shane and his family, coming to Foodbank was the difference between having to sell one or even both of their cars and meant they and their children had access to healthy nutritious food and didn’t feel the full impact of the severity of the family’s financial situation.

It meant they had a safety net of sorts, with budget friendly prices at Foodbank meaning they could free up more of their very limited budget to pay for other essentials, such as house and car repayments, utility and power bills and things for their growing children, fearing they would be teased if they were seen to be different at school.

Asked what advice he would give to anyone in a similar position Shane said that you need to swallow your pride and use the help before you get past the point of no return financially.

“I never thought that I’d be in the position where I needed this. It’s not just for homeless people. It’s not just for people below the poverty line. If you’ve worked really hard to get to where you are in life, and because of situations that can often be out of your control, if everything is going to come crashing down, everything that you’ve worked for – this place is here to provide that kind of stepping stone or, just that bit of support, while you’re trying to sort everything out and bring everything back to homeostasis.”

A big believer in giving back, Shane said that even though finances go up and down, he and Sarah had always made a point of maintaining their giving to charity even when things got quite tough.

For Shane and Sarah’s family, Foodbank was the difference between falling deeper and deeper into financial hardship and finding the will to keep fighting.

They aren’t entirely out of the woods yet by any stretch of the means, but they are definitely on the up and up. They are finally receiving the invoiced fees from their business which they have been working on for months, which means there’s definitely a light at the end of the tunnel for them.

For Shane and Sarah, coming to Foodbank kept their spirits high, because even though there was a time when they were only a day away from defaulting on their mortgage repayments, they were able to make ends meet and avoid any bad credit rating due to the support they received.

“You know, I don’t think I would have been able to maintain the motivation had things gotten much worse, and so, Foodbank helped us to keep our keep our heads above water and keep our chins high while we worked through the tough times.”

If you or anyone you know is experiencing food insecurity, don’t struggle in silence and reach out today for a referral on 1800 979 777

Bringing you more
fresh fruit and vegetables

From Perth to the South-West, we are building on existing and creating new relationships with growers, transport companies and everyone in-between, to bring our agencies and customers a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables.

It’s no secret that the relentless cost of living crisis has long dictated how individuals spend their money, with the weekly food shopping budget being first hit in many cases. Healthy, balanced diets become increasingly unaffordable for Western Australian families on low to middle-range incomes in the current cost-of-living crisis.

In August last year we recognised the urgent need for the provision of healthy fruit and vegetables for Western Australian and moved to provide our customers with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Our free fruit and vegetable initiative has been hugely popular and successful but has meant that to keep up with demand, we have had to explore avenues we have not been able to explore previously – whether that be due to the high cost of transport or small budgets internally – we now have dedicated staff members for food sourcing to keep up with demand.

So it was very exciting to be invited to attend the annual Carnarvon Growers Association (CGA) field day, as we are currently not working the growers in Carnarvon region.

The weekend was full of fun, and a great opportunity to meet and greet the growers. There were many interesting presentations which talked about focusing on costs and improving the methods of production, distribution, transportation, and marketing of horticultural products, and so much more. It was also interesting to learn that Carnarvon produces 80 percent of Western Australia Fruit and Vegetables is just incredible. Such a valuable part of Australia!

Visits like these are essential – through engagement and partnership with the many growers in this region, along with pack shed programmes – events such as these allow us to build important relationships which will hopefully enable us to capture produce that would otherwise go to landfill, and provide quality, fresh produce to those that need it the most.

This, coupled with partnerships with transport companies like Team Global Express to move produce from Carnarvon to Perth, to support our Perth Airport branch along with supporting our regional branches – Peel, Kalgoorlie, Bunbury, Albany and Geraldton.

Just a few of the benefits of an affordable healthy diet include improved education outcomes for children, reduced future health costs and reduced social inequality.

In 2024 Foodbank WA provided 1,273,375 kgs of fruit and vegetables fruit and vegetables to our charity partners, schools and directly to households. This equates to 37% of our overall food distribution total.

For our agencies and customers, free fruit and vegetables mean that people no longer have to worry about the affordability of buying healthy food which is a key factor in people’s food choices.

The Emergency Relief & Food Assistance Hotline 1800 979 777 is open Monday to Friday 9.00am -5.00pm and is the easiest and quickest way to secure a referral to shop at Foodbank.

Interesting facts
about Foodbank WA

When we talk about operations and logistics at Foodbank, we are usually talking big numbers.

To start, last financial year we provided 9.2 million meals to those who were doing it tough, distributing food and groceries through the 471 frontline charities we service and partner with.

In the same time period, we provided breakfast and fruit to over 560 schools feeding almost 25,600 children weekly and delivered nutrition education to 6,577 attendees including to children, people with disability, parents and adults.

Our Hunger Report published in 2024 revealed that more than 370,000 households experienced food insecurity last financial year. Close to 200,000 households experienced severe food insecurity the last financial year with 1 in 5 people facing days of no food.

They are all very big numbers.

Here are some interesting facts and big stats about Foodbank you may not know:

The largest freezer of all of the six Foodbank branches is in the Perth branch and holds 468 pallets. It is set at a very cold -18 degrees Celsius, walking in there is a better wake-up than a strong coffee!

In January and February this year alone, we had 913 tonnes of food that came into our branch either donated or purchased. To give you an idea of the volume of that, our largest truck takes 10 pallets of food which is equivalent to 6 or 7 tonnes of stock. This would mean we would need 152 trucks to move this food.

Our Community Kitchen is like no other in Australia. Besides being the only Foodbank kitchen in the country, what makes our kitchen different is that each week Foodbank WA’s Chef Grant is dealt the ultimate mystery box challenge, or in his case, mystery pallet.

It’s hard to image but this means that chef Grant does not know exactly what he will be cooking each week and with what ingredients until sometimes the Monday morning he starts!

Each meal is dependent on what is donated. To date, 533,681 meals have been prepared in our Community Kitchen since its inception in 2015.

Where does our food come from? We currently have 371 amazing and generous donors that range from transport companies, to manufacturers, farmers and growers, packing sheds, meat suppliers the list goes on.

Western Australia is vast, making travel complex and expensive. In addition to our 17-vehicle fleet of trucks that operate between our six branches in Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Peel, Bunbury and Albany in addition to our Perth branch in the Perth Airport precinct we run our Mobile Foodbank service which has 44 locations. This mean that the kms certainly add up week after week and month after month. This sees our average kms driven per year to an eye-watering 316,900km. That’s a little over 80 trips across the country in a year!

If you or someone you know is struggling to afford food, please seek assistance by calling The Emergency Relief & Food Assistance Hotline 1800 979 777, Monday to Friday 9.00am -5.00pm.

Mark’s story

“I used to feel a lot of shame about shopping at Foodbank, it’s not something I ever imaged for my wife and myself, but life had other plans.”

Mark and his wife are no strangers to hard work, Mark worked as a commercial ceiling fixer and his wife Nicole had worked tirelessly in Aged Care for many years. They were self-sufficient and had never had to entertain the thought of struggling and reaching out for help. That all changed on one awful day which altered the direction of their lives forever.

Making life a little bit easier

Mark’s wife was involved in an accident which left her disabled for life. This led to the couple battling with the NDIS for assistance for more than three years – despite having numerous letters from doctors, expensive specialists and even Centrelink. Their experience has left them feeling like they are simply being discouraged from accessing help they rightly deserved – and desperately need – by being asked to fill out form after form and asked to submit more documentation about Nicole’s condition with no end in sight.

Unable to get the assistance they needed, and with each essential specialist’s appointment costing upwards of $400, the couple went through all of their savings, followed by their Super and are now living in state housing. Mark had to give up his job to become his wife’s full-time carer, placing further strain on their finances. The benefit he receives now is equal to what two days’ work would have been for him.

Not only did Mark and Nicole have to adjust to the very abrupt and lifechanging situation hey found themselves in through absolutely no fault of their own, they had to find a way to survive whilst also getting Nicole the care and treatment she required.

Finding Foodbank was game changing for Mark and Nicole. Mark says that being able to shop at discounted prices, great range of well-priced meat, along with the free fruit and vegetables, has been phenomenal. While they have both had to adapt how they eat and the types of food they cook, thanks to Foodbank they aren’t missing out on nutritious and healthy meals.

“I have spoken to other customers at the Peel branch and so many have told me that before finding Foodbank, they had to skip meals so that they could feed their kids. It’s a very harsh reality for some. There are so many people who thanks to Foodbank now send their kids to school with a full tummy in the morning. That’s a beautiful thing.”

While Mark still occasionally feels ashamed for having to ask for help, it’s become easier for him because he finds that the staff and volunteers at the branch are supportive and there’s no judgement at all.

“Nobody wants a handout. They want to stand on their own two feet. But sometimes you just need to swallow your pride and ask for help, it’s worth it for your family. Even cats and dogs are taken care of at Foodbank, with pet supplies often on offer. Foodbank makes life just that little bit easier.”

If you or anyone you know is experiencing food insecurity, don’t struggle in silence and reach out for a referral today on 1800 979 777

Corporate partners supporting local communities

South32, Southern Ports and Talison Lithium step up to support their local communities.

The cost-of-living crisis continues to place a significant strain on families and individuals in Western Australia.

The cost of groceries and utility bills are constantly rising, with people having to make near-impossible decisions to ensure they keep a roof over their heads.

These circumstances are pushing many Western Australians into financial stress, and they are struggling to feed themselves and their families. Foodbank WA’s regional branches, in particular, are overwhelmed, with logistical and transportation issues adding to the increase in foot traffic.

In 2024 the Foodbank Bunbury branch experienced a 22% increase in demand compared to the same period 2023.

Thanks to South32, Southern Ports and Talison Lithium, longstanding Foodbank WA supporters and proud Bunbury branch partners, we have been able to increase the distribution of food by the branch, supporting Bunbury’s Mobile Foodbank for the southwest region and increasing the availability of fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy requirements for the School Breakfast Program.

The Foodbank Bunbury branch is on track to provide more than last year’s total of 1,463,968 meals this year to vulnerable individuals and families within the region through 61 charity partners and 63 schools.

In May alone we provided 190,372 meals to the community including breakfast items to schools registered with the School Breakfast Program.

Foodbank WA’s Hunger Report for 2024 showed that across Australia Food insecurity is being felt more acutely in the regions (37%) compared to metropolitan areas.

In WA, more than 370,000 households experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months.

“We are so grateful for the support of South32, Southern Ports and Talison Lithium. Their funding will enable our Bunbury branch to service the most vulnerable members of South West of WA community and ensure that we are in a good operational and service position to cover the anticipated increase in need in the coming weeks and months. Their support will also allow us to purchase the resources necessary to facilitate current and future food programs.”

South32, Southern Ports and Talison Lithium’s commitment to support those in their local area of operations, demonstrates their passion and commitment to deliver positive long-lasting outcomes that enrich the South West community.” Said Kate O’Hara Foodbank WA CEO.

Food Assistance is available to anyone struggling to access or afford food. Phone the Emergency Relief & Food Assistance Hotline 1800 979 777, Monday to Friday 9.00am – 5.00pm.
